In order to explore the development of research of science teacher(RST), 904 articles from the Web of Science (WoS) core set based on bibliometric methods through R software were analyzed in this research. Specifically, it examined the co-occurrence relations of countries/regions, major journals, most cited references, and hot keywords from the macroscopic, mesoscopic and microscopic level of RST. The results showed that the core strength of RST is mainly from traditional industrialized countries such as the United States, Australia, and Britain. And some top journals in science education (such as Journal of Research in Science Teaching, Science Education) has to pay more attention on RST, it may also appeal to lots of top journals in general teacher education (such as Journal of Teacher Education, Teaching and Teacher Education). The research on science teachers was guided by several educational theories about teacher research, such as the teacher epistemological belief, reflective practice, and PCK. Moreover, theories in science education such as scientific literacy, scientific conceptual change also becomes the theoretical basis for science teachers' teaching practice and scientific inquiry instructing. The knowledge, key competences, dispositions, and professional development of science teacher are the main keywords and hot topics in the field of RST.

During the boreal spring, extratropical cyclones in East Asia exhibit the highest frequency of occurrence in northeastern China. These cyclones are characterized by a distinct cold core, which is commonly referred to as the northeastern China cold vortex (NCCV), and most of NCCV events are usually accompanied by complex and hazardous weather, significantly impacting the regional climate in northeastern China. In this study, an automatic algorithm was employed to identify spring NCCVs from 1979 to 2022 using ERA5 reanalysis dataset, and a notable annual periodicity of 3–4 years was observed based on the defined spring NCCV intensity index (NCCVI). Through the analysis of anomalous strong/weak NCCVI years, it was found that the consistent heating (cooling) in the middle and lower troposphere of central Asia (northeastern China), along with a corresponding negative anomaly of geopotential height, as well as the enhanced cyclonic circulation in northeastern China, all contribute to the intensification and maintenance of NCCV activities. Furthermore, the winter snow cover in central Asia plays a vital role in local atmospheric heating and is associated with anomalous quasi-stationary Rossby waves that propagate eastward into northeastern China. The thermal forcing caused by preceding (DJF) snow cover anomalies in central Asia was somewhat replicated in ECHAM 4.6 model simulations. Purpose: Describe real-life practice and outcomes in the management of post)stroke upper limb spasticity with botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) in Asian settings. Methods: Subgroup analysis of a prospective, observational study (NCT01020500) of adult patients (≥18  years) with post-stroke upper limb spasticity presenting for routine spasticity management, including treatment with BoNT-A. The primary outcome was goal attainment as assessed using goal-attainment scaling (GAS). Patients baseline clinical characteristics and BoNT-A injection parameters are also described. Results: Overall, 51 patients from Asia were enrolled. Rates of comorbid cognitive and emotional problems were relatively low. Patients tended to have more severe distal limb spasticity and to prioritize active over passive function goals. Most (94.1%) patients in the subgroup were treated with abobotulinumtoxinA. For these patients, the median total dose was 500  units, and the most frequently injected muscles were the biceps brachii (83.3%), flexor carpi radialis (72.9%), and flexor digitorum profundus (66.7%). Overall, 74.5% achieved their primary goal and the mean GAS T score after one treatment cycle was 56.0  ±  13.0, with a change from baseline of 20.9  ±  14.3 (p  <  0.001). The majority (96.1%) of Asian patients were rated as having improved. Conclusion: In the Asian treatment setting, BoNT-A demonstrated a clinically significant effect on goal attainment for the real-life management of upper limb spasticity following stroke. Introduction: Over 25% of the world's population has non-obese or lean non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and the prevalence is higher than average in Asia. The present study focused on the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and non-obese NAFLD in non-overweight people in China, particularly the influence of triglycerides (TG) in the pathogenesis of non-obese NAFLD. The findings suggest new treatments for NAFLD patients with normal BMI, as well as provide an early warning system for the understanding and prevention of NAFLD in non-obese patients. Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 159,959 Chinese subjects with BMI <24 kg/m2 and normal levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c). The average age was 40.21 ± 13.88 years, and males accounted for 45.7%. A total of 15,907 (9.94%) patients with NAFLD were diagnosed by ultrasonography. Biochemical indicators were measured using an automated analyzer (Abbott AxSYM). The BMI (kg/m2) was calculated from the weight (kg)/height in square meters (m2). The BMI quartile was used as the column-stratified variable to determine the baseline distribution, and logistic regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between NAFLD and its risk factors, with multiple logistic regression used to assess the relationships between BMI or TG and NAFLD and multivariate linear regression used to analyze the association between BMI and TG, while mediation analysis was used to assess the mediation effect of TG. Results: After adjustment of all covariates, the odds ratios were 1.788 (95% CI: 1.749–1.829; p < 0.00001) and 1.491 (95% CI: 1.451–1.532; p < 0.00001) for the association between BMI and TG with NAFLD incidence. The multivariate linear regression coefficient of BMI and TG was β = 0.027 (95% CI: 0.023–0.030; p < 0.00001). Mediation analysis showed that BMI contributed to 10.81% of lean NAFLD with a mediation effect of 2.98%. Conclusion: In a Chinese population with BMI <24 kg/m2 and normal LDL-c levels, BMI and TG were found to be independent predictors of NAFLD. The direct effect of BMI on non-obese NAFLD was 10.41%. Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and hepatic steatosis (HS) are two prevalent chronic liver diseases in Asia. The incidence of CHB combined with HS is increasing due to the rising obesity rates. However, the impact of HS on CHB remains a topic of debate. Hereby, this meta‐analysis aims to examine the effect of HS on Asian patients with CHB. Searches were conducted on four databases to identify articles published from 2005 to 2023. The random‐effects or fixed‐effects model was used to calculate pooled odds ratios (ORs), weighted mean difference (WMD), and confidence intervals (CIs) for the included articles. Of the 15,959 records screened, 88 studies were included in the analysis of HS prevalence in Asian CHB patients with a prevalence of 36.5% (95% CI: 33.7%–39.3%). In addition, age, sex, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and combined metabolic diseases have varying degrees of impact on HS in CHB patients. Furthermore, the coexistence of HS was negatively associated with the response to antiviral therapy, including hepatitis B surface antigen (HBeAg) seroconversion (OR = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.53–0.89) and ALT normalization (OR = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.61–0.92) in CHB patients after 48 weeks of treatment. Regarding disease prognosis, HS was not significantly associated with fibrosis or cirrhosis in CHB patients, while an inverse association was observed between HS and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (OR = 2.93, 95% CI: 1.23–6.99). Objective: During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people devoted longer time to screen viewing due to the need for study, work, and online social activities, instead of outdoor activities, which may have led to an increase in dry eye symptoms. