A dose‒response experiment with six supplemental levels of coated sodium butyrate (CSB) (0, 250, 500, 750, 1,000, and 1,250 mg/kg) was conducted to investigate its effects on growth performance, intestinal morphology, and caecal short-chain fatty acids of growing Pekin ducks aged 14 to 35 d. A total of 288 male 14-d-old Pekin ducks were randomly allocated to six dietary treatments. Each treatment had eight replicate pens of six ducks per pen. 2. The daily weight gain, daily feed intake, and feed/gain of ducks from 14 to 35 d of age were not influenced by increasing CSB levels. The relative weight and length of the duodenum, jejunum, and caecum increased linearly or quadratically as supplemental CSB increased (P < 0.05). 3. For the ileum and caecum, the villus height and height/crypt depth increased linearly or quadratically, and the villus crypt depth decreased linearly as the supplemental CSB increased (P < 0.05). As supplemental CSB increased, the goblet cell numbers of the ileum increased and decreased and changed quadratically (P < 0.05), but caecal goblet cell number increased quadratically (P < 0.05). Increasing the CSB level linearly or quadratically elevated the concentrations of propionic acid and butyric acid in the caecum (P < 0.05). 4. It was concluded that CSB can be used as a safe and effective feed additive to promote the intestinal integrity of growing ducks by improving intestinal morphology and increasing the concentration of caecal short-chain fatty acids. The megacity of Beijing has experienced frequent severe fine particle pollution during the last decade. Although the sources and formation mechanisms of aerosol particles have been extensively investigated on the basis of ground measurements, real-time characterization of aerosol particle composition and sources above the urban canopy in Beijing is rare. In this study, we conducted real-time measurements of non-refractory submicron aerosol (NR-PM1) composition at 260m at the Beijing 325m meteorological tower (BMT) from 10 October to 12 November 2014, by using an aerosol chemical speciation monitor (ACSM) along with synchronous measurements of size-resolved NR-PM1 composition near ground level using a high-resolution timeof- flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS). The NR-PM1 composition above the urban canopy was dominated by organics (46%), followed by nitrate (27%) and sulfate (13%). The high contribution of nitrate and high NO3- = SO4²- mass ratios illustrates an important role of nitrate in particulate matter (PM) pollution during the study period. The organic aerosol (OA) was mainly composed of secondary OA (SOA), accounting for 61% on an average. Different from that measured at the ground site, primary OA (POA) correlated moderately with SOA, likely suggesting a high contribution from regional transport above the urban canopy. The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit with strict emission controls provides a unique opportunity to study the impacts of emission controls on aerosol chemistry. All aerosol species were shown to have significant decreases of 40-80% during APEC from those measured before APEC, suggesting that emission controls over regional scales substantially reduced PM levels. However, the bulk aerosol composition was relatively similar before and during APEC as a result of synergetic controls of aerosol precursors. In addition to emission controls, the routine circulations of mountain-valley breezes were also found to play an important role in alleviating PM levels and achieving the "APEC blue" effect. The evolution of vertical differences between 260m and the ground level was also investigated. Our results show complex vertical differences during the formation and evolution of severe haze episodes that are closely related to aerosol sources and boundary-layer dynamics. Extreme haze episodes repeatedly shrouded Beijing during the winter of 2012-2013, causing major environmental and health problems. To better understand these extreme events, we performed a model-assisted analysis of the hourly observation data of PM2.5 and its major chemical compositions. The synthetic analysis shows that (1) the severe winter haze was driven by stable synoptic meteorological conditions over northeastern China, and not by an abrupt increase in anthropogenic emissions. (2) Secondary species, including organics, sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium, were the major constituents of PM2.5 during this period. (3) Due to the dimming effect of high loading of aerosol particles, gaseous oxidant concentrations decreased significantly, suggesting a reduced production of secondary aerosols through gas-phase reactions. Surprisingly, the observational data reveals an enhanced production rate of secondary aerosols, suggesting an important contribution from other formation pathways, most likely heterogeneous reactions. These reactions appeared to