Background: Genotype by environment interactions (GxE) affect a range of production traits in beef cattle. Quantifying the effect of GxE in commercial and multi-breed herds is challenging due to unknown genetic linkage between animals across environment levels. The primary aim of this study was to use multi-trait models to investigate GxE for three heifer fertility traits, corpus luteum (CL) presence, first pregnancy and second pregnancy, in a large tropical beef multibreed dataset (n = 21,037). Environmental levels were defined by two different descriptors, burden of heat load (temperature humidity index, THI) and nutritional availability (based on mean average daily gain for the herd, ADWG). To separate the effects of genetic linkage and real GxE across the environments, 1000 replicates of a simulated phenotype were generated by simulating QTL effects with no GxE onto real marker genotypes from the population, to determine the genetic correlations that could be expected across environments due to the existing genetic linkage only. Correlations from the real phenotypes were then compared to the empirical distribution under the null hypothesis from the simulated data. By adopting this approach, this study attempted to establish if low genetic correlations between environmental levels were due to GxE or insufficient genetic linkage between animals in each environmental level., Results: The correlations (being less than <0.8) for the real phenotypes were indicative of GxE for CL presence between ADWG environmental levels and in pregnancy traits. However, none of the correlations for CL presence or first pregnancy between ADWG levels were below the 5th percentile value for the empirical distribution under the null hypothesis from the simulated data. Only one statistically significant (P < 0.05) indication of GxE for first pregnancy was found between THI environmental levels, where r g = 0.28 and 5th percentile value = 0.29, and this result was marginal., Conclusions: Only one case of statistically significant GxE for fertility traits was detected for first pregnancy between THI environmental levels 2 and 3. Other initial indications of GxE that were observed from the real phenotypes did not prove significant when compared to an empirical null distribution from simulated phenotypes. The impact of cold stress on feedlot cattle has received limited investigation in temperate climates. However, cold stress has been found to impact cattle welfare and production in temperate climatic conditions, where ambient temperature (T A ), precipitation, relative humidity (RH), wind speed (WS) and solar radiation (SR) all influencing apparent temperature. While there are many indices to quantify cold stress in cattle, there are limited indices that directly relate to cattle and account for all the interactions between climatic variables. This makes cold stress difficult to quantify, with on-cattle measures such as core body temperature and shivering difficult metrics to obtain in feedlot cattle. Moreover, individual cattle will react differently to cold conditions based on their production, age, sex, coat characteristics (colour and type), breed and nutrition. While cold stress can be difficult to measure, the production status, behavioural and physiological effects of cold stress have been identified, but generally under what could be considered as extreme cold stress events. Similarly, while mitigation strategies such as shelter, bedding and windbreaks have been investigated, limited information is available surrounding their usefulness in temperate climates. Humate may be a valuable livestock feed additive, with potential effects on nutrient utilisation and animal performance. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of K Humate S 100R supplementation on the feed intake, liveweight gain, and carcass parameters of Angus steers. Within individual pens, 40 weaned steers were allocated to four treatment groups (n = 10/potassium humate K Humate S100R, Omnia Specialities Australia) for 100 days. The treatment groups included Group 1, 35 g K Humate S100R/animal/day; Group 2, 70 g K Humate S100R/animal/day; Group 3, 140 g K Humate S100R/animal/day; and Control Group, which were not supplemented with K Humate S100R (0 g K Humate S100R/animal/day). Chemical and mineral composition of the feed ingredients, dry matter intake (DMI), and average daily weight gains were recorded. The steers were slaughtered as a single group at a commercial Australian abattoir. Standard measures for hot standard carcass weight, eye muscle area, fat depth and coverage, marbling, ossification, meat and fat colour, dressing percentage and loin pH values at 24-hour postmortem were recorded. It was found that the steers allocated to Group 2 had higher DMI (P = 0.003) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) (P < 0.001) compared with those allocated to Group 1 and the Control Group. The MSA marbling score was lowest for steers allocated to the Control Group (P < 0.05) and comparable for those allocated to Groups 1, 2, and 3. Together, these results demonstrate that increased levels of K Humate S100R supplementation improved the carcass quality, via an increase in MSA. Background Many situations are encountered in Australia where the capture and restraint of free-ranging cattle ( Bos taurus/ Bos indicus) is required. Chemical immobilisation via darting is a potentially useful tool for managing and researching large wild herbivores; however, there is no reliable method for its application to Australian cattle. The aim of this study was to develop an efficacious, humane, cost-effective ground darting method for free-ranging cattle. Methods The 30 female cattle were darted and captured on a pastoral station in north-west Australia from a vehicle. Xylazine (0.59 mg/kg) and ketamine (3.59 mg/kg) were used to capture animals and yohimbine (0.10 mg/kg) was used as an antagonist to xylazine to reduce recumbent time. Results Cattle became recumbent at a mean time of 8 min and a mean distance of 260 m from darting. The mortality rate was zero on the day of capture and 7% at 14 days post-capture. Conclusions The majority of darted cattle were successfully immobilised with one dart and recovered within 30 min, with consumables costing approximately A$30 per captured animal. The technique developed represents a rapid and humane method for capturing free-ranging cattle and, with consideration for legislation surrounding use of veterinary chemicals, could be applied in many contexts across Australia. A probabilistic Bayesian method called weights of evidence (WofE) was used to develop a synthetic dataset of cattle farm locations at a national scale across Australia. The synthetic dataset was required for the modelling of livestock movements with a view to assessing biosecurity implications . The WofE method is based on the analysis of spatial relationships between evidential patterns with respect to an event, such as the actual location of a farm. The evidential patterns of cattle farms were derived from maps of land use, land tenure, drainage systems, roads, settlements and long-term averaged rainfall. These evidential patterns were used for delineating and ranking land areas suitable for cattle farming. For each evidential pattern statistics such as a positive weight, a negative weight and a contrast were calculated for estimating the degree of correlation between the evidential patterns and known farm locations. The integrated evidential patterns of known farms were then used for estimating posterior probabilities and splitting land into five different classes according to its suitability for farming. Dairying in Australia is practiced in highly diverse climatic conditions and production systems, which means that re-ranking of genotypes could occur across environments that vary in temperature and humidity-that is, genotype-by-environment interactions (G × E) may exist. The objective of this study was to investigate G × E for heat tolerance with respect to milk production traits in Australian Holsteins. A total of 6.7 million test-day milk yield records for first, second, and third lactations from 491,562 cows and 6,410 sires that had progeny in different climatic environments were included in the analysis. The environmental gradient used was the temperature-humidity index (THI) calculated from climate data from 163 Australian public weather stations between 2003 and 2017. Data were analyzed using univariate reaction norm (RM) sire model, and the results were compared with multi-trait model (MT). The MT analysis treated test-day yields at 5th percentile (THI = 61; i.e., thermoneutral conditions), 50th percentile (THI = 67; i.e., moderate heat stress conditions), and 95th percentile (THI = 73; i.e., high heat stress conditions) of the trajectory of THI as correlated traits. A THI series of 61, 67, and 73, for example, is equivalent to average temperature and relative humidity of approximately 20°C and 45%, 25°C and 45%, and 31°C and 50%, respectively. We observed some degree of heterogeneity of additive (AG) and permanent environmental (PE) variance over the trajectory THI from RM analysis, with estimates decreasing at higher THI values more steeply for PE than for AG variance. The genetic correlations of the tests between the 5th and 95th percentiles of THI for milk, protein, and fat yield from RM were 0.88 ± 0.01 (standard error), 0.79 ± 0.01, and 0.86 ± 0.01, respectively, whereas the corresponding estimates from MT were 0.86 ± 0.02, 0.84 ± 0.03, and 0.87 ± 0.03. We observed lower genetic correlations between the 5th and 95th percentiles of THI for milk tests from recent years (i.e., 2009 and 2017) compared with earlier years (i.e., 2003 and 2008), which suggests that the level of G × E is increasing in the studied population and should be monitored especially in anticipation of future expected increase in daily average temperature and frequency of heat events. Overall, our results indicate presence of G × E at the upper extreme of the trajectory of THI, but the current extent of sire re-ranking may not justify providing separate genetic evaluations for different levels of heat stress. However, variations observed in the sire sensitivity to heat stress suggest that dairy herds in high heat load conditions could benefit more from using heat-tolerant or resilient sires., (The Authors. This study reports the distribution of sperm morphology defects by breed, age, season and region of 11,387 bulls in 500 herds in Australia and near Pacific Islands during annual BBSE. Bull location was divided into 4 broad climatic regions based upon temperature, vegetation and climatic risk. Taking into account the impact of age, season, region, and breed there were differences between breeds in both percent morphologically normal sperm and in some individual categories of sperm abnormality (P < 0.001). Independent of breed, season and region, proximal droplets were significantly increased in bulls less than 20 months of age. This is the first study to comprehensively collect data from this wide geographical area and compare sperm morphology profiles among the Bos indicus and Bos taurus breeds. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential of milk mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy, MIR-derived traits including milk composition, milk fatty acids, and blood metabolic profiles (fatty acids, β-hydroxybutyrate, and urea), and other on-farm data for discriminating cows of good versus poor likelihood of conception to first insemination (i.e., pregnant vs. open). A total of 6,488 spectral and milk production records of 2,987 cows from 19 commercial dairy herds across 3 Australian states were used. Seven models, comprising different explanatory variables, were examined. Model 1 included milk production; concentrations of fat, protein, and lactose; somatic cell count; age at calving; days in milk at herd test; and days from calving to insemination. Model 2 included, in addition to the variables in model 1, milk fatty acids and blood metabolic profiles. The MIR spectrum collected before first insemination was added to model 2 to form model 3. Fat, protein, and lactose percentages, milk fatty acids, and blood metabolic profiles were removed from model 3 to create model 4. Model 5 and model 6 comprised model 4 and either fertility genomic estimated breeding value or principal components obtained from a genomic relationship matrix derived using animal genotypes, respectively. In model 7, all previously described sources of information, but not MIR-derived traits, were used. The models were developed using partial least squares discriminant analysis. The performance of each model was evaluated in 2 ways: 10-fold random cross-validation and herd-by-herd external validation. The accuracy measures were sensitivity (i.e., the proportion of pregnant cows that were correctly classified), specificity (i.e., the proportion of open cows that were correctly classified), and area under the curve (AUC) for the receiver operating curve. The results showed that in all models, prediction accuracy obtained through 10-fold random cross-validation was higher than that of herd-by-herd external validation, with the difference in AUC ranging between 0.01 and 0.09. In the herd-by-herd external validation, using basic on-farm information (model 1) was not sufficient to classify good- and poor-fertility cows; the sensitivity, specificity, and AUC were around 0.66. Compared with model 1, adding milk fatty acids and blood metabolic profiles (model 2) increased the sensitivity, specificity, and AUC by 0.01, 0.02, and 0.02 unit, respectively (i.e., 0.65, 0.63, and 0.678). Incorporating MIR spectra into model 2 resulted in sensitivity, specificity, and AUC values of 0.73, 0.63, and 0.72, respectively (model 3). The comparable prediction accuracies observed for models 3 and 4 mean that useful information from MIR-derived traits is already included in the spectra. Adding the fertility genomic estimated breeding value and animal genotypes (model 7) produced the highest prediction accuracy, with sensitivity, specificity, and AUC values of 0.75, 0.66, and 0.75, respectively. However, removing either the fertility estimated breeding value or animal genotype from model 7 resulted in a reduction of the prediction accuracy of only 0.01 and 0.02, respectively. A simple index that reflects the potential eating quality of beef carcasses is very important for producer feedback. The Meat Standards Australia (MSA) Index reflects variation in carcass quality due to factors that are influenced by producers (hot carcass weight, rib fat depth, hump height, marbling and ossification scores along with milk fed veal category, direct or saleyard consignment, hormonal growth promotant status and sex). In addition, processor impacts on meat quality are standardised so that the MSA Index could be compared across time, breed and geographical regions. Hence, the MSA Index was calculated using achilles hung carcasses, aged for 5 days postmortem. Muscle pH can be impacted by production, transport, lairage or processing factors, hence the MSA Index assumes a constant pH of 5.6 and loin temperature of 7oC for all carcasses. To quantify the cut weight distribution of the 39 MSA cuts in the carcass, 40 Angus steers were sourced from the low (n=13), high (n=15) and myostatin (n=12) muscling selection lines. The left side of each carcass was processed down to the 39 trimmed MSA cuts. There was no difference in MSA cut distribution between the low and high muscling lines (P&gt;0.05), although there were differences with nine cuts from the myostatin line (P&lt;0.05). There was no difference in the MSA Index calculated using actual muscle percentages and using the average from the low and high muscling lines (R 2=0.99). Different cooking methods impacted via a constant offset between eating quality and carcass input traits (R 2=1). The MSA Index calculated for the four most commercially important cuts was highly related to the index calculated using all 39 MSA cuts (R 2=0.98), whilst the accuracy was lower for an index calculated using the striploin (R 2=0.82). Therefore, the MSA Index was calculated as the sum of the 39 eating quality scores predicted at 5 days ageing, based on their most common cooking method, weighted by the proportions of the individual cut relative to total weight of all cuts. The MSA Index provides producers with a tool to assess the impact of management and genetic changes on the predicted eating quality of the carcass. The MSA Index could also be utilised for benchmarking and to track eating quality trends at farm, supply chain, regional, state or national levels.

