Search

Growing interest in Pacific issues has meant a surge in Pacific research across the globe. Sadly, some research on Pacific people has been done without Pacific knowledge, wisdom and culture. As Pacific researchers, we understand the importance of outputs that interweave our ancestral and cultural wisdom, whilst centring and privileging our people's narratives. Through the birth of our Moanaroa Pacific Research group, we explore the importance of a research collective which decolonises and re indigenises research as we know it.

The fundamental pillars of nursing science--nursing care, management, and teaching and research--are in constant evolution. The adaptation of Spanish nursing to the European Higher Education Area has promoted nursing research. Over the past few years, several institutions have made official statements concerning the difficulty of finding teaching staff for university nursing degrees. This is closely linked to the production of research, given that minimum criteria must be met for university teacher accreditation. The goal of this study is to analyze scientific production in nursing, nursing research and teaching in The Web of Science in order to establish how this is progressing and to gain further insight into the field of academic nursing. A total of 34,497 documents were analyzed using the Bibliometrix software version 4.1.0. The results reveal an increase in nursing research over time. Most of this is published in English and mainly focuses on specific nursing areas, such as oncology or psychiatry. Spain occupies the eighth place worldwide in nursing research. In spite of this position, the data suggest that other factors are blocking the accreditation of university teachers of nursing in Spain. They also reflect the need to encourage nursing research in this setting in the future.

This paper reports on the first stage of an international comparative study for the project "'Digital educational architectures: Open learning resources in distributed learning infrastructures--EduArc,'" funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. This study reviews the situation of digital educational resources (or (O)ER) framed within the digital transformation of ten different Higher Education (HE) systems (Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Japan, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Turkey and the United States). Following a comparative case study approach, we investigated issues related to the existence of policies, quality assurance mechanisms and measures for the promotion of change in supporting infrastructure development for (O)ER at the national level in HE in the different countries. The results of this mainly documentary research highlight differences and similarities, which are largely due to variations in these countries' political structure organisation. The discussion and conclusion point at the importance of understanding each country's context and culture, in order to understand the differences between them, as well as the challenges they face.

There is an academic acceptance that doctoral studies are a complex, multifaceted endeavour bound with the differing, emerging and contrasting identities of the students who undertake them. This article explores such journeys in the context of one of the most disruptive events to hit the higher educational sector worldwide: COVID-19. The study utilises data collected via an online forum established to collectively explore the challenges, the opportunities and the tensions in the lives of 12 students enrolled in a doctoral degree in an Australian higher education institution. Results indicate that the journey of such students pre-COVID-19 was characterised by a sense of liminality, agency and journey. COVID-19 exacerbated such feelings. The conclusion points to a need to enhance spaces of agency in the graduate research experience to reflect the multidimensionality of students' lives.

Economic uncertainty has steadily increased in response to a series of unforeseen shocks, notably the Global Financial Crisis, Brexit, COVID-19, and the Russia–Ukraine war. This study examined the impact of economic uncertainty on rents and capital values in Australia's office, retail, and industrial property sectors. The reactions of these performance indicators to national uncertainty shocks were assessed through reduced-form vector autoregressive (VAR) models, using quarterly data from 2001Q1 to 2022Q3. Overall, there is an inverse relationship between uncertainty and commercial property performance, with notable variations in magnitude and persistence across the different subsectors. Rents are more sensitive to external shocks across all three subsectors, highlighting their role as signals of short-term performance. Following one standard deviation shock in uncertainty, rents steadily declined for approximately three years in the office and retail subsectors. Industrial rents, however, exhibited muted reactions and recovered quicker, typically within five quarters. This resilience to external shocks displayed by the industrial subsector positions it as a compelling option for defensive investment strategies and portfolio diversification. Capital values are less reactive than rents, showing minimal responses to uncertainty shocks and little long-term persistence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: With the increased demand for the application of technology in property activities, there is a growing need for property professionals adept in using digital technology. Hence, it is important to assess the competence of academia in equipping property professionals with digital technology skills. This study, therefore, assesses property academics in Australian universities to identify their level of knowledge and use of digital technology applicable to the property industry. Design/methodology/approach: