Tiger fish (genus Datnioides) are critical ornamental and economic fish and are valuable freshwater fish worldwide, belonging to the order Lobotiformes. Currently, there are five extant species (Datnioides campbelli, D. microlepis, D. polota, D. pulcher, and D. undecimradiatus) of Datnioides in the world, usually inhabiting in south and southeast Asia. Due to the decline of wild population sizes of tiger fish and the lack of molecular research on them, in the present study, we sequenced, assembled, and characterized the complete nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) operon of all five extant tiger fish species, in order to elucidate the phylogenetic relationship among the genus Datnioides. The nrDNA sequences of five tiger fish species were 8548–9182 bp in length, encompassing complete 18S rDNA, ITS1, 5.8S rDNA, ITS2, 28S rDNA, and IGS regions. Numerous repetitive sequences were detected, substantially influencing the sequence length of different regions in each species. We employed maximum-likelihood (ML) method and Bayesian inference (BI) method to construct phylogenetic trees for Datnioides. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that each region in nrDNA operon is not sufficiently phylogenetically informative to delineate the species in Datnioides; nevertheless, the whole operon is able to delineate five tiger fish species much better, three of five species were successfully partitioned. Particularly, regardless of employed markers, it was strongly supported that D. campbelli was considerably partitioned from the other four species, possibly due to the geographical separation. In spite of the fact that discrimination of Datnioides species requires further investigation, our study provides reference genome resources for the Lobotiformes, as well as insights into the phylogenetic position of Lobotiformes and further biological conservation. The begomovirus–betasatellite complex constantly threatens crops in Asia. However, the quantitative relationship between begomoviruses and betasatellites remains largely unknown. The quantities of tobacco curly shoot virus (TbCSV) and its betasatellite (TbCSB) and their ratio varied significantly in initial infection, and thereafter, the ratio tended to become constant. The TbCSB/TbCSV ratio in agrobacteria inoculum significantly affected that in plants in the initial infection but not thereafter. Null-mutation of βC1 that encodes a multifunctional protein important for pathogenesis in TbCSB significantly reduced the TbCSB/TbCSV ratio in plants. Viral inoculum plants with higher TbCSB/TbCSV ratios promoted whitefly transmission of the virus. The expression of AV1 encoded by TbCSV, βC1 encoded by TbCSB and the βC1/AV1 ratio varied significantly in the initial infection and thereafter the ratio tended to become constant. Additionally, the temporal dynamics of the ratio between another begomovirus and its betasatellite was similar to that of TbCSV and was positively regulated by βC1. These results indicate that the ratio between monopartite begomoviruses and betasatellites tend to become constant as infection progresses, and is modulated by βC1, but a higher betasatellite/begomovirus ratio in virally inoculated plants promotes virus transmission by whiteflies. Aims: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) can remain undiagnosed for many years, during which micro‐ and macro‐vascular complications may develop. This study aimed to assess the worldwide prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in patients with newly diagnosed T2DM. Materials and Methods: We systematically searched electronic databases for relevant studies published from inception to 01 January 2022. Selected studies reported the prevalence of DR among patients with newly diagnosed T2DM, specifying the case definition used. Random‐effects meta‐analysis was used to derive the pooled prevalence. Subgroup and meta‐regression analyses were used to investigate variations in the prevalence estimates in terms of available variables. Results: Data from 77 studies including 99,847 patients with newly diagnosed T2DM were included from 26 countries. The pooled prevalence of DR among patients with newly diagnosed T2DM was 13.1% (95% CI, 11.1%–15.1%; I2 = 97.0%). DR was higher in clinic‐based samples compared with community‐based samples (15.0%, 95% CI = 12.4%–17.8% vs. 11.5%, 95% CI = 8.9%–14.5%; p = 0.05; I2 = 97.0%) and was higher in countries in the WHO African 19.2% (95% CI, 14.6%–24.3%; I2 = 76.0%), South‐East Asia 15.4% (95% CI, 10.0%–21.6%; I2 = 79.1%), and European 15.0% (95% CI, 11.2%–19.2%; I2 = 82.0%) regions. A higher proportion of female patients was significantly associated with a lower prevalence of DR in patients with newly diagnosed T2DM. We observed that the prevalence of DR in patients with newly diagnosed T2DM has remained unchanged over time. Conclusions: Globally, DR is a prevalent complication among patients with newly diagnosed T2DM indicating the importance of establishing effective strategies to promote regular screening for the early diagnosis of T2DM alongside routine ophthalmic assessment at the time of T2DM diagnosis to reduce the burden of vision‐threatening retinopathy. Background and aims: The itemization difference of patient-reported outcome (PRO) in hepatitis patients with different etiologies remains elusive in Asia. We aimed to assess the characteristics and the difference of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in chronic hepatitis B (CHB), chronic hepatitis