Purpose: This paper aims to explore Indonesian students' perceptions of student exchanges or studies abroad regarding cultural intelligence's influence on innovative behavior through interpersonal trust. Design/methodology/approach: This study has used a quantitative research approach. Data analysis uses an approach structural equation modeling-partial least squares (SEM-PLS) supported by program computer software Smart-PLS 3.0. An online questionnaire was distributed to 224 respondents, but only 214 were qualified. In this study, the respondent is Indonesian students who have been completed or are currently conducting student exchanges or studying abroad in the Asia and Australia region. Findings: This pilot study reveals that high cultural intelligence students positively affect their individuals' innovative behavior. Moreover, interpersonal trust levels would mediate the influence of cultural intelligence on individual innovative behavior students. These results indicate that most Indonesian citizen students who took part in student exchanges or studying abroad had high cultural intelligence. Originality/value: This study focused on influence cultural intelligence on individuals' innovative behavior, which is referred to as cross-cultural interaction. Also, this study focused on Indonesian citizen students who took part in student exchanges or studying abroad. This kind of research has not been thoroughly or even not been discussed in academic research. Therefore, it was necessary to put this issue into a science education and management science.

This study examined the increase in the rate of suicide by hanging and an apparently simultaneous decrease in the rate of suicide by firearm as hypothetical evidence that Australian males have substituted one method of suicide for another. Objective: This study aimed to investigate COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy, acceptance, and unmet informational needs in a cancer population during the first phase of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination rollout in Australia. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in a large tertiary hospital in Queensland, Australia, between 10 May and 31 July 2021. The survey assessed health beliefs, experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic, COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and informational needs. Results: COVID-19 was perceived to be a significant threat to both physical and mental health. While 57.9% (n = 110) of respondents believed the COVID-19 vaccines were safe and 64.2% (n = 122) believed they were effective, more than half (52.6%; n = 100) agreed that they worried about vaccine side effects. Most respondents (84.2%; n = 160) planned to receive the COVID-19 vaccine; however, feelings of hesitancy remained. There was a statistically significant association between those aged under 60 years (P = 0.003), those with previous vaccine hesitancy (P = 0.000), those who felt they had not received adequate information (P = 0.000) and vaccine hesitancy. Requested information pertained to interactions with cancer treatments, those with a history of blood clotting and information for those undergoing bone marrow transplantation. Conclusions: There is a need for tailored COVID-19 vaccine communication that is responsive to the concerns of people with cancer. This will be beneficial during current and future vaccination rollouts. What is known about topic? People with cancer are a COVID-19 vaccine priority group, as they are at increased risk of morbidity and mortality from this disease. There is currently a dearth of information regarding COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy, acceptance, or informational needs for this population. What does this paper add? This paper has shown that although vaccine refusal rates were low in this population, feelings of hesitancy remained. Women, those in younger age categories, those with previous vaccine hesitancy and those who felt they had not received adequate information had stronger vaccine hesitancy and higher refusal rates. What are the implications for practitioners? There is a need for tailored information and open communication regarding COVID-19 vaccines and people with cancer. Background: In recent years, pharmacists in Australia have been able to expand their scope to include the provision of a range of services. Although evidence has demonstrated the benefits of pharmacist-managed TDM services, recent studies have shown that these services are not prominent within Australia and that the current TDM workflow may not be optimal. Methods: An interventional pilot study was conducted of a pharmacist-managed TDM program for vancomycin at a tertiary hospital in Australia. Results: In total, 15 pharmacists participated in the program. They performed 50.5% of the medication-related pathology over the intervention period. Pharmacist involvement in the TDM process was more likely to lead to appropriate TDM sample collection (OR 87.1; 95% CI = 11.5, 661.1) and to an appropriate dose adjustment (OR 19.1; 95% CI = 1.7, 213.5). Pharmacists demonstrated increased confidence after the education and credentialling package was provided. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that a credentialling package for pharmacists can improve knowledge, skills, and confidence around the provision of pharmacist-managed TDM services for vancomycin. This may lead to the evolution of different roles and workflows enabling pharmacists to contribute more efficiently to improving medication safety and use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: With the reduction in access to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing and changes in testing guidelines in Australia, a reduced number of people are seeking testing for coronavirus disease (COVID-19), limiting the opportunity to monitor disease transmission. Knowledge of community transmission of COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses is essential to better predict subsequent surges in cases during the pandemic to alert health services, protect vulnerable populations and enhance public health measures. We describe a methodology for a testing-based sentinel surveillance program to monitor disease in the community for early signal detection of SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory viruses. Methods/design: A longitudinal active testing-based sentinel surveillance program for respiratory viruses (including SARS-CoV-2, influenza A, influenza B and Respiratory Syncytial Virus) will be implemented in some regions of Queensland. Adults will be eligible for enrolment if they are part of specific community groups