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of dry eye during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science were searched from January 1, 2020 to October 20, 2022. Cross-sectional surveys on dry eye prevalence conducted after January 1, 2020 were included. Two review authors independently performed data extraction and assessed study quality. The random-effects model was used to analyze the prevalence of dry eye, and the odds ratio was used to assess the strength of the association between variables. Subgroup analysis was performed to detect heterogeneity, the leave-one-out method for sensitivity analysis, and the Egger test for publication bias. Results: A total of eleven studies with 15692 individuals met the eligibility criteria. The prevalence of dry eye during the COVID-19 pandemic was 61.0% (95%CI: 51.8%-70.2%) globally and 56.7% (95%CI: 45.3%-68.1%) in Asia. The prevalence of dry eye had significant differences in sex and visual display time, with higher prevalence among females and visual display time of more than 4 hours per day. Subgroup analysis was performed based on diagnostic tools, study population, and average age. A significant difference was found in diagnostic tools, but no significant change in heterogeneity (P<0.05). The leave-one-out method showed stable results, and the Egger test identified no significant publication bias. Conclusion: The prevalence of dry eye during the COVID-19 pandemic is significantly higher than before, and a higher prevalence is found among females and those having a visual display time of more than 4 hours per day. The Hengduan Mountains is in the transitional zone between the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) and the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau in China, and a key area for elucidating the Quaternary environmental changes in Asia. The paleo-Daocheng ice cap was located on the Shaluli Hilly Plateau in the northeastern Hengduan Mountains, the oldest moraines in the Hengduan Mountains region were found in the ice cap area. Such glacial landforms provide key evidence to study the timing when this area entered the cryosphere with the uplift of the QTP. However, it is difficult to collect suitable glacial boulders from these moraines for traditional terrestrial in-situ cosmogenic nuclide (TCN) exposure dating because of long-term severe moraine degradation. Here, we collected clast samples from the moraine surface and depth profile to constrain the age of the oldest moraine in Kuzhaori (moraine E) using TCN 10Be dating technique. The minimum 10Be ages of five clast samples from the moraine surface range from 187.4±1.5 to 576.8±4.3 ka, implying that the moraine has been seriously degraded since deposition. Based on the TCN 10Be concentrations of the samples from a depth profile and simulations, the exposure-erosion-inheritance history of the profile was obtained. By fitting to the profile 10Be concentrations using the chi-square test, the simulations yielded a reliable age of 626.0±52.5 ka for the moraine. Therefore, the oldest moraine (moraine E) in Kuzhaori was most likely formed at about 0.63 Ma ago, corresponding to the marine isotope stage (MIS) 16. Background: Advanced machine learning models have received wide attention in assisting medical decision making due to the greater accuracy they can achieve. However, their limited interpretability imposes barriers for practitioners to adopt them. Recent advancements in interpretable machine learning tools allow us to look inside the black box of advanced prediction methods to extract interpretable models while maintaining similar prediction accuracy, but few studies have investigated the specific hospital readmission prediction problem with this spirit. Methods: Our goal is to develop a machine-learning (ML) algorithm that can predict 30- and 90- day hospital readmissions as accurately as black box algorithms while providing medically interpretable insights into readmission risk factors. Leveraging a state-of-art interpretable ML model, we use a two-step Extracted Regression Tree approach to achieve this goal. In the first step, we train a black box prediction algorithm. In the second step, we extract a regression tree from the output of the black box algorithm that allows direct interpretation of medically relevant risk factors. We use data from a large teaching hospital in Asia to learn the ML model and verify our two-step approach. Results: The two-step method can obtain similar prediction performance as the best black box model, such as Neural Networks, measured by three metrics: accuracy, the Area Under the Curve (AUC) and the Area Under the Precision-Recall Curve (AUPRC), while maintaining interpretability. Further, to examine whether the prediction results match the known medical insights (i.e., the model is truly interpretable and produces reasonable results), we show that key readmission risk factors extracted by the two-step approach are consistent with those found in the medical literature. Conclusions: The proposed two-step approach yields meaningful prediction results that are both accurate and interpretable. Objectives: Drug‐induced liver injury (DILI) is an increasing etiology of liver dysfunction, with various incidence worldwide. To better understand the disease burden and establish appropriate preventive and treatment strategies, a systematic review and meta‐analysis was conducted. Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were searched for studies on the incidence of DILI published up to June 1, 2022. According to the predefined criteria, only population‐based studies were included. Incidence was presented as cases per 100 000 person‐years with 95% confidence interval (CI) using a random‐effects model. Results: A total of 14 studies were included. The overall incidence of DILI was 4.94 per 100 000 person‐years (95% CI 4.05–5.83). Time‐based cumulative meta‐analysis suggested that the incidence of DILI increased over time since 2010. The incidence varied by regions, with Asia having the highest incidence of 17.82 per 100 000 person‐years (95% CI 6.26–29.38), while North America having the lowest incidence of 1.72 per 100 000 person‐years (95% CI 0.48–2.95). All studies reported a higher incidence of DILI in the elderly but comparable incidences between male and female (3.42 per 100 000 person‐years vs 4.64 per 100 000 person‐years). Conclusions: The global incidence of DILI has been increasing since 2010, with the highest incidence in Asia. Simple Summary: The invasive pest Spodoptera frugiperda has become a global problem. Sterile insect technology is an effective means to prevent invasive insects, but at present, the research on this pest is not perfect. Our results showed that egg sterility in offspring reached 74% when the ratio of those given a 250 Gy dose of X-ray radiation to the non-irradiated males was 12:1, and there was no significant difference in mating competitiveness between irradiated males of different ages. Additional cornfield cage studies confirmed this finding by showing that release ratios from 12:1 to 20:1 significantly reduced larval populations in the field, with a 48 to 69% leaf protection effect and a 58 to 83% insect population reduction. This study provides fundamental information for the management of S. frugiperda through the use of sterile insect techniques. Spodoptera frugiperda, an invasive pest, has a huge impact on food production in Asia and Africa. The potential and advantages of sterile insect techniques for the permanent control of S. frugiperda have been demonstrated, but the methods for their field application are still unavailable. For the purposes of this study, male pupae of S. frugiperda were irradiated with an X-ray dose of 250 Gy to examine the effects of both the release ratio and the age of the irradiated males on the sterility of their offspring. The control effect of the irradiated male release ratio on S. frugiperda was evaluated using field-cage experiments in a cornfield. The results showed that when the ratio of irradiated males to non-irradiated males reached 12:1, the egg-hatching rate of the offspring of S. frugiperda decreased to less than 26%, and there was also no significant difference in mating competitiveness among the different ages. Field-cage testing showed that when irradiated males were released at ratios of 12:1–20:1 to normal males, the leaf protection effect for the corn reached 48–69% and the reduction in the insect population reached 58–83%. In this study, an appropriate release ratio is suggested, and the mating competitiveness of irradiated and non-irradiated males of S. frugiperda is investigated, thus providing a theoretical basis for the use of sterile insect techniques to control S. frugiperda. Background: Needs assessment tools may be used to guide the optimisation of cancer survivorship services. We sought to develop and validate a dual-language needs assessment tool for women with breast cancer. Methods: The study comprised two phases; (I) co-design, and (II) psychometric testing. In Phase I, items were generated based on focus group discussions with patients and a literature review. These items were then translated into the Malay language. Content and face validation were undertaken with an expert panel. In phase II, 315 Malaysian women living with breast cancer were recruited. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were conducted to determine construct validity and reliability. Criterion validity was assessed using the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire. Results: We co-designed and validated a 48-item dual-language needs assessment tool for breast cancer (NeAT-BC). Five underlying constructs were revealed in the EFA: (1) emotional support, (2) social and intimate relationships, (3) hospital appointments, (4) personal care and health, and (5) information and services. The NeAT-BC demonstrated good reliability across all constructs (Cronbach's alpha: 0.90 to 0.96). CFA also demonstrated acceptable convergent and divergent validity, composite reliability ≥ 0.87, and Heterotrait–Monotrait index < 0.85 for all constructs. Criterion validity was established given the significant negative correlation between overall needs and quality of life (r = −0.14; p = 0.02). The NeAT-BC took approximately 25 min to be completed and could be interviewer-administered or self-administered. Conclusion: The utilization of the NeAT-BC is expected to guide establishment of evidence-based cancer survivorship services in Malaysia, with wider potentials for adoption in other multi-ethnic and/or low-and-middle income settings. This research seeks to account for the experiences of tertiary students in German language learning by using Facebook and YouTube as aids. Several studies have already investigated the role of Facebook and YouTube in informal language learning. Yet, those studies did not explore utilizing Facebook and YouTube in language learning, especially in German, for university students in Asia. Therefore, this project endeavors to fill in this research gap. An online survey was distributed to collect data from university students. The 5E Instructional Model is employed to investigate how YouTube and Facebook aid German language learning and related limitations. This paper assesses the performances of runoff (Ro) and runoff coefficient (α, the ratio of runoff to precipitation) simulations from 23 models during the historical period and then projects their future changes under the two emission scenarios (SSP1‐2.6 and SSP5‐8.5) in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project. Compared with the UNH/GRDC Ro dataset (0.82 mm day−1), the multi‐model median (MME) Ro of 1995–2014 produces a comparable global mean magnitude (0.80 mm day−1), displays a similar spatial distribution of mean Ro, and also well captures the seasonal cycles at both global and basin scales. The global mean Ro of MME is projected to be increased by 0.01–0.02 mm day−1 (SSP1‐2.6) and 0.02–0.10 mm day−1 (SSP5‐8.5) during the twenty‐first century. Regional hotspots for strong increasing Ro appear across most areas of northern high latitudes, Africa, and southeastern Asia, with high inter‐model consistency. The global mean α is projected to be slightly decreased (−0.17 to −0.63%) except for the long‐term under the SSP5‐8.5 (0.26%). Although signs of changes in Ro vary with the river basins, periods, and scenarios, α in more than half (7 out of 12) river basins are projected to decrease. The uneven distributions of projected Ro changes over global land areas are related to the response of multiple hydroclimatic variables to the global warming. Given regions with inconstancy change signs of the projected precipitation, we speculate that changes in Ro are affected by more complicated hydroclimatic processes that warrant further investigations with physical‐based approaches. Runoff (Ro) is one of the key components of the land water budget and it represents the natural freshwater resource on the earth. This study assesses the historical simulation performances and then projects future changes in Ro and α (the ratio of runoff to precipitation) under two emission scenarios (i.e., SSP1‐2.6 and SSP5‐8.5) based on the simulations from 23 CMIP6 models. The results show that the multi‐model median Ro during the historical period is highly consistent with the reference dataset and captures the seasonal variation in most river basins. During the twenty‐first century, the multi‐model median of global mean Ro is overall projected to increase in the future and the α would slightly decrease except for the long‐term under the SSP5‐8.5. While signs and magnitudes of projection changes depend on regions and basins, those changes are more evident under higher warming levels. The uneven distributions of projected changes of Ro over global land areas are related to the response of other land surface hydrological variables to the global warming induced by anthropogenic emissions in climate models. Cambodia is a rapidly developing country in south-east Asia, a region forecast as an outsized source of plastic pollution into the world's oceans. However, to date there has been no large-scale assessment of plastic pollution in the environment within the country. We conducted a comprehensive assessment of plastic items and hotspots across 243 coastal, river and inland sites along the entire coastline of Cambodia, recording 46,927 items in transects throughout the study area. Plastic densities along coastlines were more than ten times those on riverbanks and more than twenty times that of inland areas. Averaging 70 plastic items per metre of coastline, Cambodia has among the highest average loads of whole plastic items recorded on coastlines globally. Single-use plastic bottles were the most abundant whole item recorded, overrepresented by drinking water bottles. Polystyrene foam was the most common fragmented item. This paper analyzes the total trade openness, goods trade openness and service trade openness of developing countries with different incomes in Asia. After that, the relationship between trade and economic growth is analyzed in a cycle from 2004 to 2020. A total of 663 sample sizes from 39 countries were used for the fixed-effect regression analysis of the development of Asian countries; at the same time, income levels were divided into low-middle-income countries, high-middle-income countries, and high-income countries to distinguish the economic impact of trade openness at different income levels. growth impact. Excessive antibiotic consumption is still common among critically ill patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU), especially during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) period. Moreover, information regarding antimicrobial consumption among ICUs in South-East Asia remains scarce and limited. This study aims to determine antibiotics utilization in ICUs by measuring antibiotics consumption over the past six years (2016–2021) and specifically evaluating carbapenems prescribed in a COVID-19 ICU and a general intensive care unit (GICU) during the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic. (2) Methods: This is a retrospective cross-sectional observational analysis of antibiotics consumption and carbapenems prescriptions. Antibiotic utilization data were estimated using the WHO Defined Daily Doses (DDD). Carbapenems prescription information was extracted from the audits conducted by ward pharmacists. Patients who were prescribed carbapenems during their admission to COVID-19 ICU and GICU were included. Patients who passed away before being reviewed by the pharmacists were excluded. (3) Results: In general, antibiotics consumption increased markedly in the year 2021 when compared to previous years. Majority of carbapenems were prescribed empirically (86.8%). Comparing COVID-19 ICU and GICU, the reasons for empirical carbapenems therapy in COVID-19 ICU was predominantly for therapy escalation (64.7% COVID-19 ICU vs. 34% GICU, p < 0.001), whereas empirical prescription in GICU was for coverage of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) gram-negative bacteria (GNB) (45.3% GICU vs. 22.4% COVID-19 ICU, p = 0.005). Despite microbiological evidence, the empirical carbapenems were continued for a median (interquartile range (IQR)) of seven (5–8) days. This implies the need for a rapid diagnostic assay on direct specimens, together with comprehensive antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) discourse with intensivists to address this issue. Improving healthy life expectancy by targeting aging-related pathological changes has been the spotlight of geroscience. Scorpions have been used in traditional medicine in Asia and Africa for a long time. We have isolated heat-resistant peptides from scorpion venom of Buthusmartensii Karsch (SVHRP) and found that SVHRP can attenuate microglia activation and protect Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) against β-amyloid toxicity. Based on the amino acid sequence of these peptides, scorpion venom heat--resistant synthesized peptide (SVHRSP) was prepared using polypeptide synthesis technology. In the present study, we used C. elegans as a model organism to assess the longevity-related effects and underlying molecular mechanisms of SVHRSP in vivo. The results showed that SVHRSP could prolong the lifespan of worms and significantly improve the age-related physiological functions of worms. SVHRSP increases the survival rate of larvae under oxidative and heat stress and decreases the level of reactive oxygen species and fat accumulation in vivo. Using gene-specific mutation of C. elegans, we found that SVHRSPmediated prolongation of life depends on Daf-2, Daf-16, Skn-1, and Hsf-1 genes. These results indicate that the antiaging mechanism of SVHRSP in nematodes might be mediated by the insulin/insulin-like growth factor-1 signaling pathway. Meanwhile, SVHRSP could also up-regulate the expression of stress-inducing genes Hsp-16.2, Sod-3, Gei-7, and Ctl-1 associated with aging. To elucidate and compare the genetic, clinical, ancillary diagnostic, and pathological characteristics across different Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker disease (GSS) phenotypes and explore the underlying causes of the phenotypic heterogeneities. The genetic, clinical, ancillary diagnostic, and pathological profiles of GSS patients reported in the literature were obtained and analyzed. Additionally, 3 patients with genetically confirmed GSS from our unit were included. Based on clinical presentation, patients were classified into typical