Gravitational‐wave high‐energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All‐sky Monitor (GECAM) is a space‐borne instrument dedicated to monitoring high‐energy transients, including Terrestrial Gamma‐ray Flashes (TGFs) and Terrestrial Electron Beams (TEBs). We implemented a TGF/TEB search algorithm for GECAM, with which 147 bright TGFs, 2 typical TEBs and 2 special TEB‐like events are identified during an effective observation time of ∼9 months. We show that, with gamma‐ray and charged particle detectors, GECAM can effectively identify and distinguish TGFs and TEBs, and measure their temporal and spectral properties in detail. A very high TGF‐lightning association rate of ∼80% is obtained between GECAM and GLD360 in east Asia region. Plain Language Summary: Terrestrial gamma‐ray flashes (TGFs) and Terrestrial Electron Beams (TEBs) represent the most energetic radioactive phenomena in the atmosphere of the Earth. They reflect a natural particle accelerator that can boost electrons up to at least several tens of mega electron volts and produce gamma‐ray radiation. With novel detection technologies, Gravitational‐wave high‐energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All‐sky Monitor (GECAM) is a new powerful instrument to observe TGFs and TEBs, as well as study their properties. For example, it is difficult for most space‐borne high‐energy instruments to distinguish between TGFs and TEBs. However, we show here that, with the joint observation of gamma‐ray and charged particle detectors, GECAM can effectively identify TGFs and TEBs. GECAM can also reveal their fine features in the light curves and spectra. The brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) is a resurgent pest of rice crops throughout Asia. We recently discovered that octopamine (OA) and OA2B2 operate in the BPH mating system, where it mediates a wide range of molecular, physiological and behavioural changes. Here, we report on outcomes of experiments designed to test the hypothesis that OA/OA2B2 signalling mediates responses to three abiotic stressors, starvation, high temperature (37 °C), and induced oxidative stress. We found per os RNAi‐mediated OA2B2 silencing led to significantly decreased survival, measured in days, following exposure to each of these stressors. We selected a biologically costly process, reproductive biology, as a biotic stressor. Silencing of OA2B2 led to decreased total protein content in ovaries and fat bodies, downregulated expression of vitellogenin (Vg) and Vg receptor (VgR), inhibited fat body Vg protein synthesis, shortened the oviposition period, prolonged the preoviposition period, reduced the number of laid eggs, body weight and female longevity. In addition, the silencing treatments also led to inhibited ovarian development, and ovarian Vg uptake, reduced numbers of egg masses and offspring and lower hatching rates and population growth index. Aims Diabetic kidney disease independently predicts cardiovascular disease and premature death. We examined the burden of chronic kidney disease ( CKD, defined as an estimated GFR < 60 ml/min/1.73 m2) and quality of care in a cross-sectional survey of adults (age ≥ 18 years) with Type 2 diabetes across Asia. Methods The Joint Asia Diabetes Evaluation programme is a disease-management programme implemented using an electronic portal that systematically captures clinical characteristics of all patients enrolled. Between July 2007 and December 2012, data on 28 110 consecutively enrolled patients (China: 3415, Hong Kong: 15 196, India: 3714, Korea: 1651, Philippines: 3364, Vietnam: 692, Taiwan: 78) were analysed. Results In this survey, 15.9% of patients had CKD, 25.0% had microalbuminuria and 12.5% had macroalbuminuria. Patients with CKD were less likely to achieve HbA1c < 53 mmol/mol (7.0%) (36.0% vs. 42.3%) and blood pressure < 130/80 mmHg (20.8% vs. 35.3%), and were more likely to have retinopathy (26.2% vs. 8.7%), sensory neuropathy (29.0% vs. 7.7%), cardiovascular disease (26.6% vs. 8.7%) and self-reported hypoglycaemia (18.9% vs. 8.2%). Despite high frequencies of albuminuria (74.8%) and dyslipidaemia (93.0%) among CKD patients, only 49.0% were using renin-angiotensin system inhibitors and 53.6% were on statins. On logistic regression, old age, male gender, tobacco use, long disease duration, high HbA1c, blood pressure and BMI, and low LDL cholesterol were independently associated with CKD (all P < 0.05). Conclusions The poor control of risk factors, suboptimal use of organ-protective drugs and high frequencies of hypoglycaemia highlight major treatment gaps in patients with diabetic kidney disease in Asia. Chaenomeles spp. (quince) are important as medical and food plants in East Asia. Their fruit have a strong characteristic aroma, but their phytochemical compositions are not yet fully understood. The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in eight new hybrid varieties from crosses between cultivars of C. X superba and C. speciosa were analysed by solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME) and GC-MS. Forty-eight VOCs were identified, with nine compounds being found in all eight varieties. Multivariate data analysis showed that esters and ketones were the main contributors to the distinct aroma of the fruit. Principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis allowed the elucidation of differences and similarities among the new hybrid varieties. The results obtained showed that these new hybrid varieties of Chaenomeles had different VOC profiles, which may be valuable for industrial applications such as flavour and fragrance agents. A global-scale three dimensional atmospheric transport and chemistry model was applied to simulate transpacific transport of Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) emitted from Asia. The model results were compared with observations at six monitoring sites. The annual mean and seasonal variation of transport patterns and the contributions of different Asian source regions to transpacific transport flux were investigated. The episodic nature of transpacific transport was also systematically explored. Interannual variability of transpacific transport of BaP was also assessed during the period of 1948-2007. Results showed that strong enhancements of modeled BaP occurred in an area bounded by 70-80° E and 100-120° E. Air containing these elevated BaP concentrations was then delivered eastward by westerly winds. When approaching the West Coast of North America, the descending atmospheric motion carried BaP-laden air into the lower atmosphere. The transpacific transport flux was 1.6 times higher in the winter than in the summer. East Asian emission dominates the transpacific transport flux with a contribution of about 97 %. Near ground concentration of BaP induced by Asian sources in North America varied between 1-20 pg m-3. A case study for observation at Cheeka Peak Observatory during March 2002-May 2002 reveals the importance of warm conveyor belt for transpacific transport. The number of days with transpacific transport flux with a factor of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 larger than the running mean were 9.4 %, 0.72 %, 0.06% and 0.01 %, respectively, implying a mild contribution of episodic transport to the long-term mean transport flux. Significant interannual fluctuation of transpacific transport of BaP was found, including a general decreasing trend during 1948-2007, and especially after the 1970s. A Bayesian phylogenetic analysis of eight separate gene segments indicated A/Swine/Shandong/2/2003 (H5N1), A/Swine/Shandong/na/2003 (H9N2), A/Swine/Shandong/nb/2003 (H9N2) and A/Swine/Shandong/nc/2005 (H9N2) probably represent two multiple reassortant lineages, that had not been described before, with genes coming from H5N1, H9N2 and other lineages from poultry in Asia. Amino acid motifs within the haemagglutinin sequence of A/Swine/Shandong/nb/2003 suggested it may be able to infect people, whereas the sequences of the