at increased risk of exposure and have not had a COVID-19 infection in the last 13 weeks. Recruitment via workplaces will occur in-person, via email and through online advertisement. Asymptomatic participants will be tested via PCR for SARS-CoV-2 infection by weekly self-collected nasal swabs. In addition, symptomatic participants will be asked to seek SARS-CoV-2 and additional respiratory virus PCR testing at nominated COVID-19 testing sites. SARS-CoV-2 and respiratory virus prevalence data will be analysed weekly and at the end of the study period. Discussion: Once implemented, this surveillance program will determine the weekly prevalence of COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses in the broader community by testing a representative sample of adults, with an aim to detect early changes in the baseline positivity rate. This information is essential to define the epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 in the community in near-real time to inform public health control measures and prepare health services and other stakeholders for a rise in service demand. Pharmacist-managed therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) services have demonstrated positive outcomes in the literature, including reduced duration of therapy and decreased incidence of the adverse effects of drug therapy. Although the evidence has demonstrated the benefits of these TDM services, this has predominately been within international healthcare systems. The extent to which pharmacist-managed TDM services exist within Australia, and the roles and responsibilities of the pharmacists involved compared to their counterparts in other countries, remains largely unknown. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted evaluating pharmacist-managed TDM programs within Australian hospital and healthcare settings. Pharmacist perceptions were also explored about the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and barriers associated with implementing a pharmacist-managed TDM service. A total of 92 surveys were returned, which represents a response rate of 38%. Pharmacist-managed TDM programs were present in 15% of respondents. It is only in the minority of hospitals where there is a pharmacist-managed service, with pharmacists involved in recommending pathology and medication doses. The programs highlighted improved patient outcomes but had difficulty maintaining the educational packages and training. For hospitals without a service, a lack of funding and time were highlighted as barriers. Based on the findings of this survey, there is minimal evidence of pharmacist-managed TDM models within Australian hospital and health services. A standardized national approach to pharmacist-managed TDM services and recognition of this specialist area for pharmacists could be a potential solution to this. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nowadays, STEM education plays an essential role in the economic growth and competitiveness of nations. This systematic review was aimed to reveal research trends in STEM education over the last 10 years. A total of 336 studies published in the Journal of Science Education and Technology, Research in Science Education, Journal of Science Teacher Education, International Journal of Science Education, Journal of Research in Science Teaching, and Science Education were selected for analysis. The time span was limited to the period between 2011 to late 2020. All sample papers were then examined to capture the latest research trends and status regarding STEM education that included the number of papers by year, research types, countries' rank, and the number of authors. To collect data, the formula proposed by Howard et al. [1] was employed to determine the most productive countries in terms of STEM education scholarships. Findings revealed that STEM education has garnered greater attention and it grew rapidly within this period. The most frequent research type used in STEM education were quantitative studies. In addition, the US, Australia, and the Netherlands were the most productive countries in STEM education research. During these ten years, most papers published in selected journals were written by three authors. This indicates that STEM education is an attractive topic to explore collaboratively by researchers and educators around the world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

What is known and objective: Australian hospitals have undergone a transformation with both a review and expansion of traditional roles of healthcare professionals and the implementation of an ieMR. The implementation of an ieMR brings large scale organizational change within the health system especially for staff with direct patient contact. This is changing the future of healthcare and the roles of healthcare professionals. There is minimal research on the impact of these electronic systems on the people and processes required to realise the improvements in patient care such as therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) and the role of the pharmacist within the TDM process. The literature has discussed the use of computerised programs to assist with the interpretation of results and calculating of doses but the impact of an ieMR on the TDM process has not been discussed. This study undertook a retrospective analysis at an Australian tertiary hospital to investigate the impact of a digital hospital system on TDM within the facility. Methods: A 2‐year retrospective audit was conducted on TDM at an Australian Tertiary Hospital. The periods were 2016 (a paper‐based hospital) and 2018 (ieMR). Patients were identified using the pathology database. Patients were excluded if under the age of 18, in an outpatient setting or the emergency department. Progress notes, medication charts, ieMR and other relevant pathology were reviewed. They were assessed for appropriateness of the timing of collection, compliance to recommended TDM guidelines, and pharmacist documentation. Results and Discussion: A total of 2926 observations were included in the analysis. There was as similar percentage of appropriately collected samples between the paper‐based system (2016) and the digital hospital system (2018) with 59% and 58% respectively. Results of logistic regression analysis models show the effect of year was not significant with regards to TDM for either a sample being appropriate or the dose adjustment being appropriate. Samples for TDM were more likely to be appropriate if the pharmacist had documented advice but less likely with regards to appropriate dose adjustment. This study considered the effect of introducing a hospital wide digital system on TDM