There has been a continuous debate over a long period over the issue of using the learner's mother tongue in teaching the second language. We have two schools in this regard--monolingual approach and bilingual approach. Those advocating the monolingual approach have claimed that learning is determined by the quantity of exposure to the target language. On the other hand, bilingual approach focuses on the fact that learners are facilitated by the use of their mother tongue. The primary concern of this study is to find out whether Bangla is used in teaching English at tertiary level in Bangladesh and if used, in which situation and to what extent. This study has been done in a private university situated in Dhaka. The researchers have used various techniques to collect the data, the analysis of which reveals that teachers of tertiary level use Bangla in English language teaching classes in some specific situations such as explaining difficult grammatical rules, presenting new vocabulary, giving instructions, etc. and they do so in accordance to the proficiency level of the learners.

Background: Following the mass influx of Rohingya refugees into Cox's Bazaar, Bangladesh in 2017, makeshift settlement camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf have been overburdened, leading to livelihood challenges for both Rohingya and host communities. The humanitarian crisis has had adverse effects on vulnerable populations, which include older people, persons with disabilities, adolescents, and single female household heads. Using a subset of a larger dataset on households with most vulnerable groups in both communities, we analysed the effect of the pandemic and lockdown on the livelihood of single female household (HH) heads. Methods: A cross-sectional household roster survey was designed to collect data from households with most vulnerable groups (MVGs) of host and Rohingya communities from December 2020 to March 2021; 11 host community villages and 10 Rohingya camps purposively selected as per the affiliated intervention of the project. The paper analysed quantitative and qualitative data from the sub-group of single female household heads without any income/low income. Participants were surveyed for their socio-demographic characteristics, COVID-19 experiences and knowledge, food security situation, social experiences and mental health using PHQ-2 test for depression. Results: We surveyed 432 single female HH heads. Support during the pandemic was reported to be low, with less than 50% of HHs reporting relief meeting their needs; only 36% and 15% of these HHs received rations in camps and host communities respectively. Loan facilities were mostly unavailable and there were reported insufficiencies in food consumption. Over 50% of respondents tested positive on the PHQ-2, a scale used to screen for depression. Further analyses indicates that having a chronic health issue (OR 2.2, 95% CI 1.33–3.66) was positively associated with the PHQ-2 score for Rohingya single females. For host single females, having an ill member in the HH (OR 1.46, 95% CI 1.02–2.08) and the inability to save before the pandemic (OR 1.57 95% CI 1.11–2.23) increased the odds of screening positive for depression. Conclusion: Our study findings revealed insufficiencies with economic opportunities and food security for single female-headed households, as well as a high rate of positive screening for depression amongst this population. Introduction: COVID-19 has changed all the routine works of human beings around the globe. The food habits of the elderly are changing due to various reasons. The purpose of this study was to find out the factors influencing food habit changes due to the pandemic. Methods: A non-experimental research design, a survey, was executed at Sachibunia, Nijkhamr, Krishnonagar, and Raingamari villages under Batiaghata Upazila in the Khulna District of Bangladesh. Following a simple random sampling technique, data were collected through a field survey using an interview schedule. To show the relations between/among the variables, the chi-square/Fisher exact test was performed. For measuring the degree of relations of those variables, Binary Logistic Regression was used to find out the factors of food habit changes with a 95% confidence interval. For the model, p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The study reveals that 39% of the elderly changed their food habits during COVID-19. Except for the sex and employment status of the elderly, all the sociodemographic factors of this study were associated with food habit changes. Among these sociodemographic factors, age (OR = 2.51, 95% CI, 1.22-5.18), religion (OR = 2.07, 95% CI, 1.13-3.78), spouses' occupation (OR = 3.73, 95% CI, 1.90-7.32), and family head (OR = 3.74, 95% CI, 1.43-9.75) of the elderly influenced their food habits changes. This web-based cross-sectional study aimed to investigate university students' career choices and their determinants. Data were collected from four disciplines within the Social Science School at the Khulna University of Bangladesh. The findings from Pearson's Chi-square revealed a significant association between career choice and age, sex, discipline, level of education, and socioeconomic status. Exploratory factor analysis indicated a three-factor solution, explaining the variance of over 50% and the overall reliability of α = 0.748. The findings from a multinomial logistic regression showed that older and male students had a lower likelihood of becoming teachers, while Sociology students were more interested in teaching. Furthermore, career choices were substantially influenced by students' level of education, job quality, job prospect, and job motive. Considering the global demand for specific skills and knowledge, universities should revise their curricula, integrating the cognitive domain of students with practical knowledge-based education in order to widen the horizon of employment options for university graduates. Applied mixed methods research for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) issues involves multiple researchers and presents numerous responsibilities as well as unforeseen challenges. These challenges together with the often ignored and under-researched area of male sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in Bangladesh require researchers to navigate cultural stigmas associated with SRH and hostile political situations across the country. We conducted a nationwide mixed methods research study to explore the SRHR of male youth. This study is the first of its kind in the context of Bangladesh. The aim of this paper is to describe the challenges experienced and mitigation strategies undertaken to conduct research on the SRHR of young males in Bangladesh. A group of