Introduction: The global context highlights several challenges and manifestations stemming from population aging, among which mental health care for elderly people stands out. Primary health care (PHC), the largest gateway to Brazil's health care network, is strategic in promoting health and care, and in preventing diseases such as systemic arterial hypertension (SAH). It is known that elderly people with SAH present various symptoms of psychological distress and mental disorders that can aggravate cardiac symptoms. This can lead to health, social, and financial impacts on the lives of elderly people and their families. Objective: To identify the evidence on mental health care for hypertensive elderly people in PHC. Materials and methods: This is an integrative literature review; data was collected in January 2023 from the following databases: PubMed, BVS/Bireme, Medline, Lilacs, Cinahl, Scopus, and APA PsycINFO. The studies included were those available in full, in Spanish, English, and Portuguese, and which answered the research question elaborated following the PICo strategy. The article's search and selection processes were performed independently by two trained researchers through peer review. The Prisma guidelines were followed. Results: The studies found were published between 2008 and 2020 and showed two analysis categories: integrated care provided by the multi-professional team and measures that emphasize health-related quality of life. The studies highlighted integrated care management programs, qualification of the bond and territorialization, health measures that have an impact on psychological suffering, and group activities. Conclusions: Mental health care provided in an integrated and shared manner, combined with health activities and groups, is a powerful tool for elderly hypertensive patients in PHC. These strategies still have some challenges in certain contexts, but the review emphasizes the importance of consolidating this form of care, provided in PHC and has outcomes at all levels of care. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of self-care management practices - both with and without medication - in elderly hypertensive and diabetic patients in Campinas, Brazil, in three periods. Data from health surveys conducted in three periods 2001-2002, 2008-2009 and 2014-2015 were analyzed. The prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, the continuous use of medication, and all behavioral practices showed an overall increase in the period analyzed, with a significant drop in both the non-regular use of medications and routine doctor visits on the part of individuals without a private health plan. The results evidenced advances in diet-related practices among individuals without health plans as well as those who reported having healthcare coverage, highlighting improvements in drug treatment and physical activity. Adherence to medication and health behaviors for the management of morbidities was shown to be consistent in the period evaluated. These indicators reinforce the need to maintain and expand policies directed at health education and pharmaceutical assistance in the country. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The aging process can compromise the functional capacity of the elderly, affecting their autonomy/independence and, consequently, their quality of life. The aim of this study was to describe the functional capacity of the elderly cared by the family health program in the northern region of Brazil. Materials and Methods: Quantitative, cross-sectional study conducted with 130 elderly individuals living in urban and rural areas cared by Family Health. Functional capacity was evaluated through the Brazilian Version of Older Multidimensional Functional Assessment Questionnaire. Data analysis was performed through descriptive statistics and inferential analysis via Pearson and Mann-Whitney chi-square statistical tests, considering the significance level =0.05. Results: The study showed predominance of elderly women (57.7%), married (47.7%) with low level of schooling (59.2%). The sample had some degree of functional disability among the urban (78.4%) and rural (84.3%) elderly. Discussion: The functional capacity of the elderly should be preserved with health actions, given that it is characterized by a strong predictor of quality of life. Conclusions: Good functional capacity confers a better quality of life in the elderly, being a condition to provide active aging. Introduction: Projections indicate that Brazil will be the sixth country in the world with the highest number of elderly. The objective of the study was to characterize the socio-demographic profile, living, and health conditions of elderly primary care users of a municipality in the Amazon region of Brazil. It is timely because ageing of the population is growing rapidly, especially in developing countries like Brazil. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study with a sample of 441 individuals with ages below 60 years from a population of basic care users in the municipality of Benevides, in the Brazilian Amazon. Data were obtained through the Elder notebook, a clinical protocol from the Ministry of Health. The chi-squared test with 5% significance level was used to explore the associations between the variables of health and living conditions, and the sociodemographic variables. Results: The study population presented a predominantly young elderly profile (46.0%), who do not engage in physical activity (p <0.02), with chronic conditions and use of drugs to induce sleep (p <0.05). Discussion and Conclusions: The unfavorable health and living profile found in the elderly requires the adoption of enhanced health measures and comprehensive care budgets as a challenge to effectively meet their needs, mainly by nursing, in basic health care in the neediest areas of the Amazon region. Objective: This research was intended to understand the family relationships of adults with compromised functional capacity. Materials and Methods: It is an exploratory, descriptive study with a qualitative approach, based on the oral history method. The sample included 15 elderly adults who were being assisted by a family health unit, were living with family members, and had compromised functional capacity. The data were collected between March and April 2012, through in-depth interviews. The subject categories were: good family relationships, changes in family relationships, feeling of being a nuisance to the family, and feeling abandoned or neglected by the family. Result: The study found that elderly adults with compromised functional capacity experience a variety of feelings that range from joy, because they are respected and their needs are met, to sadness and shock over their family's negative adjustment to the situation and by being abandoned or neglected by their children. Conclusion: The dynamics of the family relationships of elderly adults change significantly when the person's functional capacity is compromised. With this in mind, health professionals, especially nurses, must recognize the challenges the family faces and be prepared to guide and train family members to satisfy the demands of caring for an elderly relative with compromised functional capacity and to favor rendering the care that is needed without jeopardizing family relationships. Aim: This study aimed to determinate the prevalence of falls in the elderly and its relationship with the functional capacity. Method: This is an epidemiological and cross-sectional study; a two-stage cluster sample of 240 male and female subjects aged over 60 years was used. Data were collected from November 2010 to February 2011. The following questionnaires were used: socio-demographic profile, assessment of falls, Functional Independence Measure, Lawton and Brody Scale. Significance was set at 0.05. To identify the occurrence of falls and their relation with functional capacity, the prevalence ratio and prevalence odds ratios were used, as well as multiple logistic regression. Results: Average age was 73.5 years (±8.4); 25% 80 years or more, with preponderance of female gender; 48.8% attended school between 1-4 years. The average was 1.33 falls (±0.472), with prevalence in women and elderly between 60 and 79 years old; the most frequently sites were the backyard and bathroom. Strong correlation between the level of functional independence and instrumental activities and age was found, but no relation between elderly victims of falls and the gender and age variables. Conclusion: Women who suffered falls related to functional independence were predominant, which can be prevented through elderly health promotion strategies, a policy that serves to offer living conditions to people in the aging process.
