Stomatopods (Crustacea, Stomatopoda) are well studied for their aggressive behavior and unique visual system as well as their commercial importance in Asian and European countries. Like many crustaceans, stomatopods undergo indirect development, passing though several larval stages before reaching maturity. Adult stomatopods can be difficult to catch due to their inaccessible habitats and cryptic coloration. By sampling larvae from the planktonic community, less effort is required to obtain accurate measures of species richness within a region. Stomatopod larvae were collected between 2006 and 2015 from the waters around the Lizard Island reef platform in Eastern Australia. Cytochrome oxidase I (COI) mitochondrial DNA sequences were generated from each larval sample and compared to a database of COI sequences tied to adult specimens. Of the 20 species collected from Lizard Island as adults which have COI data available, 18 species were identified from larval sampling. One additional species identified from larval samples, Busquilla plantei, was previously unknown from Lizard Island. Nine larval OTUs were found not to match any published adult sequences. Sampling larval stomatopod populations provides a comparable picture of the adult population to benthic sampling methods and may include species richness beyond what is measurable by sampling adult populations.

The rare mantis shrimp genus Areosquilla is recorded from Australia for the first time based on nine specimens of A. indica (Hansen, 1926) collected from the Great Barrier Reef. Morphological variation beyond that observed in previous accounts is reported. The present record and other recent discoveries bring the Australian stomatopod fauna to 152 species and 68 genera.

We describe Halmyrapseudes gutui sp. nov. from a mangrove area on Lidee Island, southern Thailand. This species closely resembles H. cooperi, H. killaiyensis, and H. thaumastocheles, but differs in having the lacinia mobilis with three teeth, and the pereopod 1 carpus with 0,1 or 1,1 ventral simple setae proximal to each spiniform seta. We redescribed and synonymized two species of questionable affiliation, Apseudes cooperi and A. digitalis, placing them in Halmyrapseudes, and partly redescribed Halmyrapseudes killaiyensis. Halmyrapseudes and Pseudohalmyrapseudes have disjunct distributions. Halmyrapseudes is similar in distribution to two freshwater fish taxa whose distributions are considered to reflect the breakup of Gondwana and subsequent continental drift. Pseudohalmyrapseudes occurs around Australia, and its distribution seems to be separated from that of Halmyrapseudes by Wallace's Line or Huxley's Line, which are distributional barriers for both terrestrial organisms and an amphidromous shrimp. The adjacent distributions and morphological similarities suggest that Halmyrapseudes and Pseudohalmyrapseudes are sister taxa.

Australia has had two species of Lynceus, L. macleayanus (King, 1855) and L. tatei (Brady, 1886) reported to date, both poorly described and without types, and supposedly both widely distributed. This study establishes neotypes and redescribes each according to modern standards. The present distribution of each is severely restricted by the destruction of temporary aquatic habitats, both in cities and in the country and also misunderstood by the lack of recent collecting in some outlying areas. Detailed study of male first thoracopods, together with an understanding of the form of the head and rostrum, antenna 2 spinal patterns, carapace shape, and the females' lamina abdominalis, most of which are discontinuously variable, has resulted in the delineation of four more species: L. baylyi sp. nov. in desert rockholes of Western Australia; L magdaleanae sp. nov. mainly in deep gnammas of the WA Wheatbelt and Goldfields but also extending into NT, Qld and SA; L. susanneae sp. nov. of rockholes on the Nullarbor Plain, WA; and L. argillaphilus sp. nov. of the coastal Pilbara, WA. Identification keys are provided for all six species, both males and females.

This paper presents the descriptions of two new genera and four new metapseudid species collected from the coral reefs of Ningaloo and Heron Island in north-western and eastern Australia, respectively. Two of the species, Curtipleon chadi n. sp., and Creefs heronum n. gen. n. sp. are members of the subfamily Synapseudinae, one, Msangia mussida n. sp. is a member of the subfamily Msangiinae and one Bamberus jinigudirus n. gen. n. sp. is a member of the subfamily Chondropodinae. With the exception of M mussida that was found on live coral, all of the species were associated with dead corals.

Alima pacifica and A. orientalis are stomatopods commonly found at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia. There are currently no descriptions that link the larvae to the adult morphotype despite the frequent occurrence of the last larval stage of these two species. We used DNA barcoding of the cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene to link the last stage larvae of A. pacifica and A. orientalis to the respective adult morphotype. Detailed morphological descriptions of the late larva of each species are provided and compared to other described last-stage Alima larvae. These data support previous studies that suggest paraphyly of the genus Alima.