other three isolates suggested they would not have had that capability. Our analysis emphasizes the need for a comprehensive study of the interactions between H5N1 and H9N2 viruses in Asia that includes sequencing and phylogenetic investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gastric cancer in adolescents and young adults (GCAYA) has been ignored by both patients and physicians. We examined the disease burden of GCAYA and its secular trends in incidence and mortality. A comprehensive analysis of the global burden of GCAYA based on data provided by GLOBOCAN 2020. Global, regional, sex, and country-specific data of the incidence and mortality of GCAYA were extracted from the GLOBOCAN, the Cancer in Five Continents Plus, and the World Health Organization mortality database, respectively. The associations between the Human Development Index (HDI) and GCAYA burden were also evaluated by Pearson correlation analysis. The global incidence of GCAYA was 0.79 per 100,000, and the corresponding mortality was 0.45 per 100,000 in 2020. The mortality-to-incidence ratio (MIR) was lower in AYA (0.61) than in patients aged 40–64 years (0.65) and patients aged 65 years and older (0.75). The age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR) and age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR) were 0.84 and 0.53 per 100,000, respectively, in women, compared with 0.74 and 0.45 per 100,000, respectively, in men. The majority of new cases (17,934) and deaths (10,360) were estimated to occur in Asia. There has a significant negative correlation between the MIR of GCAYA and HDI level (R2 = 0.2707, P < 0.0001). There was a decreasing trend of incidence and mortality in most countries. The MIR of GCAYA is lower than that among older patients and exhibit a positive association with socio-economic status. For adopting recently introduced hypertension phenotypes categorized using office and out of office blood pressure (BP) for the diagnosis of hypertension and antihypertension drug therapy, it is mandatory to define the corresponding out of office BP with the specific target BP recommended by the major guidelines. Such conditions include white-coat hypertension (WCH), masked hypertension (MH), white-coat uncontrolled hypertension (WUCH), and masked uncontrolled hypertension (MUCH). Here, the authors review the relevant literature and discuss the related issue to facilitate the use of corresponding BPs for proper diagnosis of WCH, MH, WUCH, and MUCH in the setting of standard target BP as well as intensive target BP. The methodology of deriving the corresponding BP has evolved from statistical methods such as standard deviation, percentile value, and regression to an outcome-based approach using pooled international cohort study data and comparative analysis in randomized clinical trials for target BPs such as the SPRINT and STEP studies. Corresponding BPs to 140/90 and 130/80 mm Hg in office BP is important for safe and strict achievement of intensive BP targets. The corresponding home, daytime, and 24-h BPs to 130/80 mm Hg in office BP are 130/80, 130/80, and 125/75 mm Hg, respectively. However, researchers have found some discrepancies among the home corresponding BPs. As tentative criterion for de-escalation of antihypertensive therapy as shown in European guidelines was 120 mm Hg in office BP, corresponding home, daytime, and 24-h systolic BPs to 120 mm Hg in office systolic BP are 120, 120, and 115 mm Hg, respectively., (© 2023 The Authors. Background: Sporotrichosis is a chronic granulomatous infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissue that can affect any organ through lymphatic spread. The prevalence of sporotrichosis infections is increasing and its treatment is challenging as there are no unified and standard diagnostic techniques or antifungal medications. Controlling further spread requires a rapid diagnosis. Assessment of clinical symptoms, histological analysis, serological testing, and pathogen culture are all necessary for the diagnosis of sporotrichosis. However, these procedures are unable to identify the species. The development of safe, reliable, and species-specific diagnostic techniques is essential., Objective: To establish and evaluate a new quantitative real-time PCR assay for the rapid diagnosis of sporotrichosis and to identify relevant species., Methods: Polymorphisms in calmodulin (CAL) gene sequences and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) were used in a quantitative real-time PCR assay to identify S. globosa, S. schenckii, and non-target species., Results: The quantitative real-time PCR assay had 100% sensitivity and specificity. The limit of detection was 6 fg/µl. Thirty-four clinical specimens were verified to be infected with S. globosa with a 100% positive detection rate., Conclusions: The quantitative PCR technique developed in this study is a quick, accurate, and targeted method of identifying S. globosa based on polymorphisms in CAL sequences and ITS. Background: The incidence of malignant tumors has increased in patients with non-paraneoplastic pemphigus, although there has been no systematic analysis of global epidemiology., Objective: To explore the epidemiology of various types of non-paraneoplastic pemphigus associated with malignant tumors., Methods: Five databases from establishment through October 20, 2023, were searched. STATA SE 17 was used for the data analysis. Subgroup, meta-regression, and sensitivity analyses were used to evaluate the heterogeneity of pooled studies., Results: A total of 6679 participants were included in our meta-analysis from 16 studies. The aggregated prevalence of tumors in patients diagnosed with pemphigus was 8%. The prevalence was 7% in patients with pemphigus vulgaris, 10% in those with pemphigus foliaceus, and 12% in individuals diagnosed with other types of pemphigus. The prevalence was 8% in Asia, 11% in Europe, and 8% in North America. From a country-specific perspective, patients with pemphigus from Israel, Greece, and Germany exhibited a higher prevalence of tumors at 11%. Furthermore, when categorized by the duration of the study period, the highest prevalence was observed in studies spanning 10 to 20 years, at 11%., Conclusion: These findings demonstrate the incidence and prevalence of malignant tumors in patients with non-paraneoplastic pemphigus, which may achieve early detection and intervention, and then reduce mortality rates., (© 2024. Invasive species may occupy quite different environments in their invaded areas to native ones, which may intensively interfere with predicting potential distribution through ecological niche modeling (ENM). Here, we take the tomato leafminer Tuta absoluta Meyrick (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), a tomato pest, as an example to investigate this topic. We analyzed niche expansion, stability, unfilling, and Schoener's D by principal component analysis (PCA) ordination method to examine its realized niche shifts and to explore how ENM approaches are affected by niche shifts. We used 5 datasets: Asian, African, European, South American, and global occurrence records in this study. Results showed that high niche unfilling for the species' invaded areas in Asia (20%), Africa (12%), and Europe (37%), possibly due to T. absoluta being in the early stages of invasion. High niche expansion was observed in Asia (38%) and Europe (19%), implying that some European and Asian populations had reached new climatic areas. African niche had the most niche stability (94%) and was equivalent to the native one in climate space (PCA ordination method), but the n-dimensional climate space framework showed that they were different. When projecting the native model to Asia and Europe, the native model performed poorly, implying that the niche shifts affected the transferability of the native model. ENM based on global data outperformed than other models, and our results suggested that T. absoluta has a large potential distribution in