Eremurus, a perennial rhizomatous mesophytic ornamental plant and one of the largest genera of the family Asphodelaceae, is distributed mainly in southwestern and central Asia. We sequenced the complete chloroplast genomes of ten species corresponding to all sections of the genus and analyzed their basic structure and evolutionary relationships. The cp genomes showed significant similarities in size, gene sequences, gene classes, and inverted repeat regions (IRs). The complete chloroplast genome of Eremurus has a typical tetrad structure, ranging in length from 153,782 bp (E. lactiflorus) to 155,482 bp (E. aitchisonii). The length of the large single-copy region (LSC) ranges from 84,005 bp (E. lactiflorus) to 84,711 bp (E. robustus), that of the small single-copy region (SSC) ranges from 16,727 bp (E. soogdianus) to 17,824 bp (E. suworowii), and that of the inverted repeat regions (IR) ranges from 26,484 bp (E. lactiflorus) to 26,597 bp (E. inderiensis and E. soogdianus). A total of 131 genes were detected, including 85 protein-coding genes, 8 rRNA genes, and 38 tRNA genes. In addition, we found seven common and eight unique SSRs in ten Eremurus species. Among the protein-coding genes, five highly variable genes (ycf1, rps15, rps16, and rpl36) with high Pi values were detected and showed potential as DNA barcodes for the genus. Three genes (rps19, ycf1, and ndhB) had positive Ka/Ks values. Codon usage patterns were very similar across species: 33 codons had relative synonymous codon usage values of more than one, of which three ended with G, and the remaining codons ended with A and U. Phylogenetic analyses using complete cp genomes and 81 protein-coding genes confirmed previous studies with the genus as well as subgenus Eremurus monophyletic and the subgenus Henningia paraphyletic. Despite the well‐known biogeographic pattern in the Northern Hemisphere of disjunct distributions in plants between eastern Asia and North America, many details regarding the evolution of the disjunction between lineages of tropical Asia and tropical America remain poorly understood. Berchemia (Rhamnaceae), comprising ca. 32 species, is distributed predominantly in tropical regions of east to southeast Asia and North America. However, the phylogeny and biogeography of this genus are still not clear. Furthermore, fossils of the genus have been found in Europe, making it an ideal group to understand the biogeographical story of tropical disjunction in the Northern Hemisphere. With two nuclear (ETS, ITS) and three plastid (petA‐psbJ, psbA‐trnH, trnL‐F) DNA regions, we first reconstructed the phylogeny of Berchemia with Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood approaches. Our results indicated that Berchemia, excluding the African species B. discolor and B. zeyheri, which were placed into the reinstated Phyllogeiton, was well‐supported as monophyletic. Divergence times and ancestral areas were inferred using a Bayesian uncorrelated lognormal relaxed molecular clock model and Bayesian binary MCMC method, respectively. The core Berchemia likely originated in the Western Tethys during the middle Eocene, then formed the tropical Asia and tropical America disjunction during the Oligocene and further diversified in Asia from the early Miocene on. The formation and diversification of the core Berchemia likely resulted from a mixture of geologic events, such as the close of the Tethys Ocean, disappearance of the North Atlantic Land Bridges, uplift of the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau, and climatic events, such as the establishment and enhancement of Asian monsoons. Investigating the biogeographical disjunction of East Asian and North American flora is key to understanding the formation and dynamics of biodiversity in the Northern Hemisphere. The small Cupressaceae genus Thuja, comprising five species, exhibits a typical disjunct distribution in East Asia and North America. Owing to obscure relationships, the biogeographical history of the genus remains controversial. Here, complete plastomes were employed to investigate the plastome evolution, phylogenetic relationships, and biogeographic history of Thuja. All plastomes of Thuja share the same gene content arranged in the same order. The loss of an IR was evident in all Thuja plastomes, and the B-arrangement as previously recognized was detected. Phylogenomic analyses resolved two sister pairs, T. standishii-T. koraiensis and T. occidentalis-T. sutchuenensis, with T. plicata sister to T. occidentalis-T. sutchuenensis. Molecular dating and biogeographic results suggest the diversification of Thuja occurred in the Middle Miocene, and the ancestral area of extant species was located in northern East Asia. Incorporating the fossil record, we inferred that Thuja likely originated from the high-latitude areas of North America in the Paleocene with a second diversification center in northern East Asia. The current geographical distribution of Thuja was likely shaped by dispersal events attributed to the Bering Land Bridge in the Miocene and subsequent vicariance events accompanying climate cooling. Mazaceae, a recently proposed family in the Lamiales, contains three genera; Mazus, Lancea and Dodartia, yet the systematic position and the circumscription of the family have not been fully confirmed. This paper reports on an expanded analysis of the family that included most species of all three genera using five chloroplast DNA regions (matK, psbA‐trnH intergenic spacer, rbcL, rps16, trnL‐F