Plastic sanitary sheaths over artificial insemination (AI) guns have been used at the time of AI to improve hygiene at AI and fertility in cattle, but fertility responses have been variable in studies when AI was performed by professional inseminators. The aims of this study were to investigate whether the use of a sanitary sheath at the time of AI carried out by nonprofessional (do-it-yourself, or DIY) inseminators improves pregnancy rates to AI in pasture-based dairy cows and whether effects of sheaths are greater in cows with contaminated vulvas and in cows at increased risk of extended calving to conception intervals. Lactating dairy cows located in 10 pasture-based herds in a subtropical region of northern Australia were inseminated by herd-based DIY inseminators and assigned to be inseminated with (n = 3,655) or without (n = 3,969) a sanitary sheath, with potential effects assessed using multivariable logistic regression. Overall, use of a sheath at the time of AI did not significantly affect pregnancy rates to AI (36.3% for those inseminated without a sheath vs. 36.8% for those inseminated with a sheath; odds ratio: 1.02; 95% confidence interval: 0.92-1.11). Effects of using a sheath on pregnancy rates to AI varied by herd, with lower pregnancy rates with the use of sheaths in 1 herd and some evidence of increases in 3 herds. Unexpectedly, there was evidence that the effect of sheath on pregnancy rates was less positive (or more negative) when the vulva was classified as dirty before any cleaning of the vulva before insemination compared with when the vulva was classified as clean (interaction odds ratio: 0.75; 95% CI: 0.56-1.00). Interactions between sheath and other explanatory variables that could affect fertility were not significant; thus, there was no compelling evidence that the effect of using a sheath was modified by any of these variables. We conclude that the use of sheaths during AI of pasture-based dairy cows by DIY inseminators does not, on average, markedly improve pregnancy rates to AI. However, responses may vary between herds, and the response to sheaths may be inferior (i.e., less positive or more negative) when a cow's vulva is contaminated with feces or discharge at the time of AI compared with when the vulva is clean., (Copyright © 2019 American Dairy Science Association. The objectives of this study were to assess antibody and cellular immune responses in first-lactation dairy heifers reared under a pasture-based production system and to investigate associations between immune competence and stress responsiveness, health, and productivity. A commercial vaccine was used to induce antibody and cellular immune responses and, based on measured responses, animals were classified as above average, average, and below average for each trait independently and in combination (overall immune competence). Overall immune competence phenotypic rankings were generated by combining standardized residual values for antibody and cellular responses measured in individual heifers. Cortisol responses to handling and yarding were used to assess stress responsiveness, worm egg counts were used to assess internal parasite burden, somatic cell counts to assess udder health and estimates of total daily milk volume, and milk fat and milk protein contents to assess productivity. A total of 393 Holstein-Friesian and Holstein-Friesian × Jersey crossbred heifers from 2 herds practicing seasonal calving in a pasture-fed production system were enrolled in the study. The immune competence phenotypes of individual heifers were assessed before their first mating and their subsequent performance during their first lactation was monitored. Animals with below-average antibody and cellular immune competence had higher serum cortisol concentrations compared with their counterparts following handling, suggesting they had a reduced ability to cope with management-induced stress. Furthermore, a significant negative (favorable) correlation was observed between antibody responses and stress responsiveness. Similarly, correlations between antibody responses and internal parasite burden were significant and negative (favorable). Heifers that have an earlier age at puberty often have greater lifetime productivity. Age at puberty is moderately heritable so selection should effectively reduce the number of days to puberty, and improve heifer productivity and profitability as a result. However, recording age at puberty is intensive, requiring repeat ovarian scanning to determine age at first corpus luteum (AGECL). Genomic selection has been proposed as a strategy to select for earlier age at puberty; however, large reference populations of cows with AGECL records and genotypes would be required to generate accurate GEBV for this trait. Reproductive maturity score (RMS) is a proxy trait for age at puberty for implementation in northern Australia beef herds, where large scale recording of AGECL is not feasible. RMS assigns a score of 0 to 5 from a single ovarian scan to describe ovarian maturity at ~600 d. Here we use multivariate genomic prediction to evaluate the value of a large RMS data set to improve accuracy of GEBV for age at puberty (AGECL). There were 882 Brahman and 990 Tropical Composite heifers with AGECL phenotypes, and an independent set of 974 Brahman, 1,798 Santa Gertrudis, and 910 Droughtmaster heifers with RMS phenotypes. All animals had 728,785 real or imputed SNP genotypes. The correlation of AGECL and RMS (h2 = 0.23) was estimated as -0.83 using the genomic information. This result also demonstrates that using genomic information it is possible to estimate genetic correlations between traits collected on different animals in different herds, with minimal or unknown pedigree linkage between them. Inclusion of heifers with RMS in the multi-trait model improved the accuracy of genomic evaluations for AGECL. Accuracy of RMS GEBV generally did not improve by adding heifers with AGECL phenotypes into the reference population. These results suggest that RMS and AGECL may be used together in a multi-trait prediction model to increase the accuracy of prediction for age at puberty in tropically adapted beef cattle.