Online questionnaire surveys were administered to 22 out of 110 property academics contacted through the Australia Property Institute (API) database to achieve this aim. The collected data were analysed using mean score ranking and ANOVA. Findings: The study found that apart from databases and analytics platforms such as Corelogic RP data, price finder and industry-based software such as the Microsoft Office suite and ARGUS software, the academics were not knowledgeable in most identified and sampled proptech tools. Similarly, most proptech tools were not used or taught to the students. It was also found that early career academics (below five years in academia) were the most knowledgeable group about the proptech tools. Research limitations/implications: Relying on the API database to contact property academics potentially excludes the position of property academics who may not be affiliated or have contacts with API, hence, the findings of this study should be generalised with caution. Practical implications: The study bears huge implications for the property education sector and industry in Australia; a low knowledge and use of nascent tools such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain, drones, fintech, which have received intense interest, reveals some level of skill gap of students who pass through that system and may need to be upskilled by employers to meet the current day demand. Originality/value: In response to the clamour for technology-inclined property professionals, this paper presents itself as the first to assess the knowledge levels and application of digital technology by property academics. This study investigated the effects of multimedia and modality design principles using a learning intervention about Australia with a sample of college students and employing measures of learning outcomes, visual attention, satisfaction, and mental effort. Seventy-five college students were systematically assigned to one of four conditions: a) text with pictures, b) text without pictures, c) narration with pictures, or d) narration without pictures. No significant differences were found among the four groups in learning performance, satisfaction, or self-reported mental effort, and participants rarely focused their visual attention on the representational pictures provided in the intervention. Neither the multimedia nor the modality principles held true in this study. However, participants in narration environments focused significantly more visual attention on the "Next" button, a navigational aid included on all slides. This study contributes to the research on visual attention and navigational aids in multimedia learning, and it suggests such features may cause distractions, particularly when spoken text is provided without on-screen text. The paper also offers implications for the design of multimedia learning resources so as to improve learning for all students.

One cohort that has not been given extended attention in the period during which transition takes place is academically high-performing students. This research study uniquely synthesises some of these key factors by investigating how students in mixed-ability, seventh-grade classrooms across Australia, Peru, Scotland, South Korea, Spain and Vietnam regard a hypothetical, academically able peer. The fictitious student's intellectual ability, positive social traits and popularity varied across the six countries involved in this study, and were observed according to the gender of the perceiver. More specifically, the perceived popularity of a high-performing boy or girl was reported differently among the country groups. In Scotland, for example, the authors uncovered a potential risk to female social status arising from peer reactions to her academic achievement. Yet in Vietnam, female study participants maintained a positive perception of both hypothetical students, regardless of gender. The results of this study are discussed herein.

This cross-national scenario based study examined fourth-grade students' perceptions of high-performing classmates in terms of their expected intellectual abilities, positive social qualities and popularity among their peers across seven countries. The overall results show that high academic achievements predominantly lead to positive expectations within the peer group. However, pronounced differences were found between the countries. The results indicated that students from Spanish-speaking countries viewed their potential high-performing peers most favorably, followed by students from Australia, the United Kingdom and Germany. The least favorable expectations, but by no means negative attitude, were exhibited by students from the two East-Asian countries Korea and Vietnam. In contrast, the respondents' gender and the gender of the hypothetical successful classmates had less influence on student perceptions of high-performers. These findings have implications for the educational provision of high performing students in different cross-national contexts.

This study explores how secondary school students perceive high-performing potential classmates. A total of 1,794 seventh- and 10th-grade students from five countries completed a questionnaire measuring their expectations of hypothetical male and female high-performing classmates in three categories: intellectual ability, positive social qualities, and popularity. Across the five countries represented in this study, analyses of variance indicated that students did not report negative attitudes toward the three potential characteristics of a hypothetical gifted peer. Vietnamese students in particular reported more positive observations about the hypothetical classmate than their Australian, Peruvian, South Korean, and Spanish counterparts. Differing cross-national attitudes toward high-performing peers and the implications therein are discussed.

