Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is an infectious disease that usually occurs in children under 5 years and is caused by a group of enteroviruses. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological characteristics of HFMD clusters from 2016 to 2020 in Tongzhou, Beijing, and explored the genetic evolution of CV‐A6. The HFMD case information came from the Information System of China Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as well as the clusters information verification and on‐site investigation by Tongzhou CDC. ARIMA model was applied to forecast HFMD clusters in 2020. Totally 440 HFMD clusters were reported during 2016–2020. The large peak of the clusters occurred in April–July, followed by a smaller peak in October–November during 2016–2019. However, in 2020, the two peaks disappeared. The main site of HFMD clusters was childcare facilities (65.0%) and mostly occurred in urban areas (46.1%). The detection rate of CV‐A6 was the highest (36.1%), and cases with CV‐A6 infection had the highest proportion of fever. The phylogenetic analysis based on CV‐A6 VP1 gene showed that the predominant strains mainly located in Group F during 2016–2017, while changed into Group A during 2018–2020. HFMD clusters presented seasonality, mainly located in childcare facilities and urban areas, and CV‐A6 was the major causative agent. Background: Genetic testing for breast cancer (BC) patients may shift the paradigm towards more personalized management and treatment strategies. While gene alterations may be ethnic-specific in breast cancer, our understanding of genetic epidemiology of BC remains mainly driven by data from Caucasian populations and further limited to selected handful of genes. Methods: We collected whole blood samples from 356 BC patients at metastatic first line BC and primary stage IV disease at Beijing Cancer Hospital between Jan. 2013 to Dec. 2019. A comprehensive 600-gene cancer panel was used to detect germline variants in the covered genes with a median 300x sequencing depth. Variants were classified into pathogenic, likely pathogenic, variant of uncertain significance, likely benign and benign groups according to the ACMG/AMP Standards and Guidelines. Pathogenic and likely pathogenic variants were considered as deleterious mutations. Results: The median age of 356 BC patients was 49 years (range, 21-87 years) at the first diagnosis of BC. Deleterious germline mutations across 48 cancer-related genes were identified in 21.6% (77/356) of the patients. The most prevalent mutations were BRCA1/2 mutations (7.0%), followed by ATM and RAD50 mutations (1.4% each). In addition, patients with family history were more likely to carry BRCA1 mutations (P=0.04). Moreover, patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) were more likely to harbor BRCA1 mutations than those with HR+ or HER2+ breast cancer (P=0.006). While there was no significant survival difference observed in BRCA1/2 carriers relative to non-carriers, patients with DNA damage repair (DDR) gene mutations (mostly frequently BRCA, ATM, RAD50) had worse disease-free survival (P=0.02). Conclusions: The most prevalent germline mutations in a large cohort of Chinese patients with advanced BC were BRCA1/2 mutations, followed by ATM and RAD50 mutations. In total, approximately 16.0% (57/356) of patients carry deleterious mutations in DDR pathway. Patients with breast or ovarian cancer family history were more likely to carry BRCA1/2 mutations, and ones with DDR mutations had worse survival. These findings suggest that DDR mutations are prevalent in Chinese BC patients who may potentially benefit from treatment with Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stroke is a major cause of death and disability in China, and no therapies have proven effective to prevent it. Popular belief holds that the lunar cycle affects human physiology, behavior, and health. The aim of our study is to determine whether the lunar cycle impacts the incidence of stroke subtypes [intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), transient ischemic attack (TIA) and ischemic stroke (IS)]. We retrospectively extracted the discharge registry data of all patients with first-ever acute stroke hospitalized in the affiliated hospital of Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine during 2002–2015. The onset times of stroke were assigned to four primary lunar phases based on NASA definitions. Chi-square tests and multiple logistic regression analyses were used to estimate the association between the lunar cycle and stroke incidence with adjustment for age, sex and season. A total of 5,965 patients with stroke (4,909 admissions for ischemic stroke IS, 754 admissions for ICH, and 302 admissions for TIA) were evaluated in our study. Subgroup analysis indicated that the admission rates of different sexes for IS tended to have opposite variation during the four moon phases. More female patients were admitted during the new moon than in the first and third quarters, while fewer male patients were admitted during the new moon than in the first and third quarters (χ2 = 15.589, P =.001). Multiple logistic regression analyses revealed that men were more likely to be admitted for IS in the first quarter than during the new moon (odds ratio [OR] = 1.252, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.076–1.456) (P =.004), and a corresponding trend was also identified for the third quarter (OR = 1.235, 95% CI = 1.062–1.437) (P =.006). No significant gender differences were shown in ICH or TIA. No sex difference is obvious during the full moon. Moon phases seem to affect both genders, but in very different ways. It seems that the new moon is a protective factor for male ischemic stroke patients and a risk factor for female ones. Woman tends to be more vulnerable than ever at the new moon, so deserves more attention and care. The mechanisms underlying this observation are worth studying further. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Over the past decades there have been outbreaks of mumps in many countries, even in populations that were vaccinated. Some studies suggest that the incidence of mumps is related to meteorological changes, but the results of these studies vary in different regions. To date there is no reported study on correlations between mumps incidence and meteorological parameters in Beijing, China.Methods: A time series analysis incorporating selected weather factors and the number of mumps cases from 1990 to 2012 in Beijing was performed. First, correlations between meteorological variables and the number of mumps cases were assessed. A seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average model with explanatory variables (SARIMAX) was then constructed to predict mumps cases.Results: Mean temperature, rainfall, relative humidity, vapor pressure, and wind speed were significantly associated with mumps incidence. After constructing the SARIMAX model, mean temperature at lag 0 (β = 0.016, p < 0.05, 95% confidence interval 0.001 to 0.032) was positively associated with mumps incidence, while vapor pressure at lag 2 (β = -0.018, p < 0.05, 95% confidence interval -0.038 to -0.002) was negatively associated. SARIMAX (1, 1, 1) (0, 1, 1)12 with temperature at lag 0 was the best predictive construct.Conclusions: The incidence of mumps in Beijing from 1990 to 2012 was significantly correlated with meteorological variables. Combining meteorological variables, a predictive SARIMAX model that could be used to preemptively estimate the incidence of mumps in Beijing was established. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
