This paper is part of an ongoing research project that seeks to examine human rights from a comparative perspective. We examine how human rights have evolved in Asia as a whole. The western conceptualization of human rights has continually been challenged by Asian values. The background for this friction is found in the debate on globalization. To what extent does the liberal orthodox view prevail, or to what extent is economic success dependent on a strong state. We examine this debate in both a qualitative and quantitative manner. The quantitative research shows some qualified support for orthodox liberalism. Economic globalization does accompany improved human rights on the whole. However, the qualitative case reveals that orthodox liberalism fuels some of the more egregious human rights abuses. We look in depth at child labor and the growing epidemic of sex trafficking that prevails in much of Asia today. We further discuss regional differences in the realization of human rights in Asia. ..PAT.-Conference Proceeding [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