Issue Addressed: The Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) Health Promotion Unit was awarded a Cancer Institute NSW grant to raise awareness of bowel cancer and promote the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP) among Aboriginal communities in SLHD. The COVID‐19 pandemic thwarted initial plans for face‐to‐face workshops and plans pivoted to digital products and dissemination of messages on a range of communication platforms. Discussion: The coronavirus (COVID‐19) pandemic provided staff with the freedom, flexibility, and ability to be creative in ways not possible prior to the pandemic and ultimately ended up with a superior product with a reach further than anticipated. A more comprehensive suite of digital resources addressing barriers to bowel cancer screening in the Aboriginal community was produced that is able to be used more broadly. These resources have reached a much larger population group through websites, social media, as well as TV and radio advertisements, and have the potential to be used and adapted in other local health districts and states across Australia. Conclusion: Adapting an Aboriginal bowel cancer screening awareness program to a digital platform is a promising approach. So What?: COVID‐19 provided an opportunity to create new long‐lasting partnerships and to be creative beyond the scope of the original grant. The estimation of water quality properties through satellite remote sensing relies on (1) the optical characteristics of the water body, (2) the resolutions (spatial, spectral, radiometric and temporal) of the sensor and (3) algorithm(s) applied. More than 80% of global water bodies fall under Case I (open ocean) waters, dominated by scattering and absorption associated with phytoplankton in the water column. Globally, previous studies show significant correlations between satellite-based retrieval methods and field measurements of absorbing and scattering constituents, while limited research from Australian coastal water bodies appears. This study presents a methodology to extract chlorophyll a properties from surface waters from near-coastal environments, within 2 km of coastline, in Tasmania, south-eastern Australia. We use general purpose, global, long-time series, multi-spectral satellite data, as opposed to ocean colour-specific sensor data. This approach may offer globally applicable tools for combining global satellite image archives with in situ field sensors for water quality monitoring. To enable applications from local to global scales, a cloud-based geospatial analysis workflow was developed and tested on several sites. This work represents the initial stage in developing a semi-automated near-coastal water-quality workflow using easily accessed, fully corrected global multi-spectral datasets alongside large-scale computation and delivery capabilities. Our results indicated a strong correlation between the in situ chlorophyll concentration data and blue-green band ratios from the multi-spectral sensor. In line with published research, environment-specific empirical models exhibited the highest correlations between in situ and satellite measurements, underscoring the importance of tailoring models to specific coastal waters. Our findings may provide the basis for developing this workflow for other sites in Australia. We acknowledge the use of general purpose multi-spectral data such as the Sentinel-2 and Landsat Series, their corrections and algorithms may not be as accurate and precise as ocean colour satellites. The data we are using are more readily accessible and also have true global coverage with global historic archives and regular, global collection will continue at least 10 years in the future. Regardless of sensor specifications, the retrieval method relies on localised algorithm calibration and validation using in situ measurements, which demonstrates close-to-realistic outputs. We hope this approach enables future applications to also consider these globally accessible and regularly updated datasets that are suited to coastal environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accurate and comparable annual mapping is critical to understanding changing vegetation distribution and informing land use planning and management. A U-Net convolutional neural network (CNN) model was used to map natural vegetation and forest types based on annual Landsat geomedian reflectance composite images for a 500 km × 500 km study area in southeastern Australia. The CNN was developed using 2018 imagery. Label data were a ten-class natural vegetation and forest classification (i.e., Acacia, Callitris, Casuarina, Eucalyptus, Grassland, Mangrove, Melaleuca, Plantation, Rainforest and Non-Forest) derived by combining current best-available regional-scale maps of Australian forest types, natural vegetation and land use. The best CNN generated using six Landsat geomedian bands as input produced better results than a pixel-based random forest algorithm, with higher overall accuracy (OA) and weighted mean F1 score for all vegetation classes (93 vs. 87% in both cases) and a higher Kappa score (86 vs. 74%). The trained CNN was used to generate annual vegetation maps for 2000–2019 and evaluated for an independent test area of 100 km × 100 km using statistics describing accuracy regarding the label data and temporal stability. Seventy-six percent of pixels did not change over the 20 years (2000–2019), and year-on-year results were highly correlated (94–97% OA). The accuracy of the CNN model was further verified for the study area using 3456 independent vegetation survey plots where the species of interest had ≥ 50% crown cover. The CNN showed an 81% OA compared with the plot data. The model accuracy was also higher than the label data (76%), which suggests that imperfect training data may not be a major obstacle to CNN-based mapping. Applying the CNN to other regions