Microplastics of size <25 μm possess globally transportable features, but the impact of precipitation on their transport remains unclear. Here, microplastics were detected in all 10 studied rainfalls in Beijing, with <25 μm microplastics present in 8 rainfalls. Interestingly, microplastic abundance (7590-136,778 items·m -3 ) was tentatively linked to maximum rainfall intensity, with <25 μm microplastics making up 39.6 (±27.5)% of the total count. The composition of <25 μm microplastics differed from that of larger microplastics, although both mainly comprised polystyrene, polyethylene, and polypropylene. The microplastic communities differed among rainfalls, suggesting that atmospheric transport is a highly dynamic process. The first rainfall exhibited the highest microplastic abundance and community diversity after long-term exposure to dry atmospheric environment. The deposited microplastics were unstable and highly fragmented according to the conditional fragmentation model. The wet deposition rate of the microplastics was calculated as 2-463 μg·m -2 (146-8629 items·m -2 ) per rain, amounting to 25.44 tons per annum in Beijing. Although <25 μm microplastics represented a negligible proportion (0.00-1.24%) of the overall mass load of microplastics, their numerical abundance was high. Our results demonstrate that precipitation is an effective mechanism for removing airborne microplastics, which may enter urban soils and waters, exacerbate microplastic burdens in the environment, and cause potential risk for human health.

Urban rivers are potential sinks for microplastic (MP) contamination in the environment. However, the footprint of MPs in urban rivers is not well understood because it is influenced by natural and anthropogenic factors. This study focused on the occurrence, pollution risk, and potential sources of MPs in surface water and sediments before and after thawing in Shahe River, Beijing. The size distribution, morphological characteristics and polymer types of MPs were analyzed using a micro-Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that the average abundance of MP obviously increased after river thawing, from 1772 ± 1668 items·m -3 to 3877 ± 2517 items·m -3 in surface water and 4776 ± 4817 items·kg -1 to 14,004 ± 5371 items·kg -1 in sediments. The MP polymer types were more diverse after thawing. The main MP type in surface water changed from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) to polypropylene (PP). Moreover, PP was the most common type in sediments. Small-sized MPs (SMPs, 10-300 μm) were dominant in Shahe River, with the proportion increasing from 48.5% to 83.3% in surface water and from 84.3% to 94.4% in sediments after thawing. Although the MP pollution risk increased after thawing, it was still low in the Shahe River. Unfortunately, changes in polymer types caused by thawing and the emergence of toxic polymers increased the ecological risk in the urban river. These results revealed the information of MP contamination before and after thawing, and highlighted the barrier influence of river icing on the migration of MPs. The potential threats of microplastics (MPs) to human health in urban environment have received increasing attention. Small MPs substantially threaten soil organisms and human beings because they are easily ingested and may adsorb other pollutants to form composite compounds. However, roadside soils as a source and a sink of small MPs in urban environments have not been reported. Here, we studied the small-sized MPs (SMPs, < 500 μm) pollution and human exposure analysis by investigating the MPs in roadside soils in Beijing. SMPs contributed to 88.06% of the high average MPs abundance (22001.67 ± 24482.34 items/kg), and were categorized as uncontaminated to moderately contaminated, assessed by the geo-accumulation index (I geo ). SMPs mainly consisted of polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) with morphotypes of fragment and granule. In particular, highly stable and fragmented MPs were discovered by the conditional fragmentation model. And normal-sized MPs (NMPs 500-5000 μm) NMPs could further fragment into SMPs, indicating that SMPs in roadside soil were further enriched. The estimated infant exposure to SMPs was greater than that in adults, and independent of the polymer types and morphotypes. PP is currently the main pollutant, contributing 65% to the estimated human exposure. Combining the conditional fragmentation model and main polymer types, SMPs likely derived from containers/packaging and fertilizers, and affected by atmospheric transport. Simultaneous ecological and health risk assessments of potentially toxic elements in soils and sediments can provide substantial information on their environmental influence at the river-basin scale. Herein, soil and sediment samples were collected from the Guishui River basin to evaluate the pollution situation and the ecological and health risk of potentially toxic elements. Various indexes were utilized for quantitatively assessing their health risks. Pollution assessment by geo-accumulation index showed that Cd had "uncontaminated to moderately polluted" status in the soils and sediments. Potential ecological risk index showed that the Guishui River basin was at low risk in general, but Cd was classified as "moderate or considerable ecological risk" both in the soils and sediments. Health risk assessment calculated human exposure from soils and indicated that both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of the selected potentially toxic elements were lower than the acceptable levels. Health risks posed by potentially toxic elements bio-accumulated in fish, stemming from sediment resuspension, were also assessed. Non-carcinogenic hazard index indicated no adverse health effects on humans via exposure to sediments; however, in general, Cr contributed largely to health risks among the selected potentially toxic elements. Therefore, special attention needs to be paid to the Guishui River basin in the future.
