Objectives: To evaluate Helicobacter pylori antibiotics resistance evolution from 2000 to 2009 to amoxicillin, clarithromycin, metronidazole, tetracycline, levofloxacin and moxifloxacin in Beijing, China. Methods: A total of 374 H. pylori strains isolated from 374 subjects who had undergone upper gastrointestinal endoscopy from 2000 to 2009 were collected and examined by E-test method for antibiotics susceptibility. Results: The average antibiotics resistance rates were 0.3% (amoxicillin), 37.2% (clarithromycin), 63.9% (metronidazole), 1.2% (tetracycline), 50.3% (levofloxacin) and 61.9% (moxifloxacin). Overall resistance to clarithromycin, metronidazole, and fluoroquinolone increased annually (from 14.8 to 65.4%, 38.9 to 78.8%, and 27.1 to 63.5%, in 2000 or 2006–2007 to 2009, respectively). The secondary resistance rates were much higher than primary rates to these antibiotics, which also increased annually in recent 10 years. Conclusions: The trend of clarithromycin, metronidazole, and fluoroquinolone resistance of H. pylori increased over time and the resistance to amoxicillin and tetracycline was infrequent and stable in Beijing. Objectives. The study aimed to assess the prevalence of obesity and the related behavioral risk factors among children in Beijing. Methods. Data were collected as part of a 2004 comprehensive study on obesity and metabolic syndrome among 21 198 children, aged 2–18 years old in Beijing. Four local and international references for the classification of childhood overweight and obesity were compared. Results. The combined prevalence of obesity and overweight among children, aged 2–18 years old, was 18.7%, 21.4%, and 20.1% based on the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) reference, new World Health Organization (WHO) growth standard, and the US 2000 Center for Disease Control and Prevention Growth Charts, respectively; and it was 21.7%, according to the local Chinese body mass index (BMI) reference for school-age children (aged 7–18 years). Physical inactivity, less sleep duration, higher consumption of alcohol, snack food and Western fast food and more screen time were associated with overweight and obesity (p<0.05). Conclusions. Over 20% of children and adolescents in Beijing are overweight or obese. Effort should be made to combat the growing obesity epidemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The prevalence of Helicobacter pylori is higher in developing countries such as China. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of H. pylori in one rural and one urban region of Beijing, China. Materials and Methods: Healthy individuals in rural Pinggu and urban Haidian voluntarily participated in this study. The diagnosis of H. pylori infection was reached using the 13C-urea breath test. Associations between H. pylori and sex, age, living area (i.e. rural vs urban), education level, smoking, and alcohol consumption were evaluated. Results: Of the 1232 included subjects, 54.7% of tested individuals residing in Pinggu and 41.3% in Haidian were positive for H. pylori. In urban region, more individuals were negative for H. pylori (429 of 731), whereas in the rural region, more individuals were positive for H. pylori ( p < .05). Univariate analysis identified geographic area and lower education and annual income as significant factors associated with H. pylori. Men in rural areas were more likely than women in rural areas to be infected, and both men and women in the rural area were more likely to be positive for H. pylori than men and women in the urban area (all p < .05). Conclusions: H. pylori infection is common in both rural and urban regions of Beijing. Residing in a rural area, having a lower family income, and lower education level are significant risk factors associated with infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