C (CHC), and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients. Methods: We conducted the study in an outpatient setting. The 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) was completed by the patients upon the initial diagnosis and recruitment for a long-term follow-up purpose. The PRO results were also assessed by disease severity. Results: There were 244 patients (198 males) of CHB, 54 patients (29 males) of CHC, and 129 patients (85 males) of NAFLD, respectively. CHC patient had the mean score of 67.1 ± 23.3 in physical component summary (PCS) of the SF-36 health survey, which was significantly lower than CHB patients (76.4 ± 19.5), and NAFLD patients (77.5 ± 13.7), respectively (p = 0.001). The significantly lower performance of PCS in CHC patients was mainly attributed to the lower performance in physical functioning and bodily pain components. Higher fibrosis 4 index scores were significantly associated with lower PCS scores in all patient groups. There was no significant difference of mean mental component summary (MCS) between groups. However, NAFLD patients had significantly lower mental health scores than other groups (p = 0.02). Andrographolide is a labdane diterpenoid from Andrographis paniculata and has been used in the clinic for several decades to treat a variety of diseases in east Asia. In the present study, modification of 12-thioether andrographolide was carried out to seek compounds with better antitumor activity and drug-like properties. A series of novel 3,19-modified thioether andrographolide derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their in vitro anticancer activities against human breast cancer cells. Alpine meadows have been experiencing rapid shrub encroachment, which can have profound effects on the hydrological processes and functions of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, the headwater region of many of Asia's largest rivers. However, little is known about how increasing degrees of encroachment affect the herbaceous growth and the soil hydraulic properties of these ecosystems. To fill this knowledge gap, we examined various plant and soil characteristics across a gradient of shrub encroachment at four sites. These sites encompassed an undisturbed alpine meadow as well as alpine meadows experiencing varying degrees of shrub encroachment, ranging from light to moderate and severe. Our results showed that herbaceous cover, density, above- and belowground biomass, and species richness of all shrub-encroached meadows were significantly lower than those of the unaltered alpine meadow. Conversely, soil field water capacity, total porosity, and noncapillary porosity were significantly higher at the encroached sites. Importantly, as the percent shrub cover increased, soil volumetric water content decreased at shrub understories. In general, plant and soil characteristics were significantly more altered at shrub understories than at interspaces, and the magnitude of these modifications was highly correlated with the percent shrub cover. Our study demonstrates that shrub encroachment in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau improves soil hydraulic properties, but at the cost of alpine meadow herbaceous growth, and accompanied by a decrease in surface soil water content. Hence, we recommend that to effectively address shrub encroachment in these vital ecosystems, sustainable management strategies should prioritize the maintenance of grasslands and the protection of water resources. The middle and lower portions of the Yangtze River basin is the most species-rich region for freshwater mussels in Asia. The management and conservation of the taxa in this region has been greatly hampered by the lack of a well-developed phylogeny and species-level taxonomic framework. In this study, we tested the utility of two mitochondrial genes commonly used as DNA barcodes: the first subunit of the cytochrome oxidase c gene (COI) and the first subunit of the NADH dehydrogenase gene (ND1) for 34 putative species representing 15 genera, and also generated phylogenetic hypotheses for Chinese unionids based on the combined dataset of the two mitochondrial genes. The results showed that both loci performed well as barcodes for species identification, but the ND1 sequences provided better resolution when compared to COI. Based on the two-locus dataset, Bayesian Inference (BI) and Maximum Likelihood (ML) phylogenetic analyses indicated 3 of the 15 genera of Chinese freshwater mussels examined were polyphyletic. Additionally, the analyses placed the 15 genera into 3 subfamilies: Unioninae (Aculamprotula, Cuneopsis, Nodularia and Schistodesmus), Gonideninae (Lamprotula, Solenaia and Ptychorhychus) and Anodontinae (Cristaria, Arconaia, Acuticosta, Lanceolaria, Anemina and Sinoanodonta). Our results contradict previous taxonomic classification that placed the genera Arconaia, Acuticosta and Lanceolaria in the Unioninae. This study represents one of the first attempts to develop a molecular phylogenetic framework for the Chinese members of the Unionidae and will provide a basis for future research on the evolution, ecology, and conservation of Chinese freshwater mussels. • Shrub encroachment enhanced soil infiltration capacity of alpine meadow. • Infiltration rates were highest at the heavily encroached alpine meadow. • Shrub encroachment increased infiltrability by changing plant and soil conditions. • Shrub encroachment inhibits sedges growth, creating dead root channels. • Shrubs reduced