Abstract: Submarine gas hydrates are a major global reservoir of the potent greenhouse gas methane. Since current assessments of worldwide hydrate-bound carbon vary by one order of magnitude, new technical efforts are required for improved and accurate hydrate quantifications. Here we present hydrate abundances determined for surface sediments at the high-flux Batumi seep area in the southeastern Black Sea at 840m water depth using state-of-the art autoclave technology. Pressure sediment cores of up to 2.65m in length were recovered with an autoclave piston corer backed by conventional gravity cores. Quantitative core degassing yielded volumetric gas/bulk sediment ratios of up to 20.3 proving hydrate presence. The cores represented late glacial to Holocene hemipelagic sediments with the shallowest hydrates found at 90cmbsf. Calculated methane concentrations in the different cores surpassed methane equilibrium concentrations in the two lowermost lithological Black Sea units sampled. The results indicated hydrate fractions of 5.2% of pore volume in the sapropelic Unit 2 and mean values of 21% pore volume in the lacustrine Unit 3. We calculate that the studied area of ~0.5km2 currently contains about 11.3kt of methane bound in shallow hydrates. Episodic detachment and rafting of such hydrates is suggested by a rugged seafloor topography along with variable thicknesses in lithologies. We propose that sealing by hydrate precipitation in coarse-grained deposits and gas accumulation beneath induces detachment of hydrate/sediment chunks. Floating hydrates will rapidly transport methane into shallower waters and potentially to the sea–atmosphere boundary. In contrast, persistent in situ dissociation of shallow hydrates appears unlikely in the near future as deep water warming by about 1.6°C and/or decrease in hydrostatic pressure corresponding to a sea level drop of about 130m would be required. Because hydrate detachment should be primarily controlled by internal factors in this area and in similar hydrated settings, it serves as source of methane in shallow waters and the atmosphere which is mainly decoupled from external forcing. This review describes methodology and software developments for acoustic data acquisition and determining parameters of gas bubble streams; shows geographical distribution of more than 3000 seeps in the Black Sea; presents data on methane fluxes from the deep-sea mud volcanoes; gives a model for evaluation of gas exchange in the water environment and methane emission from gas seeps to water column and atmosphere; explains modern views on the impact of cold seeps on the hydrochemical characteristics of the marine environment, the vertical water exchange, methanotrophic chemosynthesis and trophic structure of water; reveals a new form of life in the anoxic water column of the Black Sea, which is represented by a symbiotic community of anaerobic archaea and methane oxidizing and sulfate-reducing bacteria; contains estimates of potential environmental hazards due to methane discharge from the bottom of the Black Sea, and outlooks the possible use of cold seeps as a resource factors because they can be indications for shallow or deep hydrocarbon accumulations. Abstract: Four seep sites located within an ∼20km2 area offshore Georgia (Batumi seep area, Pechori Mound, Iberia Mound, and Colkheti Seep) show characteristic differences with respect to element concentrations, and oxygen, hydrogen, strontium, and chlorine isotope signatures in pore waters, as well as impregnation of sediments with petroleum and hydrocarbon potential. All seep sites have active gas seepage, near surface authigenic carbonates and gas hydrates. Cokheti Seep, Iberia Mound, and Pechori Mound are characterized by oil-stained sediments and gas seepage decoupled from deep fluid advection and bottom water intrusion induced by gas bubble release. Pechori Mound is further characterized by deep fluid advection of lower salinity pore fluids. The Pechori Mound pore fluids are altered by mineral/water reactions at elevated temperatures (between 60 and 110°C) indicated by heavier oxygen and lighter chlorine isotope values, distinct Li and B enrichment, and K depletion. Strontium isotope ratios indicate that fluids originate from late Oligocene strata. This finding is supported by the occurrence of hydrocarbon impregnations within the sediments. Furthermore, light hydrocarbons and high molecular weight impregnates indicate a predominant thermogenic origin for the gas and oil at Pechori Mound, Iberia Mound, and Colkheti Seep. C15+ hydrocarbons at the oil seeps are allochtonous, whereas those at the Batumi seep area are autochthonous. The presence of oleanane, an angiosperm biomarker, suggests that the hydrocarbon source rocks belong to the Maikopian Formation. In summary, all investigated seep sites show a high hydrocarbon potential and hydrocarbons of Iberia Mound, Colkheti Seep, and Pechori Mound are predominantly of thermogenic origin. Abstract: Methane concentrations and carbon stable isotopic ratios (δ13CCH4), oxygen concentrations and hydrographic parameters (CTD) were investigated in the water column of the north-western Black Sea during the summers of 2003 and 2004. Water samples were collected along a transect which crosses three methane seep areas in 90, 220, and 600m water depth. These active seeps strongly influence methane distribution in the overlying anoxic and oxic water column. Methane concentration and stable isotope (δ13CCH4) patterns indicate that water column stratification and microbial methane oxidation efficiently hamper the transfer of methane to the sea surface. Only the shelf seep site in 90m water depth acts as a direct source of atmospheric methane. Microbial methane oxidation and/or gas stripping seem to cause oxygen depletion above the two shallower seep areas. The methane flux from the 90m site into the water column is estimated to have been 0.599×106 molyr−1 (9.6 t yr−1) in 2003 and 0.347×106 molyr−1 (5.6 t yr−1) in 2004. Comparison of results from the two years shows different water column methane inventories in the deep part of the transect, implying a variable methane source strength at the 600m deep site. Abstract: The Dnepr paleo-delta area in the NW Black Sea is characterized by an abundant presence of methane seeps. During the expeditions of May–June 2003 and 2004 within the EU-funded CRIMEA project, detailed multibeam, seismic and hydro-acoustic water-column investigations were carried out to study the relation between the spatial distribution of methane seeps, sea-floor morphology and sub-surface structures. 