The High Asia Refined analysis (HAR) is a regional atmospheric data set generated by dynamical downscaling of the Final operational global analysis (FNL) using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. It has been successfully and widely utilized. A new version (HAR v2) with longer temporal coverage and extended domains is currently under development. ERA5 reanalysis data is used as forcing data. This study aims to find the optimal set‐up for the production of the HAR v2 to provide similar or even better accuracy as the HAR. First, we conducted a sensitivity study, in which different cumulus, microphysics, planetary boundary layer, and land surface model schemes were compared and validated against in situ observations. The technique for order preference by similarity to the ideal solution (TOPSIS) method was applied to identify the best schemes. Snow depth in ERA5 is overestimated in High Mountain Asia (HMA) and causes a cold bias in the WRF output. Therefore, we used Japanese 55‐year Reanalysis (JRA‐55) to correct snow depth initialized from ERA5 based on the linear scaling approach. After applying the best schemes identified by the TOPSIS method and correcting the initial snow depth, the model performance improves. Finally, we applied the improved set‐up for the HAR v2 and computed a one‐year run for 2011. Compared to the HAR, the HAR v2 has a better representation of air temperature at 2 m. It produces slightly higher precipitation amounts, but the spatial distribution of seasonal mean precipitation is closer to observations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

China has been delaying the plan of achieving capital account convertibility since the Asian financial crisis, although restrictions on capital flows have been reduced steadily, confirmed by the falling Capital Account Control Index. Current restrictions exist mainly for cross-border portfolio investment, debt financing and outward direct investment (ODI). Effectiveness of these restrictions, however, has been declining over time. While capital controls probably helped support domestic financial stability in the past, their potential costs are rising quickly, evidenced by losing independence of the monetary policy. China already possesses a range of favorable conditions for capital account liberalization, including stable macroeconomic situation, healthy fiscal and financial systems, and strong external accounts. Some of these conditions may be reversed in the coming years. Therefore, China should probably try to achieve basic capital account convertibility within the next three to five years. This requires, among others, establishment of market-based interest rates and exchange rates. The authorities could probably remove restrictions on debt financing and ODI quickly. For the more volatile portfolio investment, they could retain the existing qualified foreign institutional investor and qualified domestic institutional investor schemes, with significantly increased quotas but substantially reduced restrictions during the transition period. Ice and sediment cores, peat bogs and tree rings are useful proxy records for reconstructing historical air pollution events. However, these indirect measurements are subject to interferences caused by environmental perturbations including global climate change. Therefore, using multiple proxy records has advantages in constraining the analytical findings. In this study, we utilized the chronological record of atmospheric deposition preserved in vegetation succession ecosystems in the deglaciated region for reconstructing historical pollution events. The rate of Cd accumulation in the forest chronosequence zone was investigated in a deglaciated area of the Tibetan Plateau. The results obtained through this novel approach are consistent with the variations of Cd concentration recorded in tree-ring, showing a 4-7 times increase of atmospheric Cd deposition from the 1890s to the early 1970s followed by a decrease from the mid-1970s-2000s. The Cd pollution record indicates that elevated atmospheric Cd release occurred in regions of Southwest China and South Asia due to the rapid industrial development until 1970 followed by coordinated efforts in controlling air emissions after mid-1970s., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Domestication and subsequent selective pressures have produced a large variety of pig coat colors in different regions and breeds. The melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) gene plays a crucial role in determining coat color of mammals. Here, we investigated genetic diversity and selection at the coding region of the porcine melanocortin receptor 1 (MC1R) in Tibetan pigs and Landrace pigs. By contrast, genetic variability was much lower in Landrace pigs than in Tibetan pigs. Meanwhile, haplotype analysis showed that Tibetan pigs possessed shared haplotypes, suggesting a possibility of recent introgression event by way of crossbreeding with neighboring domestic pigs or shared ancestral polymorphism. Additionally, we detected positive selection at the MC1R in both Tibetan pigs and Landrace pigs through the dN/dS analysis. These findings suggested that novel phenotypic change (dark coat color) caused by novel mutations may help Tibetan pigs against intensive solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation and camouflage in wild environment, whereas white coat color in Landrace were intentionally selected by human after domestication. Furthermore, both the phylogenetic analysis and the network analysis provided clues that MC1R in Asian and European wild boars may have initially experienced different selective pressures, and MC1R alleles diversified in modern domesticated pigs., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V.