intergenic spacer) and ITS of nrDNA to determine the phylogenetic placement of Mazaceae as well as the intrageneric relationships within the relatively large genus Mazus. The results support the recognition of the three genera (Mazus, Lancea, Dodartia), confirm the well‐supported monophyly of Mazaceae and show Lancea and Dodartia to be clustered together and sister to Mazus. The phylogenetic relationships within the Lamiales is highly congruent with previous molecular studies, with Mazaceae sister to a clade comprising Orobanchaceae, Phrymaceae and Paulowniaceae. Together they are sister to the rest of the families in the order. In Mazus, two major lineages were recognized, corresponding to the distribution ranges in Australia and Asia. Previous sectional treatments of Mazus are discussed in light of our molecular phylogenetic results. This study confirms the systematic position of Mazaceae within the Lamiales. The intrageneric relationships revealed in Mazus will provide evidence for further taxonomic studies of the genus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The geographical distribution of pollinators is an important factor determining the biogeographical pattern of floral evolution and diversification. In Africa, a guild of plant species has converged in a floral syndrome for pollination by long‐tongued hawkmoths (predominantly Agrius convolvuli). It is hypothesized that such floral convergence could track the geographical distribution of long‐tongued hawkmoths, so it may not be confined to Africa. We investigated the pollination biology of Lilium sargentiae E. H. Wilson, which is endemic to China and exhibits traits suggestive of long‐tongued hawkmoth pollination. Lilium sargentiae was visited by A. convolvuli as well as small beetles (Nitidulidae) but pollination was mostly or totally effected by the moth. It was consistent with other hawkmoth‐pollinated plants in terms of floral tube length, nectar traits, tepal reflectance, and scent composition. We present the first experimental evidence for the hypothesis proposed above and for hawkmoth pollination in the widespread and ornamentally and economically important genus Lilium L. in a natural habitat. Our findings imply that long‐tongued hawkmoths (especially the extremely widespread A. convolvuli) as a distinctive pollinator niche may have underlain the evolution of long‐tubed (>8 cm) flowers across different continents. Aim We investigated the biogeography of the subtropical mountain genus Tripterospermum Blume (Gentianaceae), disjunctly distributed at the southern fringe of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau ( QTP) and other mountain systems within the biodiversity hotspots of Southeast Asia. This study reveals dispersal routes among these areas. Location East China, Indochina, Japan, the Philippines, southeastern fringe of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (southern Himalaya and Hengduanshan), Taiwan, Wallacea. Methods The evolutionary history of Tripterospermum was studied using the phylogenetic reconstructions (Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference using ITS, atpB-rbcL and trnL-trnF), molecular dating (using BEAST with a relaxed clock model and fossil constraints), and two approaches of ancestral area reconstructions ( DEC, S- DIVA). Our sampling design included 82% of the extant species of subtropical Gentianinae ( Tripterospermum, Metagentiana, Sinogentiana and Crawfurdia) as ingroup, and Kuepferia, Gentiana and other Gentianaceae genera as outgroups. Results Subtropical Gentianinae originated at the southeastern fringe of the QTP (the southern Himalaya and Hengduanshan) between 16 and 35 million years ago (Ma). With a crown age estimated to be 2.7-8.8 million years (Myr), Tripterospermum originated at the southeastern fringe of the QTP, from where it dispersed to East China, Indochina, Sundaland, Taiwan, Japan and Wallacea. Main conclusions For Tripterospermum, the southern Himalaya and the Hengduanshan have acted as a source area for the colonization of East and Southeast Asia. This study depicts dispersal routes among the biodiversity hotspots neighbouring the QTP and those located on Sundaland and Wallacea. Mountain plants seem to have colonized Wallacea using a northern route via Taiwan rather than a more southern route via Sundaland. The latter route has previously been recorded for many lowland lineages. Because Tripterospermum species-producing berries have dispersed more often across geographical barriers than those producing capsules, we hypothesize that avian transportation of berry-like fruits might have facilitated their dispersal. Phylogenetic analyses were conducted for Astilbe ( Saxifragaceae), an Asian/eastern North American disjunct genus, using sequences of nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer ( ITS) and plastid mat K, trnL-trn F and psb A-trnH regions. The monophyly of Astilbe is well supported by both ITS and plastid sequences. Topological incongruence was detected between the plastid and the ITS trees, particularly concerning the placement of the single North American species, A. biternata, which may be most probably explained by its origin involving hybridization and/or allopolyploidy with plastid capture. In Astilbe, all species with hermaphroditic flowers constitute a well-supported clade; dioecious species form a basal grade to the hermaphroditic clade. Astilbe was estimated to have split with Saxifragopsis from western North America