Abstract

The article presents a study on the origin of yellowtail kingfish from Lord Howe Island, Australia. Researchers examined the otolith chemistry from juvenile kingfish collected from the island, New South Wales and Elizabeth and Middleton Reefs. Results show a strong distinction in otolith signatures from different locations with error rate of classification ranging from 3.5% to 9.9%. Results also go to show that a significant proportion of the adult kingfish sampled may have originated in the waters around Lord Howe Island or nearby Elizabeth and Middleton reefs.