A total of 200 Bos indicus/Bos taurus cross steers were allocated to control (CON) and an oestradiol (OES) implant treatments and pasture finished for 389 days. Longissimus lumborum (LL) and gluteus medius (GM) samples were aged for 5 and 35 days. Live weight, carcass weight and ossification scores (P < 0.05) increased in OES relative to CON. The three-way interaction between treatment, days aged and muscle was significant (P < 0.05) for tenderness, overall liking and meat palatability, whereby the OES had lower scores relative to CON at 5 days in LL (P < 0.05), although the difference halved by 35 days. For the GM, OES scores at 5 days were lower than CON (P < 0.05), apart from like flavour, and differences reduced by 35 days. LL shear force was higher for OES at 5 days (P < 0.05), though not 35 days (P > 0.05), or the GM at 5 or 35 days (P > 0.05). Genetic and phenotypic parameters for feed efficiency, growth, and carcass traits for Australian Angus beef cattle were estimated. Growth traits included birth weight (BWT), 200-d weight (200dWT), 400-d weight (400dWT), and 600-d weight (600dWT). Traits associated with feed efficiency were average daily weight gain (ADG), metabolic midweight, average of daily feed intake (FI), feed conversion ratio (FCR), residual feed intake (RFI), and residual gain (RG). Carcass traits involved were carcass eye muscle area (CEMA), carcass intramuscular fat (IMF), subcutaneous fat depths at the 12th/13th rib (CRIB), rump P8 fat depth (P8FAT), and carcass weight (CWT). For growth traits, heritability estimates ranged from 0.14 ± 0.03 for 200dWT to 0.48 ± 0.06 for 600dWT. For feed efficiency traits, direct heritability estimates for FI, FCR, RFI, and RG were 0.55 ± 0.08, 0.20 ± 0.06, 0.40 ± 0.07, and 0.19 ± 0.06, respectively. High heritability estimates were observed for CEMA, IMF, P8FAT, and CWT of 0.52 ± 0.09, 0.61 ± 0.09, 0.55 ± 0.09, and 0.66 ± 0.09, respectively. Strong positive genetic correlations were found for FI with 200dWT, 400dWT, and 600dWT of 0.68 ± 0.09, 0.42 ± 0.11, and 0.61 ± 0.07, respectively. Weak genetic correlations were observed between RFI and growth traits. For carcass traits, genetic correlations between RFI and CEMA, IMF, CRIB, P8FAT, CWT were -0.19 ± 0.14, 0.31 ± 0.14, 0.18 ± 0.16, 0.24 ± 0.13, and 0.40 ± 0.12, respectively. There was a tendency for low to moderate unfavorable genetic associations between feed efficiency traits, evaluated as RFI and RG, with growth and carcass traits. This implies that selection for RFI would have slight negative impacts on growth and reduce carcass quality. To avoid this, it would be necessary to build selection indices to select feed efficient animals without compromising growth and meat quality.

The Meat Standards Australia (MSA) grading scheme has the ability to predict beef eating quality for each 'cut×cooking method combination' from animal and carcass traits such as sex, age, breed, marbling, hot carcass weight and fatness, ageing time, etc. Following MSA testing protocols, a total of 22 different muscles, cooked by four different cooking methods and to three different degrees of doneness, were tasted by over 19 000 consumers from Northern Ireland, Poland, Ireland, France and Australia. Consumers scored the sensory characteristics (tenderness, flavor liking, juiciness and overall liking) and then allocated samples to one of four quality grades: unsatisfactory, good-every-day, better-than-every-day and premium. We observed that 26% of the beef was unsatisfactory. As previously reported, 68% of samples were allocated to the correct quality grades using the MSA grading scheme. Furthermore, only 7% of the beef unsatisfactory to consumers was misclassified as acceptable. Overall, we concluded that an MSA-like grading scheme could be used to predict beef eating quality and hence underpin commercial brands or labels in a number of European countries, and possibly the whole of Europe. In addition, such an eating quality guarantee system may allow the implementation of an MSA genetic index to improve eating quality through genetics as well as through management. Finally, such an eating quality guarantee system is likely to generate economic benefits to be shared along the beef supply chain from farmers to retailors, as consumers are willing to pay more for a better quality product.

Enteric methane (CH 4 ) production from cattle contributes to global greenhouse gas emissions. Measurement of enteric CH 4 is complex, expensive, and impractical at large scales; therefore, models are commonly used to predict CH 4 production. However, building robust prediction models requires extensive data from animals under different management systems worldwide. The objectives of this study were to (1) collate a global database of enteric CH 4 production from individual lactating dairy cattle; (2) determine the availability of key variables for predicting enteric CH 4 production (g/day per cow), yield [g/kg dry matter intake (DMI)], and intensity (g/kg energy corrected milk) and their respective relationships; (3) develop intercontinental and regional models and cross-validate their performance; and (4) assess the trade-off between availability of on-farm inputs and CH 4 prediction accuracy. The intercontinental database covered Europe (EU), the United States (US), and Australia (AU). A sequential approach was taken by incrementally adding key variables to develop models with increasing complexity. Methane emissions were predicted by fitting linear mixed models. Within model categories, an intercontinental model with the most available independent variables performed best with root mean square prediction error (RMSPE) as a percentage of mean observed value of 16.6%, 14.7%, and 19.8% for intercontinental, EU, and United States regions, respectively. Less complex models requiring only DMI had predictive ability comparable to complex models. Enteric CH 4 production, yield, and intensity prediction models developed on an intercontinental basis had similar performance across regions, however, intercepts and slopes were different with implications for prediction. Revised CH 4 emission conversion factors for specific regions are required to improve CH 4 production estimates in national inventories. In conclusion, information on DMI is required for good prediction, and other factors such as dietary neutral detergent fiber (NDF) concentration, improve the prediction. Benefits of hormonal growth promotants (HGPs) include production efficiency, profit, and reduced environmental effects for beef cattle. Questions remain about effects of HGP on beef quality, particularly on measures of toughness such as Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF), tenderness, and other taste-panel attributes of beef. The objective of this meta-analysis was to assess the effects of HGP on beef quality using the results of randomized controlled trials identified from 3 searched databases. Thirty-one experiments with 181 treatment comparisons were used to evaluate the effects of HGP on WBSF and sensory measures of beef quality. Experiments varied in design, used many different hormonal treatments and combinations, which were single or repeated, in different breeds and sex groups of cattle, with or without electrical stimulation, and with different lengths of time on feed and beef aging. The effects of multiple treatment comparisons in experiments were evaluated using robust regression models and compared to Knapp-Hartung and permutation meta-analytical methods. Increased WBSF was associated with HGP treatment. Use of multiple HGP implants was associated with an increase in WBSF of 0.248 kg (95% CI = 0.203 to 0.292). Effects of a single implant only increased WBSF by 0.176 kg (95% CI = 0.109 to 0.242). Aging of beef did not alter the association of HGP with increased WBSF (P = 0.105); however, the point direction was toward a reduced effect with aging (standardized mean difference [SMD] = -0.005 per day aged). While aging lowered WBSF, it did not reduce the SMD between HGP treatment and reference groups. Comparisons using trenbolone acetate did not differ in WBSF from those using other implants (P > 0.15). The findings on sensory panel tenderness differ from those using WBSF as HGP treatment was not associated with reduced tenderness (P > 0.3) and multiple HGP treatments improved tenderness (SMD = 0.468) compared to a single implant. Further, juiciness, flavor, and connective tissue were not associated with HGP use, whereas there was a marked 5.5-point decrease in the Meat Standards Australia meat quality 4 score, albeit with limited experiments. In general, the true variance of experiments, tau2 (τ2) was low (<0.1), but heterogeneity, I2 was high (>50%) indicating that much of the variance was due to factors other than measurement error. More targeted studies on the role of HGP in influencing beef quality are needed.

Reports of positive or neutral effects of grazing on plant species richness have prompted calls for livestock grazing to be used as a tool for managing land for conservation. Grazing effects, however, are likely to vary among different response variables, types, and intensity of grazing, and across abiotic conditions. We aimed to examine how grazing affects ecosystem structure, function, and composition. We compiled a database of 7615 records reporting an effect of grazing by sheep and cattle on 278 biotic and abiotic response variables for published studies across Australia. Using these data, we derived three ecosystem measures based on structure, function, and composition, which were compared against six contrasts of grazing pressure, ranging from low to heavy, two different herbivores (sheep, cattle), and across three different climatic zones. Grazing reduced structure (by 35%), function (24%), and composition (10%). Structure and function (but not composition) declined more when grazed by sheep and cattle together than sheep alone. Grazing reduced plant biomass (40%), animal richness (15%), and plant and animal abundance, and plant and litter cover (25%), but had no effect on plant richness nor soil function. The negative effects of grazing on plant biomass, plant cover, and soil function were more pronounced in drier environments. Grazing effects on plant and animal richness and composition were constant, or even declined, with increasing aridity. Our study represents a comprehensive continental assessment of the implications of grazing for managing Australian rangelands. Grazing effects were largely negative, even at very low levels of grazing. Overall, our results suggest that livestock grazing in Australia is unlikely to produce positive outcomes for ecosystem structure, function, and composition or even as a blanket conservation tool unless reduction in specific response variables is an explicit management objective.

