3. A Typology of Familicide Perpetrators in Australia.

Abstract

The murder of family members is one of the most difficult crimes to understand. This study uses Shye's action systems framework combined with multivariate data analysis to test the hypothesis that different forms of familicide will reflect the four states an action system can take, namely: Integrative, Expressive, Conservative and Adaptive. A multidimensional scaling analysis (MDS) was performed on 54 crime scene variables describing 104 cases of intra-familial homicide. The analysis revealed four distinct modes of functioning, which provided tentative support for Shye's action system. Each of the four modes had distinct associations with perpetrator characteristics. The Expressive and Integrative modes were associated with Cluster B personality traits, and criminal and substance use histories. The Adaptive mode was associated with trauma histories, mood disorders, and personality disorder traits. The Conservative theme was associated with trauma histories and psychotic disorders. Abstract

This project looks at the intersection between gunshot damage to road signs and the use of geographic information systems (GIS) for forensic intelligence. The project has surveyed several distinct regions in Victoria Australia (residential, semi-rural and rural) in order to establish the level and distribution of gunshot damage to signs. The study assesses the correlation between population densities, land use and road type and the types of gunshot damage associated with road signs. The study includes a temporal aspect with the aid of backdated GIS image data and assessment is made on the potential benefits for crime scene information gathering. Further, a software tool has been established that enables photographic analysis of the gunshot impact points to be used to help determine the scale of damage associated with the signs in order to help establish the types of weapons used. This information is presented in the context of the typical registered guns in the community to correlate the key types of weapons used in this type of activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper examines the relationship between collective efficacy and the spatial distribution of crime and transportation routes. The paper provides an integration of environmental criminology theories (e.g., crime pattern theory, routine activities theory) with contemporary crime and place theories to understand how the spatial distribution of crime is mediated by access to transport and perceptions of collective efficacy. Survey data was gathered from 2859 residents across 82 Statistical Local Areas in Brisbane, Australia asking questions of perceptions of crime, disorder, collective efficacy, social capital as well as victimization experiences. Residents' addresses from the survey were geocoded and transportation variables (e.g., railway lines, train stations, bus stations) were gathered from a variety of sources. This paper reports the results of a spatial analysis of collective efficacy, neighbourhood disorder, and access to transportation variables.