at 20.69 Ma (95% HPD: 12.14-30.22 Ma) in the early Miocene. This intercontinental disjunction between Astilbe and Saxifragopsis most likely occurred via the Bering land bridge. The major clade of Astilbe (all species of the genus excluding A. platyphylla) was inferred to have a continental Asian origin. At least three subsequent migrations or dispersals were hypothesized to explain the expansion of Astilbe into North America, Japan and tropical Asian islands. The intercontinental disjunct lineage in Astilbe invokes a hybridization event either in eastern Asia or in North America. This disjunction in Astilbe may be explained by a Beringian migration around 3.54 Ma (95% high posterior density: 1.29-6.18 Ma) in the late Tertiary, although long-distance dispersal from eastern Asia to North America is also likely. Peracarpeae is a small tribe consisting of three genera: Homocodon, Heterocodon and Peracarpa, with a disjunct distribution between eastern Asia and western North America. Homocodon is endemic to southwestern China and was previously placed in the western North American genus Heterocodon. Our phylogenetic analysis using four plastid markers ( matK, atpB, rbcL and trnL-F) suggests the polyphyly of Peracarpeae. Homocodon is sister to a clade consisting of the eastern Asian Adenophora, Hanabusaya and species of Campanula from the Mediterranean region and North America, rather than forming a clade with Heterocodon. Homocodon and its Eurasia relatives are estimated to have diverged in the early Miocene (16.84 mya, 95% HPD 13.35-21.45 mya). The eastern Asian Peracarpa constitutes a clade with the North American Heterocodon, Githopsis and three species of Campanula, supporting a disjunction between eastern Asia and North America in Campanulaceae. The Asian-North American disjunct lineages diverged in the early Miocene (16.17 mya, 95% HPD 13.12-20.9 mya). The biogeographic analyses suggest that Homocodon may be a relict of an early radiation in eastern Asia, and that Peracarpa and its closest North American relatives most likely originated from a Eurasian ancestor. Abstract: Buddleja davidii is a widespread shrub in Asia while B. yunnanensis is a narrowly endemic species limited to Yunnan Province, China. To explore whether floral volatiles, morphological characters of flower and seed and breeding system are correlated with their distributions, we measured length and width of corolla, trichome density at corolla throat, level of stigma/anthers relationship, seed size and weight. The results indicated that these characteristics were significantly different between the two species (P <0.01). Bagging experiments revealed that B. davidii is a self-incompatible plant while B. yunnanensis is self-compatible. Thick trichome density at the corolla throat may reduce out-crossing in B. yunnanensis. Autogamy plays an important role in fruit production of this species while B. davidii requires pollinators for fruiting. Scents were collected using dynamic headspace adsorption method and identified with coupled gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. In total, 27 floral scent compounds were identified. The volatile composition in the two species was very different. We attempted to determine if these features, associated with commonness and with rarity found in these two taxa, could also help to explain the distribution pattern of other species of the genus Buddleja. • We present the most comprehensive phylogeny of Urticaceae tribe Urticeae to date, in terms of both taxon and character sampling. • Our results suggest that pre-Miocene boreotropical dispersal/vicariance explains the biogeographic distributions of several major clades of Urticeae. • In contrast, more recent long-distance dispersals were most likely responsible for other biogeographical disjunctions in Urticeae. • The fleshy fruits and winged diaspores of several taxa in the tribe would enable such long-distance events. The tribe Urticeae (Urticaceae), popularly known as Nettles, include 12 genera and ca. 200 species, constituting a diverse and cosmopolitan plant clade centered in tropical Asia, Africa, and South America. The global distribution of this clade makes it an excellent group to test hypotheses regarding the processes underlying tropical intercontinental disjunctions. More specifically, it allows us to test whether current distribution patterns resulted from recent transoceanic long-distance dispersal or ancient vicariance after boreotropical migration. We reconstructed the phylogeny of Nettles with the nuclear ITS and four plastid DNA regions (rbcL , trnL-F , matK and rpl14-rpl36) using Bayesian inference and maximum parsimony approaches. We inferred divergence times using a Bayesian uncorrelated lognormal relaxed molecular clock model and ancestral areas using the divergence-extinction-cladogenesis (DEC) model. Our results indicate a tropical Asian origin for the tribe during the late Paleocene. Migration events to Eurasia, South America and Africa occurred mainly during the Oligocene and Miocene. However, several long-distance dispersal events, including dispersals from Asia to Hawaii or Australasia, were inferred to have occurred from the Miocene onwards. • Euclidieae was monophyletic and could be divided into five clades. • Early Miocene origin and subsequent diversification of Euclidieae. • Multiple ndh genes loss and pseudogenization in Euclidieae species. Euclidieae, a morphologically diverse tribe in the family Brassicaceae (Cruciferae), consists