The article discusses the molecular cue that guides the axons of neurons to their target which was developed by David Ginty and Takako Makita at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. It is mentioned that one model postulates that each neurons randomly connect to other neurons by using cues such as blood vessels as guides. Makita and Hopkins worked with the neurons positioned where the common carotid artery branches grow. They found out the that activity of genes from endothelin family was higher in the external carotid artery. Results showed that endothelin family of proteins acts as guides for external carotid artery.
