The objective of this study is to analyze the income differential of entrepreneurs and wage earners in the South region of Brazil, considering the importance of this subject so that efficient public policies can be realized in relation to incentives to entrepreneurship. For this purpose, the National Survey of Household Survey (PNAD-2015) database of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) is used. The method used consists of a probabilistic model with normal distribution (probit) as well as a model for the correction of the selection bias (heckit). Finally, the results indicate that the entrepreneur in the South region receives, on average, a higher remuneration than an individual randomly distributed in the sample. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research on statistical education in childhood is recent in Brazil. The research has been mainly driven by curriculum reforms and the creation of research groups that investigate teaching, learning, and teacher education practices. The present paper emerges from this scenario and has the aim of investigating practices of creative insubordination of teachers proposing and acting on problems of statistical and probabilistic literacy under a problematizing perspective. The intention is to ask: 'What evidence of statistical and probabilistic learning emerges when teacher-researchers participating in collaborative groups narrate their actions of creative insubordination?' The term 'creative insubordination' refers to professionals acting counter to rules and directives when seeking to protect those to whom they provide services and in order to provide better conditions. In the case of Brazilian teachers, it is argued that they can be creatively insubordinate by proposing problems in statistics and probability, listening to the children and encouraging them to problematize and create strategies and procedures for solving statistical problems, in a perspective that encompasses their social practices. From the analysis emerged a common aspect of the teachers' practices that refers to the fact that they provide an investigative atmosphere in which children discuss, question and reflect, proposing creative solutions to statistical problems. Purpose: This paper aims to highlight the contribution of ecological fairs to the promotion of sustainability in university campuses, based on a case study carried out at the University of Passo Fundo, located in Southern Brazil. Design/methodology/approach: Producers and consumers of the ecological fairs were interviewed to analyse how the social, economic and environmental spheres of sustainable development are impacted by these fairs. In total, 24 interviews were conducted. Findings: The results showed how fairs positively impact the academic and local community while bringing sustainability into university campuses. Research limitations/implications: The main limitations of this study were the number of interviews and the short period during when the study was conducted. Practical implications: This case study demonstrated how the promotion of ecological fairs on a university campus plays an important role in the implementation and practice of sustainability and can serve as an example for other institutions that intend to work on similar projects. Originality/value: This paper contributes to the literature by providing a discussion on how ecological fairs represent a good addition in the process of universities to become more sustainable and which aspects of each sustainability sphere are involved. Abstract In this paper, the Classic Lattice Spring Model is developed in order to be applied to probabilistic stability analyses of rock tunnels in low in situ stress environments, where the falling of blocks is the main failure mechanism. For this objective, the method is combined with the Synthetic Rock Mass technique and Barton-Bandis joint constitutive model, giving it a series of advantages: simulations with deformable blocks; possible formation of tension cracks; and an appropriate constitutive model for the mechanical behavior of joints. The use of cloud computing technology is proposed for efficient probabilistic analyses using the Monte Carlo simulation. A case study is presented based on an unsupported section of a shallow rock tunnel excavated in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. A 3D probabilistic stability analysis of the tunnel is performed with the proposed methodology. From the results, a positional probability map is elaborated, which indicates the likelihood of block failure around the excavation cross-section. The unstable zones indicated by the map are then compared to the failed region of the real tunnel so as to demonstrate the competence of the methodology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper gives a brief review of the papers presented at the Ninth International Conference on Stability of Ships and Ocean Vehicles that was held on September 25 to 29, 2006 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The review covers the following stability-related subjects: stability regulations, intact stability, wind and waves, damage stability, stability in operation, stability of high-speed craft, and offshore vehicles. Members of the Pirahã tribe use a "one-two-many" system of counting. I ask whether speakers of this innumerate language can appreciate larger numerosities without the benefit of words to encode them. This addresses the classic Whorfian question about whether language can determine thought. Results of numerical tasks with varying cognitive demands show that numerical cognition is clearly affected by the lack of a counting system in the language. Performance with quantities greater than three was remarkably poor, but showed a constant coefficient of variation, which is suggestive of an analog estimation process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reports of research with the Pirahã and Mundurukú Amazonian Indians of Brazil Lend themselves to discussions of the role of language in the origin of numerical concepts. The research findings indicate that, whether or not humans have an extensive counting list, they share with nonverbal animals a language-independent representation of number, with limited, scale-invariant precision. What causal role, then, does knowledge of the language of counting serve? We consider the strong Whorfian proposal, that of linguistic determinism; the weak Whorfian hypothesis, that language influences how we think; and that the "language of thought" maps to spoken language or symbol systems.
