Fundamental questions of floral morphology remain unresolved in the grasslike monocots in order Poales, including what constitutes a flower and what constitutes a spikelet. The mapaniid sedges have particularly complex spikeletlike structures, variously interpreted as clusters of flowers or spikelets. Recent phylogenetic studies of Cyperaceae have identified the mapaniid clade as sister to the rest of the family, but the homology of mapaniid reproductive units (RUs) and spikeletlike units (SLUs) to other sedge flowers and spikelets is unclear. We examined reproductive development in the mapaniid Exocarya sclerioides. Inflorescence branches terminated in a SLU with bracts and 1-4 RUs. RUs had four small leaflike structures (LLSs): two lateral LLSs, each associated with a stamen, an abaxial LLS associated with a stamen, and an adaxial LLS. The gynoecium terminated the RU. All RUs were axillary to bracts, and unexpanded bracts and RUs were produced beyond expanded RUs, so SLUs were racemose. RUs developed from a single primordium that initiated two lateral LLSs, then two lateral stamens, then the gynoecium. Initiation of the abaxial LLS and stamen and the adaxial LLS followed. We hypothesize that the RU is a sympodial branch that terminates in a hermaphroditic, flower with two stamens and a gynoecium; the two, lateral LLSs are halves of a deeply divided prophyll. Coastal wetland ecosystems, such as saltmarsh and mangroves, provide a wide range of important ecological and socio-economic services. A good understanding of the spatial and temporal distribution of these ecosystems is critical to maximising the benefits from restoration and conservation projects. We mapped mangrove and saltmarsh ecosystem transitions from 1991 to 2015 in south-eastern Australia, using remotely sensed Landsat data and a Random Forest classification. Our classification results were improved by the addition of two physical variables (Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM), and Distance to Water). We also provide evidence that the addition of post-classification, spatial and temporal, filters improve overall accuracy of coastal wetlands detection by up to 16%. Mangrove and saltmarsh maps produced in this study had an overall User Accuracy of 0.82–0.95 and 0.81–0.87 and an overall Producer Accuracy of 0.71–0.88 and 0.24–0.87 for mangrove and saltmarsh, respectively. We found that mangrove ecosystems in south-eastern Australia have lost an area of 1148 ha (7.6%), whilst saltmarsh experienced an overall increase in coverage of 4157 ha (20.3%) over this 24-year period. Background: Few studies have investigated international variations in the gestational age (GA) distribution of births. While preterm births (22-36 weeks GA) and early term births (37-38 weeks) are at greater risk of adverse health outcomes compared to full term births (39-40 weeks), it is not known if countries with high preterm birth rates also have high early term birth rates. We examined rate associations between preterm and early term births and mean term GA by mode of delivery onset., Methods: We used routine aggregate data on the GA distribution of singleton live births from up to 34 high-income countries/regions in 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2010 to study preterm and early term births overall and by spontaneous or indicated onset. Pearson correlation coefficients were adjusted for clustering in time trend analyses., Results: Preterm and early term births ranged from 4.1% to 8.2% (median 5.5%) and 15.6% to 30.8% (median 22.2%) of live births in 2010, respectively. Countries with higher preterm birth rates in 2004-2010 had higher early term birth rates (r > 0.50, P < 0.01) and changes over time were strongly correlated overall (adjusted-r = 0.55, P < 0.01) and by mode of onset., Conclusion: Positive associations between preterm and early term birth rates suggest that common risk factors could underpin shifts in the GA distribution. Targeting modifiable population risk factors for delivery before 39 weeks GA may provide a useful preterm birth prevention paradigm.
