A list of amphibian and reptile species that occur in open and forested areas of the Atlantic Forest in the municipality of Cruz das Almas, in the Recôncavo Baiano, eastern Brazil is presented. Field sampling occurred between January 2015 to March 2019, totalling 117 samples distributed in three areas: Parque Florestal Mata de Cazuzinha, Mata da Cascalheira, and Riacho do Machado. A total of 1,848 individuals of 69 species (31 anurans, 14 lizards, 19 snakes, two amphisbaenians, and three testudines) was recorded. Additionally, one individual of Ophiodes striatus was found in Mata da Cascalheira after the end of sampling, totalling 15 lizard species and 70 herpetofaunal species. The prevalence of open-area species and the presence of Phyllopezus lutzae, Diploglossus lessonae, and Dryadosaura nordestina in interior forest patches are discussed. We updated the distribution of Amphisbaena mertensi to northeastern central Brazil based on the finding of a specimen in an urban area in the Cerrado. This species had already been recorded in south-central Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. Our new record is 300 km away from the nearest point, Araguari, in the north of the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. We included a distribution map for the species in South America, and a list of the amphisbaenas species found in Distrito Federal and discuss the conservation of this group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new species of Amphisbaena is described from a Cerrado area in the southwestern region of the state of Bahia, northeastern Brazil. The new species is distinguishable from all other congeners by having a rounded snout; slender body with visible lateral and dorsal sulci; two rounded precloacal pores medially located; 230-241 body annuli; 19-22 caudal annuli; 12-14 dorsal and 14 ventral segments to a midbody annulus; tail with a marked autotomic constriction at caudal annuli 6-8; tail tip laterally compressed; three supralabials followed by one postsupralabial, and three infralabials followed by one postinfralabial on each side of the head. Uma nova espécie de Amphisbaena é descrita de uma região de Cerrado no sudoeste do estado da Bahia, nordeste do Brasil. Specimens (n= 41) of the amphisbaenid Amphisbaena wuchereri taken from a population in Minas Gerais state, south-eastern Brazil, were examined for gastrointestinal parasites. A single nematode species was found, Paradollfusnema amphisbaenia. This was a new host record for this nematode species. This parasite was encountered in the large intestine (prevalence of 100%), in the stomach (prevalence of 2%) and in the small intestine (prevalence of 7.3%). The intensity of infection ranged from 1 to 457 individual parasites per host and was positively correlated with body size of both male and female amphisbaenians. The discrepancy index (D) indicated that P. amphisbaenia tended to an even distribution in this host population. The nematode, which did not affect fat body mass, induced inflammatory infiltrations in the small intestine, indicating that the parasites might injure the host's organs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the first species list of squamate reptiles for the central region of the Chapada Diamantina, with a focus on the municipality of Mucugê, state of Bahia Brazil. The data provided were mostly collected in the Caraíbas estate, during vegetation clearing operations for agriculture. The remnant records were collected from roadkills encountered in Mucugê and neighboring municipalities. We found 64 species of squamate reptiles including 35 species of snakes, 25 of lizards and four of amphisbaenians. These records have already yielded three species descriptions with others likely to follow. This is evidence of the poorly documented herpetological diversity of the Chapada Diamantina. The present work highlights the need for further research and the potential of less traditional data sources such as roadkills to improve the knowledge of the herpetofauna of extensive and megadiverse countries like Brazil. We present a list of the reptiles of the municipality of Vitória, Espírito Santo, Brazil, compiled through primary data (specimens gathered by the authors) and secondary data (specimens housed at museums and records available in literature). We record 51 reptile species distributed by the orders Crocodylia (one species), Testudines (nine species), and Squamata (forty-one species), subdivided in amphisbaenians (three species), lizards (eleven species), and snakes (twentyseven species). We recorded six species