The article reports on the prevalence of counterfeit artesunate in Africa and Asia. It notes that fakes containing subtherapeutic amounts of artesunate could result in the emergence and spread of resistance to the artemisinin drugs, shortening the life of these vital medicines. Artemisinin derivatives are rapid in their antimalarial effects and they are very well tolerated.
