The life style and child raising environment in Asia are quite different compared with Western countries. Besides, the children's environmental threats and difficulties in conducting studies could be different. To address children's environmental health in Asia area, the Birth Cohort Consortium of Asia (BiCCA) was co-established in 2011. We reviewed the mercury, polychlorinated biphenyls, perfluoroalkyl substances, phthalates, and environmental tobacco smoke in pervious based on birth cohort studies in Asia. The aim of this study was to summarize the traditional environmental pollution and the target subjects were also based on the birth cohort in Asia area. Environmental pollutants included air pollutants, pesticides focusing on organochlorine pesticides, diakylphosphates, and pyrethroid, and heavy metals including lead, arsenic, cadmium, manganese, vanadium, and thallium. Fetal growth and pregnancy outcomes, childhood growth and obesity, neurodevelopment and behavioral problems, and allergic disease and immune function were classified to elucidate the children's health effects. In total, 106 studies were selected in this study. The evidences showed air pollution or pesticides may affect growth during infancy or childhood, and associated with neurodevelopmental or behavioral problems. Prenatal exposure to lead or manganese was associated with neurodevelopmental or behavioral problems, while exposure to arsenic or cadmium may influence fetal growth. In addition to the harmonization and international collaboration of birth cohorts in Asia; however, understand the whole picture of exposure scenario and consider more discipline in the research are necessary. • Air pollution, pesticides, and heavy metals were associated with adverse effects on Asia children. • Air pollution and pesticides showed more evidence on children's growth during infancy or childhood and neurodevelopment. • Lead and manganese reported the impact on children's neurodevelopment; arsenic or cadmium showed may influence fetal growth. Abstract: Metropolitan Taipei, which is located in the subtropical area, is characterized by high population and automobile densities. For convenience, most primary schools are located near major roads. This study explores the exposure of acid aerosols for schoolchildren in areas in Taipei with different traffic densities. Acid aerosols were collected by using a honeycomb denuder filter pack sampling system (HDS). Experimental results indicated that the air pollutants were significantly correlated with traffic densities. The ambient air NO2, SO2, HNO3, NO3 −, SO4 2−, and aerosol acidity concentrations were 31.3 ppb, 4.7 ppb, 1.3 ppb, 1.9 μg m−3, 18.5 μg m−3, and 49.5 nmol m−3 in high traffic density areas, and 6.1 ppb, 1.8 ppb, 0.9 ppb, 0.7 μg m−3, 8.8 μg m−3 and 14.7 nmol m−3 in low traffic density areas. The exposure levels of acid aerosols for schoolchildren would be higher than the measurements because the sampling height was 5 m above the ground. The SO2 levels were low (0.13–8.03 ppb) in the metropolitan Taipei. However, the SO4 2− concentrations were relatively high, and might be attributed to natural emissions of sulfur-rich geothermal sources. The seasonal variations of acid aerosol concentrations were also observed. The high levels of acidic particles in spring time may be attributed to the Asian dust storm and low height of the mixture layer. We conclude that automobile contributed not only the primary pollutants but also the secondary acid aerosols through the photochemical reaction. Schoolchildren were exposed to twice the acid aerosol concentrations in high traffic density areas compared to those in low traffic density areas. The incidence of allergic rhinitis of schoolchildren in the high traffic density areas was the highest in spring time. Accompanied by high temperature variation and high levels of air pollution in spring, the health risk of schoolchildren had been observed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background: We previously showed rising primary antibiotic resistance of Helicobacter pylori during 1990-2015 in the Asia-Pacific region. However, whether primary antibiotic resistance continues to rise is unknown. Therefore, we aimed to assess the latest prevalence of H pylori antibiotic resistance in this region., Methods: We did an updated systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies and randomised controlled trials published in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library between Jan 1, 1990, and July 12, 2023. Studies investigating primary H pylori resistance to clarithromycin, metronidazole, levofloxacin, amoxicillin, or tetracycline in individuals naive to eradication therapy in the Asia-Pacific region (as defined by the UN geoscheme) were eligible for inclusion. There were no language restrictions. Studies that focused on specific subpopulations (eg, children) were excluded. Using a standardised extraction form, two authors