GSS, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD)-like GSS, GSS with dementia, and other categories. A total of 329 GSS cases were included with a 1.13:1 female-to-male ratio, median onset age 44, and median duration 4 years. Of the 294 categorized patients, 50.7% had typical GSS, 24.8% showed CJD-like GSS, and 16.3% presented with GSS with dementia. Clinical classification varied significantly based on genotype, with P102L more common in typical GSS and A117V prevalent in CJD-like GSS. Polymorphism at codon 129 has no effect on GSS phenotype, but the 129 M allele acts as a protective factor in GSS patients in Asia and North America. Moderate to severe spongiform degeneration and the presence of PK-resistant small fragments migrating at <11 kDa on electrophoretic gels along with PrP27–30 fragments were more prevalent in CJD-like GSS phenotype, while hyperphosphorylated tau protein co-deposition tends to be characteristic of typical GSS and GSS with dementia. This study reveals GSS's intricate nature, showing significant variations in clinical presentations, diagnostic findings, and pathological features. Viral covert mortality disease (VCMD), also known as running mortality syndrome (RMS), is caused by covert mortality nodavirus (CMNV) and has impacted the shrimp farming industry in Asia and Latin America in recent years. The pathogenic mechanism of CMNV infecting Penaeus vannamei was investigated in this study. In the naturally infected shrimp, histopathological and in situ hybridization (ISH) analysis verified that CMNV infection and severe cellar structural damage occurred in almost all cells of the ommatidium. Under transmission electron microscopic (TEM), vacuolation and necrosis, together with numerous CMNV-like particles, could be observed in the cytoplasm of most cell types of the ommatidium. The challenge test showed that a low CMNV infectious dose caused cumulative mortality of 66.7 ± 6.7% and 33.3 ± 3.6% of shrimp in the 31-day outdoor and indoor farming trials, respectively. The shrimp in the infection group grew slower than those in the control group; the percentage of soft-shell individuals in the infection group (42.9%) was much higher than that of the control group (17.1%). The histopathological and ISH examinations of individuals artificially infected with CMNV revealed that severe cellar damage, including vacuolation, karyopyknosis, and structural failure, occurred not only in the cells of the refraction part of the ommatidium, but also in the cells of the nerve enrichment and hormone secretion zones. And the pathological damages were severe in the nerve cells of both the ventral nerve cord and segmental nerve of the pleopods. TEM examination revealed the ultrastructural pathological changes and vast amounts of CMNV-like particles in the above-mentioned tissues. The differential transcriptome analysis showed that the CMNV infection resulted in the significant down-regulated expression of genes of photo-transduction, digestion, absorption, and growth hormones, which might be the reason for the slow growth of shrimp infected by CMNV. This study uncovered unique characteristics of neurotropism of CMNV for the first time and explored the pathogenesis of slow growth and shell softening of P. vannamei caused by CMNV infection. Purpose: This study aimed to comprehensively review the literature and synthesize relevant data to examine the pooled prevalence of poor sleep quality (sleep impairment) and assess overall sleep quality in patients with tinnitus. Methods: This meta-analysis systematically searched both English (PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science) and Chinese (Wanfang Data Chinese database, Veep Chinese Database, and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure) databases. Data extraction and quality assessment were independently performed by two authors. The pooled prevalence of sleep impairment and poor sleep quality was calculated via a random-effects model. Sub-group and sensitivity analyses were performed to explore the source of heterogeneity. Results: A total of seven studies were included with a total sample of 3041 tinnitus participants. The pooled prevalence of sleep impairment was 53.5% (95% confidence interval: 40.2–66.8%) and the I2 was 97.8% (Q = 7.90, p = 0.000). There were significant differences in the prevalence of poor sleep quality between males and females (39.1% vs. 44.6%, P = 0.034), between different PSQI cut-off values ≥ 7 and > 5 (53.1% vs. 53.8%, P = 0.000), and between sample sizes > 200 and ≤ 200 (54.0% vs. 52.7%, P = 0.000). In non-Asia area, the prevalence (56.6%, 95% CI: 42.6–70.5%) was lower than that in Asia areas (34.5%, 95% CI: 25.7–43.3%). Conclusion: Sleep impairment is common among patients with tinnitus. To report the long-term clinical outcomes of low-risk (LR) and intermediate-risk (IR) prostate cancer patients treated with low-dose-rate brachytherapy (LDR-BT) and external beam radiation therapy (EBRT). Men with biopsy-proven low- and intermediate-risk prostate cancer received EBRT and LDR-BT in an Asian academic center from 2000 to 2019 were reviewed. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis was performed to compare biochemical failure-free survival (bFFS) and overall survival (OS) between LDR and EBRT in the low- and intermediate-risk cohorts. 642 patients (521 EBRT and 121 LDR-BT) with low- and intermediate-risk prostate cancer were included for analysis. In the intermediate-risk group, 5- and 10-year bFFS was 96%, 89% and 86%, 61% for LDR-BT and EBRT, respectively. LDR-BT was associated with a statistically significant improvement of bFFS in the intermediate-risk cohort (HR 2.7, p = 0.02). In the low-risk cohort, no difference of bFFS was found between LDR-BT and EBRT (HR 1.9, p = 0.08). Hormone therapy was more common in EBRT than LDR-BT for intermediate-risk group (71% versus 44%, p < 0.05). Prostate cancer-specific mortality was low in both EBRT (1%) and LDR-BT (2%) cohorts. No significant difference in OS was found between LDR-BT and EBRT in low- and intermediate-risk group (HR 2.1, p = 0.2 and HR = 1.7, p = 0.3). In this paper, Swarthmore College and Bryn Mawr College faculty and administrators share reflections on the Luce Initiative on Asian Studies and the Environment (LIASE) grants from the Henry Luce Foundation for the enhancement of curriculum on Asia and the environment and the cultivation of collaborations between US and Asian institutions. Supported by LIASE exploration grants in 2013 and a LIASE implementation grant awarded to the Tri-College Consortium of Bryn Mawr, Haverford, and Swarthmore Colleges in 2015, curricular innovations included the creation of courses with travel components and the introduction of topics on Asia and the environment across disciplines. Topics of discussion include fostering curricular innovation and interdisciplinarity across academic divisions; building effective and sustainable collaborations with local institutions in Asia; forging strategic partnerships with administrators in grants, advancement, and finance; leveraging institutional relationships to secure funding to pilot and sustain initiatives; and the importance of reciprocity in building long-term, cross-cultural exchanges. Host-induced gene silencing (HIGS) of insect growth and development is a promising measure for pest control in practice; the feasibility of disarming insect detoxification of toxic phytochemicals via HIGS of insect detoxification enzymes remains largely unexplored. In this study, a HIGS system was applied to interfere with glutathione S-transferase (GST) gene expression in brown planthopper (BPH, Nilaparvata lugens), a key insect pest in rice of Asia, and regulate rice resistance to the insect. The recombination vector in transgenic plants was expressed in almost all organs, especially in vascular bundle tissues, mesophyll, epidermal cells and leaf sheath sap, but not in xylem. Target BPH NlGST1-1 was successfully integrated into rice genome, the resultant transgenic rice lines harbored a single-copy of BPH NlGST1-1 dsRNA, and expression of NlGST1-1 dsRNA was detected in leaves and leaf sheaths of transgenic lines. However, the content of phytochemical gramine, an inherent alkaloid in gramineous plants, did not change in these transgenic plants. BPH nymphs reared on the transgenic rice expressing NlGST1-1 dsRNA displayed significant reductions in NlGST1-1 transcript expression and GST activity. The transgenic plants significantly retarded relative growth rate of the nymphs and the insect female fecundity, the plants also showed enhanced resistance when attacked by BPH. Our study demonstrated the feasibility of reinforcing gramine-mediated plant defense via HIGS of GSTs in herbivorous insects. Background: The best response and survival outcomes between advanced melanoma patients treated with the anti-PD-1 monotherapy vary greatly, rendering a risk model in need to optimally stratify patients based on their likelihood to benefit from the said treatment. Methods: We performed an ad hoc analysis of 89 advanced melanoma patients treated with the anti-PD-1 monotherapy from two prospective clinical trials at the Peking University Cancer Hospital from April 2016 to May 2018. Clinicodemographical characteristics, baseline and early-on-treatment (median 0.6 months after