would help to test the spatial transferability of these techniques and whether they can support the automated production of accurate and comparable annual maps of natural vegetation and forest types required for national reporting. The aim of this clinical audit is to evaluate the characteristics of dental infections requiring hospitalisations, which may help improve preventative and management policies. This study retrospectively evaluated the records of patients admitted to the Nepean hospital, Kingswood, New South Wales, Australia, due to dental infections between 2018 and 2019. A total of 102 patients, mostly in their thirties with equal gender distribution, were admitted with dental infections, presenting with pain (100%), swelling (99%), trismus (40.2%), dysphagia (27.4%), fever (21%) [>37 °C], tachycardia (24.8%) and tachypnoea (9.3%). Most patients (68%) presented on weekends, outside regular working hours, and public holidays. A total of 52.5% of patients had taken prior antibiotics. Dental caries, smoking, mental health issues, and illicit drug use were featured strongly. The majority of patients (56.4%) underwent treatment under local anaesthesia. The total length of hospital stay was 271 days (mean 2.7, SD 1.6). Augmentin was the most prescribed antibiotic. Complications were reported in 8.8% of the patients, primarily due to airway compromise. Dental infections leading to hospitalisations continue to be a burden on the healthcare system. A notable finding was that the presentations were primarily on weekends, outside regular working hours, and public holidays, and the majority required dental interventions under local anaesthesia. The provision of on-call emergency dental services may reduce potentially preventable hospitalisations and the length of hospital stay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context: The goal of increasing sequestration of carbon (C) in soil assumes that management factors can be as influential as intrinsic factors such as climate and parent material. Aim: The hypotheses tested in this study were (i) that soil C would increase more in limed than in unlimed pasture treatments, and (ii) that well-managed perennial pasture treatments would accumulate soil C to a greater depth than annual pasture treatments. Method: An 18-year field experiment was conducted on a duplex soil in the mixed farming zone of south-eastern Australia. The experiment contained four treatment contrasts: limed and unlimed perennial and annual pasture systems. Soils samples to 120 cm were taken annually and analysed for C and nitrogen (N) concentrations. Soil C and N stocks were calculated. Key results: The four treatments produced a similar annual rate of increase in soil C concentration and C stocks. The increase in C stock was confined to the surface 30 cm of soil in all four treatments, leading to the rejection of both hypotheses. Nitrogen concentration and N stocks to 30 cm depth increased significantly over the 18 years, with no difference among treatments. Conclusion: Pasture land use increased soil C storage by ~700 kg ha−1 year−1; however, the increase was confined to the surface soil. Implication: The soil C sequestered in this duplex soil is vulnerable to erosion. The co-retained N might have more value from both production and environmental perspectives. Accumulation of soil organic carbon is considered beneficial to both farm productivity and the environment. Although conservation farming might make little direct contribution to soil carbon stocks, it is likely to be essential for the retention of soil carbon stores in duplex soils. In Europe, there is a growing interest in honors education, not only in the bachelor's but also in the master's degree. The Dutch government, for instance, is actively promoting excellence in both bachelor's and master's degrees through honors programs (Siriusteam). Most Dutch universities have honors programs at the bachelor's level or are developing them. Some universities have also recently introduced honors into their master's programs, stimulated by recent publications (van Eijl, Wolfensberger & Pilot). Because honors master's programs are a new phenomenon in higher education and are still exceptional in the United States of America, the authors have undertaken a research project to study them (van Ginkel & van Eijl). For this exploratory project, a mixed method approach was used (Creswell & Plano-Clark; van Ginkel & van Eijl) in a study that was carried out at the start of the academic year 2009-2010. First, an Internet search identified Dutch and non-Dutch honors master's programs. Second, a literature review facilitated a comparison between Dutch honors master's programs and Dutch honors bachelor's programs. Third, staff members provided insights into the honors master's within the discipline of law at the University of Utrecht. Interviews with teachers revealed specific information about a representative example of Dutch honors master's courses. Fourth, in line with the interviews, a small quantitative survey yielded an impression of the interest of students in supplemental activities included in the master's stage of their study. Thirty-seven master's students from different disciplines completed the survey. The study revealed the existence of different kinds of honors master's programs not only in The Netherlands but also in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Germany, Italy, and Ireland. These honors master's programs are found in the humanities, social sciences, hard sciences, and professional schools. The programs are diverse with respect to content, focus, and scheduling, and they are, as far as the authors could trace, very new. It is concluded that the emergence of honors master's programs shows a new focus on promoting excellence in university teaching and learning not only among undergraduates but now also at the master's level.

