Abstract

The article discusses a study which investigated unconscious race and social class bias among freshmen medical students and its relationship with assessments made in clinical vignettes. It cites the administration of a Web-based survey to medical students at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland in August 2009-August 2010. Results of the study showed implicit preference toward white individuals among 69% of students. Findings also revealed that 86% of students prefer the upper class and that assessments did not vary by patient race or occupation.