independently reviewed and extracted summary data from all eligible articles. The updated prevalence of antibiotic resistance was generated by meta-analysis under a random-effects model and subgroup analyses were done by countries and periods of study. Between-study variability was assessed by use of I 2 . The study is registered in PROSPERO, CRD42022339956., Findings: A total of 351 studies, including 175 new studies and 176 studies from our previous analysis, were included in this meta-analysis. The overall prevalence of primary antibiotic resistance of H pylori between 1990 and 2022 was 22% (95% CI 20-23; I 2 =96%) for clarithromycin, 52% (49-55; I 2 =99%) for metronidazole, 26% (24-29; I 2 =96%) for levofloxacin, 4% (3-5; I 2 =95%) for tetracycline, and 4% (3-5; I 2 =95%) for amoxicillin. Prevalence varied considerably between countries and across study periods. From 1990 to 2022, the prevalence of primary resistance increased for clarithromycin, metronidazole, and levofloxacin but remained stable for amoxicillin and tetracycline. The latest primary resistance prevalences were 30% (95% CI 28-33; I 2 =93%) for clarithromycin, 61% (55-66; I 2 =99%) for metronidazole, 35% (31-39; I 2 =95%) for levofloxacin, 4% (2-6; I 2 =96%) for tetracycline, and 6% (4-8; I 2 =96%) for amoxicillin in the Asia-Pacific region., Interpretation: Treatment guidelines should be adapted in response to the rising primary resistance of key antibiotics for H pylori eradication. Background: Many studies have indicated that most immigrant women come from underdeveloped countries, and this can have negative effects on their lives, children's adaptation to school, and medical care utilization. However, there is insufficient literature about differences in infant caretaking, pre-postpartum health care, and health outcome between immigrant and native Taiwanese populations. The aim of this study was to investigate the differences between Southern Asia immigrants and Taiwanese women in their access to medical care, postnatal growth, and infant care throughout the first six months postpartum., Methods: Comparative and descriptive designs were applied. Immigrant women were eligible if they visited three suburban settings of the Outpatient Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Outpatient Department of Pediatrics in Northern Taiwan during the period up to six months postpartum., Results: Immigrant women appeared to have a lower frequency of antenatal examinations and obtained less health information from health care providers. However, they did not differ significantly from native Taiwanese women in maternal body size, postnatal growth curves, exclusive breastfeeding rates or vaccination awareness at the 6th month postpartum., Conclusions: Learning strengths from cultural differences between immigrant and native women and closing the gaps in health inequality are important issues. Despite the limitation of small sample size, the present findings can be used as references to help health care providers to develop further health policies in Taiwan.

Background: Cancer screening rates are low among Chinese American women, a mostly immigrant minority population. This is possibly because they do not receive cancer screening recommendations from their physicians. The objective of this study was to determine if the rate at which physicians recommend cancer screening to older Chinese American women differs according to the language used during visits., Methods: Data for the cross-sectional study were collected from a telephone survey of older Chinese American women residing in the Washington, DC, area. A total of 507 asymptomatic Chinese American women aged > or =50 who had a regular physician participated in this study. The main outcome was women's self-reported perception of having received a recommendation from their physician for mammography, Pap tests, or colorectal cancer screening in the past 2 years. The main independent variable was the language used during visits (English vs. Chinese). Patient age, educational level, employment status, cultural views, physician specialty, physician gender, and length of relationship with the physician were included in the multiple logistic regression analyses., Results: Chinese women who communicated with their physicians in English were 1.71 (95% CI 1.00-2.96) and 1.73 (95% CI 1.00-3.00) times more likely to report having received mammography and colorectal cancer screening recommendations, respectively (p < 0.05). Physicians in family medicine or general practice were 2.11 (95% CI 1.31-3.40) and 1.70 (95% CI 1.06-2.48) times more likely to recommend cancer screening than those in other specialties., Conclusions: Chinese American women who conversed with their physicians in Chinese were less likely to perceive receiving cancer screening recommendations. Future research is needed to identify physician-specific knowledge, attitude, and cultural barriers to recommending cancer screening.