Objective. Microvascular complications increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and premature death in adults with type 1 diabetes. We examined the association between microvascular complications during adolescence, including cardiac autonomic nerve dysfunction and subsequent mortality. Research Design and Methods. We undertook data linkage with the Australian National Death Index in a cohort of 409 adolescents (diagnosed between 1973 and 1993), 48% male, median age at final complications assessment 17.4 years (interquartile range: 16.0–18.9), followed longitudinally for median 22.3 years (21.0–23.4) from diagnosis. Generalized estimating equations (GEE) were used to examine associations between mortality and adolescent complications. Mortality risk was calculated as standardized mortality ratio (SMR). Results. At final adolescent visit, 20% had CAN abnormality, 30% abnormal pupillary response, 20% albuminuria, 40% early elevation of albumin excretion rate (AER) and 45% retinopathy. Data linkage 8–13 years later showed 14 were deceased (3% of cohort), 57% male, median age 28.3 years (24.8–32.9). Acute or chronic diabetes complications accounted for 25% of deaths. In multivariable GEE, elevated AER (OR 4.54, 1.23–16.80, p = 0.030), pupillary abnormality (OR 4.27, 1.20–15.22, p = 0.023), systolic blood pressure SDS (OR 2.17, 1.26–3.74, p = 0.005) and CAN (OR 4.65, 1.03–21.0, p = 0.045) predicted mortality. HbA1c was not significant. SMR was 2.5 (1.4–4.2) and was higher in females (SMR 3.5, 1.3–7.8) but not in males (SMR 2.1, 0.9–4.0). Conclusion. Mortality in young adults with type 1 diabetes is predicted by subclinical markers of autonomic neuropathy and elevated AER during adolescence, but not glycemia. Long-term, reliable datasets of satellite-based vegetation condition are essential for understanding terrestrial ecosystem responses to global environmental change, particularly in Australia which is characterised by diverse ecosystems and strong interannual climate variability. We comprehensively evaluate several existing global AVHRR NDVI products for their suitability for long-term vegetation monitoring in Australia. Comparisons with MODIS NDVI highlight significant deficiencies, particularly over densely vegetated regions. Moreover, all the assessed products failed to adequately reproduce inter-annual variability in the pre-MODIS era as indicated by Landsat NDVI anomalies. To address these limitations, we propose a new approach to calibrating and harmonising NOAA's Climate Data Record AVHRR NDVI to MODIS MCD43A4 NDVI for Australia using a gradient-boosting decision tree ensemble method. Two versions of the datasets are developed, one incorporating climate data in the predictors ('AusENDVI-clim': Aus tralian E mpirical NDVI-clim ate) and another independent of climate data ('AusENDVI-noclim'). These datasets, spanning 1982–2013 at a spatial resolution of 0.05°, exhibit strong correlation and low relative errors compared to MODIS NDVI, accurately reproducing seasonal cycles over densely vegetated regions. Furthermore, they closely replicate the interannual variability in vegetation condition in the pre-MODIS era. A reliable method for gap-filling the AusENDVI record is also developed that leverages climate, atmospheric CO2 concentration, and woody cover fraction predictors. The resulting synthetic NDVI dataset shows excellent agreement with observations. Finally, we provide a complete 41-year dataset where gap filled AusENDVI from January 1982 to February 2000 is seamlessly joined with MODIS NDVI from March 2000 to December 2022. Analysing 40-year per-pixel trends in Australia's annual maximum NDVI revealed increasing values across most of the continent. Moreover, shifts in the timing of annual peak NDVI are identified, underscoring the dataset's potential to address crucial questions regarding changing vegetation phenology and its drivers. The AusENDVI dataset can be used for studying Australia's changing vegetation dynamics and downstream impacts on terrestrial carbon and water cycles, and provides a reliable foundation for further research into the drivers of vegetation change. Guidelines for prostate specific antigen (PSA) testing in Australia recommend that men at average risk of prostate cancer who have been informed of the benefits and harms, and who decide to undergo regular testing, should be offered testing every 2 years from 50 to 69 years. This study aimed to estimate the benefits and harms of regular testing in this context. We constructed Policy1‐Prostate, a discrete event microsimulation platform of the natural history of prostate cancer and prostate cancer survival, and PSA testing patterns and subsequent management in Australia. The model was calibrated to pre‐PSA (before 1985) prostate cancer incidence and mortality and validated against incidence and mortality trends from 1985 to 2011 and international trials. The model predictions were concordant with trials and Australian observed incidence and mortality data from 1985 to 2011. Out of 1000 men who choose to test