Translocated populations must adapt to their new environment to survive. A key aspect of survival for insects is the maintenance of water balance. It is thought that insects can adapt to dry environments by adjusting their cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) profile to reduce water loss, though there is limited empirical support for this, and studies generally focus on other roles of CHCs, such as chemical communication. We tested for phenotypic adaptation in introduced populations of the Mediterranean dung beetle Onthophagus taurus, which have become established along a climatic gradient from dry northern to wet southern locations in southwestern Australia. We compared CHC profiles and desiccation resistance between northern and southern populations of the species. To quantify desiccation resistance, we measured both the rate of weight loss and time until death in beetles incubated at 35 °C. We tested for associations between these measures of desiccation resistance and CHC profiles, which were obtained through gas chromatography mass spectrometry. The abundance of CHCs was positively associated with desiccation resistance, and individuals that underwent the desiccation treatment produced a greater quantity of several CHC compounds indicating their ability to plastically adjust their CHC profile in response to desiccation stress. However, northern populations did not produce more CHCs than southern populations, and southern populations were better able to tolerate desiccation. Our results suggest that CHCs are an important component of desiccation resistance in O. taurus. However, the lack of evidence for local adaptation to the drier northern climate suggests there may be constraints to increasing desiccation resistance, and demonstrates the importance of considering local environmental conditions before translocating populations to new locations. Abstract We characterized the population genetic structure of the Australian social spider Diaea ergandros using polymorphic allozyme markers. Our main objectives were to understand the social organization of D. ergandros and discern patterns of gene flow across distantly separated geographical areas. Spiders were sampled from nests located within 100 m wide locales, which were distributed within larger 50 km wide regions. Our results indicated that nestmates could have been produced by a single mother and father in 88.9% of D. ergandros nests. The remainder of nests contained spiders that were probably produced by polyandrous females or were immigrants from foreign nests. Nestmate relatedness was relatively high (r = 0.44) and did not differ significantly between the sexes or among juvenile, subadult and adult life stages. We also discovered that D. ergandros populations were highly structured, with significant differentiation detected among locales (F LR = 0.23) and regions (F RT = 0.081). Spiders within locales were also substantially inbred (F IL = 0.15). Overall, our data show that significant population subdivision exists in D. ergandros populations, and we suggest that the poor dispersal ability of Diaea spiders can account for the observed genetic structure. Abstract: Cables sheathed with medium density polyethylene or polyamide were exposed together with highly palatable bait wood to termite faunas in south-eastern and northern Australia, Thailand and southern USA using three methods: below-ground exposure, samples buried horizontally at a depth of 15–30 cm; graveyard method, samples inserted vertically 25 cm deep into the ground; ground contact method, samples placed horizontally on the ground surface, covered with soil and a plastic sheet. Samples were inspected for damage and bait wood replaced annually for six years. No polyamide sample was attacked. Damage to polyethylene was most severe at the Australian sites (across all methods) and in the graveyard method (across all sites), although in Australia in the below-ground method samples experienced greatest damage. Exposing samples together with bait wood within containers for one year, and replenishing bait wood up to three times, i.e. an ‘accelerated’ test method, compared to the standard procedure of providing new bait wood only once a year, resulted in only very limited damage to cables at Asian sites (Macrotermitinae, Coptotermes spp., Malaysia; Coptotermes formosanus, Japan), matching the earlier results for Thailand. But 73% of samples were destroyed by Coptotermes acinaciformis in northern Australia. Since 1968, the Australian Dung Beetle Project has carried out field releases of 43 deliberately introduced dung beetle species for the biological control of livestock dung and dung-breeding pests. Of these, 23 species are known to have become established. For most of these species, sufficient time has elapsed for population expansion to fill the extent of their potential geographic range through both natural and human-assisted dispersal. Consequently, over the last 20 years, extensive efforts have been made to quantify the current distribution of these introduced dung beetles, as well as the seasonal and spatial variation in their activity levels. Much of these data and their associated metadata have remained unpublished, and they have not previously been synthesized into a cohesive dataset. Here, we collate and report data from the three largest dung beetle monitoring projects from 2001 to 2022. Together, these projects encompass data collected from across Australia, and include records for all 23 species of established dung beetles introduced for biocontrol purposes. In total, these data include 22,718 presence records and 213,538 absence records collected during 10,272 sampling events at 546 locations. Most presence records (97%) include abundance data. In total, 1,752,807 dung beetles were identified as part of these data. The distributional occurrence and abundance data can be used to explore questions such as factors influencing dung beetle species distributions, dung beetle biocontrol, and insect-mediated ecosystem services. In the past, when scientists encountered and studied 'new' environmental phenomena, they rarely considered the existing knowledge of First Peoples (also known as Indigenous or Aboriginal people). The scientific debate over the regularly spaced bare patches (so-called fairy circles) in arid grasslands of Australian deserts is a case in point. Previous researchers used remote sensing, numerical modelling, aerial images and field observations to propose that fairy circles arise from plant self-organization. Here we present Australian Aboriginal art and narratives, and soil excavation data, that suggest these regularly spaced, bare and hard circles in grasslands are pavement nests occupied by Drepanotermes harvester termites. These circles, called linyji (Manyjilyjarra language) or mingkirri (Warlpiri language), have been used by Aboriginal people in their food economies and for other domestic and sacred purposes across generations. Knowledge of the linyji has been encoded in demonstration and oral transmission, ritual art and ceremony and other media. While the exact origins of the bare circles are unclear, being buried in deep time and Jukurrpa, termites need to be incorporated as key players in a larger system of interactions between soil, water and grass. Ecologically transformative feedbacks across millennia of land use and manipulation by Aboriginal people must be accounted for. Termites sense tiny substrate-borne vibrations through subgenual organs (SGOs) located within their legs' tibiae. Little is known about the SGOs' structure and physical properties. We applied high-resolution (voxel size 0.45 μm) micro-computed tomography (μCT) to Australian termites, Coptotermes lacteus and Nasutitermes exitiosus (Hill) to test two staining techniques. We compared the effectiveness of a single stain of Lugol's iodine solution (LS) to LS followed by Phosphotungstic acid (PTA) solutions (1% and 2%). We then present results of a soldier of Nasutitermes exitiosus combining μCT with LS + 2%PTS stains and scanning electron microscopy to exemplify the visualisation of their SGOs. The termite's SGO due to its approximately oval shape was shown to have a maximum diameter of 60 μm and a minimum of 48 μm, covering 60 ± 4% of the leg's cross-section and 90.4 ± 5% of the residual haemolymph channel. Additionally, the leg and residual haemolymph channel cross-sectional area decreased around the SGO by 33% and 73%, respectively. We hypothesise that this change in cross-sectional area amplifies the vibrations for the SGO.