that are listed as threatened in the Brazilian List of Endangered Species, as the terrestrial lizard Cnemidophorus nativo and the marine turtles Lepidochelys olivacea and Dermochelys coriacea. A new species in the genus Amphisbaena is described based on a single specimen road killed on MT 351 in the region under the influence of Manso Dam, at Chapada dos Guimaraes municipality, state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. It is a small amphisbaenid with two precloacal pores, 139 body annuli, 18/14 segments on the midbody and an immaculate white belly. A checklist of the 25 species of amphisbaenids recorded for the Cerrado biome is presented. Although ecological and/or historical features might be the reason for the unusual amphisbaenid richness of eight sympatric species at Manso Dam region, the extensive collecting efforts at this site seem to offer a better explanation for finding eight sympatric species. Uma nova especie de Amphisbaena e descrita com base em um exemplar coletado na rodovia MT 351, regiao de influencia da usina hidreletrica de Manso, Chapada dos Guimaraes, estado de Mato Grosso, Brasil. A nova especie distingue-se de todos os demais anfisbenideos que possuem dois poros pre-cloacais pelo menor numero de aneis corporais (139), 18 escamas dorsais e 14 escamas ventrais em um anel no meio do corpo e ventre imaculado. E apresentada uma lista dos anfisbenideos registrados no Cerrado, da qual constam 25 especies. Embora fatores ecologicos e/ou historicos possam ser empregados para explicar a elevada riqueza de anfisbenideos na regiao do reservatorio de Manso, o intenso esforco amostral naquela area parece melhor justificar o registro de oito especies simpatricas. We present here the first record of Amphisbaena mertensi in Minas Gerais state, southeastern Brazil. Through analysis of scientific collections, we found specimens of A. mertensi from municipalities of Patos de Minas, Uberaba, Indianópolis, Uberlândia and Araguari, in Triângulo Mineiro and Alto Paranaíba regions. These localities are inserted in the Cerrado biome, with Atlantic Forest enclaves, and represent an expansion of the previously known geographic distribution for the species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study reports the occurrence of helminths in the introduced species Tupinambis merianae (tegu lizard), and in two endemic species Trachylepis atlantica (small lizard) and Amphisbaena ridleyi (twohead- snake lizard ), from Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, State of Pernambuco, Brazil. Nine species of helminths were found, mainly in the digestive tract and accessory organs, with the following prevalence (P) and mean infection intensity (MII). Tupinambis merianae: Diaphanocephalus galeatus (P = 96%, MII = 20.5), Spinicauda spinicauda (P = 100%, MII = 197.8), and Oochoristica sp.1 (P = 20%, MII = 4.4). Trachylepis atlantica: Moaciria alvarengai (P = 20%, MII = 1.4), S. spinicauda (P = 92%, MII = 22.1), Mesocoelium monas (P = 4%, MII = 3.0), Platynosomum sp. (P = 8%, MII = 7.0), and Oochoristica sp.2 (P = 16%, MII = 1.25). Amphisbaena ridleyi: Aplectana albae (P = 96%, MII = 143.4), Thelandros alvarengai (P = 4%, MII = 1.0), Me. monas (P = 44%, MII = 2.8), Platynosomum sp. (P = 36%; MII = 13.8), and Oochoristica sp.2 (P = 48%; MII = 2.17). More than 80% of T. merianae were infected with 2, or more, helminth species. In Tr. atlantica, single-species infections were present in 50% of the specimens, but co-occurrence of 2 parasites was also high (41.7%). In A. ridleyi, multiple infections were more common, with up to = parasite species present. The helminth fauna observed allowed us to conclude that helminths can be carried together with their host when they colonize new geographic localities and that these introduced helminths can, in turn, colonize endemic, or native, hosts. Recently, the predominantly Amazonian amphisbaenian species Amphisbaena fuliginosa was reported from the Cerrado biome, where its distribution is presently restricted to three localities in Goiás state and one in Minas Gerais state. Here we present new data on its distribution range in the Cerrado biome, a new record in the state of Minas Gerais and the southernmost record for the species, extending its southern distribution limit by 35 km. Amphisbaena cuiabana (Strüssmann and Carvalho, 2001) is reported from three localities in Mato Grosso, Brazil. These new records extend its known distribution on 275 km northwest, 230 km west, 67 km east of its type-locality. We redefine the diagnosis of the species based on these additional specimens.