Automated walk-over weighing systems can be used to monitor liveweights of cattle. Minimal literature exists to describe agreement between automated and static scales, and no known studies describe repeatability when used for daily measurements of dairy cows. This study establishes the repeatability of an automated walk-over cattle-weighing system, and agreement with static electronic scales, when used in a commercial dairy herd to weigh lactating cows. Forty-six lactating dairy cows from a seasonal calving, pasture-based dairy herd in southwest Victoria, Australia, were weighed once using a set of static scales and repeatedly using an automated walk-over weighing system at the exit of a rotary dairy. Substantial agreement was observed between the automated and static scales when assessed using Lin's concordance correlation coefficient. Weights measured by the automated walkover scales were within 5% of those measured by the static scales in 96% of weighings. Bland and Altman's 95% limits of agreement were -23.3 to 43.6 kg, a range of 66.9 kg. The 95% repeatability coefficient for automated weighings was 46.3 kg. Removal of a single outlier from the data set increased Lin's concordance coefficient, narrowed Bland and Altman's 95% limits of agreement to a range of 32.5 kg, and reduced the 95% repeatability coefficient to 18.7 kg. Cow misbehavior during walk-over weighing accounted for many of the larger weight discrepancies. The automated walk-over weighing system showed substantial agreement with the static scales when assessed using Lin's concordance correlation coefficient. This contrasted with limited agreement when assessed using Bland and Altman's method, largely due to poor repeatability. This suggests the automated weighing system is inadequate for detecting small liveweight differences in individual cows based on comparisons of single weights. Misbehaviors and other factors can result in the recording of spurious values on walk-over scales. Excluding outlier weights and comparing means of 7 consecutive daily weights may improve agreement sufficiently to allow meaningful assessment of small short-term changes in automated weights in individuals and groups of cows., (Copyright © 2013 American Dairy Science Association. Cows milked in pasture-based automatic milking systems (AMS) have greater milking intervals than cows milked in indoor AMS. Long milking intervals greater than 16h have a negative effect on milk yield and udder health. The impact of 2 systems of pasture allocation in AMS on milking interval and yield was investigated at the FutureDairy AMS research farm (Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute, New South Wales Department of Primary Industries, Camden, New South Wales, Australia) in late November to early December 2010. Two- (2WG) versus 3-way grazing (3WG) allocations per 24-h period were compared in a field study to test the hypothesis that an increase in the frequency of pasture allocation would reduce the milking interval and, therefore, increase milking frequency. The study involved the entire milking herd of 145 cows, with (mean ± SD) DIM=121±90d, 7-d average milking frequency=1.52±0.41 milkings/cow per day, and 7-d average milk yield=21.3±7.6kg/cow per day. Cows were milked using 2 DeLaval VMS milking units (DeLaval International AB, Tumba, Sweden). Cows in the 3WG treatment had 31% reduced milking interval, 40% greater milking frequency, and 20% greater daily milk production compared with 2WG. Increased milking frequency and milk production for 3WG was associated with greater utililization levels of the AMS milking units throughout the day. These results support the recommendation that, wherever possible, farmers installing AMS should incorporate sufficient infrastructure to accommodate 3WG, which provides additional flexibility with managing extremely long (and short) milking intervals., (Copyright © 2013 American Dairy Science Association. This paper reviews results of studies on effects of fetal programming and maternal nutrition during pregnancy on growth, efficiency, carcass, muscle, and meat quality characteristics of cattle. It includes results from our Australian Beef Cooperative Research Centre studies on factors such as chronic severe nutritional restriction from approximately d 80 of pregnancy to parturition and/or throughout lactation used to create early-life growth differences in the offspring of cows within pasture-based systems and the effect of these treatments on production characteristics to 30 mo of age. Fetal programming and related maternal effects are most pronounced and explain substantial amounts of variation for growth-related production characteristics such as BW, feed intake, carcass weight, muscle weights, meat yield, and fat and bone weights at any given age but are less evident when assessed at the same BW and carcass weight. Some effects of maternal and early-life factors in our studies were evident for efficiency traits but fewer affected beef quality characteristics at 30 mo of age, explaining only small amounts of variation in these traits. It is difficult to uncouple maternal nutritional effects specific to prenatal life from those that carry over to the postnatal period until weaning, particularly the effects of maternal nutrition during pregnancy on subsequent lactational performance. Hence, experimental design considerations for studying fetal programming effects on offspring during later life are discussed in relation to minimizing or removing prenatal and postnatal confounding effects. The relative contribution of fetal programming to the profitability of beef production systems is also briefly discussed. In this regard, the importance of health and survival of cows and calves, the capacity of cows to rebreed in a timely manner, and the efficiency with which feed and other resources are used cannot be overemphasized in relation to economics, welfare, and the environment.

Feed makes up a large proportion of variable costs in dairying. For this reason, selection for traits associated with feed conversion efficiency should lead to greater profitability of dairying. Residual feed intake (RFI) is the difference between actual and predicted feed intakes and is a useful selection criterion for greater feed efficiency. However, measuring individual feed intakes on a large scale is prohibitively expensive. A panel of DNA markers explaining genetic variation in this trait would enable cost-effective genomic selection for this trait. With the aim of enabling genomic selection for RFI, we used data from almost 2,000 heifers measured for growth rate and feed intake in Australia (AU) and New Zealand (NZ) genotyped for 625,000 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. Substantial variation in RFI and 250-d body weight (BW250) was demonstrated. Heritabilities of RFI and BW250 estimated using genomic relationships among the heifers were 0.22 and 0.28 in AU heifers and 0.38 and 0.44 in NZ heifers, respectively. Genomic breeding values for RFI and BW250 were derived using genomic BLUP and 2 bayesian methods (BayesA, BayesMulti). The accuracies of genomic breeding values for RFI were evaluated using cross-validation. When 624,930 SNP were used to derive the prediction equation, the accuracies averaged 0.37 and 0.31 for RFI in AU and NZ validation data sets, respectively, and 0.40 and 0.25 for BW250 in AU and NZ, respectively. The greatest advantage of using the full 624,930 SNP over a reduced panel of 36,673 SNP (the widely used BovineSNP50 array) was when the reference population included only animals from either the AU or the NZ experiment. Finally, the bayesian methods were also used for quantitative trait loci detection. On chromosome 14 at around 25 Mb, several SNP closest to PLAG1 (a gene believed to affect stature in humans and cattle) had an effect on BW250 in both AU and NZ populations. In addition, 8 SNP with large effects on RFI were located on chromosome 14 at around 35.7 Mb. Relationships between temperament and a range of performance, carcass, and meat quality traits in young cattle were studied in 2 experiments conducted in New South Wales (NSW) and Western Australia (WA), Australia. In both experiments, growth rates of cattle were assessed during backgrounding on pasture and grain finishing in a feedlot. Carcass and objective meat quality characteristics were measured after slaughter. Feed intake and efficiency during grain finishing were also determined in NSW. Brahman (n = 82 steers and 82 heifers) and Angus (n = 25 steers and 24 heifers) cattle were used in the NSW experiment. In NSW, temperament was assessed by measuring flight speed [FS, m/s on exit from the chute (crush)] on 14 occasions, and by assessing agitation score during confinement in the crush (CS; 1 = calm to 5 = highly agitated) on 17 occasions over the course of the experiment. Brahman (n = 173) and Angus (n = 20) steers were used in the WA experiment. In WA, temperament was assessed by measuring FS on 2 occasions during backgrounding and on 2 occasions during grain feeding. At both sites, a hormonal growth promotant (Revalor-H, Virbac, Milperra, New South Wales, Australia) was applied to one-half of the cattle at feedlot entry, and the Brahman cattle were polymorphic for 2 calpain-system markers for beef tenderness. Temperament was not related (most P > 0.05) to tenderness gene marker status in Brahman cattle and was not (all P > 0.26) modified by the growth promotant treatment in either breed. The Brahman cattle had greater individual variation in, and greater correlations within and between, repeated assessments of FS and CS than did the Angus cattle. Correlations for repeated measures of FS were greater than for repeated assessments of CS, and the strength of correlations for both declined over time. Average FS or CS for each experiment and location (NSW or WA × backgrounding or finishing) were more highly correlated than individual measurements, indicating that the average values were a more reliable assessment of cattle temperament than any single measure. In Brahman cattle, increased average FS and CS were associated with significant (P < 0.05) reductions in backgrounding and feedlot growth rates, feed intake and time spent eating, carcass weight, and objective measures of meat quality. In Angus cattle, the associations between temperament and growth rates, feed intake, and carcass traits were weaker than in Brahmans, although the strength of relationships with meat quality were similar.