soil moisture, reduced compaction, and enhanced aggregate stability. Due to global changes and anthropogenic disturbances shrubs are widely encroaching into alpine meadows, which may have profound impacts on the ecohydrological functioning of these key ecosystems. This phenomenon is particularly alarming in the alpine meadows of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, the headwaters for many of Asia's largest rivers. However, little is known about the extant in which shrub encroachment alters the infiltration capacity of those soils. Here we examined the effects of shrub encroachment on the plant community and soil infiltration processes by contrasting vegetation and infiltration variables between three areas: a reference alpine meadow, an alpine meadow lightly encroached by smaller shrubs, and an alpine meadow heavily encroached by larger shrubs. We found that shrub encroachment reduced herbaceous plants aboveground biomass by 10–24 g m−2 and root biomass by 1346–2239 g m−2. The sedge functional group was gradually replaced by forbs. Initial infiltration rates gradually increased with shrub encroachment, and were approximately doubled and tripled at the earlier and later stages of encroachment, respectively. Overall, shrub encroachment improved the soil infiltrability by changing soil conditions and inhibiting herbaceous species due to the reduction of surface mattic epipedon and the formation of dead root channels. These findings suggest that the rapid transformation of alpine meadows into shrublands could have drastic effects on the surface runoff and streamflow dynamics of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Chronic pain is a complex problem that eludes precise definition and can be clinically difficult to diagnose and challenging to treat. In the Asia-Pacific region, prevalence estimates that chronic pain ranges from 12% to 45% of the population, with musculoskeletal, rheumatic or osteoarthritis pain making up the majority of the disease burden. Implementation of current management guidelines into routine clinical practice has been challenging and as a result, patients with musculoskeletal pain are often poorly managed. For these reasons, a multidisciplinary Chronic Pain Advisory Board of leading physicians from various Asian countries was convened to explore ways to improve treatment and compliance, especially among patients with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. We have identified a number of unmet therapeutic needs and prioritized initiatives with the potential to contribute toward a more integrated approach to chronic pain management. Key priorities included using evidence-based interventions as recommended by current guidelines, particularly those aspects pertinent to addressing treatment priorities in Asia (e.g., patient compliance), and the incorporation of cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors and non-steroid anti-inflammation drugs into the management algorithms for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Treatment must be individualized for each patient based on efficacy, side-effect profile and drug accessibility. Further studies are required to examine head-to-head comparisons among analgesics, combinations of analgesics and long-term efficacy outcomes. Cornus officinalis Sieb. et Zucc. (Shanzhuyu), a herb and food plant in east Asia, has the properties of tonifying the liver and kidney, and nourishing the essence according to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine. C. officinalis has been commonly used to treat asthenia diseases, liver, and kidney diseases, and reproductive system diseases since ancient times. The objectives of this article were to review the pharmacological effects and phytochemistry of C. officinalis. We conducted a literature review of the pharmacological effects of C. officinalis by different systems and compared the effects with the traditional usages, discussed the research status and potential blanks to be filled. The experimental studies showed that C. officinalis extract and its active components had various pharmacological effects such as anti-oxidation, anti-apoptosis, anti-inflammation, anti-diabetes, anti-osteoporosis, immunoregulation, neuroprotection, and cardiovascular protection, but clinical studies are still needed to assess whether the reported pharmacological activities have confirmed efficacy. This article presents an empirical ranking of international financial centers in the Asia-Pacific region. The Asia-Pacific region includes a number of national economies that have, over the past few years, experienced very high rates of economic growth. Development in the region has typically emphasized export-oriented industrialization and the improvement of domestic infrastructure and these objectives have created a substantial demand for capital. Many governments have taken measures to deregulate their financial sectors during the 1980s, and there have been substantial inflows of foreign capital in search of lucrative investment opportunities. As a result, the financial markets in these countries have expanded rapidly, in terms of the volume of financial transactions, the range and variety of financial instruments, and the efficiency of the financial systems. There are already three well established international financial centers in the region: Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo. A successful financial reform program during the 1980s led to the emergence of Sydney as a potential rival.

