As the second largest dust source on the globe, the tectonic and climatic evolution of continental Asia has an important impact on regional and global climate change. The West Pacific is the main sediment sink for eolian dust transported eastward from the Asian interior. Clay minerals, as the major fine-grained weathering products of continental rocks, can be readily transported by wind or currents over long distances and thus have been widely used in the reconstruction of paleoclimate and weathering history. However, the overall evolutionary tendency and response mechanism of clay mineral records over large spatial and long timescales across Asia remain unclear. Here, two continuous and high-resolution clay mineral records since 30 Ma were reconstructed from sediments at Deep Sea Drilling Program (DSDP) Sites 292 and 296 in the Philippine Sea. Clay minerals and Sr-Nd isotope compositions were used to constrain provenance and reconstruct the drying history of the dust source region since the Oligocene. The results show that the clay-sized detrital sediments in the Philippine Sea are a mixture of Asian eolian dust and volcanic materials from the West Pacific arcs. Based on the clay mineral compositions and eolian flux, we reveal that the Asian interior has been continuously drying since the late Oligocene and that stepwise enhanced aridification occurred at approximately 20, 14, 7, and 3 Ma. Compared with other regions of the world, the relative contents of illite and chlorite increased more dramatically in Asia during the late Cenozoic, and the inconsistency became more obvious at approximately 20 Ma. Since 3 Ma, illite and chlorite have increased consistently across the globe. Combined with the Asian tectonic and climatic history, we suggest that the increase in illite and chlorite from Asia between 20 and 3 Ma was mainly in response to the uplift of the Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau, whereas after 3 Ma, it was primarily controlled by global cooling driven by the expansion of the Arctic ice sheet. Despite the importance of the westerlies to the global climate system, we still know little about their long‐term evolution and possible orographic controls during the late Cenozoic because of the lack of sedimentary records with precise chronological control. Eolian deposition in the North Pacific preserved past information about the westerlies, the major wind system delivering Asian dust to the Pacific. A continuous, high‐resolution eolian flux record since 23 Ma was reconstructed from sediments at Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 296 in the North Pacific. Combined with dust flux at Ocean Drilling Program Site 1208, variations in their difference indicated a northwards shift of the westerlies during 23‒9 Ma and a relatively stable state since then. We suggest that Tibetan uplift since the early Miocene began to drive the poleward shift of the westerlies until 9 Ma, after which the westerlies remained relatively stable over Asia on million‐year timescales. Although numerous modern observations and orbital time‐scale studies of the Westerly wind have been conducted, we still know little about its evolution on million‐year time‐scales, which may modulate the overall amplitude of short‐term variations. In the past decade, the 800 km elongated mud belt off Zhejiang-Fujian coast, East China Sea (ECS), has been extensively studied for understanding the source to sink processes on the East Asian continental margin in the context of the Asian monsoon. However, to better understand the sediment source and dispersal pattern, the existing mineralogical and geochemical data of adjacent river systems, including the Changjiang River (CJR) and local rivers in Zhejiang, Fujian and Taiwan, need to be systematically reviewed. Therefore, various indicators from published literatures for the provenance discrimination in the mud belt have been summarised in this article. The results show that high diversity of clay mineral assemblages in fluvial sediments being supplied into the mud belt, e.g., dominant illite and chlorite in the CJR, absence of smectite in Taiwan rivers, similar amounts of the four clay mineral species in Zhejiang rivers, and dominant kaolinite in Fujian rivers. On heavy mineralogy, the CJR is dominated by dolomite, hornblende, and flaky minerals; and among of them, dolomite is distinctive for the CJR. For geochemical approaches, elemental compositions, combined with strontium and neodymium isotopes, reflect strong provenance control. However, geochemical and mineralogical compositions are found to vary with grain size, and thus extra caution should be taken when using these