according to the guidelines, 36 [21‐41] men will die from prostate cancer and 126 [119‐133] men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, compared with 50 [47‐54] and 94 [90‐98] men who do not test, respectively. During the 20 years of active PSA testing, 32.3% [25.6%‐38.8%] of all PSA‐test detected cancers are overdiagnosed cases that is, 30 [21‐42] out of 94 [83‐107] PSA‐test detected cancers. Australian men choosing to test with PSA every two years from 50 to 69 will reduce their risk of ever dying from prostate cancer and incur a risk of overdiagnosis: for every man who avoids dying from prostate cancer, two will be overdiagnosed with prostate cancer between 50 and 69 years of age. The concurrent diagnoses of Buruli ulcer (BU) and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a phenomenon not previously described, despite the fact that both conditions are highly prevalent in Australia. This report presents an intriguing case of concurrent diagnoses, with clues alluding to more than one skin condition being present. The case involves a 73-year-old man with BU diagnosed on the scalp, an atypical location, which led to the consideration of malignancy, ultimately revealing concurrent SCC. This case highlights the importance of considering both conditions in patients with epidemiological risk factors, necessitating multiple lines of investigation for accurate diagnosis. Medical practitioners must remain vigilant and incorporate this possibility into their diagnostic algorithms for suspicious skin lesions to optimize treatment and outcomes. This is the first recorded instance of simultaneous diagnosis, underlining the need for enhanced awareness and attention to these unique cases. Author summary: Buruli ulcer (BU) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) can coexist in the same lesion. SCC and other cutaneous malignancies may act as a portal of entry for the mycobacteria. Clinical differentiation is challenging, and biopsy should be performed, with tissue sent for histopathological evaluation as well as Mycobacterium ulcerans PCR. Consider the possibility of underlying malignancy if a Mycobacterium ulcerans lesion occurs in an unusual body site (for example: on the scalp) or does not heal as expected, despite appropriate treatment. Kelp forests may contribute substantially to ocean carbon sequestration, mainly through transporting kelp carbon away from the coast and into the deep sea. However, it is not clear if and how kelp detritus is transported across the continental shelf. Dense shelf water transport (DSWT) is associated with offshore flows along the seabed and provides an effective mechanism for cross-shelf transport. In this study, we determine how effective DSWT is in exporting kelp detritus beyond the continental shelf edge, by considering the transport of simulated sinking kelp detritus from a region of Australia's Great Southern Reef. We show that DSWT is the main mechanism that transports simulated kelp detritus past the continental shelf edge, and that export is negligible when DSWT does not occur. We find that 51% per year of simulated kelp detritus is transported past the continental shelf edge, or 17–29% when accounting for decomposition while in transit across the shelf. This is substantially more than initial global estimates. Because DSWT occurs in many mid-latitude locations around the world, where kelp forests are also most productive, export of kelp carbon from the coast could be considerably larger than initially expected. The work readiness of property graduates is the subject of global discourse and is an increasingly critical gap as employers demand professionals with competencies in their fundamental roles and digital technologies. Although these issues have been explored from the perspectives of students, graduates, and employers, the insights of property academics remain unexplored. As such, this study delved into the challenges encountered by property academics in Australia concerning the training of property graduates for the digital age, as well as the efficacy of strategies used to achieve this. The opinions of 22 property academics were gathered through an online questionnaire survey and analysed through mean scores, relative importance index (RII), and exploratory factor analysis (EFA). The profile of respondents suggests that approximately half of them have no more than five years of industry experience, and only 54.5% currently engage with the industry. The most significant challenges include limited funding to procure bespoke software and insufficient time to achieve digital competency. Furthermore, academics cited limited support from the universities as a key challenge, but rated curriculum rigidity as non-pertinent. Regarding strategies, retraining academics for digital proficiency, increased technical support from universities, adopting active learning, and revising curricula to incorporate digital technology are critical. Collaboration with industry partners and increased funding for software procurement also emerged as key external