Abstract

In this article, the author comments on the analysis of Thomas Diez for the book "The Choice for Europe: Social Purpose and State Power From Messina to Maastricht" The author says Diez described Brussels, Belgium as a vibrant city to evoke an aspect of the European Union (EU) overlooked by functional accounts of European integration. The author claims that there is little cultural depth in the Europeanization of Brussels. The author stresses that Diez's criticisms prove that he is more inclined to speculative abstraction.