2778 new methane seeps were detected on echosounding records in an area of 1540 km2. All seeps are located in the transition zone between the continental shelf and slope, in water depths of 66 to 825 m. The integration of the different geophysical datasets clearly indicates that methane seeps are not randomly distributed in this area, but are concentrated in specific locations. The depth limit for the majority of the detected seeps is 725 m water depth, which corresponds more or less with the stability limit for pure methane hydrate at the ambient bottom temperature (8.9 °C) in this part of the Black Sea. This suggests that, where gas hydrates are stable, they play the role of buffer for the upward migration of methane gas and thus prevent seepage of methane bubbles into the water column. Higher up on the margin, gas seeps are widespread, but accurate mapping illustrates that seeps occur preferentially in association with particular morphological and sub-surface features. On the shelf, the highest concentration of seeps is found in elongated depressions (pockmarks) above the margins of filled channels. On the continental slope where no pockmarks have been observed, seepage occurs along crests of sedimentary ridges. There, seepage is focussed by a parallel-stratified sediment cover that thins out towards the ridge crests. On the slope, seepage also appears in the vicinity of canyons (bottom, flanks and margins) or near the scarps of submarine landslides where mass-wasting breaches the fine-grained sediment cover that acts as a stratigraphic seal. The seismic data show the presence of a distinct “gas front,” which has been used to map the depth of the free gas within the sea-floor sediments. The depth of this gas front is variable and locally domes up to the sea floor. Where the gas front approaches the seafloor, gas bubbles were detected in the water column. A regional map of the sub-surface depth of the gas front emphasises this “gas front-versus-seep” relationship. The integration of all data sets indicates that the spatial distribution of methane seeps in the Dnepr paleo-delta is mainly controlled by the gas-hydrate stability zone as well as by stratigraphic and sedimentary factors. High concentrations of free C32 bis-homohopanoic acids (up to 433 μg/g dry wt) occur in microbial mats at methane seeps in anoxic Black Sea waters. These compounds show a strong preference for the ‘geological’ 17α(H),21β(H)- over the ‘biological’ 17β(H),21β(H)-configuration (αβ/ββ ratios up to 30.7) and indicate the potential formation of αβ-hopanoids in modern environments. Strong 13C-depletions (δ13C as low as −78.4‰ PDB) indicate an in situ generation of these hopanoids by biota involved in the anaerobic cycling of methane carbon. The inferred presence of hopanoids indigenous to a permanently anoxic marine environment is significant because these lipids are not known to occur in strictly anaerobic bacteria. Functioning of microbial communities in surface sediments of the Haakon Mosby underwater mud volcano (lat. 72°N) and in gas seepage fields of the Vestnesa Ridge was investigated using Mir-1 and Mir-2 deep-sea submersibles during the 40th voyage of the research vessel Academician Mstislav Keldysh. Large areas of sedimentary deposits of the Haakon Mosby mud volcano (HMMV) and pockmarks of the Vestnesa Ridge (VR) are covered with bacterial mats 0.1 to 0.5 cm thick. The microbial community making up bacterial mats of the HMMV was dominated by large filamentous bacteria with filaments measuring up to 100 μm in length and 2 to 8 μm in width. The occurrence of rosettes allowed the observed filamentous bacteria to be referred to the morphologically similar genera Leucothrix or Thiothrix. Three morphological types of filamentous bacteria were identified in bacterial mats covering VR pockmarks. Filaments of type one are morphologically similar with representatives of the genera Thioploca or Desmanthos. Type two filaments had numerous inclusions of sulfur and resembled representatives of the genus Thiothrix. The third morphological type was constituted by single filaments made up of tightly connected disk-like cells and can be assigned to the genus Beggiatoa. The rates of methane oxidation (up to 1570 μl C/(dm3 day)) and sulfate reduction (up to 17 mg S/(dm3day)) measured in the surface sediments of HMMV and VR were close to the maximum rates of these processes observed in heavily polluted regions of the northwestern shelf of the Black Sea. High rates of microbiological processes correlated with the high number of bacteria. The rate of methane production in sediments studied was notably lower and ranged from 0.1 to 3.5 μ CH4/(dm3 day). Large areas of the HMMV caldera were populated by pogonophoras, represented by the two species Sclerolinum sp. and Oligobrachia sp. The mass development of Sclerolinum sp. in the HMMV caldera was by the activity of aerobic methane-oxidizing bacteria localized inside the cells of these animals. Bacterial cells were also found in the trophosome tissue of Oligobrachia sp., but in cells of these bacteria, we did not observe the membrane structures typical of methanotrophs. The localization pattern of pogonophoras on the surface of reduced sediments suggests that the predominant bacteria in Oligobrachia tissues are sulfur-oxidizing endosymbionts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