As the carbon monoxide (CO) total column over Asia is among the highest in the world, it is important to characterize its variations in space and time. Using Measurements of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT) and Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) satellite data, the variations and trends in CO total column over Asia and its seven subregions during 2003–2017 are investigated in this study. The CO total column in Asia is higher in spring and winter than in summer and autumn. The seasonal maximum and minimum are in spring and summer respectively in the regional mean over Asia, varying between land and oceans, as well as among the subregions. The CO total column in Asia shows strong interannual variation, with a regional mean coefficient of variation of 5.8% in MOPITT data. From 2003 to 2017, the annual mean of CO total column over Asia decreased significantly at a rate of (0.58 ± 0.15)% per year (or −(0.11 ± 0.03) × 1017 molecules cm−2 per year) in MOPITT data, resulting from significant CO decreases in winter, summer, and spring. In most of the subregions, significant decreasing trends in CO total column are also observed, more obviously over areas with high CO total column, including eastern regions of China and the Sichuan Basin. The regional decreasing trends in these areas are over 1% per year. Over the entire Asia, and in fire-prone subregions including South Siberia, Indo-China Peninsula, and Indonesia, we found significant correlations between the MOPITT CO total column and the fire counts from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). The variations in MODIS fire counts may explain 58%, 60%, 36%, and 71% of the interannual variation in CO total column in Asia and these three subregions, respectively. Over different land cover types, the variations in biomass burning may explain 62%, 52%, and 31% of the interannual variation in CO total column, respectively, over the forest, grassland, and shrubland in Asia. Extremes in CO total column in Asia can be largely explained by the extreme fire events, such as the fires over Siberia in 2003 and 2012 and over Indonesia in 2006 and 2015. The significant decreasing trends in MODIS fire counts inside and outside Asia suggest that global biomass burning may be a driver for the decreasing trend in CO total column in Asia, especially in spring. In general, the variations and trends in CO total column over Asia detected by AIRS are similar to but smaller than those by MOPITT. The two datasets show similar spatial and temporal variations in CO total column over Asia, with correlation coefficients of 0.86–0.98 in the annual means. This study shows that the interannual variation in atmospheric CO in Asia is sensitive to biomass burning, while the decreasing trend in atmospheric CO over Asia coincides with the decreasing trend in MODIS fire counts from 2003 to 2017. We established the NHRI-HN1 cell line from a mouse tongue tumor induced by 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4-NQO)/arecoline, with further selection for cell stemness via in vitro sphere culture, to evaluate potential immunotherapies for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) in East and Southeast Asia. In vivo and in vitro phenotypic characterization, including tumor growth, immune modulator administration, gene expression, morphology, migration, invasion, and sphere formation assays, were conducted. NHRI-HN1 cells are capable of generating orthotopic tumors in syngeneic mice. Interestingly, immune stimulation via CpG oligodeoxynucleotide (CpG-ODN) dramatically reduced the tumor growth in NHRI-HN1 cell-injected syngeneic mice. The pathways enriched in genes that were differentially expressed in NHRI-HN1 cells when compared to non-tumorigenic cells were similar to those that were identified when comparing human OSCC and non-tumorous tissues. NHRI-HN1 cells have characteristics of epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT), including enhanced migration and invasion. NHRI-HN1 cells showed aggressive cell growth and sphere formation. The blockage of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) activation suppressed cell migration and reduced stemness characteristics in NHRI-HN1 cells, similar to human OSCC cell lines. Our data suggest that NHRI-HN1 cells, showing tumorigenic characteristics of EMT, cancer stemness, and ERK activation, are sufficient in modeling human OSCC and also competent for use in investigating oral cancer immunotherapies. Paying attention to the relationship between EIA signatures and earthquakes can be useful to further understand the earthquake anomalies and seismo-ionospheric coupling mechanism. Based on the GIM TEC data, the EIA north crest signature in the south Asia region was investigated for 92 M ≥ 6.0 earthquakes from 1999 to 2022. A running mean method was utilized to extract the anomalies potentially associated with earthquakes. It was found that before the strong earthquakes, the EIA north crest significantly moves equatorward, and the formation time of the crest appears earlier than that in normal days. The TEC strength of EIA north crest can both increase or decrease