experts, practitioners, service delivery staff and researchers were consulted during the tool development stage. However, challenges in obtaining permission from community members, explanation of SRH-specific topics, and establishing respondents' trust persisted throughout the study. Mitigation strategies included spending time outside of scheduled interview hours and making repeated visits to respondents to establish trust. These strategies allowed for honest discussions over time and served to assure our study respondents that the confidentiality of their data would be protected. In addition to sourcing letters from official authorities, we had conversations with community influential people such as religious leaders and political representatives about the nature of our study and explained to them the implications of the study for the future of young men's health. Moreover, we highlight the political issues of the time and shed light on the ad hoc measures taken to overcome the challenges we faced. This study investigates the effects of remittances and migration on the school dropout rate of left-behind children in rural Bangladesh. Using household survey data from a two-wave panel, conducted by Bangladesh Integrated Household Survey (BIHS) in 2011 and 2015, this study combines the fixed-effects approach with a linear probability model and instrumental variable (IV) strategy to control for the possible endogeneity of migration and remittances. The estimated results show that children from remittance-receiving households are less likely to drop out of school, while parental migration has substantial disruptive effects. Heterogenous analysis indicates that boys seem to benefit from remittances in both primary and secondary school. However, girls do not move beyond primary education even when the household receives additional funds from remittances. The findings also suggest that remittances relax the poor households' budget constraints, making it easier for them to invest in their children. In contrast, the effect of remittances is insignificant for children in wealthier households. Therefore, the results may provide some guidance for policymakers in their efforts to increase the school attainment of children, especially for those who live in migrant households. Women's empowerment is a major concern in the developing world and an integral part of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. Women's empowerment can be significantly affected, both positive and negative, by other household member's decision to migrate. This study explores the consequences of migration for left-behind women in Bangladesh. This study examines the way that women's bargaining power within household is affected, whether positive or negatively, by the migration of other household members. To test this hypothesis, this study presents empirical model that analyses women's empowerment in rural Bangladesh with data from 2011-12 and 2015. I adopt multidimensional measures of empowerment encompassing violence, mobility restrictions, production activities, income, and leadership. The study finds significant evidence that migration of a member decreases some constraints of mobility, and decisionmaking for production activities. The results infer that migration leads to improvements in bargaining power of left-behind women. Skin injuries were assessed in 560 imported and local cattle and water buffaloes at two livestock markets in Bangladesh. The body of each animal was divided into 11 anatomical regions, and abrasions, lacerations, penetrations, ulcerations, bleeding, swelling, hyperkeratosis and scars were recorded for each region. Among the 560 animals studied, 501 were found to have at least one injury. The prevalence of skin injuries was 89 per cent, with 84 per cent of the cattle and 99 per cent of the water buffaloes having obvious skin injuries. The most common types of injury were abrasions that were found in 73 per cent of the animals, followed by scars (50 per cent), and lacerations (41 per cent). Buffaloes had more abrasions (95 per cent), lacerations (57 per cent), swelling (15 per cent) and hyperkeratosis (32 per cent) compared with cattle, whereas scars (60 per cent) were more common in cattle (P<0.001). Within the 11 different anatomical regions, all types of injuries were present but in different proportions. The buttock region had a higher proportion of abrasions (36 per cent) followed by the hip, hindlimb and back regions. Penetration, ulceration, bleeding and swelling were present at lower frequencies in all regions. Causes for these injuries included rubbing against the inside wall of vehicles used for transportation and stock-handler abuse (59 per cent and 13 per cent, respectively). On a global basis, ticks transmit a greater variety of pathogenic microorganisms, protozoa, rickettsiae, spirochaets, and viruses than any other arthropods and are among the most important vectors of diseases affecting livestock, humans, and companion animals. Ticks and tick-borne diseases (TTBDs) affect 80% of the world cattle population and are widely distributed throughout the world, particularly in tropical and subtropical countries including India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Ticks and tick-transmitted infections have coevolved with various wild animal hosts, which constitute the reservoir hosts for ticks and tick-borne pathogens of livestock, pets, and humans. In this region, the livestock sector is suffering from a number of disease problems caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. The article reports the development of Bangle computing and its transformation from paper to digital stage. After the independence of Bangladesh, the government of Bangladesh decided to use Bangla in all government offices. Nevertheless, there was no Bangla typewriter available. One had been developed by the Remington Company, but it had many drawbacks in the key layout, and it was never accepted in Bangladesh. The newly established government at once imported a large number of Munir/Optima Bangla typewriters from Germany that used the Munir keyboard developed by Prof. Munir Chowdhury in 1969. At the same time personal computers began to be used as dedicated terminals for phototypesetting. Apple computers were used to develop Bangla characters as phototypesetters. Linotype used sophisticated software to go beyond 256 ASCII codes and could write Bangla perfectly with only 327 codes. World languages got a new life when Macintosh computers were introduced in January 1984, creating a unique opportunity for all non-Roman languages to be on the computer screen. Together with Page Maker software and MacWrite, Postscript language, and LaserWriters, Macintosh successfully started the DTP revolution in Bangladesh.