Asia, Mexico, South Europe, the United States, and Australia. Objectives: To describe the epidemiological time trends and gender, age and regional differences of gastric cancer in Asia during 1990-2019, and to analyze the association between the human development index (HDI) and the statistical indicators of the burden of disease., Methods: Describing trends in age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR) and age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) in Asia from 1990 to 2019 based on GBD-reported population-based surveillance of gastric cancer in Asia. Obtained ASIR, ASMR, and mortality to incidence ratios (MIR) for gastric cancer in different countries in 2019, with association analysis by Kruskal-Wallis nonparametric test., Results: The annual percentage change in ASIR and ASMR in Asia from 1990 to 2019 was - 1.20% and - 1.91%. Male gastric cancer patients have higher ASIR and ASMR than female gastric cancer patients. Decreasing trends in ASIR and ASMR for the total population in five Asian regions. From 1990 to 2019, the average annual change in ASMR was - 2.45%, - 1.43%, - 0.53%, - 0.62%, and - 0.27% for Central Asia, East Asia, high-income Asia-Pacific, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, respectively (p < 0.05). Both incidence and mortality were concentrated in the age groups of 85-89 and 89-94 years. Classifying Asian countries into different levels of HDI, only MIR was associated with HDI levels., Conclusion: ASIR and ASMR of gastric cancer in the total population, different regions, and countries in Asia from 1990 to 2019 showed an overall decreasing trend. The MIR index is suggestive of survival rates and the role of cancer care in individual countries. Pomacea canaliculata, an invasive species native to South America, is recognized for its broad geographic distribution and adaptability to a variety of ecological conditions. The details concerning the evolution and adaptation of P. canaliculate remain unclear due to a lack of whole-genome resequencing data. We examined 173 P. canaliculata genomes representing 17 geographic populations in East and Southeast Asia. Interestingly, P. canaliculata showed a higher level of genetic diversity than other mollusks, and our analysis suggested that the dispersal of P. canaliculata could have been driven by climate changes and human activities. Notably, we identified a set of genes associated with low temperature adaptation, including Csde1, a cold shock protein coding gene. Further RNA sequencing analysis and reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction experiments demonstrated the gene's dynamic pattern and biological functions during cold exposure. Moreover, both positive selection and balancing selection are likely to have contributed to the rapid environmental adaptation of P. canaliculata populations. In particular, genes associated with energy metabolism and stress response were undergoing positive selection, while a large number of immune-related genes showed strong signatures of balancing selection. Aims: To systematically assess the worldwide prevalence of nurse turnover and discuss its influencing factors., Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis., Methods: PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CINAHL, China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database, Wanfang Database were searched from their commencement date to 25 March 2021. Two authors independently reviewed the studies. Stata 15.0 software package was used for statistical analysis, with estimates of data on the prevalence of nurse turnover using a random-effects model. This review was performed according to the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) manual for evidence synthesis and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) Statement. PROSPERO Registration Number:CRD42020208873., Results: A total of 15 studies covering 852,317 nurses were included in the analyses. The pooled prevalence of nurse turnover was 18% (95% CI: 11% to 26%, I 2  = 99.86%, p < 0.0001). Geographic regions (Asia), published years (2001 to 2010) and respondents (new nurses) were significantly associated with the prevalence of nurse turnover. Additionally, several risk factors for turnover were identified in the literature, involving demographic factors (young, single, have short working hours, lower level of education and male nurses), organizational factors (small-scale hospitals, low salary levels, larger workload, developed region and absence of labour union), satisfaction (dissatisfaction with organization, profession, job and competence)., (© 2024 The Authors. Monkeypox (mpox), a viral zoonotic disease, is spreading worldwide. However, evidence that informs prevention and control strategies in the Asia Pacific Region is very limited. Our study aims to investigate the experiences of mpox patients from infection to treatment to provide scientific basis for the prevention and control. A multicenter qualitative design was used. A total of 15 mpox patients were recruited between July 6 and July 25, 2023, from six cities in China. Semistructured interviews were conducted by telephone and analyzed using the thematic analysis. The interview was divided into two sections: patients' experiences (prediagnosis experience, treatment-seeking experience, and quarantine experience) and advice. Prediagnosis experience was summarized into three themes: symptoms, possible routes of infection, and knowledge of mpox. Treatment-seeking experience was summarized into three themes: time of visit to hospital, diagnostic difficulties, and attitude toward diagnosis. Quarantine experience was summarized into three themes: body and mind reactions, reluctance to self-disclose infection status, and factors facilitating recovery. Themes identified from patients' advice were as follows: (1) Increase in testing channels and methods, (2) Development and introduction of vaccines, (3) Adjustment of quarantine program, (4) Improvement of treatment measures, and (5) Improvement of publicity and education. To effectively curb the mpox epidemic, structured measures are urgently needed to address the mpox-related stigma and discrimination. Targeted health education should be provided to MSM, focusing on the prevention, detection, and treatment services. Hospitals should enhance the training of clinicians in key departments including infectious disease and dermatology, to improve diagnostic capability and sensitivity. Recent innovations in digital technology have enabled the simultaneous accumulation, and the linking and analysis of time-series big data relating to several factors that influence blood pressure (BP), including biological indicators, physical activity, and environmental information. Various approaches can be used to monitor BP: in the office/clinic; at home; 24-h ambulatory recording; or with wearable and cuffless devices. Of these, home BP monitoring is a reliable and convenient method, and is recommended for hypertension management by current national and international guidelines. This recommendation is based on evidence showing that home BP is an important predictor of cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and kidney disease in patients with hypertension. In addition, lifetime personalized health record (PHR)-based home BP with telemonitoring combined with co-interventions has been shown to lower BP more effectively than the traditional approach based on office BP. Thus, home BP represents a key metric for personalized anticipation medicine, from digital healthcare to digital medicine. Objectives: Our aim was to analyze the results of published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on vitamin D supplementation for psoriasis in order to explore its effectiveness and safety., Patients and Methods: As of July 7 2023, we conducted a systematic literature search in PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, and Web of Science Core Collection databases. The study