be more efficient in producing secondary inorganics aerosols than organic aerosols resulting in a strongly elevated fraction of inorganics during heavily polluted periods. (4) Moreover, we found that high aerosol concentration was a regional phenomenon. The accumulation process of aerosol particles occurred successively from cities southeast of Beijing. The apparent sharp increase in PM2.5 concentration of up to several hundred pgm-3 per hour recorded in Beijing represented rapid recovery from an interruption to the continuous pollution accumulation over the region, rather than purely local chemical production. Non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) play a critical role in the photochemical production of ozone (O3) and organic aerosols. Obtaining an accurate understanding on temporal trends of NMHC emissions is essential for predicting air quality changes and evaluating the effectiveness of current control measures. In this study, we evaluated temporal trends of anthropogenic NMHC emissions during August in Beijing based on ambient measurements during selected summer periods at an urban site in Beijing from 2002 to 2013. In the contrast to the results from the most recent inventory (Multi-resolution Emission Inventory for China, MEIC), which reported that anthropogenic NMHC emissions during August increased by 28% from 2004 to 2012, whereas mixing ratios of NMHCs measured at this urban site decreased by 37% during the same time period. A positive matrix factorization (PMF) model was applied to these NMHC measurements for source apportionment. The results showed that the relative contributions of vehicular exhaust and gasoline evaporation to measured NMHC concentrations decreased by 66% during August from 2004 to 2012, comparable to the relative decline of 67 % for transportation related NMHC emissions reported by the MEIC inventory. This finding indicates that the implementation of stricter emissions standards for new vehicles and specific control measures for in-use vehicles has been effective for reducing transportation-related NMHC emissions. In addition, the PMF results suggested that there were no significant temporal changes in NMHC concentrations from solvent use and industry during August from 2004 to 2012, in contrast with the rapid rate of increase (8.8 %yr-1) reported by the MEIC inventory. To re-evaluate the NMHC emissions trends for solvent use and industry, annual variations in NMHC / NOx ratios were compared between ambient measurements at the PKU site and the MEIC inventory. In contrast to the significant rise in NMHC / NOx ratios from the MEIC inventory, the measured NMHC / NOx ratios declined by 14 % during August from 2005 to 2012. The inferred NMHC / NOx ratios based on PMF results exhibited a comparable decline of 11 % to measured ratios. These results indicate that the increase rate for NMHC emissions from solvent use and industry in Beijing might be overestimated in the current inventory; therefore, additional research is necessary to verify the NMHC emission trends for this source. Elevated ground-level ozone (O3), reflecting atmospheric oxidative capacity, are of increasing concern. High levels of total oxidants (Ox =O3+NO2) have been persistently observed as a feature of Beijing's air pollution. Beijing is a well-known megacity requiring the enforcement of stringent air quality controls as rapid economic growth continues. To evaluate the effect of air quality controls in recent years, ground-based on-line measurements at an urban site were conducted in summer and the variations in O3 with simultaneous changes in NOx and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) between 2005 and 2011 were analyzed. Both NOx and total VOCs in Beijing decreased over the study period, 1.4 ppbv yr-1 and 1.6 ppbv yr-1, respectively. However, VOCs reactivity, in terms of OH loss rate, showed an indistinct statistical trend due to unsteady variations from naturally emitted isoprene, though some anthropogenic species showed decreasing trends, such as pentane, benzene and toluene. Meanwhile, daytime average O3 increased rapidly at an annual rate of 2.6 ppbv yr-1, around 5%yr-1 between 2005 and 2011. Considering the influence of NO titration effect and elevated regional ozone background in the North China Plain (NCP), the main reason for such an increase in Oxidants was subject to "local" photochemistry. A simplified model was used to evaluate the effect of changes in the levels of ozone precursors on ozone production. We found that between 2001 and 2006, the production rate of total oxidants, P(Ox) increased rapidly due to increased VOC levels and decreasing NO2, while from 2006 to 2011 P(Ox) remained high, though decreased slightly as a consequence of the decrease in both VOC reactivity (-5%yr-1) and NOx (-4%yr-1). Observations have shown that Beijing's efforts to control air pollution were somehow effective in cutting ozone