The crustacean family Parabathynellidae is an ancient and significant faunal component of subterranean ecosystems. Molecular data were generated in order to examine phylogenetic relationships amongst Australian genera and assess the species diversity of this group within Australia. We also used the resultant phylogenetic framework, in combination with an ancestral state reconstruction (ASR) analysis, to explore the evolution of two key morphological characters (number of segments of the first and second antennae), previously used to define genera, and assess the oligomerization principle (i.e. serial appendage reduction over time), which is commonly invoked in crustacean systematics. The ASR approach also allowed an assessment of whether there has been convergent evolution of appendage numbers during the evolution of Australian parabathynellids. Sequence data from the mtDNA COI and nDNA 18S rRNA genes were obtained from 32 parabathynellid species (100% of described genera and ~25% of described species) from key groundwater regions across Australia. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that species of each known genus, defined by traditional morphological methods, were monophyletic, suggesting that the commonly used generic characters are robust for defining distinct evolutionary lineages. Additionally, ancestral state reconstruction analysis provided evidence for multiple cases of convergent evolution for the two morphological characters evaluated, suggesting that caution needs to be shown when using these characters for elucidating phylogenetic relationships, particularly when there are few morphological characters available for reconstructing relationships. The ancestral state analysis contradicted the conventional view of parabathynellid evolution, which assumes that more simplified taxa (i.e. those with fewer-segmented appendages and setae) are derived and more complex taxa are primitive., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Inc. Taxonomy and phylogeny within the branchiopod taxon Spinicaudata are still controversial. We analyzed sequences of three gene fragments (28S rRNA, 16S rRNA and COI) from up to 41 species of the Cyzicidae, Limnadiidae and Leptestheriidae to infer their phylogenetic relationships, focusing in particular on species from Australia and their phylogenetic position within Spinicaudata. Four major monophyletic lineages could be distinguished: Limnadiidae, Leptestheriidae, Eocyzicus and all Cyzicidae except Eocyzicus. A clear genetic distinction between Australian and non-Australian Cyzicidae is well supported (i.e. Caenestheria and Caenestheriella species from Australia and Caenestheriella and Cyzicus species from Europe, Asia and North America). In the genera Eocyzicus and Eulimnadia the Australian species were closely related to those from other continents. The species of the Australian endemic genus Limnadopsis and Australian Limnadia species form a monophylum. This suggests that the origin of Limnadopsis lies in Australia and that Limnadia is not monophyletic.

Yellowtail kingfish, Seriola lalandi support significant commercial and recreational fisheries as well as aquaculture operations throughout the world. Metazoan parasite infections of S. lalandi are of considerable economic and ecological importance, yet very little is known about wild parasite assemblages. S. lalandi were collected from the east coast and south coast of Australia and examined for metazoan parasites. Forty-three parasite taxa were identified, including 26 new host records. Four of the parasite species recovered have been previously associated with disease or mortality in Seriola aquaculture. Comparisons are made between ectoparasite and endoparasite prevalence and intensity of S. lalandi from New South Wales and Victoria. S. lalandi sampled from the east coast of Australia shared ectoparasites previously documented from this species in New Zealand, providing support that S. lalandi in the Tasman Sea comprise a single stock. Based on previously used criteria to evaluate the suitability of parasites as biological tags, the monogenean Paramicrocotyloides reticularis Rohde and the copepod Parabrachiella seriolae Yamaguti and Yamasu may be potentially useful for stock discrimination.

Samples from 83 populations of salt lake Ostracods belonging to the genus Mytilocypris were collected from 74 saline lakes and ponds in the semi-arid regions of Australia. These populations were examined for variation at six polymorphic enzyme loci to diagnose breeding systems and to measure population structure, to investigate relative levels of gene flow in species with differing distributions and hence different presumed dispersal capabilities. Despite the occurrence of some populations in disjunct, peripheral, and recent ephemeral habitats, all populations of each species were found to reproduce sexually. Gene flow does occur on a local basis and appears to be facilitated by occupation in the same drainage basin for some species. There was considerable gene pool fragmentation among peripheral populations of four of the five species. Only one species, M. mytiloides, was relatively homogeneous across its range. It may be that gene flow is non-existent into peripheral populations because of poor dispersal abilities, or it may not be frequent enough to overcome local selective pressures. Regardless of these possibilities, the observed gene pool fragmentation has implications for allopatric speciation.

Four new Ergasilus species are described from five host species of grey mullet, family Mugilidae, held in the fish collections of The Natural History Museum, London. Ergasilus extensus n. sp. was found on Myxus petardi (Castelnau) from Australia, E. sittangenesis n. sp. on Sicamugil hamiltoni (Day) from Burma, E. piriformis n. sp. on Sicamugil cascasia (Hamilton Buchanan) from India, and E. ecuadorensis n. sp. on Mugil curema Valenciennes and M. hospes Jordan & Culver from Ecuador. New records of E. cyanopictus Caravalho, E. magnicornis Yin, E. orientalis Yamaguti and E. rostralis Ho, Jayarajian & Radhakrishnan on grey mullet are also given.

The paper contains description and drawings of the new parasitic isopod Lironeca neocyttus sp. n. and a brief note about L. raynaudii Milne Edwards, 1840, found in the region of Australia and New Zealand.
