Heterologous boosting is suggested to be of use in populations who have received inactivated COVID-19 vaccines. We aimed to assess the safety and immunogenicity of a heterologous vaccination with the mRNA vaccine CS-2034 versus the inactivated BBIBP-CorV as a fourth dose, as well as the efficacy against the SARS-CoV-2 omicron (BA.5) variant. This trial contains a randomised, double-blind, parallel-controlled study in healthy participants aged 18 years or older (group A) and an open-label cohort in participants 60 years and older (group B), who had received three doses of inactivated whole-virion vaccines at least 6 months before enrolment. Pregnant women and people with major chronic illnesses or a history of allergies were excluded. Eligible participants in group A were stratified by age (18–59 years and ≥60 years) and then randomised by SAS 9.4 in a ratio of 3:1 to receive a dose of the mRNA vaccine (CS-2034, CanSino, Shanghai, China) or inactivated vaccine (BBIBP-CorV, Sinopharm, Beijing, China). Safety and immunogenicity against omicron variants of the fourth dose were evaluated in group A. Participants 60 years and older were involved in group B for safety observations. The primary outcome was geometric mean titres (GMTs) of the neutralising antibodies against omicron and seroconversion rates against BA.5 variant 28 days after the boosting, and incidence of adverse reactions within 28 days. The intention-to-treat group was involved in the safety analysis, while all patients in group A who had blood samples taken before and after the booster were involved in the immunogenicity analysis. This trial was registered at the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry Centre (ChiCTR2200064575). Between Oct 13, and Nov 22, 2022, 320 participants were enrolled in group A (240 in the CS-2034 group and 80 in the BBIBP-CorV group) and 113 in group B. Adverse reactions after vaccination were more frequent in CS-2034 recipients (158 [44·8%]) than BBIBP-CorV recipients (17 [21·3%], p<0·0001). However, most adverse reactions were mild or moderate, with grade 3 adverse reactions only reported by eight (2%) of 353 participants receiving CS-2034. Heterologous boosting with CS-2034 elicited 14·4-fold (GMT 229·3, 95% CI 202·7–259·4 vs 15·9, 13·1–19·4) higher concentration of neutralising antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 omicron variant BA.5 than did homologous boosting with BBIBP-CorV. The seroconversion rates of SARS-CoV-2-specific neutralising antibody responses were much higher in the mRNA heterologous booster regimen compared with BBIBP-CorV homologous booster regimen (original strain 47 [100%] of 47 vs three [18·8%] of 16; BA.1 45 [95·8%] of 48 vs two [12·5%] 16; and BA.5 233 [98·3%] of 240 vs 15 [18·8%] of 80 by day 28). Both the administration of mRNA vaccine CS-2034 and inactivated vaccine BBIBP-CorV as a fourth dose were well tolerated. Heterologous boosting with mRNA vaccine CS-2034 induced higher immune responses and protection against symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 omicron infections compared with homologous boosting, which could support the emergency use authorisation of CS-2034 in adults. Geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) has been demonstrated as an effective tool for exploring spatiotemporal data under spatial and temporal heterogeneity. Exploiting the advantages of the two most popular GTWR methods, we propose an alternative GTWR with a good balance between complexity and interpretability via a unilateral temporal weighting scheme called unilateral GTWR (UGTWR). When compared to the other two popular GTWR methods, the simulation experiment shows that UGTWR has comparable estimation accuracy and model fit, but it is more efficient. Furthermore, we propose its multiscale extension, coined multiscale UGTWR (MUGTWR), to characterize the spatiotemporal dynamic regression relationships at multiple scales. The proposed MUGTWR was applied to the analysis of house prices in the period of 2014–2018 in Beijing as a case study. Our analysis reveals that MUGTWR can effectively capture different levels of spatiotemporal heterogeneity in selected factors affecting house prices at different scales. Background Ducks have a typical avian karyotype that consists of macro- and microchromosomes, but a pair of much less differentiated ZW sex chromosomes compared to chickens. To elucidate the evolution of chromosome architectures between ducks and chickens, and between birds and mammals, we produced a nearly complete chromosomal assembly of a female Pekin duck by combining long-read sequencing and multiplatform scaffolding techniques. Results A major improvement of genome assembly and annotation quality resulted from the successful resolution of lineage-specific propagated repeats that fragmented the previous Illumina-based assembly. We found that the duck topologically associated domains (TAD) are demarcated by putative binding sites of the insulator protein CTCF, housekeeping genes, or transitions of active/inactive chromatin compartments, indicating conserved mechanisms of spatial chromosome folding with mammals. There are extensive overlaps of TAD boundaries between duck and chicken, and also between the TAD boundaries and chromosome inversion breakpoints. This suggests strong natural selection pressure on maintaining regulatory domain integrity, or vulnerability of TAD boundaries to DNA double-strand breaks. The duck W chromosome retains 2.5-fold more genes relative to chicken. Similar to the independently evolved human Y chromosome, the duck W evolved massive dispersed palindromic structures, and a pattern of sequence divergence with the Z chromosome that reflects stepwise suppression of homologous recombination. Conclusions Our results provide novel insights into the conserved and convergently evolved chromosome features of birds and mammals, and also importantly add to the genomic resources for poultry studies. In the current urban rail transit systems, nearly 15% of passengers are noncommuter travelers who use single-trip ticket cards (ticket cards). Accordingly, the effective management of ticket cards is of great importance. This article suggests a time series model for use in predicting ticket card storage based on the characteristics of ticket cards collected by an automatic fare collection (AFC) system. The distribution cycle, station types, and distribution volume of each station are also determined. Then, drawing on small package transportation feasibility theory, an unbalanced distribution model between production and demand (unbalanced distribution model), as well as a hybrid distribution model of loading and unloading (hybrid distribution model), is established. Application of these models to the Beijing Subway system is used to verify the efficiency and feasibility of such a hybrid distribution model. Air quality is often assessed using particulate matter (PM) mass concentration without considering its toxicity, thus possibly leading to improper control policies or inadequate health protection. Here, we studied differences in oxidative potentials (OPs) of PM samples collected using automobile air conditioning (AC) filters from 19 global cities, as well as influences from microbial contents. Dithiothreitol (DTT) assay showed remarkable differences in the PM OPs among cities (p -values ≤ 0.001, Kruskal-Wallis test). For example, the normalized index of oxidant generation (NIOG) of PM samples in San Francisco (2.20 × 10−2, annual average PM 10 = 16 μg/m3) was found to be twice that in Beijing (1.14 × 10−2, annual average PM 10 = 135 μg/m3). Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) assay found that PM-borne endotoxin ranged from 12.16 EU/mg (Florianopolis, Brazil) to 2518.23 EU/mg (Chennai, India) among cities. Besides, culturing method and real-time qPCR revealed significant differences of up to ∼100-fold in both bacterial and fungal levels among 19 cities. Spearman's correlation analysis implied that PM-borne microbes such as bacteria and fungi as well as metals could strongly influence the PM OP. As an example, our results in Xi'an, China further suggest that the PM 2.5 OP evolves for a particular city over the time, which is attributable to both the urbanization and air pollution control measures. This work highlights the importance in optimizing the current air quality control measures by considering the toxicity factor and its microbial constituents. 