precursors, but still left higher ground-level ozone. We surmised that it resulted from potential contributions from OVOCs and regional transport near Beijing. Therefore, Beijing needs deeper cooperation with adjacent provinces to control ozone pollution together. To impel this kind of joint prevention and control program, ground-level ozone should become a mandatory index for air quality management, and a faster reduction of VOCs, especially reactive VOCs, in urban areas, should coordinate with national NOx emission control programs. Understanding the sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is essential for ground-level ozone and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) abatement measures. We made VOC measurements at 27 sites and online observations at an urban site in Beijing from July 2009 to January 2012. Based on these measurement data, we determined the spatial and temporal distribution of VOCs, estimated their annual emission strengths based on their emission ratios relative to carbon monoxide (CO), and quantified the relative contributions of various sources using the chemical mass balance (CMB) model. These results from ambient measurements were compared with existing emission inventories to evaluate the spatial distribution, species-specific emissions, and source structure of VOCs in Beijing. The measured VOC distributions revealed a hotspot in the southern suburban area of Beijing, whereas current emission inventories suggested that VOC emissions were concentrated in downtown areas. Compared with results derived from ambient measurements, the annual inventoried emissions of oxygenated VOC (OVOC) species and C2-C4 alkanes may be underestimated, while the emissions of styrene and 1,3-butadiene may be overestimated by current inventories. Source apportionment using the CMB model identified vehicular exhaust as the most important VOC source, with the relative contribution of 49%, in good agreement with the 40-51% estimated by emission inventories. The relative contribution of paint and solvent utilization obtained from the CMB model was 14%, significantly lower than the value of 32% reported by one existing inventory. Meanwhile, the relative contribution of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) usage calculated using the CMB model was 6%, whereas LPG usage contribution was not reported by current emission inventories. These results suggested that VOC emission strengths in southern suburban area of Beijing, annual emissions of C2-C4 alkanes, OVOCs and some alkenes, and the contributions of solvent and paint utilization and LPG usage in current inventories all require significant revisions. This study investigated the air pollution characteristics of synoptic-scale circulation in the Beijing megacity, and provided quantitative evaluation of the impacts of circulation patterns on air quality during the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. Nine weather circulation types (CTs) were objectively identified over the North China region during 2000-2009, using obliquely rotated T-mode principal component analysis (PCA). The resulting CTs were examined in relation to the local meteorology, regional transport pathways, and air quality parameters, respectively. The FLEXPART-WRF model was used to calculate 48-h backward plume trajectories for each CT. Each CT was characterized with distinct local meteorology and air mass origin. CT 1 (high pressure to the west with a strong pressure gradient) was characterized by a northwestern air mass origin, with the smallest local and southeasterly air mass sources, and CT 6 (high pressure to the northwest) had air mass sources mostly from the north and east. On the contrary, CTs 5, 8, and 9 (weak pressure field, high pressure to the east, and low pressure to the northwest, respectively) were characterized by southern and southeastern trajectories, which indicated a greater influence of high pollutant emission sources. In turn, poor air quality in Beijing (high loadings of PM10, BC, SO2, NO2, NOx, O2, AOD, and low visibility) was associated with these CTs. Good air quality in Beijing was associated with CTs 1 and 6. The average visibilities (with ±1σ) in Beijing for CTs 1 and 6 during 2000-2009 were 18.5±8.3 km and 14.3±8.5 km, respectively. In contrast, low visibility values of 6.0±3.5 km, 6.6±3.7 km, and 6.7±3.6 km were found in CTs 5, 8, and 9, respectively. The mean concentrations of PM10 for CTs 1, 6, 5, 8, and 9 during 2005-2009 were 90.3±76.3 µgm-3, 111.7±89.6 µgm-3, 173.4±105.8 µgm-3, 158.4±90.0 µgm-3, and 151.2±93.1 µgm-3, respectively. Analysis of the relationship between circulation pattern and air quality during the emission control period suggests that CTs are the primary drivers of day-to-day variations in pollutant concentrations over Beijing and its vicinity. During the Olympics period, the frequency of CT 6 was twice that of the mean in August from 2000 