Shrimp aquaculture has been accomplished with breeding and nursing of shrimp in an artificial environment to fulfill the increasing demand of shrimp consumption worldwide. However, the microbial diseases appear as a serious problem in this industry. The study was designed to identify the diverse bacteria from shrimp PL (post-larvae) nurseries and to profile antibiotic resistance patterns. The rearing water (raw seawater, treated and outlet water) and shrimp PL were collected from eight nurseries of south-west Bangladesh. Using selective agar plates, thirty representative isolates were selected for 16S rRNA gene sequencing, antibiotic susceptibility test and MAR index calculation. Representative isolates were identified as Aeromonas caviae, Pseudomonas monteilii, Shewanella algae, Vibrio alginolyticus, V. brasiliensis, V. natriegens, V. parahaemolyticus, V. shilonii, V. xuii, Zobellella denitrificans which are Gram-negative, and Bacillus licheniformis and B. pumilus which are Grampositive. Notably, six strains identified as Acinetobacter venetianus might be a concern of risk for shrimp industry. The antibiotic resistance pattern reveals that the strain YWO8-97 (identified as P. monteilii) was resistant to all twelve antibiotics. Ceftazidime was the most powerful antibiotic since most of the studied strains were sensitive against it. The six strains of A. venetianus showed multiple antibiotic resistance patterns. MAR index were ranged from 0.08 to 1.0, and values of 26 isolates were more than 0.2 which means prior high exposure to the antibiotics. From the present study, it can be concluded that shrimp PL nurseries in southern part of Bangladesh are getting contaminated with antibiotic resistant pathogenic bacteria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objectives: Due to geographical position and geological nature, Bangladesh (BD) has been the worst affected country in the world by arsenic contamination. The aim of this study was to highlight the association of chronic arsenic intoxication with thyroid disorders (TDs). Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from March 2019 to February 2020 at Ad-din Women's Medical College and Hospital. One thousand one hundred and thirty-seven patients were randomly selected, who visited the outpatient departments of medicine faculty with thyroid-stimulating hormone test report. Rest of the thyroid function tests were done if required. Considering the arsenic level in irrigation and drinking water, 64 districts of BD were divided into two regions "arsenic prevalent area" and "less arsenic prevalent area" and patients hailing from those areas were divided as Group 1 and Group 2, respectively. All patients were subjected to history taking and physical examination. Chi-square test and one-way ANOVA test were used to compare the variables. Results: Prevalence of TD were significantly higher in Group 1 (60.14%; P = 0.001) and so was the prevalence of goiter (19%;P = 0.021). Older (31.17 ± 9.81;P = 0.001) and female patients (94.92%;P = 0.001) were more prone to develop TD. Conclusion: It will require more studies at larger scale for better understanding of the association of thyroid disorders with chronic arsenic intoxication. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) of shrimps is a bacterial disease, first appeared in China in 2009 and causes mortality up to 100% which usually occurs early (within approximately first 35 days) after stocking shrimp fry of black tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon (Fabricius) and white leg shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone). The purpose of this study was to isolate and identify the pathogenic strain of V. parahaemolyticus causing AHPND in cultured shrimps (P. monodon) using molecular techniques. After a disease outbreak in April 2017, shrimp samples were collected from three different locations of south-west shrimp farming region of Bangladesh viz. Satkhira, Khulna and Bagerhat districts. In this study, three selective media were used for primary isolation of V. parahaemolyticus. Among 28 primary isolates, representative14 isolates were checked for the species-specific detection of V. parahaemolyticus using ldh primers and all of them were found to be positive. The isolates were further characterized to check their AHPND positivity using AP3 and AP4 primers. Four isolates showed positive results for both AP3 and AP4 which indicated that the isolates were AHPND positive. This study also report that all AHPND positive strains showed sensitivity to the antibiotics Tetracycline and Nalidixic Acid. The results of this study will help the farmers and policy makers to make plan to protect shrimps from AHPND and thereby sustain the shrimp farming in Bangladesh. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