108 ambient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured continuously at a time resolution of an hour using an online gas chromatography–frame ionization detector/mass spectrometry (GC–FID/MS) in October 2014 in Beijing, and positive matrix factorization (PMF) was performed with online data. The evolution process and causes for high levels of VOCs during a haze event were investigated through comprehensive analysis. Results show that mixing ratios of VOCs during the haze event (89.29 ppbv) were 2 to 5 times as that in non-haze days, There was a distinct accumulation process of VOCs at the beginning of the haze event, and the mixing ratios of VOCs maintained at the high levels until to the end of pollution when the mixing ratios of ambient VOCs recovered to the normal concentration levels in a few hours. Some reactive and toxic species increased remarkably as well, which indicates a potential health risk to the public in terms of VOCs. Eight sources were resolved by PMF, and results revealed gasoline exhaust was the largest contributor (32–46%) to the ambient VOCs in Beijing. Emissions of gasoline exhaust surged from 13.46 to 40.36 ppbv, with a similar variation pattern to total VOCs, indicating that high levels of VOCs were largely driven to by expanded vehicular emissions. Emissions of biomass burning also increased noticeably (from 2.32 to 11.12 ppbv), and backward trajectories analysis indicated regional transport of biomass burning emissions. Our findings suggested that extremely high levels of VOCs during the haze event was primarily attributed to vehicular emissions, biomass burning and regional transport, as well as stationary synoptic conditions. 102 volatile organic compound (VOC) species were measured online using a gas chromatography–mass spectrometry/flame ionization detector (GC–MS/FID) at an urban site in Beijing in 11 August to 3 September 2015, when a series of rigorous air quality control measures were implemented in Beijing city and neighbouring provinces. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) was applied to identify emission sources from 1 h averaged values of VOC data. Based on the online VOC data and the PMF analysis results, the effectiveness of different control measures were investigated. The PMF results were compared with an emission inventory data. Results show that the rigorous air quality restrictions implemented were successful. The averaged ambient VOC mixing ratios during the emission control period and non-control period were 27.53 and 45.42 ppbv, respectively. The mixing ratios of total VOC during the control period were reduced by 40%. Alkanes were the most abundant chemical group in the two periods, followed by oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs). Almost all quantified VOC species decreased during the control period. Tracers of industrial sources and vehicle exhaust reduced most, including some halocarbons, esters and aromatics. Eight sources were resolved by online PMF analysis for ambient VOCs in Beijing. Contributions of those sources varied significantly during the control and non-control period. Compared with the values before control, contributions of vehicle-related sources were most reduced, followed by solvent utilization. Reductions of vehicle-related sources, solvent utilization, secondary formation, fuel combustion, and biogenic were responsible for 65%, 19%, 10%, 5%, and 1% of the reductions in ambient VOCs. Both PMF results and emission inventory data indicated that the control measure on traffic was very effective in reducing ambient VOCs in Beijing, with the emission reductions of about 50%. This study aimed to translate into Chinese the Diabetes Care Profile (DCP), a measure of psychosocial factors and diabetes treatment, and to test the reliability and validity of the instrument within a Chinese population. The English version of the DCP was translated into Chinese following the standard translation methodology with consideration to cultural adaptation. The questionnaire was administered to 313 people with type 2 diabetes in an urban community in Beijing, China. Cronbach’s α coefficient was used to calculate reliabilities, which ranged from .55 to .86 on DCP subscales. Mean values on the DCP differed by diabetes treatment as expected and supports the construct validity of the DCP. The overall score on the DCP correlated well both with blood glucose levels and with a validated measure of a Chinese version of the Diabetes Specific Quality of Life scale, thus supporting the DCP’s criterion validity. Sewage epidemiology has been proven as an effective approach to estimate the use of illicit drugs by a population. In this study, sewage analysis was applied to examine the patterns of amphetamine (AMP) and methamphetamine (METH) uses in the urban area of Beijing. Influent and effluent samples were collected from all the thirteen sewage treatment plants (STPs) in the urban area during two sampling campaigns. METH concentrations in influents were found to range from several tens to several hundred ng · L − 1 , whereas AMP concentrations ranged from several to several tens ng · L − 1 . The concentration ratios between AMP and METH in influents at most STPs were close to the rate of AMP excretion following METH ingestion, indicating that AMP in sewage in Beijing was predominately from the metabolism of METH. Much higher METH loads were observed in the center part of the urban area in Beijing, indicating a strong correlation between METH use and economic level and entertainment activities. Seasonal variation in METH loads was significant, with greater use in summer than in winter. Significant difference in METH loads between weekdays and weekend days were observed in winter but not in summer. No clear trend in diurnal variation of METH use was observed. Nearly complete removal of METH occurred at the STPS in Beijing. Apparent removal rates of AMP were lower than those of METH, likely due to degradation of METH into AMP during the wastewater treatment processes. In summary, this study represents the first application of sewage epidemiology to the entire urban population of a metropolitan in mainland China and provided an overview of METH and AMP uses in the city. Abstract: The transport of dissolved inorganic nitrogen in wetlands was investigated in the Yeyahu National Preserve of Beijing, China, from July to December 2011. Stable isotope of nitrogen (15N) as NH4 + was added to experimental mesocosms vegetated by seven common wetland plants. The 15N abundance in soil and various plant parts were measured at prescribed time intervals during the 49-day experimental period. Rapid 15N enrichments were found in soil and aquatic plants during the first sampling event at day 3 and typically increased linearly during the experimental period. Highest 15N enrichment was found in submerged plants, followed by emergent plants and soil. No differences in δ 15N values were found among leaves and stems of all submerged plants (Potamogeton pusillus, Potamogeton perfoliatus, Najas marina, Ceratophyllum demersum), suggesting that these plant structures are equally effective in nitrogen assimilation. The roots of P. perfoliatus displayed the lowest enrichment compared to the stems and leaves. Such results indicate that submerged plant roots may have a relatively weak role in nitrogen assimilation. The two emergent plants (Phragmites australis and Typha orientalis) showed no differences in δ 15N values among all plant parts, suggesting rapid translocation of nitrogen from roots to other portions. This experiment demonstrates that wetland soil and plant stems and leaves are major sinks for dissolved nitrogen from the surface water and provides valuable insight into nitrogen retention and transport pathways in various wetland plants. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of spherical aberration on visual acuity by correcting and inducing spherical aberration using an adaptive optics vision simulator. Setting: Laboratory of Vision Science, Capital Medical University, Beijing, and Institute of Optics and Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chengdu, China. Methods: An adaptive optics vision simulator comprising a wavefront sensor and a 37-segmented deformable mirror was used to correct and induce aberrations of the eye. The effective ocular wavefront aberration was manipulated with the deformable mirror, as the resulting visual performance was simultaneously measured. Subjective visual acuity measurements were performed with a 6.0 mm pupil. Visual acuity at different contrasts was measured when spherical aberration was fully corrected and the other natural aberrations in the eye were present and when spherical aberration values were induced with the other aberrations corrected. Results: The natural root-mean-square (RMS) value of spherical aberration in the 8 subjects examined was between −0.11 μm and 0.14 μm. There was no significant improvement in visual acuity with spherical aberration corrected and the subjects'' natural aberrations present. When all aberrations were corrected, a decrease in visual acuity occurred when spherical aberration RMS was induced at 0.2 μm and 0.3 μm. Conclusions: When fluctuation of other natural aberrations in the eye were present, there was a slight effect on visual acuity when the spherical aberration RMS was approximately 0.1 μm. Therefore, an RMS value of 0.1 μm could be an acceptable amount of spherical aberration when correcting spherical aberrations. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Aerosol optical properties are important indices for monitoring atmospheric aerosol pollution. In this study, we report the seasonal and diurnal variability of major aerosol optical parameters, including scattering coefficient (σ s), absorbing coefficient (σ a), single scattering albedo (SSA), together with PM 2.5 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm) and PM 10 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 10 μm) mass concentrations measured at an urban site in Beijing from September 2017 to August 2019. The relationships between these aerosol properties with meteorological conditions, in particular, the mixing layer height (MLH), wind speed, and wind direction, are further investigated. Results show that the annual average values of PM 2.5 and PM 10 mass concentrations, σ s , and σ a during the study period are 54 ± 54 μg/m3, 100 ± 72 μg/m3, 170 ± 180 Mm−1, 17 ± 15 Mm−1 respectively, which are much lower than those previously reported, indicating the effectiveness of strict pollution control strategies implemented in recent years. SSA is calculated with σ s and σ a , whose annual average value is 0.88 ± 0.07. Seasonally, σ a exhibits dual peaks except in summer, PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentrations are the highest value in the spring, whereas σ s has the highest value in the summer with a secondary peak in the spring. The diurnal cycle of σ a is highly anti-correlated with that of the MLH. For σ s , PM 2.5 and PM 10 , their diurnal cycles often peak around noon and are in phase with the MLH in the spring and summer, which may be associated with the photochemical production of secondary aerosols. σ s , σ a , PM 10 , and PM 2.5 concentrations are inversely related to wind speed, but PM 10 starts to increase as wind speed exceeds 4 m/s, possibly caused by dust and catkins. The increase in wind speed also weakens the aerosol-MLH relationship. The association between PM 2.5 (particulate matter ≤ 2.5 µm) short-term exposure and its health effect is non-linear from the epidemiological studies. And this nonlinearity is suggested to be related with the PM 2.5 heterogeneity, however, the underlying biological mechanism is still unclear. Here, a total of 38 PM 2.5 filters were collected continuously for three weeks in winter Beijing, with the ambient PM 2.5 varying between 10 and 270 µg/m3. Human monocytes-derived macrophages (THP-1) were treated with PM 2.5 water-soluble elutes at 10 µg/mL to investigate the PM 2.5 short-term exposure effect from a proinflammatory perspective. The proinflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor (TNF) induced by the PM 2.5 elutes at equal concentrations were unequal, showing the heterogeneity of PM 2.5 proinflammatory potentials. Of the various chemical and biological components, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) showed a strong positive association with the TNF heterogeneity. However, some outliers were observed among the TNF-LPS association. Specifically, for PM 2.5 from relatively clean air episodes, the higher LPS amount corresponded to relatively low TNF levels. And this phenomenon was also observed in the promotion tests by treating macrophages with PM 2.5 elutes dosed with additional trace LPS. Gene expression analysis indicated the involvement of oxidative-stress related genes in the LPS signaling pathway. Therefore, a potential oxidative-stress-mediated suppression on the PM 2.5 -borne LPS proinflammatory effect was proposed to be accounted for the outliers. Overall, the results showed the differential role of LPS in the heterogeneity of PM 2.5 proinflammatory effects from a component-based perspective. • A simplified runoff temperature model is established based on the conservation of heat. • On the basis of the model, the formula for calculating the event mean temperatures is derived. • The model and formula were applied and evaluated in the catchment. • Both the model and the formula have desired accuracy. • Provides a method to calculate the heat of stormwater runoff from a catchment area. The stormwater runoff formed on the urban impervious surface in summer may carry a large amount of heat, which will have a negative impact on the urban receiving water bodies. In order to simulate the process of runoff generation, confluence, and heat transfer, evaluate the degree of thermal pollution of stormwater runoff, and better quantify the heat of stormwater runoff, a simplified urban stormwater runoff temperature model is developed according to the runoff process of pervious surface and impervious surface and pipe network during rainfall, combined with the heat transfer principle in the process, to calculate the runoff flow and temperature from the small catchment. The heat transfer model mainly considers the heat exchange between runoff and surface, runoff and atmosphere, and runoff and pipe. The proposed model was evaluated by monitoring of typical urban catchment in the summer of 2021–2022, and the calculation formula of Event Mean Temperatures (EMT) in the catchment was proposed based on the model principle. The average root mean square error (RMSE) between the predicted value and the monitoring value of the model is 0.6 ℃. Long duration rainfall and short duration high intensity rainfall could lead to large simulation errors. Runoff temperature is easily affected by air temperature, solar radiation, pre-rain temperature and type of impervious surface. The average error between the EMT calculated by the formula and the actual monitoring EMT is 0.6 ℃, and its significant error rainfall frequency is consistent with the model. The results show that the model and formula can be used to predict the runoff heat in typical catchments, providing a more convenient method for the analysis of runoff heat in small catchments. For curbing the global climate crisis, China has set an ambitious target of peak carbon emissions by 2030. Beijing, the capital of China, has implemented a carbon reduction policy since 2012. Using the reduced and generalized forms of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC), we deduce that both the cubic EKC and the genetic algorithm-based EKC have an N-shape. The first turning point of the three-order EKC occurs around 2011, demonstrating the effectiveness of the carbon reduction policy. However, the time series model predicts that Beijing will reach the second turning point around 2026, when the gross domestic product (GDP) is about CNY 5000 billion and carbon emissions will begin to increase again. Interpretable machine learning is proposed to explore the socio-economic drivers in carbon emissions, indicating that total energy consumption and GDP contribute the most. Therefore, we should accelerate the upgrading of energy consumption and adjust the industrial structure, thus facilitating Beijing to its peak carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality. Along with the rise of democratic consciousness and the slowdown of urbanization and economic growth speed, the community development path in contemporary China is under transition, aiming at a more bottom-up and small-scale planning and design process. In order to reveal how the "social capital" affects the public participation and social governance in the process of community micro-regeneration in China, this paper takes two old communities in Chaoyang District of Beijing as examples, to compare the impacts of various social capital levels on participatory community planning and design. The study proves the significance of community social capital and community self-government for the success of residents' participation and community regeneration, as well as providing suggestions on how to improve public participation effects by strengthening social capital of communities. Enterobacter hormaechei is an opportunistic pathogen and is found in a large variety of food including animal-derived food. In recent years, bacteria present a severe clinical challenge due to their increasing resistance to antibiotics. Bacteriophages have gained attention as a new antibacterial strategy. In this study, we isolated a novel E. hormaechei bacteriophage IME278 from hospital sewage in Beijing, China. Bacteriophage IME278 had a double-stranded linear DNA genome with 40,164 bp and 51.99% GC content. Whole-genome alignments showed IME278 shared 87% homology with other phages in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database. And phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that IME278 was highly similar to bacteriophages belonging to the genus Kayfunavirus , family Autographiviridae, indicating IME278 can be classified as a new member of the Autographiviridae family. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that IME278 had an icosahedral head 51.72 nm in diameter and a tail 151.28 nm in length. Bacteriophage IME278 was able to survive under high temperature (50 °C–70 °C) and its activity decreased significantly above 70 °C and almost completely inactivated at 80 °C. Bacteriophage IME278 could survive in a wide pH range (4.0–11.0) and it was stable in chloroform (up to 5%). The phage was sensitive to UV irradiation. Bacteriophage IME278 had a latent period of 40 min and reached a plateau stage at 150 min and its cleavage was approximately 8.21 × 108/3.66 × 108 = 2.24. The biocontrol potential of bacteriophage IME278 was evaluated in a model that artificially contaminated pork with E. hormaechei 529 and the result revealed that IME278 could effectively control bacterial contamination on pork. In 1972, Nobel laureate Youyou Tu's research team conducted clinical trials on the dried material of Artemisia annua L. from Beijing extracted by ether and then treated with alkali (called "ether neutral dry"), which showed that artemisinin was not the only antimalarial component contained. The biosynthesis of sesquiterpenoids in A. annua has increased exponentially after unremitting cultivation efforts, and the plant resources are now quite different from those in the 1970s. In consideration of emerging artemisinin resistance, it is of great theoretical and practical value to further study the antimalarial activity of A. annua and explore its causes. The purpose of this study is to clarify scientific questions, such as "What ingredients are synergistic with artemisinin in A. annua?", and "Are there non-artemisinin antimalarial ingredients in A. annua?". In this paper, Beijing wild A. annua was used as a control and two representative cultivation species of A. annua were selected to evaluate the antimalarial activity of the herbal medicine. The antimalarial activity of different extracts on mice was studied using the Peters' four-day suppressive test. UPLC-Q-TOF-MS was used to obtain mass spectrum data for all samples, and a UNIFI platform was used for identification. A multivariate statistical method was used to screen the different compounds with positive correlations. The antimalarial activity of different components from the ether extract and alkali treatments was determined and antimalarial components other than artemisinin were obtained. A total of 24 flavonoids, 68 sesquiterpenoids and 21 other compounds were identified. Compounds associated with differential antimalarial activity were identified. The material basis for the antimalarial activity of A. annua was clarified. The antimalarial components of A. annua include two categories: first, artemisinin and non-artemisinin antimalarial active components, of which the non-artemisinin antimalarial active components may include 5α-hydroperoxy-eudesma-4(15),11-diene; second, several antimalarial synergistic ingredients in A. annua, including arteanniun B, arteanniun B analogues and polymethoxy flavonoids. Simple Summary: The Xinjiang Uyghur autonomous region is the most important area for cotton production in China, where recycling of cotton stalks (CS) as a useful resource should be encouraged. This article investigated the technical feasibility of CS as a feed and fertilizer based on the transformation of P. brevitarsis larvae. Decomposition inoculant, fermentation duration, and cattle manure ratio were considered the key factors affecting the transformation capability of P. brevitarsis larvae on CS. The research showed that 40–50% of cattle manure, 0.1% VT inoculant, and a fermentation duration of 25–30 days were the optimal technical parameters. The protein content of the larval body was as high as 52.49%, and the fat content was 11.7%. The organic matter content of frass (larvae dung-sand) was 54.8%, and the content of total nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (TNPK) was 9.04%, which is twice more than that of the organic fertilizer standard (NY525-2021, Beijing, China, TNPK ≥ 4.0%). The application of CS as feed (larval body) and fertilizer (larvae dung-sand) is feasible, promoting the utilization of both CS and cattle manure. Cotton stalks (CS) are a potential agricultural biomass resource. We investigated the use of CS as a feed for Proteatia brevitarsis Lewis larvae and the resulting frass (larvae dung-sand) as a fertilizer. Based on a three-factor experiment (decomposition inoculant, fermentation duration, and cattle manure ratio), the optimal parameters for the transformation of CS using P. brevitarsis larvae were determined as 40–50% of cattle manure, the use of VT inoculant and a fermentation duration of 25–30 days. Regarding the products of the transformation, the protein content of the larval body was as high as 52.49%, and the fat content was 11.7%, which is a suitable-quality insect protein source. The organic matter content of larvae dung-sand was 54.8%, and the content of total nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (TNPK) was 9.04%, which is twice more than that of the organic fertilizer standard (NY525-2021, Beijing, China, TNPK ≥ 4.0%), and larvae dung-sand has the potential of fertilizer application. In this study, an IROM-ES (inexact regional optimization model for energy systems) is developed with considering NESs (new energy sources) under uncertainty. The IROM-ES integrates techniques of ILP (interval linear programming), MLP (mixed-integer linear programming) and CCP (chance-constrained programming). In the IROM-ES, multiple uncertainties expressed as intervals and stochastic numbers are allowed to be incorporated into the framework within the multi-period and multi-option contexts. The IROM-ES is then applied to a case study of Fengtai District, Beijing, China, in which the objective is to minimize system cost under a series of constraints with considering social, economic and environmental concerns. Solutions regarding energy-supply schemes, NESs utilization, capacity-expansion plans and air pollutants control in a cost-effective manner have been generated to satisfy the urban energy and atmosphere quality demands under different violation risks. Results reveal that the changes in violation risks would lead to different optimal planning schemes. A higher violation risk would correspond to a higher probability of system-constraint violation and a lower system cost; conversely, a lower violation risk would lead to an increased strictness of the constraints or a narrower decision space, then to a higher system cost. Moreover, results indicate that the urban electricity supply from NESs would be relatively high (suggested more than 14.40%). Furthermore, to improve the reliability of decisions, post-optimization analyses (including modeling comparisons, alternatives setting as well as system triangulation analysis) are preformed to examine which scheme could be more appropriate, which can facilitate providing strategy in different scenarios for the decision makers. Background: Retinal vasculopathy including retinal artery occlusion (RAO) or retinal vein occlusion (RVO) was recently found to occur more frequently in antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) patients than non-APS patients. This study aims to investigate the clinical manifestation and risk factors of retinal vasculopathy among APS patients. Methods: In this single-center prospective cohort study, we evaluated APS patients with or without retinal vasculopathy during 2018–2020 at Peking Union Medical College Hospital. Clinical variables were compared, and a logistical regression model was built to explore risk factors. Hierarchical cluster