factors. Variations in these perceptions also suggest that older academics are less receptive towards retraining, academics with more industry experience believe that a restructuring of the curricula is required, and smaller institutions require more funding and industry support. The core themes of the proposed strategies also indicate that holistic curricula integration is required to incorporate the perspectives of all stakeholders. Bioavailability models, for example, multiple linear regressions (MLRs) of water quality parameters, are increasingly being used to develop bioavailability‐based water quality criteria for metals. However, models developed for the Northern Hemisphere cannot be adopted for Australia and New Zealand without first validating them against local species and local water chemistry characteristics. We investigated the applicability of zinc chronic bioavailability models to predict toxicity in a range of uncontaminated natural waters in Australia and New Zealand. Water chemistry data were compiled to guide a selection of waters with different zinc toxicity‐modifying factors. Predicted toxicities using several bioavailability models were compared with observed chronic toxicities for the green alga Raphidocelis subcapitata and the native cladocerans Ceriodaphnia cf. dubia and Daphnia thomsoni. The most sensitive species to zinc in five New Zealand freshwaters was R. subcapitata (72‐h growth rate), with toxicity ameliorated by high dissolved organic carbon (DOC) or low pH, and hardness having a minimal influence. Zinc toxicity to D. thomsoni (reproduction) was ameliorated by both high DOC and hardness in these same waters. No single trophic level–specific effect concentration, 10% (EC10) MLR was the best predictor of chronic toxicity to the cladocerans, and MLRs based on EC10 values both over‐ and under‐predicted zinc toxicity. The EC50 MLRs better predicted toxicities to both the Australian and New Zealand cladocerans to within a factor of 2 of the observed toxicities in most waters. These findings suggest that existing MLRs may be useful for normalizing local ecotoxicity data to derive water quality criteria for Australia and New Zealand. Context: Limitations to crop yield due to subsurface (5–15 cm depth) compaction layers (>2 MPa) and subsurface acidity (pHCa <4.8) have frequently been reported on the non-sodic soils of south-eastern Australia, but amendment studies have been limited in number and inconsistent in the extent and longevity of any response. Aim: We tested the hypothesis that amendment of subsurface acidity and compaction would lead to increased grain yield. Method: We investigated crop response to the alleviation of these combined subsurface soil constraints by using deep ripping and dry limestone injection to 30 cm depth over 3 years in a canola–cereal sequence. Key results: Deep tillage and injection of limestone into the soil both failed to produce significant grain yield responses in any year, despite the reduction of soil strength and increase in pH in subsurface layers. Early vegetative growth sometimes responded to the treatments, but the loss of stored soil water during drier than average seasons appeared to limit grain response. However, we also observed that a proportion of plant roots penetrated these relatively thin constraint layers in unamended soils. Conclusions: Amelioration of subsurface acidity and compaction does not necessarily increase grain yield. Implications: The effects of subsurface acidity and compaction should be tested on other species and during varying rainfall deciles. Given the potentially large resource requirements for deep amendment of soils, we propose that the selection of tolerant species and cultivars might be more effective in the short term. Recorded apparent declines in canola grain yield have been associated with abnormal canola roots. We investigated the amelioration of low subsurface soil pH and hardpans by deep lime placement and deep ripping. Despite increased soil pH and lower soil strength in the subsurface soil, there were no significant grain yield responses in either canola or cereals during drier than normal years. Previous empirical studies have yielded inconclusive results about peer perceptions of academically high performing students. The purpose of this study was to investigate students' perceptions of the intellectual ability, positive social qualities, and popularity of a hypothetical new high performing classmate. Participants were 1060 Vietnamese, South Korean, British, Australian, Peruvian, and Spanish boys and girls in 10th grade. The results revealed that the perceptions of academically high performing classmates differed by country group. Positive perceptions of intellectual ability and social qualities were commonly found in all countries except the two Asian countries (Vietnam and South Korea), where the students reported more neutral views of high performers. In conclusion, it is argued that there is no evidence for possible iatrogenic effects of gifted education programs aiming at high achievements.