Cattle production plays a significant role in terms of world food production. Nearly 82% of the world's 1.2 billion cattle can be found in developing countries. An increasing demand for meat in developing countries has seen an increase in intensification of animal industries, and a move to cross-bred animals. Heat tolerance is considered to be one of the most important adaptive aspects for cattle, and the lack of thermally-tolerant breeds is a major constraint on cattle production in many countries. There is a need to not only identify heat tolerant breeds, but also heat tolerant animals within a non-tolerant breed. Identification of heat tolerant animals is not easy under field conditions. In this study, panting score (0 to 4.5 scale where 0 = no stress and 4.5 = extreme stress) and the heat load index (HLI) [HLI(BG<25°C) = 10.66 + 0.28 × rh + 1.30 × BG - WS; and, HLI (BG> 25°C) = 8.62 + 0.38 × rh + 1.55 × BG - 0.5 × WS + e((2.4 - WS)), where BG = black globe temperature ((o)C), rh = relative humidity (decimal form), WS = wind speed (m/s) and e is the base of the natural logarithm] were used to assess the heat tolerance of 17 genotypes (12,757 steers) within 13 Australian feedlots over three summers. The cattle were assessed under natural climatic conditions in which HLI ranged from thermonuetral (HLI < 70) to extreme (HLI > 96; black globe temperature = 40.2°C, relative humidity = 64%, wind speed = 1.58 m/s). When HLI > 96 a greater number (P < 0.001) of pure bred Bos taurus and crosses of Bos taurus cattle had a panting score ≥ 2 compared to Brahman cattle, and Brahman-cross cattle. The heat tolerance of the assessed breeds was verified using panting scores and the HLI. Heat tolerance of cattle can be assessed under field conditions by using panting score and HLI.

Two studies were conducted to assess the performance of a commercially available neck-mounted activity meter to detect cows about to ovulate in two paddock-based Holstein-Friesian dairy herds. The activity monitoring system recorded cow activity count in 2-hourly periods. Study I investigated the ability of the system to detect cow ovulatory periods in dairy herds managed in two different Australian environments and breeding systems using five activity alert algorithms. Herd 1 consisted of approximately 130 milking cows calving year-round in a sub-tropical environment and kept in a single dry lot paddock. Herd 2 consisted of approximately 400 milking cows calving seasonally in a temperate climate and fed pasture by rotation through multiple grazing paddocks. Ovulatory periods and non-ovulatory days were identified using milk progesterone monitoring alone or in combination with ovarian ultrasonography; using these 'gold standards' 141 and 135 ovulatory periods were identified in 64 and 135 cows in Herds 1 and 2 respectively. Sensitivity of the activity monitoring system for detecting cow ovulatory periods ranged from 79.4% to 94.1%, specificity from 90.0% to 98.2% and positive predictive value from 35.8% to 75.8%. Study II investigated the ability of the activity meter system to predict the timing of ovulations in paddock-based pasture-fed dairy cattle (Herd 2). The time of ovulation was estimated by repeat trans-rectal ovarian ultrasonography at approximately 0, 12, 24 and 36 h after artificial insemination (AI). The mean times (± SD) from onset and end of increased activity to ovulation were 33.4 ± 12.4 and 17.3 ± 12.8 h respectively (n = 94). Fifty per cent of cows (n = 47) ovulated within the 8-h period between 30 to 38 hs after the onset of increased activity, 76.6% (n = 72) within the 16 h between 24 to 40 h, 85.1% (n = 80) within the 24 h between 18 and 42 h and 90.4% (n = 85) within the 32 h from 19 to 51 h after the onset of increased activity. Results from these studies show that in paddock-based dairy cows in two diverse management systems, this neck-mounted activity meter system detects high proportions of cows that are about to ovulate and provides a useful indication of when ovulation is likely to occur. The objectives of this study were to use genotypes for 12 commercially available GeneSTAR gene markers on 12,330 animals to estimate gene frequencies of the markers across a range of beef cattle breeds and to determine the effects of these markers on target traits using a subset of animals with both genotypic and phenotypic data (n = 9,414) for at least one trait. Tenderness markers (T1, T2, T3, T4) were assessed against shear force of 2 muscles, marbling markers (M1, M2, M3, M4) were assessed against intramuscular fat percent and marbling score, and the feed-efficiency markers (N1, N2, N3, N4) were assessed on daily feed intake and residual feed intake. Animals used were from 5 beef cattle research populations: Beef Cooperative Research Centre 1 (CRC1) temperate breeds (Angus, Hereford, Murray Grey, Shorthorn; n = 3,721), Beef CRC1 tropical breeds (Brahman, Santa Gertrudis, Belmont Red; n = 3,899), Beef CRC2 tropically adapted genotypes (Brahman and Tropical Composite; n = 4,446), and progeny test programs in Angus (n = 742) and Shorthorn (n = 347). Gene frequencies varied significantly across breeds and markers, with 86% of the markers estimated to be in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Tenderness markers T1 and T2 had significant effects (P < 0.0001) on shear force, with the size and direction of effects consistent across the range of breeds for the 3 populations with phenotypes. However, sizes of marker effects differed across muscles and reduced upon tenderstretch hanging. Marker T3 was not significant (P > 0.05) in CRC1 temperate breeds but was significant (P < 0.0001) in tropically adapted breeds, with a large effect in Brahman. Marker T4 was significant for shear force in 2 CRC1 tropical breeds but with a different favorable allele. The 4 marbling markers were generally not significantly associated with intramuscular fat percent or marbling score across the 5 populations studied. Feed-efficiency markers N3 and N4 were significantly associated with residual feed intake and daily feed intake in the CRC1 temperate data set, in which a subset of the CRC1 data was used in their discovery, but were not significant in the other 4 populations. Markers N1 and N2 were generally not significant, but when they were significant, their direction of effects differed. The 12 GeneSTAR markers were studied in populations consisting of different breeds and genetic variability and showed gene frequencies and estimated effects that varied greatly across traits, suggesting large differences between the markers for their utility as selection tools in these populations.

Open cattle feedlots are a source of air pollutants that include particular matter (PM). Over 24 h, exposure to ambient concentrations of 50 microg m(-3) of the coarse-sized fraction PM (aerodynamic diameter <10 microm [PM(10)]) is recognized as a health concern for humans. The objective of our study was to document PM(10) concentration and emissions at two cattle feedlots in Australia over several days in summer. Two automated samplers were used to monitor the background and in-feedlot PM(10) concentrations. At the in-feedlot location, the PM(10) emission was calculated using a dispersion model. Our measurements revealed that the 24-h PM(10) concentrations on some of the days approached or exceeded the health criteria threshold of 50 microg m(-3) used in Australia. A key factor responsible for the generation of PM(10) was the increased activity of cattle in the evening that coincided with peak concentrations of PM(10) (maximum, 792 microg m(-3)) between 1930 and 2000 h. Rain coincided with a severe decline in PM(10) concentration and emission. A dispersion model used in our study estimated the emission of PM(10) between 31 and 60 g animal(-1) d(-1). These data contribute to needed information on PM(10) associated with livestock to develop results-based environmental policy.

Existing theoretical frameworks suggest three predictions relevant to grazing effects in Australian aridlands: grazing has a negative but moderate effect on plant species richness; a separate "state" resulting from degradation caused by extreme grazing will be evident; some plant species will have a strong association with grazing relief refuges that have only ever been subject to light grazing. These predictions were examined in the dune swales of an Australian desert, with data on herbaceous species collected along transects up to 14 km from artificial water points between four and 33 years old. A cumulative grazing index was constructed utilizing both the spatial occupation patterns of cattle and the length of exposure. Despite restricting sampling to a narrow habitat, silt/clay content and soil pH influence floristic patterns independent of grazing. The analysis of quadrat data in relation to grazing revealed almost no patterns in plant cover, species richness (at two different scales), or abundance across plant life-form groups. Five species had an increasing response, and seven a decreasing response, while the only species restricted to areas of extremely low grazing pressure was sufficiently rare that it could have occurred there by chance. The dominant annual grass, the most common shrub, and a perennial tussock-forming sedge all decrease with high levels of grazing. Most species exhibit an ephemeral life strategy in response to unreliable rainfall, and this boom and bust strategy effectively doubles as an adaptation to grazing. After 20 years of exposure to managed grazing with domestic stock in Australian dune swales, patterns in species richness have not emerged in response to grazing pressure, the ecosystem has not been transformed to another degradation "state," and there is no evidence that grazing relief refuges provide havens for species highly sensitive to grazing.