outcomes included change values in Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) (at 3 months, 6 months, and end of follow-up)/Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI)/Psoriasis disability index (PDI)/C-reactive protein (CRP), and adverse events., Results: 333 patients from 4 studies were evaluated. Pooled analyses showed no significant effect of DLQI/PDI/CRP change value (P > 0.05) or PASI change value (3 months, end of follow-up; P > 0.05). Sensitivity analyses and statistical tests did not support the results of the PASI change values (6 months, P = 0.05). However, the results of subgroup analyses should not be ignored(supplementation with vitamin D2 or Asia would be more effective; P = 0.03). There were no serious adverse effects, and only a few individuals experienced nausea., Conclusions: The efficacy and safety of vitamin D supplementation in the treatment of psoriasis remains unremarkable. Background: Bladder cancer (BCa) is one of the most common urological malignancies worldwide. This study examines the global epidemiological profile of BCa incidence and mortality in 2020 and the projected burden to 2040., Methods: The estimated number of BCa cases and deaths were extracted from the GLOBOCAN 2020 database. Age-standardised incidence rates (ASIRs) and age-standardised mortality rates (ASMRs) were calculated using the world standard. The predicted BCa incidence and mortality in 2040 was calculated based on demographic projections., Results: Globally, approximately 573 000 new BCa cases and 213 000 deaths occurred in 2020, corresponding to ASIRs and ASMRs of 5.6 and 1.9 per 100 000, respectively. The incidence and mortality rates were approximately 4-fold higher in men (9.5 and 3.3 per 100 000, respectively) than women (2.4 and 0.9, respectively). Across world regions, incidence rates varied at least 12-fold among men and 8-fold among women, with the highest ASIRs for both men and women detected in Southern Europe (26.5 and 5.8 per 100 000, respectively) and Western Europe (21.5 and 5.8, respectively) and the lowest in Middle Africa (2.2) in men and South-Central Asia (0.7) in women. The highest ASMRs for both men and women were found in Northern Africa (9.2 and 1.8 per 100 000, respectively). By 2040, the annual number of new BCa cases and deaths will increase to 991 000 (72.8% increase from 2020) and 397 000 (86.6% increase), respectively., Conclusions: Geographical distributions of BCa incidence and mortality uncovered higher risk of BCa incidence in Southern and Western European populations and higher risk of mortality in Northern African populations. The Asian monsoon provides the freshwater that a large population in Asia depends on, but how anthropogenic climate warming may alter this key water source remains unclear. This is partly due to the prevailing point-wise assessment of climate projections, even though climate change patterns are inherently organized by dynamics intrinsic to the climate system. Here, we assess the future changes in the East Asian summer monsoon precipitation by projecting the precipitation from several large ensemble simulations and CMIP6 simulations onto the two leading dynamical modes of internal variability. The result shows a remarkable agreement among the ensembles on the increasing trends and the increasing daily variability in both dynamical modes, with the projection pattern emerging as early as the late 2030 s. Background: Helicobacter pylori causes large burden of gastric cancer (GC) in Asia. We aimed to comprehensively quantify the burden of GC attributable to H. pylori infection in Asia., Methods: We searched related articles from January 1998 to December 2020 to obtain the prevalence and relative risks (or odds ratio) of GC associated with H. pylori in Asia. The burden of GC attributable to H. pylori infection was quantified by Population Attributable Fraction (PAF) and Disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs)., Results: We quantified the burden of GC attributable to H. pylori infection with 415.6 thousand DALYs and 38.03% PAF through the five included Asian countries in 2019. The study found that the burden had obvious regional differences. The DALYs ranged from 298.9 thousand in China to 1.9 thousand in Malaysia, and the PAFs were between 58.00% in Japan and 30.89% in China. The average prevalence of H. pylori in the included general population was estimated to be 56.29%., Conclusions: Helicobacter pylori poses a huge disease burden of GC to the population, and its eradication should receive attention, especially in the countries with high incidence of and mortality due to GC., (© The Author(s) 2022. Quantifying climate change- and socioeconomic development-induced changes in the 'water tower' function is a major challenge in high-mountain Asia (HMA), especially when considering the affected downstream areas. This study applies historical monsoon-influenced rainfall patterns and the water stress index to quantify the climate change- and socioeconomic growth-induced changes in the 'Asian water tower' function through the middle of the 21st century by nonparametric empirical quantile mapping and empirical orthogonal function analysis. Water pressures are predicted to intensify in 25.84 ± 7.87 % of 'water tower' downstream watersheds. Enhancements in the 'Asian water tower' function are vulnerable to help stop the deterioration of downstream water pressure while increasing the water sufficiency probability by 7.97 ± 15.52 %. Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) is one of the main pathogens causing hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) outbreaks in Asian children under 5 years of age. In severe cases, it can cause neurological complications and be life-threatening. In this study, 200 newly sequenced EV-A71 whole-genome sequences were combined with 772 EV-A71 sequences from GenBank for large-scale analysis to investigate global EV-A71 epidemiology, phylogeny, and Bayesian phylodynamic characteristics. Based on the phylogenetic analysis of the EV-A71 3D pol region, six new evolutionary lineages (lineages B, J, K, O, P, and Q) were found in this study, and the number of evolutionary lineages was expanded from 11 to 17. Temporal dynamics and recombination breakpoint analyses based on genotype C revealed that recombination of nonstructural protein-coding regions, including 3D pol , is an important reason for the emergence of new lineages. The EV-A71 epidemic in the Asia-Pacific region is complex, and phylogeographic analysis found that Vietnam played a key role in the spread of subgenotypes B5 and C4. The origin of EV-A71 subgenotype C4 in China is East China, which is closely related to the prevalence of subgenotype C4 in the south and throughout China. Selection pressure analysis revealed that, in addition to VP1 amino acid residues VP1-98 and VP1-145, which are associated with EV-A71 pathogenicity, amino acid residues VP1-184 and VP1-249 were also positively selected, and their functions still need to be determined by biology and immunology. This study aimed to provide a solid theoretical basis for EV-A71-related disease surveillance and prevention, antiviral research, and vaccine development through a comprehensive analysis. IMPORTANCE EV-A71 is one of the most important pathogens causing HFMD outbreaks; however, large-scale studies of EV-A71 genomic epidemiology are currently lacking. In this study, 200 new EV-A71 whole-genome sequences were determined. Combining these with 772 EV-A71 whole-genome sequences in the GenBank database, the evolutionary and transmission characteristics of global and Asian EV-A71 were analyzed. Six new evolutionary lineages were identified in this study. We also found that recombination in nonstructural protein-coding regions, including 3D pol , is an important cause for the emergence of new lineages. The results provided a solid theoretical basis for EV-A71-related disease surveillance and prevention, antiviral research, and vaccine development.

