As part of the U.S. Air Force Plant (AFP) 44 Pollution Prevention (P2) Program at Raytheon Missile Systems in Tucson, Arizona, a project was commissioned to reduce the use of hexavalent chromium (Cr+6) in missile manufacturing and depot level repair operations. The main sources of Cr+6 were from the conversion coating of aluminum alloys per MIL-DTL- 5541. The secondary source was from Cr+6 containing paint primers per MIL-PRF-85582 (waterborne) and MIL-PRF- 23377 (high solids) that are utilized in solvent based painting of components per MIL-PRF-85285.