to 2009. This CT had northerly transport pathways and favorable meteorological conditions (e.g. frequent precipitation) for clean air during the Olympics. Assuming that relationships between CTs and air quality parameters in the same season are fixed in different years, the relative contributions of synoptic circulation to decreases in PM10, BC, SO2, NO2, NOx, CO, and horizontal light extinction during the Olympics were estimated as 19±14%, 18±13%, 41±36%, 12±7%, 10±5%, 19±11%, and 54±25%, respectively. Megacities are places with intensive human activity and energy consumption. To reduce air pollution, many megacities have relocated energy supplies and polluted industries to their outer regions. However, regional transport then becomes an important source of air pollution in megacities. To improve air quality before and during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, a wide range of control strategies were implemented, including the relocation of polluting industries. High sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentrations were occasionally observed during this period. Potential sources from southern regions of Beijing were indicated by backward trajectories model and urban/rural stationary measurements, but direct evidence was lacking. Here we used a mobile laboratory to characterize the spatial distribution and regional transport of SO2 to Beijing during the Campaign for Air Quality Research in Beijing and the Surrounding Region (CAREBEIJING)-2008. Among the five days chosen for the case studies during the Olympic air pollution control period, four had high SO2 concentrations (6, 20 August and 3, 4 September 2008) while one had low SO2 concentration (11 September 2008). The average values of SO2 during the low SO2 concentration day were 3.9 ppb, much lower than during the high concentration days (7.8 ppb). This result implied an impact by regional transport from outside Beijing. During these days, we captured transport events of SO2 from areas south of Beijing, with a clear decrease in SO2 concentrations southeast of the 6th to 4th Ring Roads around Beijing and along the 140 km highway from Tianjin to Beijing. The influx of SO2 through the 4th to 6th Ring Roads ranged from 2.1 to 4.6 kg s-1 on 4 September and 0.2 to 1.6 kg s-1 on 20 August 2008. The differences of influx in days were due to the variations of emission changes, transport directions and dilutions. Locally emitted SO2 from a source located along Jingshi Highway outside the southwest section of the 5th Ring Road of Beijing was identified using wind field data generated by the Weather Research and Forecasting model and the measured particle size distribution, with an estimated flux of 0.1 kg s-1 to Beijing. Little is known about the prevalence of actual vitamin D deficiency in healthy school-aged adolescents, particularly in China. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of hypovitaminosis D and to identify whether there was any association between vitamin D status, body composition and physical exercise in 323 Chinese adolescent girls in Beijing, China (40°N). It is well recognized that persistent severe vitamin D deficiency is associated with the bone abnormalities of rickets and osteomalacia. However, there is now evidence suggesting that low vitamin D status, not previously considered to be a state of deficiency is associated with secondary hyperparathyroidism, increased bone remodelling and other clinical signs thought only to be found in severe vitamin D deficiency. Hypovitaminosis D in healthy children and adolescents has been reported frequently in many countries, especially in winter. We performed a cross-sectional analysis of 323 Chinese adolescent girls in Beijing in winter. Mean age of the subjects was 15.0 (±0.4) years. About 32.8%, 68.4% and 89.2% of the subjects were at risk of vitamin D deficiency when defined as plasma concentrations of 25(OH)D of 25, 37.5 or 50 nmol/L, respectively. This cross-sectional analysis of 323 Chinese adolescent girls in Beijing in winter showed that hypovitaminosis D was common in these subjects. In addition, body mass index, milk intake, participation in organized sports and total physical activity were all significant independent determinants of vitamin D status. An inverse association was found between plasma 25(OH)D and intact-parathyroid hormone (iPTH) concentration. Body mass index (BMI), milk intake, participation in organized sports and total physical activity all emerged as major independent determinants of vitamin D status as assessed by plasma 25(OH)D concentration. Vitamin D status was positively associated with lean body mass (LBM), but there was no association with the degree of body adiposity. Regardless of the concentration of 25(OH)D in blood used to define vitamin D deficiency, hypovitaminosis D was common in these subjects. It is recommended that policies be developed to prevent vitamin D deficiency in adolescent girls. The article presents a study on concentration level of fine airborne lead in Beijing, China. Researchers continuously collected particulate matter samples during 1990-2000, and performed multiple regression analysis of lead with other chemical species, including bromine, elemental carbon and organic carbon, in order to find the relationship between these species. Low-flow rate samplers were applied to collect fine particle samples from July 1, 1999 to June 1, 2000 at two sampling sited in Beijing. The distance between two sites is about 10 kilometer.