analysis using Euclidean distances was applied to identify clusters of variables. Results: A total of 310 APS patients (67.4% female, mean age 38.1 years) were included, of whom 18 (5.8%) were diagnosed with retinal vasculopathy (9 with RVO and 9 with RAO). No significant differences were found among most demographic characteristics, clinical manifestations, or antibody profiles. APS-related heart valve disease (odds ratio OR 13.66, 95% confidence interval CI 4.55–40.98), APS nephropathy (OR 12.77, 95% CI 4.04–40.35), and thrombocytopenia (OR 2.63, 95% CI 1.01–6.89) were predictive of retinal vasculopathy. APS-related heart valve disease and nephropathy were also found to be statistically significant predictors in multivariate logistical regression analysis. Non-criteria manifestations were aggregated with retinal vasculopathy from a cluster analysis of variables. Conclusion: Patients with APS-related heart valve disease and nephropathy suffered a higher risk of retinal vasculopathy. We conducted a longitudinal study among 1,450,830 Chinese children aged 6–19 years from Beijing and Zhongshan in China during 2005–2018 to examine the associations of PM 2.5 and its chemical constituents with incident OWOB risk. We extracted PM 2.5 mass and five main component exposure from Tracking Air Pollution in China (TAP) dataset. Cox proportional hazards models were applied to quantify exposure–response associations. We further performed principal component analysis (PCA) to handle the multi-collinearity and used quantile g-computation (QGC) approach to analyze the impacts of exposure mixtures. Additionally, we selected 125,863 children with at least 8 physical examination measurements and combined group-based trajectory models (GBTM) with multinomial logistic regression models to explore the impacts of exposure to PM 2.5 mass and five constituents on BMI and BMI Z-score trajectories during 6–19 years. We observed each interquartile range increment in PM 2.5 exposure was significantly associated with a 5.1 % increase in the risk of incident OWOB (95 % confidence Interval [CI]: 1.036–1.066). We also found black carbon, sulfate, organic matter, often linked to fossil combustion, had comparable or larger estimates of the effect (HR = 1.139–1.153) than PM 2.5. Furthermore, Exposure to PM 2.5 mass, sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, organic matter and black carbon was significantly associated with an increased odds of being in a larger BMI trajectory and being assigned to persistent OWOB trajectory. Our findings provide evidence that the constituents mainly from fossil fuel combustion may have a perceptible influence on increased OWOB risk associated with PM 2.5 exposure in China. Objective: Osteonecrosis (ON), which can lead to physical disability, is a common complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of ON and identify possible risk factors in Chinese SLE patients. Methods: SLE patients who fulfilled the 1997 American College of Rheumatology SLE classification criteria were recruited from the Peking Union Medical College Hospital. The chi-square test (χ 2 test) and multivariate regression analyses were used to evaluate risk factors. The Cox proportional-hazards model was used to construct the survival curves and estimate the simultaneous effects of prognostic factors on survival. Results: We consecutively enrolled 1,158 patients, of which 88 patients (7.6%) developed ON. Among ON patients, 57.1% of patients had isolated femoral head necrosis and 42.9% had multiple joint involvement. The mean age of ON patients (24.62 ± 8.89 years) was significantly younger than SLE patients without ON (27.23 ± 10.16 years, p = 0.09). The ON group presented with a much longer disease course (10.68 ± 5.97 years, p < 0.001) and increased incidence of arthritis, kidney, and central nervous system (CNS) involvement (65.9% [ p < 0.05], 57.6% [ p < 0.05], and 16.5% [ p < 0.05], respectively, in the ON group). ON patients were more likely to be treated with glucocorticoid (GC) and to receive a high dose of prednisolone at the initial stage of SLE (p < 0.05). The percentage of patients who received hydroxychloroquine was much higher in the control group (p < 0.001). Cox regression analysis suggested that CNS involvement and GC therapy were two independent risk factors for ON in SLE patients. The presence of anti-phospholipid antibodies (aPLs) was a risk factor for multiple joint necrosis (odds ratio: 6.28, p = 0.009). Conclusions: ON remains a serious and irreversible complication in SLE. In addition to glucocorticoid therapy, we found that CNS system involvement was a risk factor for ON, while the administration of hydroxychloroquine was a protective factor. The clinical characteristics of multiple site ON patients were distinct from isolated femoral head necrosis patients. The presence of aPLs was a risk factor for multiple site osteonecrosis. Hyperspectral data play an important role in monitoring and protecting wetlands because it not only offers high resolution and wide observation range but also reveal plant information. To explore the hyperspectral characteristics of wetland plants and their applicability in identification, in situ hyperspectral data for 15 species of wetland plants were collected from the Hanshiqiao Wetland Nature Reserve in Beijing, a constructed wetland. Then, first derivative, second derivative, and logarithmic transformation of the reciprocal of the hyperspectral reflectance data were performed using three data conversion methods (principal component analysis, vegetation index, and full-band spectrum) to identify characteristic hyperspectral variables. Four classifiers were compared, namely, support vector machine, decision tree, back-propagation neural network, and random forest. The results demonstrated that: (1) for a comprehensive comparison of the four spectral features data, logarithmic treatment of the reciprocal significantly improved the identification accuracy; (2) for the three data conversion methods for identifying spectral characteristics, the identification accuracy based on the full-band spectrum was better than the other two data forms, and the identification effectiveness of principal component analysis was better than that of the vegetation index; (3) because of differences in plant types and data formats, none of the four classifiers had obvious advantages or disadvantages over the others; and (4) the identification results for all plant statistics further verified the applicability of full-band spectrum data for plant identification. The results showed that the vegetation index and principal component variables reduced the calculation time but did not improve the identification accuracy. • Phage vB_ValP_IME234 is a novel virulent phage belonging to the podoviridae family, which can infect both V. alginolyticus and vibrio parahaemolyticus. • No integrase gene was detected, suggesting the phage is not temperate — which is important for application. • There were lysis genes and no antibiotic resistance or potential virulence genes in phage vB_ValP_IME234 genome, so this phage may serve as potential agents for phage therapy. Bacterial infections have a negative impact on both animal husbandry industry and medicine, and increasing bacterial drug resistance exacerbates this adverse impact. Phages show promise as an alternative to drugs against drug-resistant bacteria. In this study, a novel virulent bacteriophage (phage) vB_ValP_IME234 against Vibrio alginolyticus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus was isolated from freshwater in Beijing, China. Phage vB_ValP_IME234 had an isometric head (59 nm in diameter) and a short tail (10 nm long), belonging to Podoviridae family. Its complete genome is liner double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) with a GC content of 41.6% while encoding 61 putative proteins. Three transfer RNA (tRNA) and no lysogenic gene was detected. vB_ValP_IME234 had a polyvalent infectivity, a burst of 390 PFU/cell, and is stable under different temperatures (4 °C to 50 °C) and pH (6.0 to 10.0) values. Host range test showed that vB_ValP_IME234 has the ability to infect seven strains of Vibrio in total. Phylogenetic analyses based on terminase and capsid suggested that this phage had a close relationship with Vibrio phages. The HEAVEN-I KrF excimer laser facility is housed at the China Institute of Atomic Energy, Beijing, China. There are six laser beams at this facility, whose combined energy is up to 100 J with a pulsewidth of 28 ns at a wavelength of 248 nm. The uniformity distribution of