More than 405 million people have contracted coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) worldwide, and mycotic infection may be related to COVID-19 development. There are a large number of reports showing that COVID-19 patients with mycotic infection have an increased risk of mortality. However, whether mycotic infection can be considered a risk factor for COVID-19 remains unknown. We searched the PubMed and Web of Science databases for studies published from inception to December 27, 2021. Pooled effect sizes were calculated according to a random-effects model or fixed-effect model, depending on heterogeneity. We also performed subgroup analyses to identify differences in mortality rates between continents and fungal species. A total of 20 articles were included in this study. Compared with the controls, patients with mycotic infection had an odds ratio (OR) of 2.69 [95% confidence interval (CI): 2.22-3.26] for mortality and an OR of 2.28 (95% CI: 1.65-3.16) for renal replacement therapy (RRT). We also conducted two subgroup analyses based on continent and fungal species, and we found that Europe and Asia had the highest ORs, while Candida was the most dangerous strain of fungi. We performed Egger's test and Begg's test to evaluate the publication bias of the included articles, and the p -value was 0.423, which indicated no significant bias. Morning hypertension is an important clinical target in the management of hypertension for perfect 24-h blood pressure (BP) control. Morning hypertension is generally categorized into two types: "morning surge" type and "sustained nocturnal and morning hypertension" type. The "morning surge" type is characterized by an exaggerated morning blood pressure surge (MBPS), and the "sustained nocturnal and morning hypertension" type with continuous hypertension from nighttime to morning (non-dipper/riser type). They can be detected by home and ambulatory blood pressure measurements (HBPM and ABPM). These two forms of morning hypertension both increase the risk of cardiovascular and renal diseases, but may occur via different pathogenic mechanisms and are associated with different conditions. Morning hypertension should be treated to achieve a morning BP level of < 135/85 mmHg, regardless of the office BP. The second target morning BP levels is < 125/75 mmHg for high-risk patients with morning hypertension and concomitant diseases. Morning hypertension is more frequently found in Asians, than in Westerners. Thus, the management of morning hypertension is especially important in Asia. In this study, a fixed-mix stochastic fractional programming (FSFP) method is developed for balancing the water-allocation conflict between upstream hydropower generation and downstream agricultural irrigation. FSFP has advantages in dealing with ratio-objective problem under uncertainty, reflecting the dynamic and stochastic characteristics over a long-term planning context, as well as analyzing interrelationships between system efficiency and violation risk of water-allocation target. Then, FSFP is firstly applied to Tuyamuyun reservoir in the lower reach of Amu Darya River basin (Central Asia), where multiple scenarios based on different hydropower-generation targets and inflow levels are examined for identifying the complex relationship between hydropower generation and crop irrigation. Major findings and managerial insights can be summarized as: (i) with the reduction of reservoir inflow, water allocation for downstream agricultural irrigation would decrease by 30.4% once the minimum demand is satisfied, and hydropower generation should be higher priority for pursuing higher marginal benefit; (ii) with the shrinking water supply and rising hydropower-generation target, cotton planting should be firstly restrained due to its high water demand and grape planting is encouraged; (iii) under extreme water scarcity (i.e., low and very-low inflow levels), low-level hydropower generation target (i.e., α = 0.45) is desired for meeting the food requirement in the study basin; (iv) for alleviating the water shortage during dry seasons, it is recommended that water storage should be conducted in autumn and winter, and water release for crop irrigation should be implemented during spring and summer. Numerous studies have indicated that there might be great differences among different populations in Europe and Asia in terms of home morning and evening blood pressure (BP). Thus, the authors performed a systematic review to determine the quantitative differences of BP measured at clinic versus at home in the morning and in the evening in Europe and Asia. PubMed, Embase, and Scopus databases were searched up to October 2021. Studies that compared clinic BP with home morning and (or) home evening BP in European and Asian populations were included. A random effect model was applied to pool the differences between clinic BP and home morning/evening BP. Thirty-five studies, for a total of 49 432 patients, were included in this meta-analysis. Mean clinic systolic blood pressure (SBP) values were significantly higher than home morning SBP values by 3.79 mmHg (95% CI, 2.77-4.80). The differences were much larger in Europe [(6.53 mmHg (95% CI, 4.10-8.97)] than in Asia [(2.70 mmHg (95% CI, 1.74-3.66)], and the region was a significant predictor for the differences. Mean clinic SBP values were also significantly higher than home evening SBP values by 6.59 mmHg (95% CI, 4.98-8.21). The differences were much smaller in Europe [5.85 mmHg (95% CI, 3.24-8.45)] than in Asia [7.13 mmHg (95% CI, 4.92-9.35)], while age and clinic SBP might contribute to it. Our findings showed that the difference between clinic and home morning SBP was much larger in European than Asian populations, whereas the difference between clinic and home evening SBP was the opposite. The use of big data leads to higher demands for hyperscale data centers (HDCs) in terms of the scale and quantity required for data storage and processing. Before the construction of an HDC, it is necessary to comprehensively analyze the economic budget according to the energy requirements and potential energy cost. We propose a global energy consumption prediction framework based on the power usage effectiveness (PUE) calculation that considers all heat sources and power consumption. The framework integrates physical models and a statistical framework that combines IT equipment energy consumption and data center energy consuming predictions. Furthermore, the framework provides a method to calculate the carbon emissions and electricity cost of the data center. Using hourly meteorological data as climate parameters, combined with a limited range of energy parameters, the annual PUE values of 60 regions were estimated, and a further analysis of the Carbon Usage Effectiveness (CUE) and electricity costs in China was conducted as an example. Based on experimental validation and an evaluation of real-time data, our framework can predict the overall energy consumption of HDCs effectively, filling a gap in HDC research in the Asia-Pacific region and providing a basis for HDC feasibility analysis.