Background: Candida species are members of the normal flora of the skin, mucous membranes, and gastrointestinal tract. They are endogenous opportunists which cause secondary infection in individuals with some underlying immunocompromised conditions. Candidiasis is a common fungal disease found in humans affecting mucosa, skin, nails, and internal organs of the body. Candida albicans is generally considered the major pathogen among the Candida species. An increase in the prevalence of nonalbicans species has been noted during the last decades. Aims and Objectives: The study was done to evaluate the performance of the conventional identification method and commercially available chromogenic Candida speciation media (CHROMagar) for the identification of medically important yeast and yeast-like organisms in a routine clinical microbiology laboratory. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in the Department of Microbiology, Gandhi Medical College, Hamidia, and Associated Hospitals, Bhopal (M.P.), from January 2020 to October 2021. A total of 180 samples were collected from patients suspected of superficial mycoses which were then subjected to direct KOH examination and culture on plain Sabouraud's dextrose agar (SDA), on SDA with antibiotics slants (cycloheximide and chloramphenicol). The growths were examined macroscopically as well as microscopically. Germ tube tests and inoculations on CHROMagar Candida medium were performed on all growths identified as yeasts and confirmed by morphology on CMA. Results: In our study, the majority of patients, belonged to the age group of 21-30 years (25%) with a male-to-female ratio of 2:1. Candida tropicalis (44.68%) was the most common Candida species, followed by C. albicans (38.30%), Candida krusei (12.77%), and Candida glabrata (4.25%). Conclusion: Along with C. albicans, non-albicans Candida spp such as C. tropicalis, C. krusei, and C. glabrata are increasingly being isolated from clinical specimens. Identification of Candida species by colony color on Hicrome correlated with the morphology on CMA. Thus, the incorporation of CMA in routine yeast identification is more judicious than Hicrome as it increases the accuracy in the identification of Candida species within the same time as that of Hicrome. Background: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are infections of the tissues, organs, or spaces exposed by surgeons while performing an invasive procedure. SSI is one of the most common healthcare-associated infections, but its importance as a health-care priority is not fully understood, and limited work has been published defining the role of surgeons in SSIs. Aims and Objectives: In the present study, we assess the burden of SSI after gastrointestinal (GI) surgery in a tertiary care hospital in the Central India. Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted on patients admitted to Gandhi Medical College-affiliated Hamidia Hospital, Bhopal, in the General Surgery Department. The study included 207 patients who underwent emergency/routine GI surgeries between September 2020 and April 2022. Patient characteristics and laboratory data were recorded on a pre-designed form, and all patients were evaluated postoperatively for soakage along with culture and antibiotic testing. Results: The overall incidence of SSI was 42.51% and its distributions between emergency and routine surgeries were 22.7% and 19.8%, respectively. SSI was predominant in male patients. White blood cell level was significantly associated between emergency and routine surgeries, while Hb level, serum protein level, and the time required for surgery were insignificant. SSI under contaminated dirty wounds was prevalent in both emergency and routine surgeries. Klebsiella was the most commonly isolated organism, followed by Escherichia coli. The commonly susceptible antibiotics have been found to be meropenem, pipzo, amikacin, and imipenem. Commonly resistant antibiotics were amoxiclav, ceftriaxone, linezolid, and doxycycline. Conclusion: This paper presents the incidence of SSI in the hospital setting of Central India and the factors that may contribute to the high incidence of SSI. Further research needs to be done to better understand how specific risk factors are responsible for post-operative wound infections in open GI surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Bacterial coinfection contributes to increase morbidity and morbidity of viral respiratory infections and may lead to fatal outcome during its course of illness. Aims and Objectives: The main objective of this study was to determine the bacteriological profile of COVID-19 patients admitted in hospital, their antibiotic susceptibility, and their association with severity. Materials and Methods: The present study was retrospective observational cross-sectional study of all patients admitted for COVID-19 at Gandhi Medical College and Hamidia Hospital, Bhopal (MP) between (March 2020 and December 2020). Demographic, comorbid conditions, and microbiological data were compared HBD and intensive care unit (ICU) admissions and role secondary coinfection in severity and mortality. Results: Thirty percentages of percent of patients showed bacterial growth, Staphylococcus aureus was most common, followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Mean±SD of age was 43.6±21.6. Antibiotic resistance of cefoxitin, cotrimoxazole, and azithromycin was seen in maximum Gram-positive growth, whereas sensitivity for linezolid and gentamicin was present in 10--16% cases. Highest antibiotic resistance in Gram-negative growth was seen for ceftozidime, amikacin, imipenem, and meropenem, whereas sensitivity of colistin antibiotic was highest in Gram-negative growth. Conclusion: Coinfection rates increase in patients admitted to the ICU, despite frequent prescription of broad-spectrum antibiotics. Infectious diseases practitioners carry the burden of life-saving and provide for societal trust that is effective antibiotic therapy in the face of these changes. With a growing body of evidence supporting short-course, antimicrobial therapy "Shorter Is Better" should be the new mantra. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Hemorrhoids are vascular formations in the anal canal that is also known as piles. They serve as a cushioning of anterior venous channels and connective tissue in its natural condition, which aids in stool management. During defecating, internal hemorrhoids are frequently accompanied by painless, bright crimson rectal discharge. External hemorrhoids can cause discomfort and edema in the anus region. Aims and Objectives: The objectives of this study are to "compare between electrothermal bipolar vessel sealer hemorrhoidectomy versus conventional hemorrhoidectomy in patient of Grade IV hemorrhoids. Materials and Methods: The present study conducted in patients admitted in Gandhi medical college associated Hamidia Hospital, Bhopal carried out in the Department of General Surgery from April 2015 to September 2017. A total of 80 patients were included in the study with comparison between conventional hemorrhoidectomy (n=36) and electrothermal bipolar vessel sealer (ETBVS) (n=44) and comparison of recurrence of complications in them. Results: The mean surgical time was much shorter in ETBVS, as was post-operative pain, which was primarily reduced on the third and 4th post-operative days: discomfort also vanished quicker in ETBVS than in conventional procedure. ETBVS patients had less time off work, a shorter hospital stay, and a reduced risk of total problems. When compared to conventional procedures, the average length of operation in ETBVS was also much shorter (P<0.0001). Conclusion: When a considerable amount of tissue needs to be removed, ETBVS hemorrhoidectomy is a good option. This research confirms its usage as a first-line therapy for Grade IV hemorrhoids.