prior to earthquakes. The results in this study further imply that the abnormal electric field formed around the epicenter is potential the main channel of Lithosphere-Atmosphere-Ionosphere Coupling (LAIC) mechanisms during the earthquake preparation period. [Display omitted] • Collabieae originated in Asia and independently spread to other tropics via LDD. • Asian lineages had higher net diversification and niche rates. • Different net diversification rate is the main driver for species richness disparity. Species richness is spatially heterogeneous even in the hyperdiverse tropical floras. The main cause of uneven species richness among the four tropical regions are hot debated. To date, higher net diversification rates and/or longer colonization time have been usually proposed to contribute to this pattern. However, there are few studies to clarify the species richness patterns in tropical terrestrial floras. The terrestrial tribe Collabieae (Orchidaceae) unevenly distributes in the tropical regions with a diverse and endemic center in Asia. Twenty-one genera 127 species of Collabieae and 26 DNA regions were used to reconstruct the phylogeny and infer the biogeographical processes. We compared the topologies, diversification rates and niche evolutionary rates of Collabieae and regional lineages on empirical samplings and different simulated samplings fractions respectively. Our results suggested that the Collabieae originated in Asia at the earliest Oligocene, and then independently spread to Africa, Central America, and Oceania since the Miocene via long-distance dispersal. These results based on empirical data and simulated data were similar. BAMM, GeoSSE and niche analyses inferred that the Asian lineages had higher net diversification and niche evolutionary rates than those of Oceanian and African lineages on the empirical and simulated analyses. Precipitation is the most important factor for Collabieae, and the Asian lineage has experienced more stable and humid climate, which may promote the higher net diversification rate. Besides, the longer colonization time may also be associated with the Asian lineages' diversity. Late Quaternary loess deposits from the Tianshan Mountains are potentially valuable archives for the study of environmental change. However, the reported chronologies of the loess deposits in this area are still controversial. Previous studies have shown that there remain discrepancies between the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14C ages of the loess deposits from the Yili Valley. To establish a robust chronological sequence of the Shichengzi section (SCZ17) from the northern slope of the Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang, we adopted both AMS14C and quartz OSL dating methods and the dates-based chronology was further refined by correlating sedimentary proxies (loss-on-ignition and grain size) with the proxy information from other sequences. Comparison of the AMS 14C and quartz OSL ages suggests that the AMS 14C ages of bulk organic matter are generally younger than the quartz OSL ages, with the maximum age discrepancy reaching up to ~10 ka. Regional correlation of the Holocene lithology of the SCZ17 section with other Holocene lithologies from the Tianshan Mountains reveals that the Holocene paleosol formation occurred in the late Holocene. The analyzed proxy data (e.g., grain size, carbonate content) indicate a cold and dry climate from 21.6 to ~10 ka, and a persistent wetting trend during the past ~10 ka. Abstract: Aim of the study: Gypenosides, the saponins extract derived from Gynostemma pentaphyllum Makino, have been used for treating hepatitis and cancer in Asia. Our previous study demonstrates that gypenosides inhibit the onset and improve the recovery of liver fibrosis induced by CCl4 in rats. In this study, we used the isolated rat hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) as a model to study the cellular mechanism of gypenosides-inhibited liver fibrosis. Materials and methods: Rat HSCs was treated with PDGF, gypenosides or vehicle. Cell viability was assessed by trypan blue staining. Apoptosis and cell cycle were evaluated by flow cytometry. The activation or inhibition of signal molecules was detected by Western blotting. Results: Our results showed that 500μg/ml gypenosides decreased PDGF-induced rat HSCs numbers (8750±2629 versus 103,000±6683, p <0.001, 95% confidence interval) and arrested cells at the G1 phase without the presence of sub-G1 fraction. Analysis of PDGF-induced proliferative molecules including phosphorylation of Akt and p70S6K, gypenosides inhibited the activation of this signal pathway. Furthermore, gypenosides down-regulated the protein expression of cell cycle G1-specific cyclin D1 and D3. Conclusions: Gypenosides inhibited PDGF-induced HSCs proliferation by inhibiting the signal pathway of PDGF-Akt-p70S6K and down-regulation of cyclin D1 and D3 expression. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• Monthly runoff is divided into several subseries by variational mode decomposition. • Support vector machine models the input-output relationships of all the subseries. • Quantum-behaved particle swarm algorithm searches for suitable model parameters. • The hybrid method obtains satisfying results in the real-world simulations. Accurate monthly runoff prediction plays an important role in the planning and management of water resources. However, owing to climate changes and human activities, natural runoff often contains a variety of frequency components, and existing monthly runoff estimation techniques may fail to capture potential change processes effectively. To overcome this problem, we have developed a hybrid model for monthly runoff prediction. First, observed runoff is decomposed into several subcomponents via variational mode decomposition. Second, support vector machine models based on quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization are adopted to identify the input-output relationships hidden in each subcomponent. Finally, the total output of all submodules is treated as the final forecasting result for the original runoff. Three quantitative indexes are considered to test the performance of the developed models. The monthly streamflow of two reservoirs in China's Yangtze Valley is considered as the survey target. This area contains the world's largest hydropower project (Three Gorges Reservoir) and the waterhead of the middle line of Asia's largest inter-basin water transfer project (Danjiangkou Reservoir). Test results indicate that the hybrid model provides better forecasting accuracy compared to several traditional methods (artificial neural networks and extreme learning machines), making it an effective tool for the scientific operation of hydropower reservoirs. Background: There is a dearth of information on male dementia caregivers in Asia and, in particular, on the factors relating to caregiver burden. We aimed to identify factors that may be associated with burden among male caregivers of people with dementia (PWD)., Methods: Data were collected from a national dementia registration survey. The caregiver burden was measured with the short version of the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI). We analyzed the correlation between ZBI scores and variables, such as demographic data of PWD and their male caregivers, caregivers' monthly income, the relationship between PWD and caregivers, the severity of dementia, physical comorbidities and activities of daily living (ADL) of PWD, and neuropsychiatric symptoms assessed by the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI)., Results: A total of 509 PWD and their male caregivers were included. The majority of caregivers were sons (72.1%) and husbands (22.0%). Sons had higher ZBI scores than husbands (28.5 ± 15.2 vs 22.0 ± 17.0; p < 0.001). Multivariable linear regression showed that sons as caregivers (β = 7.44, p = 0.034), ADL (β = 0.52, p = 0.002), and NPI&#95;severity subscore of apathy (β = 2.74, p = 0.001) were positively associated with ZBI scores., Conclusion: Poor ADL and apathy in PWD and being a patient's son were associated with higher levels of burden among male dementia caregivers. Background: Previous studies have reported the association between Mycoplasma fermentans (M. fermentans) and the risk of human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) infection, but the results were inconsistent. The present study aims to systematically review reported studies on M. fermentans and its association with HIV-1 infection, as well as to summarize the findings using a meta-analysis., Methods: Studies meeting the inclusion criteria in the PubMed, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WanFang Data, and Chongqing VIP databases up to March 2019 were identified. Cochran Q and I statistics were used to assess heterogeneity. Additionally, pooled odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated and displayed by Forest plots. Also, the funnel plot, Begg test, and Egger test were used to evaluate potential publication bias. In addition, the source of heterogeneity was investigated by subgroup and sensitivity analyses., Results: A total of 11 studies comprising 1028 HIV-1-positive patients and 1298 controls were ultimately included in this meta-analysis. Our results indicated that M. fermentans could increase the risk of HIV-1 infection among humans (OR = 3.66, 95%CI 1.26-10.64). Subgroup analysis showed that the risk of HIV-1 infection associated with M. fermentans was, based on the geographical distribution, 1.19 (95%CI 0.33-4.33) in Europe, 2.83 (95%CI 0.94-8.52) in United States, 11.92 (95%CI 3.93-36.15) in Asia; based on the source of the sample, 2.97 (95%CI 0.89-9.95) in blood samples, 4.36 (95%CI 1.63-11.68) in urine samples; based on the detection method, 2.80 (95%CI 0.72-10.96) with the polymerase chain reaction method, 5.54 (95%CI 1.21-25.28) with other detection methods; based on the source of controls, 1.91 (95%CI 0.53-6.89) in sexually transmitted diseases individuals, and 8.25 (95%CI 2.16-31.60) in health individuals., Conclusion: Our study revealed evidence of the association between M. fermentans and HIV-1 infection. Considering the heterogeneity, further studies are warranted to understand the relationship between M. fermentans and HIV-1 infection.