of 29 genera and more than 150 species distributed mainly in Asia. Prior phylogenetic analyses on Euclidieae are inadequate. In this study, sequence data from the plastid genome and nuclear ribosomal DNA of 72 species in 27 genera of Euclidieae were used to infer the inter- and intra-generic relationships within. The well-resolved and strongly supported plastome phylogenies revealed that Euclidieae could be divided into five clades. Both Cymatocarpus and Neotorularia are polyphyletic in nuclear and plastome phylogenies. Besides, the conflicts of systematic positions of three species of Braya and two species of Solms-laubachia s.l. indicated that hybridization and or introgression might have happened during the evolutionary history of the tribe. Results from divergence-time analyses suggested an early Miocene origin of Euclidieae, and it probably originated from the Central Asia, Pamir Plateau and West Himalaya. The newly defined fern genus Leptochilus contains about 50 species occurring in subtropical to tropical Asia and adjacent Pacific islands. The circumscription and phylogeny of the genus have been ambiguous and its species had been included in various genera such as Colysis, Dendroglossa, Kontumia, Microsorum, and Paraleptochilus. Previous molecular studies sampled only 2-4 molecular markers and 2-16 accessions of Leptochilus. In the present study, DNA sequences of six plastid markers of 105 accessions representing ca. 40 species of Leptochilus, including types of Colysis, Kontumia, Leptochilus, and Paraleptochilus, 39 species of six non-Leptochilus genera of Microsoroideae, and one species of Pyrrosia, are used to infer a phylogeny. Our major results include: (1) Leptochilus is monophyletic and resolved as nested within the microsoroid ferns, but its relationships with other members of Microsoroideae are not well resolved; (2) Six well-supported major clades in Leptochilus are recognized, differing from one another in molecular, morphological, and geographical features; (3) Species related to L. macrophyllus representing earliest split in Leptochilus are identified; (4) The inclusion of Microsorum pteropus in Leptochilus is confirmed, whereas M. insigne is closely related to Leptochilus but not resolved as a member of the genus; (5) The species number of the genus is likely to double the most recent estimate following our study, and quite a few cryptic species should be recognized; and (6) A basal grade formed by three major clades is recovered and they are composed of species almost exclusively distributed at lower latitudes (the Malay Archipelago), whereas the shallow-level clades contain species distributed at mainly higher latitudes, suggesting that Leptochilus might have evolved at lower latitudes and progressively dispersed to and colonized higher latitudes., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) is an important center of origin and diversification for many northern temperate plants. The hypothesis "out-of-QTP" suggests that the majority of northern temperate plants have originated and dispersed from the QTP and adjacent regions. An interesting question is whether the biogeographic history of the platycodonoids (Campanulaceae), a group mainly distributed in the QTP and adjacent regions, coincides with the hypothesis "out-of-QTP"? Furthermore, how have the diagnostic characters of the platycodonoids evolved? In the present study, all 10 genera of the platycodonoids were sampled for molecular phylogeny and dating analyses, and ancestral states of distribution and characters were reconstructed. The results do not support the platycodonoids as an "out-of-QTP" group, but instead they might have descended from Tethyan ancestors. The dispersal and diversification of the platycodonoids in Asia might have been driven by the uplift of the QTP. The present study highlights the importance of the Tethyan Tertiary flora for the origin of the Sino-Himalayan flora and the influence of the uplift of QTP on diversification of northern temperate plants. Anaphalis is the largest Asian genus in the tribe Gnaphalieae (Asteraceae) and has its greatest species diversity in the eastern Himalayas. The nuclear internal and external transcribed spacers were sequenced for Anaphalis species, with an emphasis on the eastern Himalayan taxa to examine the monophyly and construct the phylogenetic relationships of and within the genus. The results suggest that all species of Anaphalis are nested with Helichrysum, showing a close relationship with a Mediterranean-Asian group of Helichrysum. Although the monophyly of Anaphalis is only weakly supported, two clades within the genus are well recognized, each consisting of two subgroups. The inferred phylogenetic relationships within Anaphalis correspond to the shape of leaf base, rather than the morphology of the capitula and phyllaries that are usually used for species delimitation and classification in the genus. All four subgroups of Anaphalis are common and diversified in the eastern Himalayas with multiple dispersals out of this region. The sole North American species of Anaphalis is best hypothesized to be the result of long-distance dispersal or overland migration via Bering land bridge from Asia. Our analyses suggest that the extant distribution of Anaphalis has most likely resulted one radiation into the eastern Himalayas followed by repeated independent dispersals and/or radiations mostly into eastern Asia but also into the western Himalayas, North America, and southeast Asia.