laser intensity is less than 2%. The diameter of the focal spots was about $500~\mu \text{m}$ , producing a laser intensity of about 1012 W/cm2. HEAVEN-I’s capability to provide extremely uniform focal profiles and its deep ultraviolet (UV) wavelength facilitate the conducting of experiments with laser-produced shocks with negligible effects from laser imperfections and laser–plasma instability. Thus, the laser facility was used in the research of high-energy-density physics and other related field physical experiments, such as the shock dynamics and the equation of state at high pressure, simulation of space debris, and direct laser-driven quasi-isentropic compression. Sidelight shadow photography and imaging velocity interferometer system for any reflector (VISAR) were developed for the purpose of active diagnostics for physical experiments. Objective. To investigate the effect of intensive management and achieving the target control more than 3 times on endpoint events during 9 consecutive years' annual assessment in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) patients in the Sanlitun Community Health Service Center in Beijing, including blood glucose, blood pressure, lipids profiles, and the joint target control. Methods. In Beijing Community Diabetes Study (BCDS), 224 patients with T2DM from the Sanlitun Community Health Service Center were enrolled in 2008. All patients were randomly assigned to the intensive management group (n = 113) and the standard management group (n = 111). All patients were followed up for nine consecutive years from January 2009 to December 2017. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were detected as the main indexes, and the endpoint events were also carried out at the same time. The endpoint events were analyzed by using survival analysis (Kaplan–Meier method) based on management grouping and whether achieving the target control more than 3 times or not. Results. During the nine-year follow-up, the abscission number was 35 (14.29%), among which 14 (12.39%) was in the intensive management group and 21 (18.92%) was in the standard management group. The incidence of diabetic retinopathy (6 cases, 5.41%) and diabetic nephropathy (13 cases, 11.71%) in the standard management group was significantly higher than that in the intensive management group (1 case, 0.88%; 5 cases, 4.42%), respectively (P < 0.05). However, there were no significant differences on the other endpoint events between the two groups (P > 0.05). All-cause death was 23 cases, in which patients who achieved the target control (HbA1c and LDL-C) and the joint target control more than 3 times were significantly lower than that of less than 3 times (P < 0.05). As far as death caused by cardiovascular events, cerebrovascular events, and newly onset coronary heart disease are concerned, there were no significant differences on the aforementioned endpoint events between the two groups based on target control more than 3 times or not (P > 0.05). There were less incidence of new onset cerebrovascular events, stenosis or occlusion of large arteries, and diabetic microvascular complications in patients who achieved target control (HbA1c and LDL-C) and the joint target control more than 3 times than those with target control less than 3 times (P < 0.05). Conclusions. The intensive management can effectively reduce the occurrence of microvascular complications. The incidence of all-cause death and the other endpoint events decreased in T2DM patients who achieved the joint target control more than 3 times during the nine-year management, which improved survival time and life quality. The purpose of this study was to determine if there are any genetic changes with whole-exome sequencing associated with distal vaginal atresia. This was a retrospective genetics study of 5 patients who presented with distal vaginal atresia who were recruited between 2017 and 2018. Whole-exome sequencing was performed in each subject with distal vaginal atresia. Sanger sequencing was used to confirm the potential causative genetic mutation. The main outcome measure was the rare mutations potentially associated with distal vaginal atresia in 5 patients. A truncating mutation c.266delC (p.P89Rfs*5) in the T-box transcription factor 6 (TBX6) gene, which is highly expressed in the human vagina, was identified in 1 patient using whole-exome sequencing. The deletion of the 16p11.2 region containing the TBX6 locus has also been reported previously to have the clinical feature of Müllerian agenesis. This mutation was paternally inherited by the patient. This truncating mutation was absent from all of the databases we checked, suggesting that the variant is rare and pathogenic. In order to promote the environmental conservation and energy efficiency, sufficient attention has been paid to biomass gasification-based combined cooling, heating and power (BGBCCHP) systems. Accurate evaluation of BGBCCHP systems is helpful to improving its performance. The maximum generalized entropy principle was introduced to reveal the essential characteristics of BGBCCHP systems. The BGBCCHP system was regarded as an open and evolutionary information network. Annual total cost, annual primary energy consumption, annual carbon dioxide emissions and exergy efficiency were used as evaluation criteria. Reasonable weights were conferred to the criteria so as to make the system stable. Moreover, an evaluation model based on the maximum generalized entropy principle was established to determine the eigenvalues of the BGBCCHP system. Self-organizing feature map network was used to simulate the evaluation model of the BGBCCHP system. A case study based on an office building in Beijing, China, was carried out. Three operating strategies (following the thermal load, following the electric load and following the hybrid electric-thermal load) were considered in the evaluation of the BGBCCHP system. Sensitivity analysis was carried out to investigate the impact of economic and technical parameters on the evaluation results. Results indicated that the evaluation model based on the maximum generalized entropy principle could be used to evaluate the BGBCCHP system operated under different operating strategies. The BGBCCHP system operated following the electric load achieved the maximum eigenvalue, which showed that its best integrated performance. On the contrary, the BGBCCHP system operated following the thermal load achieved the minimum eigenvalue, which showed that its worst integrated performance. The impact of sensitivity factors on the eigenvalues of the BGBCCHP system was different, which showed that the integrated performance of the BGBCCHP system was closely related to such factors. Aims: To discover possible relationships between CXCL12 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its risk factors. Methods: The present sib-pair study was conducted in a rural community of Beijing, China. SNPs rs2297630, rs1746048, and rs1801157 located within or nearby the CXCL12 gene were genotyped using the allele-specific polymerase chain reaction method. Haseman-Elston regression was used to investigate linkages between these SNPs and T2DM. A generalized estimating equation logistic regression model was used to discover associations between the SNPs, T2DM, and its risk factors. Results: A total of 3171 participants were recruited, comprising 2277 sib pairs. After Bonferroni correction (α = 0.016), rs2297630 was found to be significantly linked to (p = 0.003) and associated with T2DM (AA vs. GG/GA: OR = 2.26, 95% CI: 1.31–3.88, p = 0.003). There were interactions between rs2297630 and dyslipidemia (p < 0.001) and between rs1746048 and hypertension (p = 0.011). Compared to dyslipidemia-free subjects with rs2297630 GG/GA genotypes, dyslipidemia patients with rs2297630 AA had a higher risk of T2DM (OR = 4.15, 95% CI: 2.24–7.67, p < 0.001). Compared to hypertension-free subjects with rs1746048 CC genotypes, hypertension-free subjects with rs1746048 CT/TT had a decreased risk of T2DM (OR = 0.77, 95% CI: 0.60–0.99, p = 0.045). Conclusions: A novel linkage and association was found between rs2297630 and T2DM. Moreover, novel interactions were found between rs2297630 and dyslipidemia as well as rs1746048 and hypertension. The planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) is critical in affecting the concentration of air pollutants at surface. The relationship between PBLH and surface ozone concentration can be complicated but not entirely clear. In this study, by using observations and WRF-Chem simulations, we explore the relationship