anti-PD-1 monotherapy initiation) routine laboratory variables, including complete blood count and general chemistry, and best response/survival data were extracted and analyzed in both univariate and multivariate logistic and Cox proportional hazard models. Results: After three rounds of screening, risk factors associated with a poorer PFS included a high pre-treatment neutrophil, derived neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (dNLR), low pre-treatment hemoglobin, and low early-on-/pre-treatment fold change of eosinophil; those with a poorer OS included a high pre-treatment neutrophil, eosinophil, PLT, early-on/pre-treatment fold change of LDH and neutrophil; and those with a poorer best response included a high pre-treatment NLR and early-on-/pre-treatment LDH fold change. Risk models (scale: low, median-low, median high, and high risk) were established based on these risk factors as dichotomous variables and M stage (with vs. without distant metastasis) for PFS (HR 1.976, 95% CI, 1.507–2.592, P < 0.001), OS (HR 2.348, 95% CI, 1.688–3.266), and non-responder (OR 3.586, 95% CI, 1.668–7.713, P = 0.001), respectively. For patients with low, median-low, median-high, and high risks of developing disease progression (PD), six-month PFS rates were 64.3% (95% CI, 43.5–95.0%), 37.5% (95% CI, 22.4–62.9%), 9.1% (95% CI, 3.1–26.7%), and 0%, respectively. For patients with OS risks of low, median-low, median-high, and high, OS rates at 12 months were 82.5% (95% CI, 63.1–100%), 76.6% (95% CI, 58.4–100%), 42.1% (95% CI, 26.3–67.3%), and 23.9% (95% CI, 11.1–51.3%), respectively. For patients with risks of low, median-low, median-high, and high of being a non-responder, objective response rates were 50.0% (95% CI, 15.7–84.3%), 27.8% (95% CI, 9.7–53.5%), 10.3% (95% CI, 2.9–24.2%), and 0%, respectively. Conclusion: A risk scoring model based on the clinicodemographical characteristics and easily obtainable routinely tested laboratory biomarkers may facilitate the best response and survival outcome prediction and personalized therapeutic decision making for the anti-PD-1 monotherapy treated advanced melanoma patients in Asia. BACKGROUND: Sanghuang mushrooms are medicinal fungi widely used in eastern Asia. In this study, the antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory activity of a novel extracellular polysaccharopeptide, sanghuang extracellular polysaccharopeptide (SePSP) was investigated. The SePSP was purified from the submerged fermentation broth of a sanghuang mycelium, Sanghuangporus lonicericola strain CBS17, which was isolated from a wild sanghuang fruiting body. RESULTS: The SePSP was extracted using an ethanol precipitation procedure, followed by diethylaminoethanol (DEAE) anion‐exchange and size‐exclusion chromatography. The mass ratio of the polysaccharide and peptide components in the purified SePSP was approximately 4.87:1. By determining its free radical scavenging abilities using 2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), the hydroxyl free radical, and the superoxide anion free radical, as well as its total reducing power, SePSP was shown to have strong concentration‐dependent antioxidant activity in vitro. Further, SePSP effectively alleviated dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)‐induced ulcerative colitis (UC) in mice. Administration of 200 mg kg−1 SePSP by gavage for 7 days prevented body weight loss; significantly reduced the mRNA levels of proinflammatory cytokines, including TNF‐α and IL‐1β; increased mRNA level of the anti‐inflammatory cytokine IL‐10 in the colon, and decreased the malondialdehyde concentration from 6.42 to 4.82 μmol L−1 in the blood in UC mice. CONCLUSION: The SePSP had strong concentration‐dependent antioxidant activity in vitro and effectively alleviated DSS‐induced UC in mice. The in vivo therapeutic efficacy in DSS‐induced UC may be mediated by modulating the expression of inflammatory cytokines and inhibiting oxidative stress. Chinese cabbage is an important vegetable in Asia, and high-yielding hybrids are needed to cope with the growing demand. A comparative transcriptome profiling was conducted to reveal the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with heterosis in two hybrids relative to their parents. Our data suggests that heterosis is underlined by a significant upregulation of gene expression. High expression of DEGs in glycolysis and photosynthesis pathways in hybrids depicted their relation with growth and hybrid vigor. Besides, DEGs related to auxin, abscisic acid, ethylene and gibberellin were identified, implying that these hormones may boost the mechanisms of growth and developmental processes in the hybrids. Furthermore, transcription factors, including bHLH, ERF, MYB and WRKY were predicted to regulate downstream genes linked to hybrid vigor. Mental illness is a prevalent and pressing public health problem among the Asian population, especially among young adults. This study examined the psychosocial predictors of the intention to seek counseling based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and the effects of mental health conditions on the relative contributions of the TPB predictors in forming the intention among Asian young adults. The survey results in Singapore (n = 232) and Hong Kong (n = 998) revealed that attitudes, descriptive norms, and self-efficacy significantly predicted the intention to seek counseling in both Asian sites. In addition, the descriptive norms-intention association was stronger among those in a better mental health condition than among those with a worse mental health condition for both samples. The findings extend the literature on the TPB, as well as provide tailored strategies to promote counseling seeking among Asian young adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To investigate the changes in the sagittal parameters of the cervical spine and the clinical efficacy of C2∼3 anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) combined with internal fixation for unstable hangman's fractures. The clinical data of 46 patients with unstable hangman's fractures treated with both C2∼3 ACDF combined with internal fixation between May 2012 and May 2017 were analyzed retrospectively. The upper cervical angle (C0∼2), the forward translation of the C2 vertebral body (C2-T), C2∼3 local kyphosis angle (C2∼3 LK), C2∼7 cervical curvature (C2∼7 CC), C2 sagittal vertical axis (C2-SVA), and T1 slope angle (T1S) were compared preoperatively, postoperatively, and at the last follow-up to evaluate the clinical therapeutic effects. A total of 46 patients were followed-up for an average of 16 months. No aggravation of the spinal cord, nerve injury, cerebrospinal fluid leakage, or other complications occurred. Six patients had American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) grade C preoperatively; 4 improved to grade E, and 2 improved to grade D postoperatively. Twelve patients with ASIA grade D preoperatively improved to grade E postoperatively. C0∼2, C2-T, C2∼3 LK, C2∼7 CC, and C2-SVA measurements were significantly improved postoperatively and at the last follow-up, but there was no significant change in T1S between preoperative and postoperative values. For patients with unstable hangman's fractures, C2∼3 ACDF combined with internal fixation can achieve immediate stability of the upper cervical vertebrae, effectively correct the forward displacement and angulation of C2, and restore the sagittal balance of the cervical spine. The rate of osseous intervertebral fusion is high, and there are few complications. BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that osteoporosis, sarcopenia and obesity are important factors affecting metabolic diseases such as fracture, hypertension and dyslipidemia. OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence and influencing factors of osteosarcopenic obesity and its effects on racture and dyslipidemia, and to explore the role of diet and exercise in preventing osteosarcopenic obesity, so as to provide theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment of osteosarcopanic obesity. METHODS: The related articles included in PubMed and WAN FANG database published from 1990 to 2018 were searched using the following keywords: osteosarcopenic obesity, sarcopenic obesity, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, obesity, fracture, dyslipidemia, osteosarcopenic obesity syndrome. The language was limited to "English' or "Chinese." A total of 71 articles ware included for analysis and discussion. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: (1) The age, sex, nationality or race differences in prevalence of osteosarcopenic obesity have been found. (2) The diagnostic criteria of osteosarcopenic obesity, not international standard, have been established in the Unned States, Europe, Asia and others continents or countries; (3) Osteosarcopenic obesity is affected not only by living and eating habits, but also by genes, cytokines and metabolic hormones. Natural reservoir hosts can sustain infection of pathogens without succumbing to overt disease. Multiple bat species host a plethora of viruses, pathogenic to other mammals, without clinical symptoms. Here, we detail infection of bat primary cells, immune cells, and cell lines with Dengue virus. While antibodies and viral RNA were previously detected in wild bats, their ability to sustain infection is not conclusive. Old-world fruitbat cells can be infected, producing high titres of virus with limited cellular responses. In addition, there is minimal interferon (IFN) response in cells infected with MOIs leading to dengue production. The ability to support in vitro replication/production raises the possibility of bats as a transient host in the life cycle of dengue or similar flaviviruses. New antibody serology evidence from Asia/Pacific highlights the previous exposure and raises awareness that bats may be involved in flavivirus dynamics and infection of other hosts. Background: There is very limited data on the time trend of diabetes incidence in Asia. Using population-level data, we report the secular trend of the incidence of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in Hong Kong between 2002 and 2015.Methods and Findings: The Hong Kong Diabetes Surveillance Database hosts clinical information on people with diabetes receiving care under the Hong Kong Hospital Authority, a statutory body that governs all public hospitals and clinics. Sex-specific incidence rates were standardised to the age structure of the World Health Organization population. Joinpoint regression analysis was used to describe incidence trends. A total of 562,022 cases of incident diabetes (type 1 diabetes [n = 2,426]: mean age at diagnosis is 32.5 years, 48.4% men; type 2 diabetes [n = 559,596]: mean age at diagnosis is 61.8 years, 51.9% men) were included. Among people aged <20 years, incidence of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes increased. For type 1 diabetes, the incidence increased from 3.5 (95% CI 2.2-4.9) to 5.3 (95% CI 3.4-7.1) per 100,000 person-years (average annual percentage change [AAPC] 3.6% [95% CI 0.2-7.1], p < 0.05) in boys and from 4.3 (95% CI 2.7-5.8) to 6.4 (95% CI 4.3-8.4) per 100,000 person-years (AAPC 4.7% [95% CI 1.7-7.7], p < 0.05] in girls; for type 2 diabetes, the incidence increased from 4.6 (95% CI 3.2-6.0) to 7.5 (95% CI 5.5-9.6) per 100,000 person-years (AAPC 5.9% [95% CI 3.4-8.5], p < 0.05) in boys and from 5.9 (95% CI 4.3-7.6) to 8.5 (95% CI 6.2-10.8) per 100,000 person-years (AAPC 4.8% [95% CI 2.7-7.0], p < 0.05) in girls. In people aged 20 to <40 years, incidence of type 1 diabetes remained stable, but incidence of type 2 diabetes increased over time from 75.4 (95% CI 70.1-80.7) to 110.8 (95% CI 104.1-117.5) per 100,000 person-years (AAPC 4.2% [95% CI 3.1-5.3], p < 0.05) in men and from 45.0 (95% CI 41.4-48.6) to 62.1 (95% CI 57.8-66.3) per 100,000 person-years (AAPC 3.3% [95% CI 2.3-4.2], p < 0.05) in women. In people aged 40 to <60 years, incidence of type 2 diabetes increased until 2011/2012 and then flattened. In people aged ≥60 years, incidence was stable in men and declined in women after 2011. No trend was identified in the incidence of type 1 diabetes in people aged ≥20 years. The present study is limited by its reliance on electronic medical records for identification of people with diabetes, which may result in incomplete capture of diabetes cases. The differentiation of type 1 and type 2 diabetes was based on an algorithm subject to potential misclassification.Conclusions: There was an increase in incidence of type 2 diabetes in people aged <40 years and stabilisation in people aged ≥40 years. Background: The aim of this study was to compare and summarize the lipid-altering effects of combination therapy with ezetimibe and statins (E/S) and a double dose of statin (D/S) monotherapy on patients with hypercholesterolemia. Methods: We conducted search on 2 medical databases, PubMed and EMBASE to identify all relevant studies. A meta-analysis was performed to clarify the efficacy in the two groups. Only double-blind Randomized controlled study (RCTs) of efficacy evaluation in the two groups with ezetimibe and statins and a double dose of statin in participants with hypercholesterolemia that examined low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), total cholesterol (TC) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) were included. Two reviewers extracted data from all primary studies independently. The primary data were the level of LDL-C, TC and HDL-C concentrations at the end point and are expressed as mean and standard deviation (SD). Results: A total of 11 double-blind, active or placebo-controlled studies with 1926 hypercholesterolemia adults randomized to ezetimibe 10 mg added to ongoing statins (N = 994) or statin titration (doubling) (N = 932) were pooled for the global meta-analysis. The effect size between treatment groups within individual studies was assessed by weighted mean difference (MD) using a random- or fixed-effect model. The result showed that the participants in E/S group get obvious lower LDL-C [MD = -13.14 mg/dL, 95%CI (−16.83, -9.44), p = 0.00001] and TC concentration [MD = -23.79 mg/dL, 95%CI (−38.65, -8.93), p = 0.002] from baseline to follow-up, comparing to the D/S group. Besides, no significant between-group differences were observed for concentrations of HDL-C [MD = 0.46 mg/dL, 95%CI (− 1.14, 2.06), p = 0.57]. According to subgroup analysis, the combination of ezetimibe and atorvastatin (10 mg) [MD = -16.98 mg/dL, p < 0.0001] or simvastatin (20 mg) [MD = -17.35 mg/dL, p < 0.0001] showed stronger ability of reducing LDL-C than combination of ezetimibe and rosuvastatin (10 mg) [MD = -9.29 mg/dL, p = 0.05]. The efficacy of short-term (endpoint time between 6 to 16 week) and long-term (52 week) treatment in the LDL-C between two groups did not show significant differences. Besides, only participants from Asia treated with combination therapy were associated with a significant lower LDL-C concentration [MD = -14.7 mg/dL, p < 0.0001]. Conclusions: The addition of ezetimibe to statin appears to be more effective on reducing LDL-C and TC concentrations than doubling the statin dose. Moreover, the ability to reduce cholesterol levels of combinations therapy with ezetimibe and different statins or to participants from different geographic location may vary, based on this meta-analysis, while more samples are needed to verify. Despite the significant progress in improving chemical transport models (CTMs), applications of these modeling endeavors are still subject to large and complex model uncertainty. The Model Inter-Comparison Study for Asia III (MICS-Asia III) has provided the opportunity to assess the capability and uncertainty of current CTMs in East Asian applications. In this study, we have evaluated the multi-model simulations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO) and ammonia (NH3) over China under the framework of MICS-Asia III. A total of 13 modeling results, provided by several independent groups from different countries and regions, were used in this study. Most of these models used the same modeling domain with a horizontal resolution of 45 km and were driven by common emission inventories and meteorological inputs. New observations over the North China Plain (NCP) and Pearl River Delta (PRD) regions were also available in MICS-Asia III, allowing the model evaluations over highly industrialized regions. The evaluation results show that most models captured the monthly and spatial patterns of NO2 concentrations in the NCP region well, though NO2 levels were slightly underestimated. Relatively poor performance in NO2 simulations was found in the PRD region, with larger root-mean-square error and lower spatial correlation coefficients, which may be related to the coarse resolution or inappropriate spatial allocations of the emission inventories in the PRD region. All models significantly underpredicted CO concentrations in both the NCP and PRD regions, with annual mean concentrations that were 65.4 % and 61.4 % underestimated by the ensemble mean. Such large underestimations suggest that CO emissions might be underestimated in the current emission inventory. In contrast to the good skills for simulating the monthly variations in NO2 and CO concentrations, all models failed to reproduce the observed monthly variations in NH3 concentrations in the NCP region. Most models mismatched the observed peak in July and showed negative correlation coefficients with the observations, which may be closely related to the uncertainty in the monthly variations in NH3 emissions and the NH3 gas–aerosol partitioning. Finally, model intercomparisons have been conducted to quantify the impacts of model uncertainty on the simulations of these gases, which are shown to increase with the reactivity of species. Models contained more uncertainty in the NH3 simulations. This suggests that for some highly active and/or short-lived primary pollutants, like NH3 , model uncertainty can also take a great part in the forecast uncertainty in addition to the emission uncertainty. The interest-driven creator (IDC) theory is being developed as a group endeavor by Asian researchers to articulate a holistic learning design theory for future education in Asia. The theory hypothesizes that students, driven by interest, can be engaged in the creation of knowledge (generating ideas and artifacts). By repeating this creation process in their daily learning routines, they will excel in learning performance, develop twenty-first-century