Background -- Our two-year school milk intervention trial with Beijing Chinese girls aged 10 years showed that 330 ml milk supplement (fortified with vitamin D and/or calcium) on school days had resulted in greater increases in regional (pelvis, left leg and right leg) bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD). Objectives -- To assess whether these effects were sustained 3 years after the supplement withdrawal. Design -- Regional BMC and BMD were reassessed in 274 of the 375 girls whose regional bone mineral data have been studied at the end of the intervention, with 87 from the group received calcium fortified milk (Ca milk), 82 from the group received calcium and vitamin D fortified milk (CaD milk), and 89 from the control group. The measurements were made at the same dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) machine by the same technicians. Outcomes -- Three years after the cessation of milk supplementation, there were no significant differences between the three groups in the changes of BMC and BMD of pelvis, left leg and right leg from baseline, after adjusted for age and corresponding baseline values. Conclusion -- The benefit of milk supplementation on regional bone mass accretion had disappeared three years after the cessation of milk supplementation. Two years milk supplementation in Chinese pubertal girls is unlikely to have long-lasting effects on their bone mineral accretion. The long-time historical evolution and recent rapid development of Beijing, China, present before us a unique urban structure. A 10-metre spatial resolution SPOT panchromatic image of Beijing has been studied to capture the spatial patterns of the city. Supervised image classifications were performed using statistical and structural texture features produced from the image. Textural features, including eight texture features from the Grey-Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) method; a computationally efficient texture feature, the Number of Different Grey-levels (NDG); and a structural texture feature, Edge Density (ED), were evaluated. It was found that generally single texture features performed poorly. Classification accuracy increased with increasing number of texture features until three or four texture features were combined. The more texture features in the combination, the smaller difference between different combinations. The results also show that a lower number of texture features were needed for more homogeneous areas. NDG and ED combined with GLCM texture features produced similar results as the same number of GLCM texture features. Two classification schemes were adopted, stratified classification and non-stratified classification. Two experiments were designed to investigate the feasibility of enzyme hydrolysate gross energy (EHGE) for formulating duck feeds. In experiment 1, six mixed diets and 6 experimental diets (compound feeds) with 20% CP were formulated, and their EHGE, AME, and TME were determined so as to analyze the correlation between EHGE and AME, TME. In experiment 2, six experimental diets with different EHGE levels were further arranged to determine the EHGE requirement for Pekin ducks from hatch to 21 D of age. A total of 384 freshly hatched ducklings was randomly divided into 6 experimental treatments, each treatment containing 8 replicates with 8 ducks per replicate. The results showed that there were a linear correlation between EHGE and AME (r = 0.998, P < 0.01), TME (r = 0.997, P < 0.01) for 6 mixed diets, and the regression models were AME = 0.996 × EHGE−1.062 (R² = 0.996, P < 0.01), TME = 0.997 × EHGE+0.304 (R² = 0.995, P < 0.01). For the 6 experimental diets, EHGE was also positively correlated with AME (r = 0.983, P < 0.01), TME (r = 0.984, P < 0.01), and the regression models were AME = 1.2054 × EHGE−3.180 (R² = 0.967, P < 0.01), TME = 1.2054 × EHGE−1.783 (R² = 0.967, P < 0.01). According to the broken-line model and optimal BW, the EHGE requirement for ducks from hatch to 21 D of age was 2,937 kcal/kg (calculated value), 3,182 kcal/kg (determined value). In conclusion, EHGE could be used to predict the AME and TME values for mixed diets and compound feeds based on established regression models, and the simulated digestion method in vitro has the potential for effective energy evaluation and formulation for duck