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is becoming the most important burden to health care systems in most part of the world, especially in Asia. Aiming at identifying high risk individuals and tailoring preventive treatment, many cardiovascular risk assessment tools have been established and most of them were developed in Western countries. However, these cardiovascular risk assessment tools cannot be used interchangeably without recalibration because of the different risk factor profiles (ie, greater absolute burden of hypertension and lower level of total-cholesterol in Asians and higher prevalence of metabolic disorders in South Asians) and different CVD profiles (higher ratio of stroke/coronary heart disease in Asians) between Western and Asian populations. Original risk models such as Prediction for ASCVD Risk in China (China-PAR) and Japan Arteriosclerosis Longitudinal Study (JALS) score have been developed and well validated for specific countries, while most of countries/regions in Asia are using established models. Due to higher incidence of stroke in Asians, risk factors like hypertension should weigh more in cardiovascular risk assessment comparing with Western populations, but their actual proportions should be based on CVD profiles in specific countries/regions. The Eastern Asia (EA) - North America (NA) disjunction is a well-known biogeographic pattern of the Tertiary relict flora; however, few studies have investigated the evolutionary history of this disjunction using a phylogenomic approach. Here, we used 2369 single copy nuclear genes and nearly full plastomes to reconstruct the evolutionary history of the small Tertiary relict genus Thuja, which consists of five disjunctly distributed species. The nuclear species tree strongly supported an EA clade Thuja standishii-Thuja sutchuenensis and a "disjunct clade", where western NA species T. plicata is sister to an EA-eastern NA disjunct Thuja occidentalis-Thuja koraiensis group. Our results suggested that the observed topological discordance among the gene trees as well as the cytonuclear discordance is mainly due to incomplete lineage sorting, probably facilitated by the fast diversification of Thuja around the Early Miocene and the large effective population sizes of ancestral lineages. Furthermore, approximately 20% of the T. sutchuenensis nuclear genome is derived from an unknown ancestral lineage of Thuja, which might explain the close resemblance of its cone morphology to that of an ancient fossil species. Overall, our study demonstrates that single genes may not resolve interspecific relationships for disjunct taxa, and that more reliable results will come from hundreds or thousands of loci, revealing a more complex evolutionary history. The global spatiotemporal pattern of the COPD burden attributable to ambient PM2.5 is unknown in the context of the continuing increase in exposure to ambient PM2.5. Data on COPD burden attributable to ambient PM2.5 from 1990 to 2019 were retrieved from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. Cases and age-standardized rates of COPD mortality (ASMR) and disability-adjusted life years (ASDR) were estimated by age, sex, region, and country. The estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) was calculated to quantify the secular trends of ASMR and ASDR from 1990 to 2019. Globally, the number of COPD deaths and DALYs attributable to ambient PM2.5 both increased by over 90% from 1990 to 2019, but ASMR and ASDR both slightly decreased, with EAPC of -0.58 (95% CI: -0.72, -0.44) and -0.40 (95% CI: -0.51, -0.29), respectively. Most COPD deaths and DALYs attributable to PM2.5 occurred in the middle sociodemographic index (SDI) region, but the fastest growth of ASMR and ASDR occurred in the low SDI region, with EAPCs of 2.41 (95% CI: 2.23, 2.59) and 2.34 (95% CI: 2.16, 2.52), respectively. East Asia and South Asia were the high-risk areas of COPD deaths and DALYs attributable to PM2.5, among which China and India were the countries with the heaviest burden. COPD deaths and DALYs attributable to PM2.5 mainly occurred in individuals 70-89 years old and 60-84 years old, respectively. The age-specific rates of mortality and DALYs had a rapid increase in low and low-middle SDI regions from 1990 to 2019. The ASMR or ASDR had a reverse V-shaped relationship with SDI. In summary, the ambient PM2.5-attributable COPD burden is socioeconomic- and age-dependent, and it mediates the heterogeneity of spatial and temporal distribution. Although the association between ambient particulate matter and metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been investigated, the effect of particulate matter (PM) on MetS is inconclusive. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to study the association between long-term ambient PM exposure and MetS risk. The data from five databases were extracted to analyze the association between ambient PM exposure and MetS risk. A random-effects model was performed to estimate the overall risk effect. The present systematic review and meta-analysis illustrated that an increase of 5 μg/m 3 in annual PM 2.5 or PM 10 concentration was associated with 14% or 9% increases of MetS risk, respectively (PM 2.5 , RR = 1.14, 95%CI [1.03, 1.25]; PM 10 , RR = 1.09, 95%CI [1.00, 1.19]). The population-attributable risk (PAR) was 12.28% for PM 2.5 exposure or 8.26% for PM 10 exposure, respectively. There was statistical association between PM 2.5 exposure and risk of MetS in male proportion ≥50%, Asia, related disease or medication non-adjustment subgroup as well as cohort study subgroups, respectively. The significant association between PM 10 exposure and risk of MetS was observed in male proportion ≥50% and calories intake adjustment subgroups, respectively. Sensitivity analyses showed the robustness of our results. No publication bias was detected. Guidelines on the management of hypertension have been developed by various professional bodies and institutions to primarily address the issues of diagnosis, treatment, and control in order to rationalize and improve the management of hypertension. Hypertension guidelines across the world have recently been updated following the new and controversial lower blood pressure threshold of ≥130/80 mmHg for the diagnosis of hypertension adopted by the Americans. While there are differences between the major as well as between the Asian national guidelines, there were also many similarities. This paper discusses and highlights the differences and similarities between the major international guidelines of the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association, of the European Society of Cardiology/European Society of Hypertension, and of the International Society of Hypertension and also compares them with the Asian guidelines., (© 2021 The Authors. Hypertension is an important public health issue due to its association with a number of serious diseases, including cardiovascular disease and stroke. The importance of evaluating hypertension taking into account different blood pressure (BP) profiles and BP variability (BPV) is increasingly being recognized, and is particularly relevant in Asian populations given the specific features of hypertension in the region (including greater salt sensitivity and a high rate of nocturnal hypertension). Ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) is the gold standard for diagnosing hypertension and assessing 24-hour BP and provides data on several important parameters that cannot be obtained using any other form of BP measurement. In addition, ABPM parameters provide better information on cardio- and cerebrovascular risk than office BP. ABPM should be used in all patients with elevated BP, particularly those with unstable office or home BP, or who are suspected to have white-coat or masked hypertension. ABPM is also an important part of hypertension diagnosis and monitoring in high-risk patients. ABPM needs to be performed using a validated device and good practice techniques, and has a role both in hypertension diagnosis and in monitoring the response to antihypertensive therapy to ensure strict BP control throughout the 24-hour period. Use of ABPM in clinical practice may be limited by cost and accessibility, and practical education of physicians and patients is essential. Increased heart rate is a predictor of cardiovascular disease, heart failure, and all-cause mortality. In those with high heart rates, interventions for heart rate reduction have been associated with reductions in coronary events. Asia is a diverse continent, and the prevalences of hypertension and cardiovascular disease differ among its countries. The present analysis of AsiaBP@Home study data investigated differences among resting heart rates (RHRs) in 1443 hypertensive patients from three Asian regions: East Asia (N = 595), Southeast Asia (N = 680), and South Asia (N = 168). This is the first study to investigate self-measured RHR values in different Asian countries/regions using the same validated home BP monitoring device (Omron HEM-7130-AP/HEM-7131-E). Subjects in South Asia had higher RHR values compared with the other two regions, and the