This paper describes and analyzes the chief national and regional population trends to emerge in Azerbaijan between 1989, the year of the last Soviet Union census, and 1999, Focus is on the national total, urban, and rural population and urbanization trends, and especially to trends in such characteristics among the more than 60 rayons. In addition, fertility, mortality, natural increase (fertility minus mortality), migration, and nationality patterns, as well as the impact of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, are also addressed when appropriate, particularly with regard to their impact on those more general trends.