competencies, and form creation habits. We hope that with such practices in education, our future generations will ultimately become lifelong interest-driven creators. In IDC Theory, there are three anchored concepts, namely, interest, creation, and habit. Each anchored concept comprises three component concepts which form a concept loop. For example, the creation loop consists of three component concepts—imitating, combining, and staging. Imitating is concerned with taking in (or inputting) an abundant amount of existing knowledge from the outside world to form one's background knowledge. Combining refers to delivering (or outputting) new ideas or artifacts prolifically by synthesizing existing information encountered in the world and thoughts arising from the students' background knowledge. Staging relates to frequently demonstrating the generated ideas or artifacts to the relevant communities and receiving feedback from these communities to improve the novelty and value of the demonstrated outcomes while gaining social recognition and nurturing positive social emotions. This paper focuses on describing the three components of the creation loop. We provide three case studies to illustrate the creation loop at work, as well as how it intertwines with both the interest and habit loops in supporting students to develop their creation capabilities. In presenting this iteration of the creation concept, an anchored concept in IDC theory, we acknowledge the roles played of imitation, combination, and staging in different learning and education contexts—indeed, there are multiple theories that inform and intersect with it. Spatiotemporal variations of ozone (O3) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) mixing ratios from 14 state-of-the-art chemical transport models (CTMs) are intercompared and evaluated with O3 observations in East Asia, within the framework of the Model Inter-Comparison Study for Asia Phase III (MICS-Asia III). This study was designed to evaluate the capabilities and uncertainties of current CTMs simulations for Asia and to provide multi-model estimates of pollutant distributions. These models were run by 14 independent groups working in China, Japan, South Korea, the United States and other countries/regions. Compared with the previous phase of MICS-Asia (MICS-Asia II), the evaluation with observations was extended from 4 months to 1 full year across China and the western Pacific Rim. In general, model performance levels for O3 varied widely by region and season. Most models captured the key patterns of monthly and diurnal variation of surface O3 and its precursors in the North China Plain and western Pacific Rim but failed to do so for the Pearl River Delta. A significant overestimation of surface O3 was evident from May to September/October and from January to May over the North China Plain, the western Pacific Rim and the Pearl River Delta. Comparisons drawn from observations show that the considerable diversity in O3 photochemical production partly contributed to this overestimation and to high levels of inter-model variability in O3 for North China. In terms of O3 soundings, the ensemble average of models reproduced the vertical structure for the western Pacific, but overestimated O3 levels to below 800 hPa in the summer. In the industrialized Pearl River Delta, the ensemble average presented an overestimation for the lower troposphere and an underestimation for the middle troposphere. The ensemble average of 13 models for O3 did not always exhibit superior performance compared with certain individual models in contrast with its superior value for Europe. This finding suggests that the spread of ensemble-model values does not represent all of the uncertainties of O3 or that most MICS-Asia III models missed key processes. This study improved the performance of modeling O3 in March at Japanese sites compared with MICS-Asia II. However, it overpredicted surface O3 concentrations for western Japan in July, which was not found by MICS-Asia II. More than 50% of the world’s lung cancer cases occur in Asia and more than 20% of cancer deaths in Asia are attributable to lung cancer. The U.S. National Lung Screening Trial has shown that lung cancer screening with computed tomography (CT) can reduce lung cancer deaths. Using the Lung Cancer Policy Model–Asia (LCPM-Asia), we estimated the potential mortality reduction achievable through the implementation of CT-based lung cancer screening in China, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea. The LCPM-Asia was calibrated to the smoking prevalence of each of the aforementioned countries based on published national surveys and to lung cancer mortality rates from the World Health Organization. The calibrated LCPM-Asia was then used to simulate lung cancer deaths under screening and no-screening scenarios for the four countries. Using screening eligibility criteria recommended by the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), which are based on age and smoking history, we estimated the lung cancer mortality reduction from screening through year 2040. By 2040, lung cancer screening would result in 91,362 life-years gained and 4.74% mortality reduction in South Korea; 290,325 life-years gained and 4.33% mortality reduction in Japan; 3,014,215 life-years gained and 4.22% mortality reduction in China; and 8,118 life-years gained and 3.76% mortality reduction in Singapore. As for mortality reduction by smoker type, current smokers would have the greatest mortality reduction in each country, ranging from 5.56% in Japan to 6.86% in Singapore. Among the four countries, lung cancer screening under CMS eligibility criteria was most effective in South Korea and least effective in Singapore. Singapore’s low smoking prevalence and South Korea’s aging population and higher smoking prevalence may partially explain the discrepancy in effectiveness. Background: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) increases hospitalization risk. Young-onset T2D (YOD) (defined as onset before age 40 years) is associated with excess morbidity and mortality, but its effect on hospitalizations is unknown. Objective: To determine hospitalization rates among persons with YOD and to examine the effect of age at onset on hospitalization risk. Design: Prospective cohort study. Setting: Hong Kong. Participants: Adults aged 20 to 75 years in population-based (2002 to 2014; n  = 422 908) and registry-based (2000 to 2014; n  = 20 886) T2D cohorts. Measurements: All-cause and cause-specific hospitalization rates. Negative binomial regression models estimated effect of age at onset on hospitalization rate and cumulative bed-days from onset to age 75 years for YOD. Results: Patients with YOD had the highest hospitalization rates by attained age. In the registry cohort, 36.8% of YOD bed-days before age 40 years were due to mental illness. The adjusted rate ratios showed increased hospitalization in YOD versus usual-onset T2D (onset at age ≥40 years) (all-cause, 1.8 [95% CI, 1.7 to 2.0]; renal, 6.7 [CI, 4.2 to 10.6]; diabetes, 3.7 [CI, 3.0 to 4.6]; cardiovascular, 2.1 [CI, 1.8 to 2.5]; infection, 1.7 [CI, 1.4 to 2.1]; P  < 0.001 for all). Models estimated that intensified risk factor control in YOD (hemoglobin A 1c level <6.2%, systolic blood pressure <120 mm Hg, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level <2.0 mmol/L [<77.3 mg/dL], triglyceride level <1.3 mmol/L [<115.1 mg/dL], waist circumference of 85 cm [men] or 80 cm [women], and smoking cessation) was associated with a one-third reduction in cumulative bed-days from onset to age 75 years (97 to 65 bed-days). Limitation: Possible residual confounding. Conclusion: Adults with YOD have excess hospitalizations across their lifespan compared with persons with usual-onset T2D, including an unexpectedly large burden of mental illness in young adulthood. Background and Aim: The diagnostic and therapeutic modalities of esophageal cancer have recently improved in Asia, and its prognosis is expected to change. This study provides a population‐based report on the epidemiology of esophageal cancer in Korea. Methods: Cancer incidence data from 1999 to 2013 were obtained from the Korea Central Cancer Registry, covering the entire population. Age‐standardized incidence rates and annual percent changes were calculated according to subsites and histological types. Five‐year relative survival rates were estimated for cases diagnosed between 1993 and 2013. Relative excess rates were compared between patients diagnosed from 2009 to 2013 and 2006 to 2008. Results: The age‐standardized incidence rates decreased from 8.8 per 100 000 populations in 1999 to 5.9 in 2013 with an annual percent change of −2.6% in men and −2.2% in women. The most common histological type was squamous cell carcinoma, accounting for 90.2% of all esophageal cancers in 2013, followed by adenocarcinomas (3.1%), and their incidences decreased. The proportion of localized and regional cancer tended to increase compared with that of distant cancer. Five‐year relative survival of squamous cell carcinoma improved from 12.1% (1993–1995) to 34.6% (2009–2013). Relative excess rate was 0.72 (95% confidence interval 0.65–0.80) in localized stage and 0.88 (95% confidence interval, 0.82–0.95) in regional stage comparing patients