regional tendency found in RHR values was different from that found in BP values. Even after adjusting for age, sex, BMI, habitual alcohol consumption, current smoking habit, shift worker, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, history of heart failure, and beta-blocker use, both office and home RHR values in South Asia were the highest among Asia (mean values ± SE of office: East Asia [E] 75.2 ± 1.5 bpm, Southeast Asia [Se] 76.7 ± 1.5 bpm, South Asia [S] 81.9 ± 1.4 bpm; home morning: [E] 69.0 ± 1.2 bpm, [Se] 72.9 ± 1.2 bpm, [S] 74.9 ± 1.1 bpm; home evening: [E] 74.6 ± 1.2 bpm, [Se] 78.3 ± 1.2 bpm, [S] 83.8 ± 1.1 bpm). Background: Compassion fatigue is described as the phenomenon of exhaustion and dysfunction in healthcare workers resulting from prolonged exposure to work-related stress and compassion stress. Oncology nurses are at high risk for compassion fatigue., Aims: Our study aims to estimate the levels, prevalence and related factors of compassion fatigue dimension in oncology nurses., Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis., Method: Ten electronic databases were conducted in the systematic review and meta-analysis. Time frame of the searches is from inception up to 31 January 2020. The research team independently conducted study selection, quality assessments, data extractions and analysis of all included studies. The means, standard deviations and prevalence of three dimensions of compassion fatigue were pooled using random-effects meta-analysis. The PRISMA guideline was used to report the systematic review and meta-analysis. In our studies, the pooled mean scores of compassion satisfaction (CS), burnout (BO) and secondary traumatic stress (STS) were 35.47 (95% CI: 33.54-37.41), 24.94 (95% CI: 23.47-26.41) and 24.48 (95% CI: 23.36-25.60), respectively; the pooled prevalence of "low" rates of CS, "high" rates of BO and STS were 20% (CI 13%-28%), 22% (CI 18%-26%) and 22% (CI 17%-28%), respectively; furthermore, geographical regions (Asia) significantly affect the prevalence of compassion fatigue among oncology nurses. The compassion fatigue variables considered were demographic (age, marital status, education background, health condition and gender), work-related (job satisfaction, income satisfaction, years of working experience, professional title, position and work environment) and other variables (social support, coping strategy, self-compassion, professional cognition and psychological training)., Conclusion: Oncology nurses were at "moderate" level of compassion satisfaction, burnout and secondary traumatic stress, and 22% of oncology nurses suffered from "high" risk of compassion fatigue. Hospital administrators should develop interventions to address compassion fatigue phenomenon, and enhance the mental health of oncology nurses and nursing care results., Relevance to Clinical Practice: Oncology unit warrants special attention, and oncology nurses are at high risk for compassion fatigue. However, the reported prevalence rates and oncology nurses with different characteristics vary considerably. Objective: Recent studies have indicated that CD47, interacting with SIRP-α, conveys "don't eat me" signal in evasion of tumor cells and serves as a potential target for cancer immunotherapy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical correlation of CD47 and uncover prognostic implications of CD47 and CD68 in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)., Methods: The specimens from 384 patients with completely resected NSCLC were collected for immunohistochemical assays of CD47 and CD68. Cox multivariate proportion hazard analyses were conducted to confirm the independent prognostic value of CD47 and CD68. TCGA database and GSE37745 were used to identify the association between CD47 and immune cells., Results: In 186 pairs of lung cancer and adjacent tissues, the RNA of CD47 was overexpressed in lung cancer tissues (P < 0.001). High expression of CD47 was associated with worse recurrence-free survival in RNA and protein level (P = 0.032 and P < 0.001, respectively). High expression of CD47 was significantly associated with large tumor size (P = 0.004), advanced pathologic TNM stage (P < 0.001), and histology (P = 0.003). Further analyses demonstrated that CD47 and CD68 predicted outcomes of patients independently. In addition, the expression of CD47 correlated with neutrophils, and did not correlated with B cells and CD4 + T cells in the TCGA database and GSE37745., Conclusion: Combined use of CD47 and CD68 exhibited excellent performance in predicting survival of patients with NSCLC. CD47 was a potential therapeutic target for immune therapy of lung cancer.

Stroke is the primary cause of disability and vascular death worldwide, including Asia. Asian characteristics that differ from the West lead to higher stroke incidence. Stroke epidemiology studies in Asia have shown varying levels of mortality, incidence, prevalence, and burden of disease. Hypertension is the most prevalent risk factor found in Asia. Besides ethnicity that is associated with stroke incidence, both systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and blood pressure variability are positively correlated with stroke incidence. Post-stroke cognitive impairment is one of the sequelae that affect one-third of stroke survivors and has become a significant public health concern that is often neglected despite its increasing prevalence. Therefore, it is very important to prevent recurrence by treating stroke optimally and effectively. Bamboos are important nontimber forest plants widely distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa, America, and Pacific islands. They comprise the Bambusoideae in the grass family (Poaceae), including approximately 1700 described species in 127 genera. In spite of the widespread uses of bamboo for food, construction, and bioenergy, the gene repertoire of bamboo still remains largely unexplored. Raddia distichophylla (Schrad. ex Nees) Chase, belonging to the tribe Olyreae (Bambusoideae, Poaceae), is a diploid herbaceous bamboo with only slightly lignified stems. In this study, we report a draft genome assembly of the ∼589 Mb whole-genome sequence of R. distichophylla with a contig N50 length of 86.36 Kb. Repeat sequences account for ∼49.08% of the genome assembly, of which LTR retrotransposons occupy ∼35.99% of the whole genome. A total of 30,763 protein-coding genes were annotated in the R. distichophylla genome with an average transcript size of 2887 bp. Access to this herbaceous bamboo genome sequence will provide novel insights into biochemistry, molecular marker-assisted breeding programs, and germplasm conservation for bamboo species worldwide., (© The Author(s) 2021. Aim: Patients with autoimmune connective tissue disease (ACTD) may have anti-thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) and anti-thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb). This study aimed to compare the prevalence of thyroid autoantibodies in ACTD patients and controls., Methods: All case-control studies published between 1980 and 2019 in English were searched from Medline, Embase, Web of Science, PubMed databases for meta-analysis and subgroup analyses., Results: Total 10,321 ACTD cases and 12,949 healthy controls were included, and the prevalence of thyroid autoantibody positivity was higher in ACTD patients than in controls. Subgroup analysis revealed positive association between TgAb and ACTD in populations from all continents including European, Asian, African, and American. In addition, we found positive association between TgAb positivity and most ACTD cases including RA, SLE, pSS, and UCTD, positive association between TPOAb positivity and all ACTD cases including RA, SLE, pSS, SSc, and UCTD, and positive association between TPOAb positivity and ACTD in European, Asian, and African but not in American populations., Conclusion: Thyroid autoantibodies are more prevalent in ACTD patients than in healthy controls. It is important to screen patients with ACTD for the presence of thyroid autoimmunity, and perform thyroid function tests in clinical evaluation of ACTD patients.