between the surface ozone and the PBLH in the summer daytime in Beijing, a major global ozone pollution hotspot. It is found that the surface ozone-PBLH relationship exhibits a three-stage evolution with ozone: first, increasing with PBLH, then keeping steady, and finally falling. The two turning points are around 1000 and 2000 m respectively. This process is likely controlled by the different contributions of chemical production and vertical mixing. Specifically, when PBLH is below ∼1000 m, as PBLH increases, chemical production increases owing to the light enhancement whereas the ozone contribution from vertical mixing remains weak due to the decreased ozone concentration gradient between the surface and the upper layer, resulting in a net gain of surface ozone concentration. When the PBL continues to rise, chemical production contributes less mainly due to the decrease of ozone precursors at the surface, whereas vertical mixing becomes more vigorous that further diluting surface ozone, resulting in a net loss of surface ozone concentration, especially when PBLH reaches above ∼2000 m. Our results contribute to understanding the variability of surface ozone in Beijing area and provide insights for local ozone air quality control. As the capital of China, Beijing is the subject of great concern regarding atmospheric pollution, especially that of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5). In winter 2017 (i.e., November 2017 to February 2018), PM 2.5 concentration in Beijing decreased to its lowest value in the past ten years. In this study, we sought to investigate the impacts of meteorology and emission control on this abnormally low pollution phenomenon. Weather Research and Forecasting coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) simulations show that sensitivity to meteorological factors accounts for approximately 51% of the observed change between winters 2016 and 2017 in Beijing. We further compared the pollution dispersion condition of winters 2016 and 2017 in terms of large-scale circulation patterns and local mixing layer heights (MLHs). The meteorological condition in 2017 was characterized by stronger wind speed (WS) and higher MLH. We classified circulation patterns into two types using the obliquely rotated Principal Component Analysis in T-mode (T-PCA) method. Active weather was found to be associated with high MLH, high near-surface WS, and high ventilation coefficient (VC), which favors the dispersion of pollutants. In contrast, the changes of meteorological variables and pollution conditions are almost opposite for stable weather. Active weather amounted to 73 and 85 days for winters 2016 and 2017, respectively. Stable weather conditions prevailed on 46 days in winter 2016, and 32 days in 2017. Less stable weather during winter 2017 compared with that of winter 2016 possibly favored efficient ventilation of boundary-layer pollution. A lack of persistent stable weather also contributed to low PM 2.5 concentration in 2017. The heat demand of existing buildings can be reduced by improving the thermal properties of building envelope. Moreover, the heat medium temperature of district heating (DH) systems may also be influenced by adding insulation materials. An optimization model used to determine the optimum economic insulation thickness of walls (OEITW) of existing buildings with combined heat and power (CHP)-based DH systems was established based on energy grade and amount of energy. An existing residential building in Beijing, China, was used as the basis of the case study. The impact of insulation thickness (IT) on energy grade and amount of energy was studied. Sensitivity analysis method was used to investigate the impact of electricity price, interest rate, insulation material price and absorption heat pump price on the OEITW and minimum annual total cost (MATC). Results show that the OEITW and MATC can be obtained by using the optimization model. The heat demand and heat medium temperature can be lowered through adding insulation materials, resulting in the reduction of energy grade and amount of energy. Degassing of carbon monoxide (CO), which plays a significant role in the contribution of deep carbon to the atmosphere, commonly occurs within active fault zones. CO degassing from soil to the atmosphere in the Basin and Range province, west of Beijing (BRPB), China, was investigated by in-situ field measurements in the active fault zones. The measured concentrations of CO in soil gas in the BRPB ranged from 0.29 × 10 −6 to 1.1 × 10 −6 with a mean value of 0.6 × 10 −6 , which is approximately twice as large as that in the atmosphere. Net fluxes of CO degassing ranged from −48.6 mg m −2 d −1 to 12.03 mg m −2 d −1 . The diffusion of CO from soil to the atmosphere in the BRPB was estimated to be at least 7.6 × 10 3 ton/a, which is comparable to the corresponding result of about 1.2 × 10 4 ton/a for CO 2 . CO concentrations were spatially heterogeneous with clearly higher concentrations along the NE-SW trending in the BRPB. These elevated values of CO concentrations were also coincident with the region with low-velocity and high conductivity in deep mantle, and high Poisson’s ratio in the crust, thereby suggesting that CO degassing from the soil might be linked to upwelling of the asthenospheric mantle. Other sources of CO in the soil gas are suggested to be dominated by chemical reactions between deep fluids and carbonate minerals (e.g., dolomite, limestone, and siderite) in country rocks. Biogenic processes may also contribute to the CO in soil gas. The spatial distribution patterns of CO concentrations are coincident with the stress field, suggesting that the concentrations of CO could be a potential indicator for crustal stress field and, hence is potential useful for earthquake monitoring in the BRPB. The chemical characteristics of airborne particulate matter (PM) have been extensively studied; however, little information exists for its biological components (bioaerosol) especially during a haze event in mega cities. Herein, we studied the bioaerosol (fluorescent particle) dynamics on both haze and sunny days in Beijing from Dec. 2013 to March 2014 by employing a widely used real-time bioaerosol sensor-ultraviolet aerodynamic particle spectrometer (UV-APS). Firstly, we studied the fluorescent particle (BioPM) concentration and size distributions during three independent haze and three independent sunny days. Secondly, we investigated BioPM dynamics over a two-week long monitoring period which included consecutive haze days and alternated sunny days. In addition, we analyzed bacterial community structures and endotoxin levels in the air samples using pyrosequencing and Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) method, respectively. More than 6-fold higher fluorescent particle concentrations up to 5 × 10 5 /m 3 with peaks at night or early dawn were detected at the time of haze occurrences than those observed on sunny days. When the haze episode progressed for 3–5 days, the BioPM concentrations were observed to decrease to the levels that were typically observed on sunny days. In general, ozone levels were found to be elevated at noon, while BioPM, NO x and relative humidity were reduced. Gene sequence analysis revealed no significant difference in abundances and community structures for top 13 bacterial genera between haze and sunny days, yet about twice higher endotoxin levels (12.4 EU/m 3 ) were detected on haze days than on sunny days. To better understand the chemical speciation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and their role in ground-level ozone formation in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, China, measurements of 56 non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) and 12 carbonyls were conducted at three sites in summer. Alkanes were the largest group of NMHCs (>50%), followed by alkenes and aromatics. Acetone was the most abundant carbonyl species (>50%). The OH loss rates (L OH ) of VOCs were calculated to estimate their chemical reactivities. Alkenes played a predominant role in VOC reactivity, among which ethene and propene were the largest contributors. Isoprene contributed 11.61–38.00% of the total reactivity of measured VOCs. Alkenes and aromatics were the largest contributors (47.65–61.53% totally) to the total Ozone Formation Potential (OFP) of measured VOCs based on the observed mixing ratio. Isoprene was the most reactive species, but originated mainly from biogenic emissions. Ethene, m/p-xylene, toluene, propene, o-xylene, and 1-butene were considered to play