diagnosed from 2009 to 2013 and 2006 to 2008. Conclusions: The incidence of esophageal cancer has decreased in Korea for the past 15 years, and 5‐year survival rates have improved significantly. A precisely 230Th-dated stalagmite δ13C profile from Hulu Cave, China, is presented to characterize the frequency and pattern of millennial-scale Asian monsoon (AM) variability from 160.6 to 132.5 ka. Evidence for an antiphased relationship of the δ13C and δ18O on the millennial scale suggests that the δ13C is indicative of the local hydrological cycle associated with changes in AM strength. Owing to the δ13C responding to AM changes more sensitively than the δ18O, we could identify 15 strong AM events that correlate to cold intervals recorded in Antarctic ice cores within 230Th dating uncertainty. This result supports a dynamic link of AM strength and southern hemispheric climates via the cross-equatorial airflows. Power spectrum analysis shows a predominant periodicity of 1.5–2.5 ka for the δ13C profile, similar to the Dansgaard-Oeschger frequency during the last glacial period. Moreover, the AM events are characterized by rapid transitions at the onset, suggesting that the observed millennial-scale AM variability is likely forced by northern high-latitude climates via north–south shifts of the Intertropical Convergence Zone associated with the bipolar seesaw mechanism. A precisely 230 Th-dated stalagmite oxygen isotope (δ 18 O) record from Dragon Cave, Shanxi Province, northern China, is proposed to reconstruct the millennial-scale changes of the East Asian Summer monsoon (EASM) during the period 53.2–1.3 ka BP (before 1950 AD). Our record shows significant millennial-scale oscillations that match in timing, characteristic, and duration with the Dansgaard/Oeschger (DO) events 14–8 and the Heinrich events 5, 4, 2, and 1 (hereafter H5, H4, H2 and H1) in high-latitude regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Especially, the H5 event is well constrained from 48.1 to 46.9 ka BP with ten 230 Th dates. Our chronology supports the NGRIP GICC05 timescale from 50 to 38 ka BP. A comprehensive comparison of the Chinese speleothem records from different regions along a north-south transect shows a unique trend towards more negative δ 18 O values from 48.0 to 38.0 ka BP, suggesting that an intensified Asian summer monsoon (ASM) across the whole monsoonal China during the interval. We speculate that the joint effect, from both the cooling of the Southern Hemisphere and the enhanced land-sea temperature contrast due to the rising summer insolation, is capable to regulate the low-latitude large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns and exert significant influences on the long-term ASM variations during the middle of Marine Isotope Stage 3. Background: Trauma is a major health burden and a time-dependent critical emergency condition among developing and developed countries. In Asia, trauma has become a rapidly expanding epidemic and has spread out to many underdeveloped and developing countries through rapid urbanization and industrialization. Most casualties of severe trauma, which results in significant mortality and disability are assessed and transported by prehospital providers including physicians, professional providers, and volunteer providers. Trauma registries have been developed in mostly developed countries and measure care quality, process, and outcomes. In general, existing registries tend to focus on inhospital care rather than prehospital care. Methods: The Pan-Asia Trauma Outcomes Study (PATOS) was proposed in 2013 and initiated in November, 2015 in order to establish a collaborative standardized study to measure the capabilities, processes and outcomes of trauma care throughout Asia. The PATOS is an international, multicenter, and observational research network to collect trauma cases transported by emergency medical services (EMS) providers. Data are collected from the participating hospital emergency departments in various countries in Asia which receive trauma patients from EMS. Data variables collected include 1) injury epidemiologic factors, 2) EMS factors, 3) emergency department care factors, 4) hospital care factors, and 5) trauma system factors. The authors expect to achieve a sample size of 67,230 cases over the next 2 years of data collection to analyze the association between potential risks and outcomes of trauma. Karst ecosystems in southern China are species-rich and have high levels of endemism, yet little is known regarding the evolutionary processes responsible for the origin and diversification of karst biodiversity. The genus Primulina (Gesneriaceae) comprises ca. 170 species endemic to southern China with high levels of ecological (edaphic) specialization, providing an exceptional model to study the plant diversification in karsts. We used molecular data from nine chloroplast and 11 nuclear regions and macroevolutionary analyses to assess the origin and cause of species diversification due to palaeoenvironmental changes and edaphic specialization in Primulina. We found that speciation was positively associated with changes in past temperatures and East Asian monsoons through the evolutionary history of Primulina. Climatic change around the mid-Miocene triggered an early burst followed by a slowdown of diversification rate towards the present with the climate cooling. We detected different speciation rates among edaphic types, and transitions among soil types were infrequently and did not impact the overall speciation rate. Our findings suggest that both global temperature changes and East Asian monsoons have played crucial roles in floristic diversification within the karst ecosystems in southern China, such that speciation was higher when climate was warmer and wetter. This is the first study to directly demonstrate that past monsoon activity is positively correlated with speciation rate in East Asia. This case study could motivate further investigations to assess the impacts of past environmental changes on the origin and diversification of biodiversity in global karst ecosystems, most of which are under threat. Over the last few decades, international student mobility has come to be increasingly viewed in both scholarly and policy discourse as a valorised pathway to personal development, career success, and class reproduction. This framing of international study has been particularly prominent in accounts of mobility to Anglophone universities that have dominated the literature to date. Yet, despite these claims, most research has been undertaken with current students, and hence, the significance of international study has remained speculative and caught up with dominant discourses that tend to valorise this form of mobility. In this paper, we subject these claims to critical examination by analysing the narratives of alumni who have studied overseas in three leading universities in East Asia. We focus, in particular, on the ways in which international student mobility articulates through after-study lives in terms of the forms of situated learning and cultural capital expressed by alumni, the geographical configurations and circulations that shape the portability of education, and altered sensibility and onward mobilities that are generated through international study. Through this discussion, we demonstrate that international study often does have value in after-study lives, but that this value is highly situated in the networks and spaces that alumni move through and enact. Our paper then demonstrates that there is nothing automatic about the portability of overseas education, and that there is a need for scholars to examine not only student mobility itself but the way this unfolds into after-study lives. Introduction Data on statin safety in Asian patients are limited compared with evidence from Western populations. Aim This study assessed atorvastatin safety among Asian patients enrolled in 58 randomized clinical trials. Methods Data from 52 short-term trials (median exposure 4-72 weeks) and six long-term cardiovascular outcomes trials (median exposure 3.1-4.9 years) conducted across the atorvastatin 10-80-mg dose range were analyzed retrospectively to assess the incidence of safety endpoints. Results A total of 77 952 patients were identified (49 974 received atorvastatin), among whom 3191 were Asian (2519 received atorvastatin). In the short-term trials, the incidence of all-causality adverse events ( AEs) and serious AEs ( SAEs) in Asian patients treated with atorvastatin was similar to or lower than that observed with other statins or placebo, and discontinuations due to treatment-related AEs/ SAEs were infrequent (2.0% across all doses). These observations were confirmed in the long-term trials. Treatment-related SAEs were rare (n = 4) among Asian patients receiving atorvastatin. No cases of rhabdomyolysis were observed in atorvastatin-treated Asian patients, and the incidence of myalgia was 1.8% in the short-term studies and 6.7% in the long-term trials. Elevations (>3× the upper limit of normal) in liver transaminases were observed in ~2% of Asian patients receiving atorvastatin; renal AEs occurred in <2%. Conclusion The incidence of AEs/ SAEs with atorvastatin 10-40-mg in patients of Asian origin was low and comparable to placebo.
