The goal of this study was to investigate how extreme hydraulic loading influences hydraulic pathways, and thus failure potential, of two soil absorption systems. A grid of tensiometers and piezometers were installed beneath and adjacent to the absorption trenches, and water height was manipulated to simulate different hydraulic loadings. At both sites, measured soil matric potentials along the trench sidewalls increased toward zero as water height increased over time, indicating that water was preferentially flowing laterally above the biomat zones. Saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) of the soil and biomat, and other hydraulic parameters were calibrated using inverse modeling procedures in HYDRUS-2D. We found generally good agreement between measured and predicted matric potentials. The calibrated model was then used to predict fluxes through different infiltrative zones under typical and extreme hydraulic loads. Modeling indicated that the overall infiltration rates through the biomat and subbiomat zones fell within a relatively narrow range of 0.025–0.046 m/day at the two sites. Under extreme hydraulic loading to trenches, fluxes through the upper trench sidewalls (i.e., the exfiltration zone) were predicted to be substantially greater (i.e., 80% of total flux) than through the biomat zone. This confirms the conclusions made from field results, that a permeable exfiltration zone provides a critical buffer to surface surcharging during extreme trench loading. Conversely, the presence of a high sidewall biomat can reduce sidewall exfiltration of effluent, and therefore increase the likelihood of surface surcharging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global access to practitioner training in the clinical engagement of fathers in family-based interventions is limited. The current study evaluated the feasibility of training practitioners in Canada and UK using online training developed in Australia by examining improvements in practitioner confidence and competence in father engagement, training satisfaction, qualitative feedback, and benchmarking results to those from an Australian sample. Practitioners were recruited to participate in a 2-h online training program through health services and charity organisations. The online program required practitioners to watch a video and complete self-reflection exercises in a digital workbook. Pre- and post-training measures were collected immediately before and after the online training program. The results indicated significantly large improvements in self-reported confidence and competence in engaging fathers following training, with levels of improvement similar to those found in Australia. Training satisfaction was high and qualitative feedback suggested providing local resources and increasing representation of social diversity could improve training relevance in local contexts. FILTER is an innovative, CSIRO developed system for treating effluent using high rate land application and subsequent effluent recapture via a closely spaced, subsurface drainage network. We report on the summer performance of a FILTER system established in a subtropical environment on a relatively impermeable swelling clay soil underlain by a deep regional water table. Using secondary treated sewage effluent, the FILTER system produced effluent of tertiary nutrient standards (< or = 5 mg/L TN; < or = 1 mg/L TP), with salinity levels suitable for subsequent irrigation reuse (EC < or = 2.5 dS/m). Removal of faecal coliforms was considerably less effective. The hydraulic loading rate achieved was about two and a half times large than conventional irrigation demand, but this was associated with high deep percolation losses (c 3 mm/day). Comparisons are made with the original FILTER system developed and tested by Jayawardane et al. in temperate Australia. Suggestions are made for modifications to, and further testing of FILTER in a subtropical environment.