significant roles in ground-level ozone formation in this region. The OFPs of total measured NMHCs increased by 10.20–22.05% when they were calculated based on the initial mixing ratio. Photochemical losses of hydrocarbons and the secondary formation of carbonyls in this region were also determined. Vehicle exhaust emissions contributed substantially to ambient VOCs. In order to ensure an ongoing and long-term breeding progress of soybean, stable sources of major quality traits across multi-environments need to be identified. Here, a panel of 135 soybean genotypes was tested in three different Chinese environments, including Beijing, Anhui, and Hainan during the 2017 and 2018 growing seasons to identify stable genotypes for cultivation under varying environmental conditions. The weighted average of absolute scores biplot (WAASB) for the best linear unbiased predictions of the genotype-environment interaction and multi-trait stability index (MTSI) were utilized to determine the stability of the soybeans for seven seed composition traits viz; protein content, oil content, and five fatty acids (palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids). Based on the WAASB index, the following genotypes were identified as stable genotypes for some specific traits; ZDD12828 and ZDD12832 for protein content, WDD01583 and WDD03025 for oil content, ZDD23040 for palmitic acid, WDD00033 for stearic acid, ZDD23822 for oleic acid, ZDD11183 for linoleic acid, and ZDD08489 for linolenic acid. Furthermore, based on MTSI at a selection intensity of 10%, 14 soybean genotypes were selected for their average performance and stability. Overall, the MTSI was shown to be a powerful and simple tool for identifying superior genotypes in terms of both performance and stability, hence, identifying stable soybean genotypes for future breeding programs of quality traits. The concentrations of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (∑ 16PAHs) were measured by gas chromatography equipped with a mass spectrometry detector (GC-MS) in 56 topsoil samples around Guanting Reservior (GTR), which is an important water source for Beijing. Low to medium levels of PAH contamination (mean=394.2±580.7 ng g-1 dry weight (d.w.)) was evident throughout the region. In addition, localised areas of high PAH contamination near steel and cement factories were identified, with ∑ 16PAHs concentrations as high as 4110 ng/g, dry weight (d.w.). There was a significant positive correlation (r2=0.570, p<0.01) between total organic carbon content and ∑ 16PAHs concentrations. Phenanthrene was the predominant compound, accounting for 27.2% of the ∑ PAH concentration, followed by chrysene>pyrene>benzo[a]anthracene≈ benzo[b]fluoranthene≈ benzo[a]pyrene. Four-ring PAH homologues (39%) were dominant. The higher proportion of 4-6 ring homologues, molecular indices, and the spatial distribution of PAH indicated that industrial discharges, incineration of wastes and traffic discharges were the major sources of soil PAHs around the water reservoir. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to ongoing reductions in economic activity and anthropogenic emissions. Beijing was particular badly affected by lockdown measures during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. It has significantly reduced the CO2 emission and toxic air pollution (CO and NO2). We use column-averaged dry-air mole fractions of CO2 and CO (XCO2 and XCO) observed by a ground-based EM27/SUN Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS), the tropospheric NO2 column observed by MAX-DOAS and satellite remote sensing data (GOSAT and TROPOMI) to investigate the variations in anthropogenic CO2 emission related to COVID-19 lockdown in Beijing. The anomalies describe the spatio-temporal enhancement of gas concentration, which relates to the emission. Anomalies in XCO2 and XCO, and XNO2 (ΔXCO2, ΔXCO, and ΔXNO2) for ground-based measurements were calculated from the diurnal variability. Highly correlated daily XCO and XCO2 anomalies derived from FTS time series data provide the ΔXCO to ΔXCO2 ratio (the correlation slope). The ΔXCO to ΔXCO2 ratio in Beijing was lower in 2020 (8.2 ppb/ppm) than in 2019 (9.6 ppb/ppm). The ΔXCO to ΔXCO2 ratio originating from a polluted area was significantly lower in 2020. The reduction in anthropogenic CO2 emission was estimated to be 14.2% using FTS data. A comparable value reflecting the slowdown in growth of atmospheric CO2 over the same time period was estimated to be 15% in Beijing from the XCO2 anomaly from GOSAT, which was derived from the difference between the target area and the background area. The XCO anomaly from TROPOMI is reduced by 8.7% in 2020 compared with 2019, which is much smaller than the reduction in surface air pollution data (17%). Ground-based NO2 observation provides a 21.6% decline in NO2. The NO2 to CO2 correlation indicates a 38.2% decline in the CO2 traffic emission sector. Overall, the reduction in anthropogenic CO2 emission relating to COVID-19 lockdown in Beijing can be detected by the Bruker EM27/SUN Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) and MAX-DOAS in urban Beijing. The number of Individuals that use dietary supplements and herbal medicine products are continuous to increase in many countries. The context of usage of a dietary supplement varies widely from country-to-country; in some countries supplement use is just limited to general health and well-being while others permit use for medicinal purposes. To date, there is little consensus from country to country on the scope, requirements, definition, or even the terminology in which dietary supplement and herbal medicines categories could be classified. Transparent science-based quality standards for the ingredients across these regulatory frameworks/definitions becomes even more important given the international supply chain. Meanwhile, there has been a rapid advancement in emerging technologies and data science applied to the field. This review was conceived at the Global Summit on Regulatory Sciences that took place in Beijing on September 2018 (GSRS2018) which is organized by Global Coalition for Regulatory Science Research (GCRSR) that consists of the global regulatory agencies from over ten countries including the European Union. This review summarizes a significant portion of discussions relating to a longitudinal comparison of the status for dietary supplements and herbal medicines among the different national jurisdictions and to the extent of how new tools and methodologies can improve the regulatory application. • A multi-criteria approach integrating demand for ecological and cultural services. • We quantified the consumption of green spaces using check-in data. • We applied the demand for ES to optimize the ecological security pattern in central Beijing. A growing number of studies have mapped the demand for ecosystem services (ES). Recently, demand for ES has been broadened to include cultural services in addition to ecological services, especially for urbanized areas. In this study, a multi-criteria approach is proposed that synthesizes the available ecological and cultural services to map the demand for ES: including 1) soil erosion sensitivity, 2) geological hazard sensitivity, 3) water management, 4) vegetation coverage, 5) permanent farmland, 6) accessibility, 7) population density, 8) direct use of green spaces, and 9) cultural heritage. The cultural services demand describes the desire or preference, and consumption or direct use of cultural services, e.g. recreation and cultural heritage. Most studies discussed only the desire or preference for cultural services because of the difficulty quantifying the actual consumption of these cultural services. This research gap was filled using the check-in data collected from WeChat (a major social network in China). Each criterion was assigned a weight so that the ecological services demand, the cultural services demand, and the overall ES demand could be quantified. The results suggest that in general, the mountainous areas, farmlands, and suburban areas have high demand for ecological services while public parks in urban areas show high demand for cultural services. However, the ES demand in the availability of some small green spaces in highly urbanized areas may be higher than that for large green spaces in suburban areas. This multi-criteria analysis is necessary to obtain a comprehensive assessment of ES demand, which will contribute to improving the applicability of ES in real-world decision making, e.g. green space planning and conservation.