Aim: We report tofacitinib efficacy and safety in Asia-Pacific patients who participated in the rheumatoid arthritis (RA) clinical development program., Method: This post-hoc analysis included pooled data from patients with RA in the Asia-Pacific region treated with tofacitinib with/without conventional synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs in Phase (P)1, 2, 3, and long-term extension (LTE) studies (one LTE ongoing; January 2016 data-cut). Efficacy was assessed over 24 months in patients who received tofacitinib 5 (N = 397) or 10 (N = 382) mg twice daily or placebo (N = 243) in three P2 and five P3 studies. Endpoints included American College of Rheumatology (ACR)20/50/70 responses, Disease Activity Score in 28 joints, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (DAS28-4[ESR]) and Clinical Disease Activity Index (CDAI) remission rates, and change from baseline in Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index (∆HAQ-DI). Safety data pooled over 92 months from one P1, four P2, six P3, and two LTE studies for all tofacitinib doses (N = 1464) included incidence rates (IRs) (patients with events/100 patient-years) for adverse events (AEs) of special interest., Results: At month 3, patients receiving tofacitinib 5/10 mg twice daily improved vs placebo in ACR20 (69.2%/77.9% vs 27.5%), ACR50 (36.9%/44.4% vs 9.5%), and ACR70 (15.1%/22.4% vs 2.7%) responses, remission rates for DAS28-4(ESR) (8.5%/18.5% vs 2.6%) and CDAI (6.1%/12.3% vs 0.5%), and ∆HAQ-DI (-0.5/-0.6 vs -0.1); improvements were sustained through 24 months. IRs (95% CI) were 9.4 (8.5, 10.3) for serious AEs, 9.1 (8.3, 10.1) for discontinuations due to AEs, 3.7 (3.2, 4.3) for serious infections, 5.9 (5.2, 6.7) for herpes zoster, and 0.8 (0.6, 1.1) for malignancies (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer)., Conclusion: In Asia-Pacific patients, tofacitinib improved signs/symptoms over 24 months. Background: Previous studies in western countries have shown that about 30%-50% of patients with frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) have a positive family history, whereas the few epidemiological studies on FTLD done in Asia reported much lower frequencies. It is not clear the reason why the frequencies of FTLD with positive family history were lower in Asia. Furthermore, these findings were not from studies focused on family history. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct further studies on the family history of FTLD in Asia. This international multi-center research aims to investigate the family histories in patients with FTLD and related neurodegenerative diseases such as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), corticobasal syndrome (CBS), and motor neuron diseases in a larger Asian cohort., Methods: Participants were collected from five countries: India, Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan, and Philippines. All patients were diagnosed with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), semantic dementia (SD), progressive non-fluent aphasia (PA), frontotemporal dementia with motor neuron disease (FTD/MND), PSP, and corticobasal degeneration (CBD) according to international consensus criteria. Family histories of FTLD and related neurodegenerative diseases were investigated in each patient., Results: Ninety-one patients were included in this study. Forty-two patients were diagnosed to have bvFTD, two patients had FTD/MND, 22 had SD, 15 had PA, one had PA/CBS, five had CBS and four patients had PSP. Family history of any FTLD spectrum disorder was reported in 9.5% in bvFTD patients but in none of the SD or PA., Conclusion: In contrast to patients of the western countries, few Asian FTLD patients have positive family histories of dementia.

