The fast growth of China's economy and society has brought severe consequences on the country's environmental quality and natural resources. In order to overcome these obstacles, the Chinese government proposed the concept of high-quality development in 2017, aiming to promote the comprehensive, sustainable and balanced development of society, economy, resources and the environment. Exploring the interactions within the Social-Economic-Resource-Environment (SERE) system in urban agglomeration regions can help policy-makers achieve high-quality sustainable urban development. On account of the concept of high-quality development and the theory of complex systems, we constructed the SERE system. Taking the Jingjinji (JJJ) urban agglomeration from 2011 to 2019 as a research sample, we first evaluated the comprehensive quality of the SERE subsystems at two scale levels using the entropy method. Then, the level of coordinated development among the subsystems was studied by building a coupling coordination degree (CCD)model. Finally, the effect of the four subsystems on the CCD was analyzed by using a panel regression model. The results of the study found that first, the SERE system's comprehensive development quality at the scale of the whole JJJ urban agglomeration showed an upward trend from 2011 to 2019. The resource subsystem always contributed the most, the economic and social subsystem contributed moderately, and the environmental subsystem contributed the least. Secondly, the comprehensive quality of all cities' SERE subsystems showed different degrees of growth, with notable spatial differences. The comprehensive quality levels of social, economic and resource subsystems in Beijing and Tianjin were significantly higher than those in Hebei. Thirdly, the SERE system's CCD in each city showed various growth tendencies. The proportion of severely unbalanced cities decreased from 84.62% to 61.54% during the study period, and regional development became more coordinated. However, there were still obvious spatial differences; Beijing and Tianjin consistently performed better, and the scores of cities in Hebei province were generally low. Fourthly, the degree of coupling coordination among the subsystems was positively correlated with their comprehensive quality. The elasticity of the environmental subsystem was the largest, which was essential to the coordinated development of the SERE system. It is important to select the appropriate plants for soil bioengineering by taking their development and the root anchorage into consideration. The aims of the study were to evaluate the survival rate and anchorage capability of five species planted as cuttings and to further investigate the interrelationship of pull out force and plant morphology. Above 90% of Salix matsudana cv. Umbraculifera , Populus canadensis Moench , Salix alba var.Tristis and Salix purpurea cuttings survived. Less than 30% of Amorpha fruticosa L. survived. The highest number of roots had developed in the 30–40 cm stem section in the deepest layer of soil. A total of 77 cuttings were vertically pulled out and the morphological characteristics of their root structure were measured. Cuttings of S. matsudana cv. Umbraculifera showed the greatest uprooting resistance (1214.8 N), followed by A. fruticosa L. (1043.9 N), P. canadensis Moench (879.7 N), S. purpurea (802.9 N) and S. alba var. Tristis (765.2 N). Uprooting resistance was effected mostly by the roots than by the shoot profiles. The pull out resistance force ( F max ) has shown the best relationships with multiple morphological parameters as total number of roots combined with root dry mass ( P < 0.0001). The species with the highest capability suitable for purposes of soil bioengineering should be S. matsudana cv. Umbraculifera , P. canadensis Moench , S. purpurea and S. alba var. Tristis . A. fruticosa L. is not suitable for being used in soil bioengineering techniques due to its low level of survival rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Develop a set of holistic planning frameworks for forest landscape restoration. • Offer a set of alternative and flexible restoration plans. • Reveal different interactions between conservation and development plans. • Visually determine the desired restoration plans based on actual situations. Forest landscape restoration (FLR) is an efficient approach to address the challenge of megacities' forest landscape degradation. However, a holistic FLR planning framework economically reconciling human development needs with the integrity of our environment is still lacking. Using the ordered weighted averaging operator, one of the multicriteria evaluation methods, integrated with geographic information system and participatory techniques, this study aims to explore the FLR planning and prioritizing issues for the Miyun Reservoir Catchment, the local strategic surface water source area of Beijing City. A set of planning frameworks was established to flexibly and visually plan the priority areas (subwatersheds) using aggregation operators for weighted biophysical and socioeconomic criteria. As such, a complete spectrum of alternative FLR plans represents the different tradeoffs among criteria and further indicates the complicated interactions between conservation and development objectives. The optimal FLR plans fully considering the local environmental challenges led by severe water crisis should focus more on conservation rather than development with the available resources. The resulting spatial distribution of priority subwatersheds suggests that future FLR activities should be extended more to upstream Hebei Province. Both the conservation plans and sensitivity analysis indicate that the biophysical criteria regarding catchment conservation, particularly the water purification service, should be further emphasized in future FLR planning. Finally, to better balance the objectives of conservation and development, local well-functioning markets of Payment for Ecosystem Services should be fostered step-by-step based on the view of natural capital to achieve the desired "win-win" outcomes.
