- Abstract
Between 1980 and 1989 15 patients underwent 16 operations for repair of a postinfarction ventricular septal defect. Cardiogenic shock developed in 11 patients, in 9 cases an intraaortic balloon-pump was implanted. 7 patients died, the 8 survivors are in clinical stadium II after a mean follow up of 49 months. We think, that septal rupture after myocardial infarction should be referred to urgent assessment. The results in long term survivors are very satisfying.