Sociodrama and psychodrama have shown promising behavioral and attitudinal changes among men who adhere to toxic masculine attitudes and behavior. However, it is unknown whether such an approach could potentially curb the rising gender-based violence in Bangladesh. This paper presents the findings of in-depth interviews with 12 out of the 40 men in an urban slum in Dhaka who received culturally contextualized sociodrama and psychodrama interventions and 20 close female family members. Following the intervention, the narratives revealed positive behavioral and attitudinal changes in men, including developing empathy, respect towards family members and co-workers, temper management, participation in household chores, a favorable attitude towards condom use, and reduced sexual harassment and drug abuse. Abstract: Water quality used for washing carcasses and abattoir premises was assessed at two sites in southeast Bangladesh. In addition, the effect of discharging untreated washings from slaughter premises on water purity in the receiving waterways was assessed from pH, dissolved oxygen and electrical conductivity measurements. Premises effluents did not have a significant effect on the physico-chemical properties of the water in the receiving canals, as determined from the difference between the 4m upstream and 4m downstream samples, relative to the entry point of the effluent. When a water shortage occurred at one of the premises, water was sourced for washing the carcasses and premises from a canal that was also used for conveying municipal effluent. The discharge water from the premises at this time had a pH, dissolved oxygen content and conductivity of 7.93, 1.84mg/L and 6.06mS/cm respectively, and this would be a threat to survival of freshwater animal life. Objectives: Develop and validate short and rapid forms of the 36-item Menstrual Practice Needs Scale (MPNS-36)., Design: Item reduction prioritised content validity and was informed by cognitive interviews with schoolgirls in Bangladesh, performance of scale items in past research and stakeholder feedback. The original MPNS-36 was revalidated, and short and rapid forms tested in a cross-sectional survey. This was followed by further tests of dimensionality, internal consistency and validity in multiple cross-sectional surveys., Setting and Participants: Short form (MPNS-SF) and rapid form (MPNS-R) measures were developed in a survey of 313 menstruating girls (mean age=13.51) in Khulna, Bangladesh. They were further tested in the baseline survey of the Adolescent Menstrual Experiences and Health Cohort, in Khulna, Bangladesh (891 menstruating girls, mean age=12.40); and the dataset from the MPNS-36 development in Soroti, Uganda (538 menstruating girls, mean age=14.49)., Results: The 18-item short form reflects the six original subscales, with the four core subscales demonstrating good fit in all three samples (Khulna pilot: root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA)=0.064, 90% CI 0.043 to 0.084, Comparative Fit Index (CFI)=0.94, Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI)=0.92. Cohort baseline: RMSEA=0.050, 90% CI 0.039 to 0.062, CFI=0.96, TLI=0.95. Uganda: RMSEA=0.039, 90% CI 0.028 to 0.050, CFI=0.95, TLI=0.94). The 9-item rapid form captures diverse needs. A two-factor structure was the most appropriate but fell short of adequate fit (Khulna pilot: RMSEA=0.092, 90% CI 0.000 to 0.158, CFI=0.93, TLI=0.89). Hypothesised associations between the MPNS scores and other constructs were comparable between the MPNS-36 and MPNS-SF in all populations, and replicated, with attenuation, in the MPNS-R. Internal consistency remained acceptable., Conclusions: The MPNS-SF offers a reliable and valid measure of adolescent girls' menstrual hygiene experience while reducing participant burden, to support implementation and improve measurement in menstrual health research. Background: Menstrual health is essential for gender equity and the well-being of women and girls. Qualitative research has described the burden of poor menstrual health on health and education; however, these impacts have not been quantified, curtailing investment. The Adolescent Menstrual Experiences and Health Cohort (AMEHC) Study aims to describe menstrual health and its trajectories across adolescence, and quantify the relationships between menstrual health and girls' health and education in Khulna, Bangladesh., Methods and Analysis: AMEHC is a prospective longitudinal cohort of 2016 adolescent girls recruited at the commencement of class 6 (secondary school, mean age=12) across 101 schools selected through a proportional random sampling approach. Each year, the cohort will be asked to complete a survey capturing (1) girls' menstrual health and experiences, (2) support for menstrual health, and (3) health and education outcomes. Survey questions were refined through qualitative research, cognitive interviews and pilot survey in the year preceding the cohort. Girls' guardians will be surveyed at baseline and wave 2 to capture their perspectives and household demographics. Annual assessments will capture schools' water, sanitation and hygiene, and support for menstruation and collect data on participants' education, including school attendance and performance (in maths, literacy). Cohort enrolment and baseline survey commenced in February 2023. Follow-up waves are scheduled for 2024, 2025 and 2026, with plans for extension. A nested subcohort will follow 406 post-menarche girls at 2-month intervals throughout 2023 (May, August, October) to describe changes across menstrual periods.