parameters as provenance indicator to discriminate the marine sediments with variety of grain-size fractions. In addition, pyrrhotite, occurred in fluvial sediments from western Taiwan, has not been found in sediments derived from mainland China, indicating that magnetic parameters could be used to discriminate sediment provenance. The mud belt formed during sea-level highstand, when modern current system in the ECS has been established, resulting in sediments derived from the CJR have been transported southward since 8 ka. In addition, sediment provenances have not been constant since initiation of the mud belt in response to climatic and oceanographic changes during the Holocene, which has been documented by mineral and geochemical signals. Nevertheless significant studies have been carried out, to better understand the formation mechanism for the mud belt and its implications for environmental changes, further studies on sediment provenance throughout the Holocene, in situ observation, and sedimentation dynamical modelling are required. We present high-resolution analyses of clay mineral assemblages combined with analysis of Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic compositions of the <2 μm silicate fraction of sediments from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site U1430 in the southern Sea of Japan, in order to trace the sources of clay minerals and reconstruct proxy records of past changes in Asian eolian input to the basin since 15 Ma. The clay mineral assemblages at IODP Site U1430 mainly consist of smectite (∼51%) and illite (∼36%), with minor kaolinite (∼7%) and chlorite (∼6%). Provenance analysis suggests that the fine-grained sediment at the study site is a two end-member mixture of eolian dust from Central Asia and fluvial input from the Japanese islands. The Central Asian end member supplied illite-rich and high 87 Sr/ 86 Sr and low ε Nd(0) eolian dust to the study site by wind, while the Japanese end member, characterized by young volcanic rocks, contributed smectite-rich, low 87 Sr/ 86 Sr and high ε Nd(0) weathering products via rivers. The ratio of illite/smectite and ε Nd(0) values of clay-sized silicate sediments at Site U1430 were used as proxies for tracing the changing strength of central Asian eolian input to the Sea of Japan, and thus reconstruct the aridification history of its source region. Our study presents for the first time a continuous, high-resolution record that highlights the four-step drying of Central Asia that occurred at ∼11.8 Ma, 8 Ma, 3.5 Ma and 1.2 Ma. Considered the nature and timing of major climatic and tectonic events in Asia, we conclude that the strengthened aridification of Central Asia starting at ∼11.8 Ma was possibly driven by the combined effect of Tibetan surface uplift and global cooling, whereas the rapid drying at ∼8 Ma was caused primarily by the uplift of the northern Tibetan Plateau. In contrast, global cooling, overwhelming the influence of Tibetan Plateau uplift, has become the primary control on Central Asia aridification since ∼3.5 Ma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The eolian component in Pacific Ocean sediments has been recognized as providing a direct link between the continental loess and marine δ 18O climate records over orbital timescales since 500ka. Here we extend this eolian record over the past one million years. We constructed high-resolution clay mineral stratigraphies based on δ 18O chronology in sediments from the International Marine Past Global Change (IMAGES) Core MD06-3050 from the West Philippine Sea in order to trace the sources of clay minerals and reconstruct proxy records of past changes in the Asian eolian input to the basin since 1.0Ma. The clay mineral assemblage in Core MD06-3050 mainly consists of smectite (~65%) and illite (~25%), with minor kaolinite (~5%) and chlorite (~5%). Provenance analysis suggests that smectite was derived mainly from the weathering of volcanic rocks on Luzon island, whereas illite, chlorite and kaolinite were mainly transported as eolian dust by the East Asian winter monsoon from central Asia. Illite/smectite values in Core MD06-3050 are generally higher and more variable during glacial periods and lower during interglacials, suggesting that higher eolian input to the West Philippine Sea generally co-varied with East Asian winter monsoon intensity and more aridity in continental Asia since 1.0Ma. Spectral analysis further reveals the close link between the extent of high-latitude glaciation, East Asian winter monsoon intensity and eolian input to the West Philippine Sea at eccentricity (100ka), obliquity (41ka) and precession (23ka) bands since 1.0Ma.