feeds. A 2 × 5 factorial experiment, using 2 dietary metabolizable energy (ME) levels (10.82, 12.95 MJ/kg) and 5 supplemental methionine (Met) levels (0, 0.075, 0.15, 0.225, and 0.30%), was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary energy and Met levels on growth performance and carcass traits of Pekin ducks from 15 to 42 D of age. A total of 300 15-day-old male Pekin ducks were randomly allocated to 10 groups with 6 replicates in each group and 5 ducks per replicate. The results showed that ducks those fed the basal diets without Met supplementation had poor growth performance. The ADG was increased (P < 0.001), and the ADFI and feed conversion ratio (FCR) decreased (P < 0.001) when Met were supplemented in diets. The ADFI and FCR were decreased (P < 0.001), while ADG was not affected (P > 0.05) when dietary ME level increased from 10.82 to 12.95 MJ/kg. Dietary Met supplementation increased the yields of eviscerated carcass (P = 0.007) and breast meat (P < 0.001), and decreased abdominal fat (P < 0.001), but increasing dietary energy level resulted in an adverse effect on carcass traits. We observed an interaction effect on FCR between dietary energy and supplemental Met level (P = 0.033). According to the broken-line models, Met requirements of growing Pekin ducks for optimal FCR at 10.82 and 12.95 MJ/kg of ME were 0.406 and 0.502% when expressed as percentage of diet, or 0.376 and 0.388 when expressed as g/MJ ME of diet, respectively. According to the t -test, Met requirements were different (P < 0.05) when expressed as percentage of diet, but had no difference (P > 0.05) when expressed as g/MJ ME of diet in both dietary ME levels. An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of post-hatch brooding temperature on the growth performance of starter Pekin ducks from hatch to 14 D of age and the subsequent growth performance and carcass trait of growing ducks from 15 to 42 D of age. A total of 360 one-day-old male White Pekin ducks were allocated randomly to 6 environment-controlled chambers with ambient temperature set at 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, and 36°C from hatch to 7 D of age, respectively, and then decreased gradually to 26°C at 14 D of age. At 14 D of age, all ducks from all chambers were transferred to a duck barn with ambient temperature maintaining from 26 to 22°C and these birds continued to be raised from 14 to 42 D of age. At 14 D of age, body weight, weight gain, and feed intake decreased linearly or quadratically as initial brooding temperature increased (P < 0.05) and these performance traits were reduced when initial brooding temperature increased to 36°C (P < 0.05). There was no difference in growth performance between ducks fed at brooding temperature regimen starting at 26, 28, 30, and 32°C (P > 0.05). According to broken-line regression, the upper critical temperatures of the initial brooding temperature during the starter period for body weight, weight gain, and feed intake were 31.3, 31.3, and 31.1°C, respectively. On the other hand, the growing ducks brooded initially at 26 or 36°C had lower body weight, weight gain, and feed intake as compared to other birds brooded starting from 28 to 34°C (P < 0.05), but the initial brooding temperature had no effects on carcass traits (P > 0.05). It was concluded that the upper critical temperature of the initial brooding temperature for starter Pekin ducks was 31.3°C and too low initial brooding temperature could lead to growth depression during the subsequent growing period. Abstract: North China is known for its large population densities and rapid development of industry and agriculture. Air quality around Beijing improved substantially during the 2008 Summer Olympics. We measured atmospheric concentrations of various Nr compounds at three urban sites and three rural sites in North China from 2010 to 2012 and estimated N dry and wet deposition by inferential models and the rain gauge method to determine current air conditions with respect to reactive nitrogen (Nr) compounds and nitrogen (N) deposition in Beijing and the surrounding area. NH3, NO2, and HNO3 and particulate NH4 + and NO3 −, and NH4 +–N and NO3 −–N in precipitation averaged 8.2, 11.5, 1.6, 8.2 and 4.6 μg N m−3, and 2.9 and 1.9 mg N L−1, respectively, with large seasonal and spatial variability. Atmospheric Nr (especially oxidized N) concentrations were highest at urban sites. Dry deposition of Nr ranged from 35.2 to 60.0 kg N ha−1 yr−1, with wet deposition of Nr of 16.3 to 43.2 kg N ha−1 yr−1 and total deposition of 54.4–103.2 kg N ha−1 yr−1. The rates of Nr dry and wet deposition were 36.4 and 33.2% higher, respectively, at the urban sites than at the rural sites. These high levels reflect the occurrence of a wide range of Nr pollution in North China and suggest that further strict air pollution control measures are required. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