Background: Skull base chordomas in pediatric and adolescent patients are rare and challenging for surgeons., Objective: Well-specified diagnosis and treatment are of great value for the long-term control of chordoma. This study summarizes well-followed pediatric and adolescent chordoma (PAC) patients treated in a single Asian center., Methods: PAC patients were enrolled. Data collected included clinical presentation, tumor volume, texture, surgical approach, pathology, complications, adjuvant radiotherapy (RT), and long-term outcomes., Results: Sixty-two patients were identified from a total of 516 skull base chordoma patients (12%). Diplopia was the most prominent complaint (30%). The craniocervical junction area was the most common location (41.8%) and had the highest proportion of large tumors. The gross total resection (GTR) rate was 20.3%. The GTR rate was lowest for tumors located in the craniocervical junction area. Thirty-eight cases experienced surgical complications. Of note, there was a significant difference in the complication rate between endoscopic approaches (22.7%) and open approaches (57.9%) (P = 0.005). The mean follow-up was 66.5 months. The GTR group showed better survival compared with the non-GTR group (P = 0.043). Metastases were found in two cases. No significant difference in the overall survival (OS) time was found between the group with RT and the group without RT (P = 0.559)., Conclusions: A higher proportion of PAC patients than previously reported exist in the population in Asia, and the metastatic rate is lower. Background: Laurel wilt caused by Raffaelea lauricola is a lethal vascular disease of North American members of the Lauraceae plant family. This fungus and its primary ambrosia beetle vector Xyleborus glabratus originated from Asia; however, there is no report of laurel wilt causing widespread mortality on native Lauraceae trees in Asia. To gain insight into why R. lauricola is a tree-killing plant pathogen in North America, we generated and compared high quality draft genome assemblies of R. lauricola and its closely related non-pathogenic species R. aguacate., Results: Relative to R. aguacate, the R. lauricola genome uniquely encodes several small-secreted proteins that are associated with virulence in other pathogens and is enriched in secondary metabolite biosynthetic clusters, particularly polyketide synthase (PKS), non-ribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) and PKS-NRPS anchored gene clusters. The two species also exhibit significant differences in secreted proteins including CAZymes that are associated with polysaccharide binding including the chitin binding CBM50 (LysM) domain. Transcriptomic comparisons of inoculated redbay trees and in vitro-grown fungal cultures further revealed a number of secreted protein genes, secondary metabolite clusters and alternative sulfur uptake and assimilation pathways that are coordinately up-regulated during infection., Conclusions: Through these comparative analyses we have identified potential adaptations of R. lauricola that may enable it to colonize and cause disease on susceptible hosts. How these adaptations have interacted with co-evolved hosts in Asia, where little to no disease occurs, and non-co-evolved hosts in North America, where lethal wilt occurs, requires additional functional analysis of genes and pathways.

Background: Marriage in general is associated with better mental health in high-income industrialized countries, but it is unknown to what extent this is also the case in South Asia., Methods: The Chitwan Valley Family Study (CVFS) in Nepal is a 24-year family panel study with a recent representative survey to investigate the association between sociodemographic changes and mental health (N = 10,516). We investigated timing of marital transitions and timing of onset of MDD in both male and female respondents, controlling for key confounders., Results: In this setting the transition to marriage is associated with increased odds of subsequent MDD first onset (median OR=2.28). For female respondents, divorce (OR=2.68), early widowed (OR=11.25), and even getting married significantly increased the odds of subsequent MDD onset (OR=3.03). For male respondents, only becoming widowed increased the odds of subsequent MDD (OR=16.32), but marriage did not reduce the odds of MDD., Limitations: Limitations of the study include large-scale protocol that may have resulted in underreporting of MDD and the exclusion of sub-threshold cases that may otherwise have qualified as a case in a clinical setting., Conclusions: In the Nepalese general population, marital transitions increase the odds of subsequent depression, especially among the female population. Purpose: The presentations and geographic incidence of pediatric non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) differ from those of adults. This study delineated the characteristics and outcomes of pediatric NHL in East Asia., Materials and Methods: Medical records of 749 pediatric patients with NHL treated at participating institutions in mainland China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan from January 2008 to December 2013 were reviewed. Demographic and clinical features, survival outcomes, and putative prognostic factors were analyzed., Results: Five hundred thirty patients (71%) were male. The most common pathologic subtypes were Burkitt lymphoma (BL) (36%). Six hundred seven patients (81%) had advanced diseases at diagnosis. The 5-year overall survival and event-free survival (EFS) rates were 89% and 84%. The 5-year EFS rates of BL, lymphoblastic lymphoma, and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma were 88%, 88%, and 89%, and those of anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) and peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) were 71% and 56% (p < 0.001). Central nervous system involvement, high lactate dehydrogenase level (> 250 IU/mL), and advanced disease at diagnosis (≥ stage III) were associated with poor outcomes (p < 0.05). ALCL and PTCL relapsed more frequently than other pathologic subtypes (p < 0.001)., Conclusion: In East Asia, PTCL was more frequent than in Western countries, and bone marrow involvement did not affect treatment outcome. This international study should motivate future collaborative study on NHL in East Asia.

To illustrate the major sources responsible for the redox activity of ambient fine particles during the 2014 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference in Beijing, 3 months of daytime (8:00-19:30 LST) and nighttime (20:00-7:30 LST) particulate kmatter (PM 2.5 ) was collected in Huairou, Beijing from November 3, 2014 through January 31, 2015. PM 2.5 compositions were analyzed, including elements, organic carbon, elemental carbon, water-soluble ions, organics, and redox activities measured by both the dithiothreitol and the macrophage reactive oxygen species (ROS) assays. The mass-normalized redox activity was approximately constant during the noncontrol period (NCP) and control period (CP). The absolute value of the volume-normalized redox activity was about 4 times higher during NCP than that during CP, indicating the effectiveness of the control measures. The statistical analysis results showed that an interquartile range increase in PM 2.5 mass, chemicals, and sources (μg/m 3 ) was associated with the 1-3% increase in redox activity, indicating that the successful control did make a significant reduction in redox activity but did not elucidate that some source controls (i.e., vehicle emissions) could be more effective at reducing redox activity than other control programs (i.e., dust source). This study demonstrated that combustion particles from both solid fuels and liquid fuels could contribute to ROS generation. Furthermore, ROS could be formed in the atmosphere via photochemical reactions, which highlights the need to further research on their formation pathways. A better understanding of the relevant mechanistic pathways and different source contributors to ROS will help to guide strategies for targeted mitigation of the atmospheric oxidation potential and will also help to reduce the great disease stress caused by exposure to air pollution.

Blood pressure variability (BPV) has been shown to be independently associated with cardiovascular (CV) mortality and morbidity. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have also been shown to have increased BPV. We aimed to compare BPV in hypertensive patients with diabetes with those without diabetes. A total of 1443 hypertensive patients measured their blood pressure (BP) twice in the morning and twice before bed at home for a week. Demographic data, history of T2DM, and anti-hypertensive use were captured. Clinic BP was measured twice in the clinic. Control of BP was defined as clinic systolic BP (SBP) <140 mm Hg and home SBP < 135 mm Hg. BPV was based on home SBP measurements. A total of 362(25.1%) hypertensives had diabetes and 47.4% were male. Mean age was 62.3 ± 12.1 years. There was no difference in the mean clinic SBP in both groups (139.9 mm Hg vs 138.4 mm Hg P = .188). However, the mean morning home SBP was significantly higher and control rate lower in hypertensives with diabetes than those without (132.3 ± 15 mm Hg vs 129.7 ± 14.4 mm Hg P = .005, 39.4% vs 47.6% P = .007), respectively. Masked uncontrolled morning hypertension was higher in those with diabetes versus those without (12.8% vs 8.4%, respectively). There was no statistically significant difference in BPV between those with and without diabetes. In summary, clinic SBP was similar in hypertensives with or without diabetes. However, control of BP based on both clinic and home SBP thresholds was poorer in hypertensives with diabetes compared to those without.