This study determined the extent to which bovine longissimus lumborum muscle (LLM) myofibers are influenced by nutrition for 120 d from weaning and the time-course of recovery after severe postweaning nutritional restriction. After weaning, 3 groups of Belmont Red cattle, a tropically adapted breed, were fed to achieve rapid growth (RG, > or =0.6 kg of BW gain/d; n = 16), slow growth (SG, 0.2 kg of BW gain/d; n = 17), or BW loss (WL, 10% loss of weaning weight; n = 17) over 120 d. They were then grazed as 1 group at pasture with forage supplementation for 600 d until slaughter at approximately 500 kg of BW. Samples of LLM were taken from 8 to 12 animals per treatment 6 d before (baseline) and 115, 204, 324, and 476 d after commencement of the study and from all cattle at slaughter (d 721). Myofiber characteristics were determined by immunocytochemical staining of myosin heavy chains. Cross-sectional areas (CSA) of the major myofiber types 1, 2A, and 2X in WL were reduced at d 115 compared with baseline and with the growth groups (all P < 0.001); however, there was little difference in the percentage of the different myofiber types (all P > 0.10). Differences in CSA of the major myofiber types between WL and the growth groups at 115 d were smallest for type 1 (slow oxidative) and greatest for type 2X (fast glycolytic). Consequently, the relative area (percentage of total myofiber area) of type 1 myofibers in WL was significantly greater at 115 d than in the growth groups (P < 0.001). During recovery from postweaning nutritional restriction, significant differences in major myofiber type percentages were not evident (all P > 0.10), and by 721 d CSA of myofiber types differed little between the treatment groups, although SG had greater CSA of type 1 (P < 0.05) and type 2A (P < 0.01) myofibers than WL and RG. At 721 d, the relative area of type 2A myofibers was less in WL compared with SG (P < 0.01) and RG (P < 0.05) and of type 2X myofibers greater (P < 0.05) in WL compared with SG. It is concluded that in the LLM of cattle undergoing severe nutritional restriction immediately postweaning, the size of the more glycolytic fiber types is more adversely affected than the more oxidative types, resulting in an increased relative area of type 1, slow oxidative myofibers. However, given adequate time and nutriment at pasture, LLM myofiber characteristics of cattle recovered to near normal after severe, chronic nutritional restriction immediately postweaning, consistent with earlier findings for beef quality.

A multi-trait (MT) random regression (RR) test day (TD) model has been developed for genetic evaluation of somatic cell scores for Australian dairy cattle, where first, second and third lactations were considered as three different but correlated traits. The model includes herd-test-day, year-season, age at calving, heterosis and lactation curves modelled with Legendre polynomials as fixed effects, and random genetic and permanent environmental effects modelled with Legendre polynomials. Residual variance varied across the lactation trajectory. The genetic parameters were estimated using asreml. The heritability estimates ranged from 0.05 to 0.16. The genetic correlations between lactations and between test days within lactations were consistent with most of the published results. Preconditioned conjugate gradient algorithm with iteration on data was implemented for solving the system of equations. For reliability approximation, the method of Tier and Meyer was used. The genetic evaluation system was validated with Interbull validation method III by comparing proofs from a complete evaluation with those from an evaluation based on a data set excluding the most recent 4 years. The genetic trend estimate was in the allowed range and correlations between the two sets of proofs were very high. Additionally, the RR model was compared to the previous test day model. The correlations of proofs between both models were high (0.97) for bulls with high reliabilities. The correlations of bulls decreased with increasing incompleteness of daughter performance information. The correlations between the breeding values from two consecutive runs were high ranging from 0.97 to 0.99. The MT RR TD model was able to make effective use of available information on young bulls and cows, and could offer an opportunity to breeders to utilize estimated breeding values for first and later lactations.

Objective: To examine the impact of improving the average value of cows sold, the risk of decreasing the number weaned, and total sales on the profitability of northern Australian cattle breeding properties., Design: Gather, model and interpret breeder herd performances and production parameters on properties from six beef-producing regions in northern Australia., Procedure: Production parameters, prices, costs and herd structure were entered into a herd simulation model for six northern Australian breeding properties that spay females to enhance their marketing options. After the data were validated by management, alternative management strategies were modelled using current market prices and most likely herd outcomes., Results: The model predicted a close relationship between the average sale value of cows, the total herd sales and the gross margin/adult equivalent. Keeping breeders out of the herd to fatten generally improves their sale value, and this can be cost-effective, despite the lower number of progeny produced and the subsequent reduction in total herd sales. Furthermore, if the price of culled cows exceeds the price of culled heifers, provided there are sufficient replacement pregnant heifers available to maintain the breeder herd nucleus, substantial gains in profitability can be obtained by decreasing the age at which cows are culled from the herd., Conclusion: Generalised recommendations on improving reproductive performance are not necessarily the most cost-effective strategy to improve breeder herd profitability. Judicious use of simulation models is essential to help develop the best turnoff strategies for females and to improve station profitability.

Although several forage species such as perennial ryegrass are predominant, there is a wide range of forage species that could be grown in subtropical and temperate regions in Australia as dairy pastures. These species have differing seasonal patterns of growth, nutrient quality, and water-use efficiency, as demonstrated in a large experiment evaluating over 30 species at the University of Sydney (Camden, New South Wales, Australia). Some species can be grazed, whereas others require mechanical harvesting, which incurs a further cost. Previous comparisons of species that relied on yield of dry matter per unit of some input (typically land or water) did not simultaneously take into account the season in which forage is produced, or other factors related to the costs of production and delivery to the cows. To effectively compare the profitability of individual species, or combinations of species, requires the use of a whole-farm, multiperiod model. Linear programming was used to find the most profitable mix of forage species for an irrigated dairy farm in a warm temperate irrigation region of New South Wales, Australia. It was concluded that for a typical farmer facing the prevailing milk and purchased feed prices with average milk production per cow, the most profitable mix of species would include a large proportion of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and prairie grass (Bromus willdenowii). The result was robust to changes in seasonal milk pricing and a move from year-round to a more seasonal calving pattern.

The land-based livestock industries in Australia face particular challenges in assuring high animal welfare standards due to large land areas and stock numbers, climatic extremes and relatively low inputs in terms of manpower and infrastructure. These factors make a major contribution to welfare issues associated with nutrition, health, mustering and handling, and transportation. In addition, welfare is seriously compromised by the invasive procedures that are conducted on livestock, such as castration, dehorning, mulesing and tail-docking. At least partial solutions to welfare issues associated with nutrition, health, mustering and handling are available now and should be universally adopted. There are potential solutions available for castration and dehorning, which require some further research and development. Genetic technologies can also provide a solution for dehorning, mulesing and tail-docking. Inevitably, all livestock experience transportation, and research and development is required to determine optimal practices for Australian conditions in order to minimise the negative impacts on animal welfare.

There is substantial variation in bull breeding soundness evaluation procedures and reports in Australia; the situation is compounded by difficulties in interpretation and the validity of many reports. In an effort to overcome this, the scientific literature was reviewed [Fordyce G. In: Fordyce G, editor. Bull fertility: selection and management in Australia. Eight Mile Plains, Australia: Australian Cattle Vets; 2002] and the needs of stakeholders were considered in preparing a manual, Evaluating and Reporting Bull Fertility [Entwistle KW, Fordyce G. Evaluating and reporting bull fertility. Eight Mile Plains, Australia: Australian Cattle Vets; 2003.] that outlined standards for assessing and reporting bull breeding soundness. A new recording and reporting system, called Bull Reporter, is based on standards from this manual and groups bull fertility traits into five summary categories: Scrotum, Physical, Crush-side Semen, Sperm Morphology, and Serving. The client will generally select which categories they wish to have included in the evaluation to suit their specific purposes. While there is adequate room for comments, the veterinarian is not required to make an overall judgment of whether the bull has normal capacity to sire calves under natural mating management, but ensures the standards for each selected category are met. Professional, standardised, easy-to-read reports are produced either electronically [Entwistle KW, Fordyce G. Evaluating and reporting bull fertility. Eight Mile Plains, Australia: Australian Cattle Vets; 2003.] or manually. A bull owner or their agent signs the certificate to affirm that bulls have not undergone procedures to rectify faults which may have otherwise caused them to fail the standards. An accreditation system for assessing sperm morphology was established because of its demonstrated relationship with pregnancy rates and because of the difficulties in achieving consistent and accurate assessments among laboratories. It is considered that Bull Reporter is applicable to beef and dairy bulls across all levels of management, genotypes and environments throughout Australia, with substantial potential for application elsewhere in the world.

Should north Australia's extensive populations of feral animals be eradicated for conservation, or exploited as a rare opportunity for Indigenous enterprise in remote regions? We examine options for a herd of banteng, a cattle species endangered in its native Asian range but abundant in Garig Gunak Barlu National Park, an Aboriginal land managed jointly by traditional owners and a conservation agency in the Northern Territory of Australia. We reflect on the paradoxes that arise when trying to deal effectively with such complex and contested issues in natural resource management using decision-support tools (ecological-economic models), by identifying the trade-offs inherent in protecting values whilst also providing incomes for Indigenous landowners.

Field data from Australian Angus herds were used to investigate 2 methods of analyzing uncertain binary responses for success or failure at first insemination. A linear mixed model that included herd, year, and month of mating as fixed effects; unrelated service sire, additive animal, and residual as random effects; and linear and quadratic effects of age at mating as covariates was used to analyze binary data. An average gestation length (GL) derived from artificial insemination data was used to assign an insemination date to females mated to natural service sires. Females that deviated from this average GL led to uncertain binary responses. Two analyses were carried out: 1) a threshold model fitted to uncertain binary data, ignoring uncertainty (M1); and 2) a threshold model fitted to uncertain binary data, accounting for uncertainty via fuzzy logic classification (M2). There was practically no difference between point estimates obtained from M1 and M2 for service sire and herd variance; however, when uncertain binary data were analyzed ignoring uncertainty (M1), additive variance and heritability estimates were greater than with M2. Pearson correlations indicated that no major reranking would be expected for service sire effects and animal breeding values using M1 and M2. Given the results of the current study, a threshold model contemplating uncertainty is suggested for noisy binary data to avoid bias when estimating genetic parameters.