processes. Overall, the results indicate no difference between the paper‐based system and ieMR for appropriate samples and doses adjustments. What is new and conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first study of this kind looking at the impact of a digital hospital system on TDM. The introduction of a digital hospital system does not appear to have made improvement on the effective use of TDM. Inappropriate sampling as seen in this study can lead to ineffective clinical management of patients, inefficient use of time, and waste of financial resources. Landscape topography and the mobility of individuals will have fundamental impacts on a species' population structure, for example by enhancing or reducing gene flow and therefore influencing the effective size and genetic diversity of the population. However, social organization will also influence population genetic structure. For example, species that live and breed in cooperative groups may experience high levels of inbreeding and strong genetic drift. The western pebble‐mound mouse (Pseudomys chapmani), which occupies a highly heterogeneous, semi‐arid landscape in Australia, is an enigmatic social mammal that has the intriguing behaviour of working cooperatively in groups to build permanent pebble mounds above a subterranean burrow system. Here, we used both nuclear (microsatellite) and mitochondrial (mtDNA) markers to analyse the range‐wide population structure of western pebble‐mound mice sourced from multiple social groups. We observed high levels of genetic diversity at the broad scale, very weak genetic differentiation at a finer scale and low levels of inbreeding. Our genetic analyses suggest that the western pebble‐mound mouse population is both panmictic and highly viable. We conclude that high genetic connectivity across the complex landscape is a consequence of the species' ability to permeate their environment, which may be enhanced by "boom‐bust" population dynamics driven by the semi‐arid climate. More broadly, our results highlight the importance of sampling strategies to infer social structure and demonstrate that sociality is an important component of population genetic structure. Multiple mating is a common reproductive strategy among mammals, and rodents living in communal, mixed sex social groups are predisposed to a polygamous existence. The sandy inland mouse is a naturally polyandrous species that occurs across most of Australia's arid region. Females typically have greater reproductive restrictions compared with males and are therefore expected to acquire substantial fitness benefits from copulating with more than one male. Here, I show that the reproductive output of female sandy inland mice did not differ between females mated monandrously (single male) or polyandrously (two males). Paternity data obtained from the polyandrous litters revealed that in most cases, there was a first male-to-mate advantage. I discuss this result in relation to the chastity enforcement hypothesis for the evolution of the copulatory plug. Finally, I compared ejaculate traits of competing males and found that the paternity loss of males that mated first was attributable to their own sperm density and sperm quality, and not to that of their rivals. The sperm data also revealed that second males gained greater paternity representation when sperm velocities and motilities were higher in first-mated males. This investigation indicates that mating position is a critical determinant of male fitness in mammalian sperm competition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background This study used household survey data on the prevalence of child, parent and family variables to establish potential targets for a population-level intervention to strengthen parenting skills in the community. The goals of the intervention include decreasing child conduct problems, increasing parental self-efficacy, use of positive parenting strategies, decreasing coercive parenting and increasing help-seeking, social support and participation in positive parenting programmes. Methods A total of 4010 parents with a child under the age of 12 years completed a statewide telephone survey on parenting. Results One in three parents reported that their child had a behavioural or emotional problem in the previous 6 months. Furthermore, 9% of children aged 2–12 years meet criteria for oppositional defiant disorder. Parents who reported their child's behaviour to be difficult were more likely to perceive parenting as a negative experience (i.e. demanding, stressful and depressing). Parents with greatest difficulties were mothers without partners and who had low levels of confidence in their parenting roles. About 20% of parents reported being stressed and 5% reported being depressed in the 2 weeks prior to the survey. Parents with personal adjustment problems had lower levels of parenting confidence and their child was more difficult to manage. Only one in four parents had participated in a parent education programme. Conclusions Implications for the setting of population-level goals and targets for strengthening parenting skills are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Melanoma is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and incidence is increasing. Survival after treatment is inversely related to the thickness of the tumour at diagnosis. Population screening has the potential to reduce mortality but there is no conclusive evidence of benefit. Such evidence can come best from a randomised trial. Here we describe the design of a community based randomised trial of a population screening programme for melanoma in Queensland, Australia and early results of the first phase of the trial. Methods: A total of 44 communities (aggregate population 560 000 adults aged 30 years or more) will be randomised to receive either a community based screening programme for 3 years or normal practice. The screening programme promotes thorough skin self examination and whole body skin examination by a doctor and provides open access skin cancer screening clinics. In its first phase, the trial is underway in nine intervention and nine control communities. The primary outcome measure is mortality from melanoma during 15 years of follow up. Results: The first phase of the trial has shown the feasibility of implementing a population skin screening programme including regular skin cancer screening clinics, and has shown the strong support of communities and doctors for the programme. There has been a significant 2.5-fold increase in participation in screening in the intervention communities in this first phase after the first 12 months of the trial and no significant increase in participation