Many countries have started their transition to a net-zero economy. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) play an ever-increasing role towards this transition as a rechargeable energy storage medium. Initially, LIBs were developed for consumer electronics and portable devices but have seen dramatic growth in their use in electric vehicles (EVs) and via the gradual uptake in battery energy storage systems (BESSs) over the last decade. As such, critical metals (Li, Co, Ni, and Mn) and chemicals (polymers, electrolytes, Cu, Al, PVDF, LiPF6, LiBF4, and graphite) needed for LIBs are currently in great demand and are susceptible to global supply shortages. Dramatic increases in raw material prices, coupled with predicted exponential growth in global demand (e.g., United States graphite demand from 2022 7000 t to ~145,000 t), means that LIBs will not be sustainable if only sourced from raw materials. LIBs degrade over time. When their performance can no longer meet the requirement of their intended application (e.g., EVs in the 8–12 year range), opportunities exist to extract and recover battery materials for re-use in new batteries or to supply other industrial chemical sectors. This paper compares the challenges, barriers, opportunities, and successes of the United States of America and Australia as they transition to renewable energy storage and develop a battery supply chain to support a circular economy around LIBs. We develop high-resolution (1 km) estimates of gross primary productivity (GPP), ecosystem respiration (ER), and net ecosystem exchange (NEE) over the Australian continent for the period January 2003 to June 2022 by empirical upscaling of flux tower measurements. We compare our estimates with nine other products that cover the three broad categories that define current methods for estimating the terrestrial carbon cycle and assess if consiliences between datasets can point to the correct dynamics of Australia's carbon cycle. Our results indicate that regional empirical upscaling greatly improves upon the existing global empirical upscaling efforts, outperforms process-based models, and agrees much better with the dynamics of CO 2 flux over Australia as estimated by two regional atmospheric inversions. Our nearly 20-year estimates of terrestrial carbon fluxes revealed that Australia is a strong net carbon sink of -0.44 PgC yr -1 (interquartile range, IQR = 0.42 PgC yr -1) on average, with an inter-annual variability of 0.18 PgC yr -1 and an average seasonal amplitude of 0.85 PgC yr -1. Annual mean carbon uptake estimated from other methods ranged considerably, while carbon flux anomalies showed much better agreement between methods. NEE anomalies were predominately driven by cumulative rainfall deficits and surpluses, resulting in larger anomalous responses from GPP than ER. In contrast, we show that the long-term average seasonal cycle is dictated more by the variability in ER than GPP, resulting in peak carbon uptake typically occurring during the cooler, drier austral autumn and winter months. This new estimate of Australia's terrestrial carbon cycle provides a benchmark for assessment against land surface model simulations and a means for monitoring of Australia's terrestrial carbon cycle at an unprecedented high resolution. Amid Australia's surging house prices, rental housing has become the safety net for young adults experiencing housing stress. The attention of policymakers is drawn towards the build-to-rent (BTR) housing model, a growing housing option for many young Australian adults. Although BTR's integration into Australia's housing and planning landscape is unfolding, the perception of young adults is lacking in policy reforms for this growing industry. This study examines the perspectives of young adults aged 18 to 34 years on the critical success factors (CSFs) of the BTR housing provision in Australia. The responses are analysed using an explanatory factor analysis, relative importance index, and ANOVA. Our findings show a critically low awareness of BTR among young adults in Australia. Respondents, between 18 and 24 years, are most concerned with public awareness, an indication of their desire for transparency and engagement in decision making at the policy level. Young adults rank regulation and government policy interventions as the most important CSF of BTR housing. This shows that they are more concerned about the affordability of BTR houses. This study concludes that young adults' viewpoints on BTR are important in ongoing policy reforms. There is a need to ensure that this asset class is accessible and affordable to this target group. Purpose: This study intends to review studies on the success criteria and critical success factors (CSFs) for mega infrastructure construction projects (MICPs) from journal articles between 2000 and 2018 to (1) identify the publication trend of success criteria and CSFs for MICPs; (2) explore distributions of selected papers, including the distribution of journals, authors' origin/country and publications by country or region focus; and (3) summarize the findings of success criteria and CSFs studies of MICPs. Design/methodology/approach: A methodical and systematic analysis of 38 selected journal articles was conducted using descriptive analysis to obtain the annual trend of publications, distributions of publication sources, contributors' origin/country, regions/countries of research focus, methods involved in publications and thematic analysis to identify and categorize success criteria and CSFs for MICPs. Findings: Australia, the USA, UK, China and Hong Kong had been the leading contributors for publications on success criteria and CSFs for MICPs; meanwhile, China, Australia and the UK have been the countries of focus for most studies on this specific topic. This review identified 20 success criteria grouped into 5 constructs and 36 CSFs grouped into 5 categories and, respectively, integrated them into two conceptual frameworks. The top five CSFs were adequate resource availability, partnering/relationships with key stakeholders, adequate communication and coordination among related parties, public support or acceptance and clear strategic vision. Three implications, namely, evaluation indicators, relationships between CSFs and the success of MICPs and human-related factors, are highlighted in future research. Originality/value: The identified success criteria and CSFs provide a basis for evaluating the success possibility of MICPs and serve to identify areas for further improvement. Additionally, the CSFs checklist and framework have been established, which could help to conduct further empirical studies.