Objective: To compare performance of the Ovsynch program on reproductive performance between cycling and non cycling cows in seasonally-calving herds., Procedure: An Ovsynch mating program (100 mg Gonadorelin on day 1 and day 9, 500 mg of Cloprostenol on day 7 with fixed time artificial insemination on day 10) was administered to 3,559 cows from 14 herds in Australia and New Zealand. Cycling status before planned start of mating was determined. All cows were treated and artificial insemination continued for at least 25 days after fixed time artificial insemination. Pregnancy testing was performed 75 to 100 days after fixed time artificial insemination. Multivariable modelling examined the impact of the Ovsynch program and other risk factors upon reproductive performance., Results: Thirty percent of cows were classified as no visible oestrous (NVO). Odds of being NVO increased significantly for cows that were young, recently calved, and in low body condition. The fixed time artificial insemination conception rate was 35.7% and 33.2%, 21-day pregnancy rate was 54.5% and 48.4% and 42-day pregnancy rate was 69.7% and 62.6% for cycling and NVO cows respectively. Odds of pregnancy increased significantly for cows calved more than 40 days by planned start of mating, in greater body condition, and cycling, and there was a significant interaction between body condition and cycling status in both models. The return-to-service rates by 24-days were 67.6% and 55.9% and by the end of the AI period were 86.9% and 81.5% for cycling and NVO cows respectively. Odds of return to service increased significantly for cows in greater condition score in both models. Odds of return were increased for cycling cows in the 24-day multivariable model., Conclusion: The Ovsynch program may provide a useful treatment option for NVO cows within seasonally-calving pasture-based dairy herds.

Anecdotal observations of reduced hypocalcemia due to small reductions in the precalving dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) are widely reported in Australia and New Zealand. Diets offered to nonlactating, periparturient dairy cows in pasture-based dairy systems in southeastern Australia can vary in their cation-anion difference from 0 to +76 mEq/100 g. The effects of such a range in the DCAD on the health and production of cows, on a pasture-based diet, were examined in an indoor feeding experiment. Four groups of four cows were offered pasture-hay and freshly cut pasture, a periparturient diet typical of that associated with the grazing system in Australia and New Zealand. Varying levels of salt supplementation were used to alter the dietary cation-anion difference, which ranged from -12 to +69 mEq/100 g. Blood and urine pH and mineral concentrations and urine hydroxyproline were measured. The addition of anions to the diet, to produce a negative DCAD, resulted in a nonrespiratory systemic acidosis. With decreasing DCAD, the pH of blood and urine and the strong ion difference of urine decreased curvilinearly, blood bicarbonate decreased linearly and the urinary ratio of Ca to creatinine increased curvilinearly. Although systemic pH was not reduced at a DCAD of +16 mEq/100 g, urine Ca-to-creatinine ratio had begun to rise, probably indicating increased calcium absorption. The absorption and renal excretion of Mg increased with decreasing DCAD. No differences were observed in urine hydroxyproline concentrations and no significant differences in milk production were measured.

Diets offered to lactating dairy cows in the pasture-based dairy systems in southeastern Australia can vary in their dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) from 0 to +76 mEq/100 g. The effects of such a range of DCAD on the health and production of cows, on a predominantly pasture-based diet, were examined in an indoor feeding experiment. Four groups of five cows were offered a diet of 5 kg of barley and ad libitum pasture, which is a diet representative of what is offered to cows in early lactation in the region. The cows were supplemented twice daily, with varying levels of salt combinations to alter the DCAD, which ranged from +21 to +127 mEq/100 g. Although a reduction in DCAD to +21 mEq/100 g caused a nonrespiratory systemic acidosis, there was a threshold value, above which blood and urine pH did not appear affected, although the strong ion difference of blood and urine and the blood bicarbonate concentration increased linearly (P < 0.05, 0.001, and 0.01, respectively). A DCAD above +21 mEq/100 g linearly reduced dry matter intake (P < 0.1), average daily bodyweight gain (P < 0.05), and milk protein yield (P < 0.05) but did not have a significant effect on the concentration of fat, protein, or lactose in milk. Although data were consistent with a tendency for milk yield to decrease as dietary cation-anion differences increased, this trend was not statistically significant. Urine hydroxyproline to creatinine ratio increased (P < 0.001) as dietary cation-anion difference increased, possibly suggesting an increased rate of uterine involution. It is concluded that a range in the dietary cation-anion difference, above +52 mEq/100 g, may have deleterious effects on dry matter intake and milk production.

Serving capacity studies were conducted on Santa Gertrudis, 5/8 Brahman, Brahman and Belmont Red bulls at 10 sites. Modifications, such as providing prior sexual experience, using females in oestrus and comparing restrained with unrestrained females, were made to the standard Bos taurus serving capacity test in a series of experiments with Santa Gertrudis bulls. Providing sexual experience to virgin bulls prior to testing improved the number of serves and libido scores in a serving capacity test. In serving capacity tests that used restrained females, expressions of sexual behaviour of bulls were not improved by having females in oestrus compared with non-oestrus females. There were more sexual behaviours, particularly mounts, in serving capacity tests involving restrained rather than unrestrained females. Summary statistics were collated from over 1100 serving capacity tests, in the 2 months prior to mating, across the 10 sites. In serving capacity tests using restrained females, in bulls of the same age, there were more expressions of sexual behaviours (except interest) in Belmont Red than in Brahman or 5/8 Brahman bulls with Santa Gertrudis bulls intermediate. The percentage of bulls displaying serves tended to increase with age; 82, 83 and 86% of 2-, 3- and > or =4-year-old Belmont Red bulls, respectively, completed 1 or more serves. This compared with 50, 50 and 66% of 2-, 3- and > or =4-year-old Santa Gertrudis bulls and 31% of 2-year-old Brahman bulls. Between 2 and 9% of bulls did not display any sexual behaviour in serving capacity tests with restrained females. Across genotypes, there were few and inconsistent relationships between either mounts or serves and liveweight, condition score, scrotal circumference, testicular tone and sheath measurements. The exceptions were in 2-year-old Brahmans where mounts were negatively correlated (r=-0.61; P<0.05) with umbilicus thickness and in 3-year-old Santa Gertrudis bulls, where serves (r=-0.53; P<0.01) and mounts+serves (r=-0.49; P<0.01) were negatively correlated with navel score. Measures of sexual behaviour were unable to consistently predict calf output of bulls in multiple-sire mating groups in extensive pastoral conditions. The main value of the serving capacity test in these genotypes is to identify whether a bull is capable of natural service.

A systematic breeding soundness examination, including assessment of serving capacity was conducted on 5/8 Brahman, Brahman and Belmont Red bulls, most aged 2-4 years, at 12 different cattle properties across northern Australia. A subset of bulls (n=235) were subsequently mated in various groups, as multiple-sires, to cows and heifers at bull:female ratios of 2.5-6%. The number of calves sired by individual bulls (calf output) was determined by DNA typing for paternity. Overall, the incidence of physical abnormalities that were judged likely to result in reduced reproductive performance was low (5.6-12% of bulls). Measures of key physical traits scrotal circumference, sheath depth (vertical distance from ventral abdominal wall to preputial orifice), and sheath score were moderately to highly repeatable. Except in Belmont Red bulls, liveweight was positively correlated with scrotal circumference (r=0.36-0.78; P<0.01), and both traits increased with age. In 2-year-old Brahman bulls only, percent normal spermatozoa was correlated with scrotal circumference (r=0.34; P<0.05). However, 12 and 15% of Santa Gertrudis and Brahman bulls, respectively, with greater than or equal to the recommended threshold values for scrotal circumferences, had less than 50% morphologically normal spermatozoa. Size and conformation of the umbilicus was associated with conformation of the sheath, and influenced mating ability in 2-year-old Brahman and 3-year-old Santa Gertrudis bulls. In 2-year-old Brahman bulls umbilical cord thickness was positively related (r=0.36; P<0.05) to sheath depth, and negatively related (r=-0.65; P<0.05) to number of mounts and serves in a serving capacity test. In 3-year-old Santa Gertrudis bulls navel (external umbilical scar) score was negatively related to the number of serves (r=-0.53; P<0.01) in a serving capacity test. None of the physical traits measured were consistently included in the final regression model for calf output for each breed.

Detailed semen evaluations were carried out on approximately 363 Santa Gertrudis, 5/8 Brahman and Brahman bulls on 12 different properties across northern Australia, as part of systematic breeding soundness examinations. A subset of bulls (n=245) were subsequently mated in groups, to cows and heifers at bull:female ratios of 2.5-6.0%, with the paternity of resulting calves being determined by microsatellite DNA testing. Motility traits of semen and spermatozoa were moderately repeatable and correlated with each other, but were unrelated to calf output. The percentage of morphologically normal spermatozoa in ejaculates was moderately to highly repeatable (e.g. r=0.10-0.64). The most common morphological abnormalities seen were mid-piece abnormalities, in particular, distal mid-piece reflex associated with a cytoplasmic droplet. Semen quality, particularly percent normal spermatozoa, was consistently related to calf output. In general, bulls with <50% normal spermatozoa sired few calves while bulls with the highest calf outputs had >70% normal spermatozoa. The presence or absence of heparin binding proteins in semen did not influence calf output. Semen from 93% of tested bulls was positive for heparin binding proteins. These results confirm that examination of semen, in particular, evaluation of percent morphologically normal spermatozoa, should be included in the breeding soundness examination of bulls.