in screening in control communities during this period. Conclusions: The design of a community based randomised trial of screening for melanoma has been successfully peer reviewed and the intervention has been shown to be feasible in practice. This randomised trial may be one of the last opportunities to develop the evidence required for public health recommendations for population screening for melanoma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climate change is generating an intensification of extreme environmental conditions, including frequent and severe droughts [ 1 ] that have been associated with increased social conflict in vertebrates [ 2–4 ], including humans [ 5 ]. Yet, fluctuating climatic conditions have been shown to also promote cooperative behavior and the formation of vertebrate societies over both ecological and evolutionary timescales [ 6 ]. Determining when climatic uncertainty breeds social discord or promotes cooperative living (or both) is fundamental to predicting how species will respond to anthropogenic climate change. In light of this, our limited understanding of the order of evolutionary events—that is, whether harsh environments drive the evolution of sociality [ 6 ] or, alternatively, whether sociality facilitates the invasion of harsh environments [ 7 ]—and of how cooperation and conflict coevolve in response to environmental fluctuation represent critical gaps in knowledge. Here, we perform comparative phylogenetic analyses on Australian rodents (Muridae: Hydromyini) and show that sociality evolves only under harsh conditions of low rainfall and high temperature variability and never under relatively benign conditions. Further, we demonstrate that the requirement to cooperate under harsh climatic conditions generates social competition for reproduction within groups (reflected in the degree of sexual dimorphism in traits associated with intrasexual competition [ 8 ]), which in turn shapes the evolution of body size dimorphism. Young drivers aged 17–25 years are over-represented in road crashes, with young males being nearly three times more likely to be involved in a road crash than females. In Australia, young drivers are also more likely to use their mobile phone while driving, with distraction from such use representing a major contributing factor to crashes. This study examined high school students’ responses to a school-based road safety program, namely, the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland’s (RACQ) Docudrama Program. Two theoretical frameworks underpinned the investigation, the Extended Parallel Process Model (EPPM) and an extended Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB). These frameworks assisted in the identification of key constructs that may help to explain how the program influences young people’s intentions to speak up to a driver engaging in a risky behaviour; specifically, talking on their mobile phone while driving. A between-groups design compared responses from students exposed to the program (i.e., the Intervention group) with those of students yet to be exposed (i.e., the Control group). Overall, the findings indicated that students who experienced the program reported greater intentions to speak up, as a passenger, to a friend who was using their mobile phone while driving. The EPPM-based results highlighted that gender influences the program’s effects and that a focus on the social threat of receiving social disapproval for risky driving may be important for increasing the persuasiveness of the program for young males. The results in relation to the key TPB constructs identified anticipated regret and perceived behavioural control as important predictors of passenger intentions to speak up. Although the results provided support for the beneficial effects of program exposure, the implications of the research are discussed in terms of some potential modifications which may enhance the program’s persuasive effects. Male-male competition after mating (sperm competition) favours adaptations in male traits, such as elevated sperm numbers facilitated by larger testes. Ultimately, patterns of female distribution will affect the strength of sperm competition by dictating the extent to which males are able to prevent female remating. Despite this, our understanding of how the spatial and temporal distributions of mating opportunities have shaped the evolutionary course of sperm competition is limited. Here, we use phylogenetic comparative methods to explore interspecific variation in testes size in relation to patterns of female distribution in Australian rodents. We find that as mating season length (temporal distribution of females) increases, testes size decreases, which is consistent with the idea that it is difficult for males to prevent females from remating when overlap among oestrous females is temporally concentrated. Additionally, we find that social species (spatially clustered) have smaller testes than non-social species (spatially dispersed). This result suggests that males may be effective in monopolizing reproduction within social groups, which leads to reduced levels of sperm competition relative to non-social species where free-ranging females cannot be controlled. Overall, our results show that patterns of female distribution, in both space and time, can influence the strength of post-mating sexual selection among species.

Mortality rates from all causes in Maoris in New Zealand and Native Americans have fallen substantially since the early 1970s. Comparable mortality rates for Australian Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders in 1990-1994 were at or above the rates observed 20 years ago in Maoris and Native Americans, being 1.9 times the rate in Maoris, 2.4 times the rate in Native Americans, and 3.2 times the rate for all Australians. Circulatory diseases, respiratory diseases, injuries and endocrine diseases (mostly diabetes) are responsible for almost 70% of these excess deaths. Mortality rate trends in indigenous populations in other countries suggest the feasibility of substantial and rapid reductions in mortality rates of Australia's indigenous people.

Data have been obtained from a total population study of diagnosed Down's syndrome cases born in Queensland between 1976 and 1985. Survival curves show a survival rate to one year of 87.4% and no significant differences in such patterns over the two five year periods of the study. Survival curves comparing maternal age at birth, sex of the infant, and locality of birth also indicate that early death is unrelated to any of these factors. Congenital heart disease and respiratory infection are the most common causes of infant death.