We sequenced 15 complete mitochondrial genomes and performed comprehensive molecular phylogenetic analyses to study the origin and phylogeny of the Hynobiidae, an ancient lineage of living salamanders. Our phylogenetic analyses show that the Hynobiidae is a clade with well resolved relationships, and our results contrast with a morphology-based phylogenetic hypothesis. These salamanders have low vagility and are limited in their distribution primarily by deserts, mountains, and oceans. Our analysis suggests that the relationships among living hynobiids have been shaped primarily by geography. We show that four-toed species assigned to Batrachuperus do not form a monophyletic group, and those that occur in Afghanistan and Iran are transferred to the resurrected Paradactylodon. Convergent morphological characters in different hynobiid lineages are likely produced by similar environmental selective pressures. Clock-independent molecular dating suggests that hynobiids originated in the Middle Cretaceous [ approximately 110 million years ago (Mya)]. We propose an "out of North China" hypothesis for hynobiid origins and hypothesize an ancestral stream-adapted form. Given the particular distributional patterns and our molecular dating estimates, we hypothesize that: (i) the interior desertification from Mongolia to Western Asia began approximately 50 Mya; (ii) the Tibetan plateau (at least on the eastern fringe) experienced rapid uplift approximately 40 Mya and reached an altitude of at least 2,500 m; and (iii) the Ailao-Red River shear zone underwent the most intense orogenic movement approximately 24 Mya.

Domestic chickens have long been important to human societies for food, religion, entertainment, and decorative uses, yet the origins and phylogeography of chickens through Eurasia remain uncertain. Here, we assessed their origins and phylogeographic history by analyzing the mitochondrial DNA hypervariable segment I (HVS-I) for 834 domestic chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) across Eurasia as well as 66 wild red jungle fowls (Gallus gallus) from Southeast Asia and China. Phylogenetic analyses revealed nine highly divergent mtDNA clades (A-I) in which seven clades contained both the red jungle fowls and domestic chickens. There was no breed-specific clade in the chickens. The clades A, B, and E are distributed ubiquitously in Eurasia, while the other clades were restricted to South and Southeast Asia. Clade C was mainly distributed in Japan and Southeast China, while clades F and G were exclusive to Yunnan, China. The geographic distribution of clade D was closely related to the distribution of the pastime of cock fighting. Statistical tests detect population expansion within each subclade. These distinct distribution patterns and expansion signatures suggest that different clades may originate from different regions, such as Yunnan, South and Southwest China and/or surrounding areas (i.e., Vietnam, Burma, and Thailand), and the Indian subcontinent, respectively, which support the theory of multiple origins in South and Southeast Asia.

Background and Aim: Helicobacter pylori is etiologically associated with gastritis and gastric cancer. There are significant geographical differences between the clinical manifestation of H. pylori infections. The aim of this study was to compare gastric mucosal histology in relation to age among H. pylori-infected patients from different geographical areas using the same grading system. The prevalence of atrophy and intestinal metaplasia were also compared with the respective gastric cancer incidence in the different countries., Methods: A total of 1906 patients infected with H. pylori from seven countries were evaluated. Entry criteria included H. pylori positive cases with antral and corpus biopsies between the ages of 18 and 75 years. The minimum number of cases required from a country was 100. Hematoxylin-eosin stained biopsies from antrum and corpus were scored semiquantitatively using the parameters suggested by the Sydney Classification System. Statistical evaluation was performed using Kruskal-Wallis test and Spearman's rank correlation test., Results: The severity of gastric atrophy varied among the different groups with the highest scores being present in Japan. The lowest scores were found in four European countries and in Thailand. The scores for intestinal metaplasia were low in general except for Xi-an, Japan, and Shanghai. For all the countries, the presence of atrophy in the antrum correlated well (r = 0.891) with the incidence of gastric cancer., Conclusion: Using a standardized grading system in a large study of H. pylori-related geographic pathology, we found major differences in the overall prevalence and severity of H. pylori gastritis in relation to age. These differences mirrored the respective incidences of gastric cancer in those geographical areas.