On 10 northern Australian properties, the number of calves sired (calf output) by individual bulls in multiple-sire matings was measured by DNA typing for paternity. There were 235 bulls (92 Santa Gertrudis, 25 5/8 Brahman and 119 Brahman) from 37 multiple-sire mating groups. Number of bulls in groups ranged from 2 to 25 and ages of bulls ranged from 2 to 5 years. Mating periods were for 3-12 months and bull mating percentages were 2.5-6%. In all, there were 4251 calves tested and the resolution of paternity ranged from 92.5 to 100% and averaged 97.7% across all sites. This included 9.9% of calves with no potential sires in any of the mating groups. Of the 235 bulls mated, 58% sired 10% or less calves in each of their respective mating groups with 6% not siring any calves. In contrast, 14% sired over 30% of the calves in each of the respective mating groups. When bulls were mated in groups of 8-24, the maximum percent of calves sired by individual bulls was 26+/-7% (mean+/-S.D.) with a range 11-36%. However, when bulls were mated in groups of 2-7, the maximum percent of calves sired by individual bulls was 59+/-19% with a range 24-94%. Calf output of bulls was moderately repeatable across years at four of five sites. Multiple regression models relating pre-mating measures of physical, seminal and behavioural traits to calf output were developed for the three breed groups. In all, only 138 of the 235 bulls were included in the models (40 Santa Gertrudis, 24 5/8 Brahman and 74 Brahman). Sheath and testicular traits, such as scrotal circumference and testicular tone, were generally not related to calf output, the exceptions being sheath depth in Brahman bulls which was negatively related (P<0.05) and scrotal circumference in 5/8 Brahmans which was positively related (P=0.08) to calf output. Dominance was only included in the 5/8 Brahman model but there was no significant relationship between dominance hierarchy and calf output. Semen motility was only related (P<0.05) to calf output in 5/8 Brahmans. However, measures of semen quality based on spermatozoa morphology were important contributors to calf output in the Santa Gertrudis and Brahman models where percent normal spermatozoa was positively related (P<0.01) to calf output. In Santa Gertrudis and Brahman bulls, measures of sexual behaviour in the serving capacity test were related to calf output. In Santa Gertrudis, these were for the number of displays of sexual interest (P<0.05), and mounts (P<0.01), but not number of serves, whilst in Brahman bulls, libido score was positively related to calf output (P<0.05). The models only explained 35-57% of the variation in calf output.

Calf output of bulls was derived using DNA typing for paternity following multiple-sire mating at two sites in northern Australia. At Swan's Lagoon Beef Cattle Research Station, 12, mixed-age, Brahman cross bulls were continuously mated with an average of 325 females in a 22km2 open-savannah paddock. Water was available in two troughs. Behaviour of the bulls and location of cows were monitored. At Kamilaroi Station, 2- to 2.5-year-old Brahman bulls were introduced to the study. Twenty-four bulls (HIGH%) were mated in an 84km2 paddock for 3.5 months to 411 heifers in 1995/1995 and for 4.5 months to 350 heifers and 320 first-lactation cows in 1995/1996. A second group of 10 bulls (LOW%) selected on reproductive soundness was mated concurrently in a neighbouring 60km2 paddock to 411 heifers in 1995/1995 and to 350 heifers and 298 first-lactation cows in 1995/1996. In each paddock in both years, 300-350 females were expected to cycle during mating. Both paddocks were flat and semi-forested and water was available only at troughs. At both sites, detailed physical and reproductive examinations of all bulls were conducted prior to and post-mating.Calf output of individual bulls was highly variable but repeatable (r=0.6-0.7) between years. Up to 90% of the 270-380 calves resulting from each mating were sired by between 6 and 8 bulls. Reducing from 3.7 to 2.8% bulls:females at Swan's Lagoon did not delay conceptions. At Kamilaroi, reproductively sound bulls achieved an estimated 5-6 conceptions per week over the peak mating period when sufficient cycling females were available. Differences in pregnancy rates between paddocks appeared due to differences in nutrition and it appeared that conceptions were not delayed with LOW% vs. HIGH% bulls. Variance between bulls in calf output was substantially lower when fewer bulls were used. Bull attrition occurred each year in the HIGH% paddock but not in the LOW% paddock. Calf output was unrelated to body condition of bulls. Seven of the 12 bulls in one 2-year period at Swan's Lagoon appeared to restrict their movement range to 250-750ha for 90-100% of the time. These ranges expanded when the bull:female ratio was reduced. Only one of the nine bulls remained within a 500ha home range for at least 85% of the time during peak mating in 1998 at 2.8% bulls:females. In previous years with 3.7% bulls:females, up to eight of the 12 bulls had remained within a 500ha home range for 85% of the time. Bull behaviour related to high calf output included restricted movement range, grazing with females at a majority of observations, stable social behaviour, and social dominance. These observations demonstrate that multiple-sire mating of reproductively sound Brahman and Brahman-derived bulls at 2.5% of cycling females will not jeopardise herd fertility under extensive management in northern Australia.

Profit was defined as a function of the genotype of animals and variables controlled by management. Alternative parameterizations of management variables were examined to compare the effect of controlling age at slaughter, weight at slaughter, or fat depth at slaughter. The various parameterizations are shown to result in equivalent economic weights for genetic variables, provided management variables are optimized for the current genotype. The implication is that economic weights and selection indexes can be conveniently calculated for age constant end points even though commercial production may involve weight or backfat depth constant slaughter points. An example of selection for profit in the feedlot phase of beef production is presented. Three genotype-management combinations were considered. Economic weights and subsequent selection index weights were shown to depend on both average genotypic means and management (feeding and marketing program) factors.

Genetic parameters, such as heritabilities and genetic correlations were estimated for milk yield, survival, workability, and type traits for Australian Holstein-Friesian and Jersey cattle. All analyses were performed using multivariate REML with a sire model. Heritabilities for lactation yield traits were moderate, ranging from .20 to .28, and heritabilities for mean test day deviations were approximately .40 higher. Heritabilities for survival (probability of surviving to the next lactation) were low, ranging from .02 to .08. Genetic correlations between survival scores were high, ranging from .37 to .98, in particular between adjacent survival scores (on average .91 and .97 for Holstein-Friesians and Jerseys). Heritabilities for stayabilities were larger, ranging from .03 to .22. On average, genetic correlations between stayabilities were very high, ranging from .66 to .99. For milking speed, temperament, and likeability, heritability estimates ranged from .18 (for likeability in Holstein-Friesians) to .29 (for milking speed in Jerseys). Undesirable scores for milking speed and temperament had negative genetic correlations with stayabilities (correlations approximately -.20). Heritabilities for type traits were all moderate (.11 to .42), and genetic correlations among type traits and between type traits and production traits were large. Phenotypic correlations between type traits and stayabilities were low. Generally, genetic correlations between type traits and stayabilities were low although the standard errors of those estimates were large.

Estimates of covariance components between scrotal circumference, serving capacity, days to calving, and yearling and final weight were obtained for Hereford, Angus, and Zebu cross cattle in temperate and tropical Australia. Analyses were carried out by REML employing a derivative-free algorithm and fitting bivariate animal models. Aspects of modeling and computational requirements related to the use of this method are discussed. Estimates of heritabilities agreed closely with those from univariate analyses, being low for female reproductive performance and moderate to high for male reproduction and growth. Estimates of genetic correlation between male and female fertility traits were low but favorable, being -.25, -.28, and -.41 between scrotal circumference and days to calving for Herefords, Angus, and Zebu crosses, respectively. Genetic correlations between male reproductive traits and weights ranged from .24 to .52 for the temperate breeds and were higher (.65 to .69) for Zebu crosses. Phenotypic correlations between scrotal circumference and weights were similar for all breeds, ranging from .32 to .47, whereas serving capacity and weights were phenotypically unrelated. Estimates of correlations between days to calving and weights were less consistent. Phenotypically, there was little association between the two traits. Genetic correlations for Zebu crosses were negative and low to moderate (-.36 to -.66) and estimates for Angus were close to zero.

A survey was carried out in North West Tasmania to compare the breeding performance of 2,068 cows in 27 dairy herds--15 herds calving in spring and 12 in autumn. The percentage of cows submitted to artificial insemination for the first time in the first 24 days of the mating period was 87% for the spring calving group and 75% for the autumn calving group. Figures for non-return-to-service rate over the subsequent 21 days were 72% and 55%, respectively. The difference in breeding performance associated with time of calving was not attributable to age, calving to mating interval or on cow condition or daily milk fat yield at 3 weeks (+/- 1 week) after the start of mating.
