Nosemosis is an important bee disease that is caused by microsporidia fungi of the Nosema genus, whose main etiological agents are Nosema apis and N. ceranae, both of which are found worldwide. In Brazil, the disease has been reported in several states but little is known about its occurrence and distribution in Bahia. This study identified the occurrence and distribution of nosemosis and its agents, N. apis and N. ceranae, in Apis mellifera L. bees collected from apiaries in the state of Bahia, Brazil. A total of 154 bee samples were collected and analyzed from 20 apiaries in six regions of the state. The hives sampled were evaluated for signs of the disease from December 2015 to July 2018. Molecular diagnosis was made using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). No signs of nosemosis were observed in the sampled apiaries, but from 154 samples analyzed via PCR, 96 were infected with N. ceranae. This pathogen was reported in samples from all six regions evaluated, and its occurrence in important apiculture regions of Bahia State is discussed in this study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There are few studies in the northern region of Brazil regarding honey consumption. Therefore, this research aimed to evaluate the perception of the population regarding the consumption of honey in the State of Roraima. An online questionnaire was prepared and applied in 2021 through the Survio website, containing 340 respondents in total. Regarding the socio-educational profile of the interviewees, 43% (145/340) belonged to the age group of 21 - 30 years, 65% (221/340) were female and incomplete higher education was the level of education with the highest percentage of respondents 39.4% (134/340). Regarding consumption, it was found that 45% (153/340) of respondents rarely consume honey and when asked about the reasons that would lead them to stop consuming honey, the price 35% (110/316) followed by health 34% (107/316) were the reasons with the highest number of respondents. For 77% (273/340) of the interviewees, honey has a food function. Regarding advertising, 75% (255/340) reported that they had never seen advertising encouraging the consumption of honey. The research showed that the consumption of honey in the State of Roraima has a low frequency when compared to other states in the country, such as the southern region. There is a need to increase improvements in marketing incentive actions, influencing the increase in honey consumption, as it is an important product of animal origin that should be more present on the consumer's table, always considering products of proven quality through the inspection services, reducing risks to consumer health. Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (MAPEOs) are considered to be one of the main sources of mercury release into the environment. Considering the gold mining activities, this study evaluated the Hg concentration in 27 apiaries (Apis spp.) in the South of the Legal Amazon, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. A total of 243 samples distributed in 81 samples of bees, 81 beeswax, and 81 of honeys, collected between the months of July and November 2022, were analyzed. One bee sample showed Hg concentration above the limit of quantification (68.8 ng g -1 ), 27 samples were between the limit of detection and limit of quantification (15 samples of bees, 8 of wax and 4 of honey). In all study areas, trace levels of Hg concentration were detected, 12 near MAPEOs areas and 16 near crop areas. It recorded that the honeys analyzed in this study in Mato Grosso are not contaminated by Hg, not offering any risk to consumers of the product. It is noteworthy that the use of bioindicator tools such as bees, beeswax, and honey is effective in relation to Hg monitoring in apiaries. It can also infer that the implementation of beekeeping in areas that will go through experience the process of environmental recovery, after the mining exploitation, is feasible, in line with permanent biomonitoring of the region., Competing Interests: Declarations. Mourecotelles Toro & Cabezas (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Colletinae) currently includes only nine valid species of cellophane bees found mostly in relatively-dry regions of western South America (Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, and Ecuador). In this paper, we describe and illustrate a new species of the genus - M. braziliensis Ferrari & Melo, sp. nov. - based on individuals of both sexes captured through trap-nesting in an environmental protection area (Araucárias Municipal Natural Park) and in flowers in different localities in southern Brazil. In total, we obtained 16 nests of M. braziliensis, each consisting of two to eleven brood cells arranged horizontally and lined with a cellophane-like substance. Of the 57 adult bees that emerged, 41 were male (mean weight 46.5 mg) and 16 were female (mean weight 58.9 mg), resulting in biased sex and investment ratios of 2.56:1 and 2.02:1, respectively. Both the numbers of provisioned cells and mortality rate were higher for trap nests with the narrowest bore diameter, although the differences in relation to other trap nests were not statistically significant. Pollen of nine different plant families were found in brood cells of M. braziliensis, but the species showed a clear preference for Fabaceae and Polygalaceae. Indeed, some of the specimens were collected while foraging in flowers of an unidentified species of Monnina Ruiz & Pav. (Polygalaceae) growing in swampy areas. An inventory and review of current pesticide regulatory risk assessment procedures for bees and other pollinators is presented. For North America, the European Union, Brazil, China, and Australia, the work is based on a review of the published literature, covering pesticide regulatory risk assessment approaches of high-income countries. For low- and middle income countries in the African, Pacific and Caribbean region, the work is based on an online questionnaire, conducted during the summer of 2021, followed by ad-hoc questions for further details and clarifications. In hindsight, the focus on the above-mentioned high-income countries is justified, as the expectations were met that it is a widespread practice for low- and middle-income countries to consult assessments by APVMA (Australia), USEPA (USA) and EFSA (European Union). Protection goals in the published approaches focus on bees, especially the honey bee as a prevailing model organism. Approaches incorporating further taxa, in particular with regard to local pollination services, may be adopted in the future, but are currently prevented by knowledge gaps. All established risk assessment procedures follow a tiered approach, and establishing a lower-tier system in regions currently lacking risk assessment procedures is a much more important step toward improved pollinator protection compared to risk refinement at higher tiers. Several established risk assessment approaches include toxicity classification, which are similar to each other in general, offering an opportunity to assess risks at a screening level without data on exposure. However, basic toxicity data on pesticides are currently not required at all in many low- and middle-income countries. Thus, establishment of a general requirement of data on acute toxicity for honey bees would markedly improve risk assessment in these countries, given that obtaining and assessing such data is a comparatively standardized endeavour and not particular resource demanding. Exposure is handled in different ways by the established risk assessment procedures, with similarities in considered application methods, but marked differences between further parameters of exposure scenarios, e.g. regarding spatial and temporal relation between pesticide application and exposure event, contaminated matrices considered etc. There is a general consensus in the established risk assessment procedures with regard to adopted guidelines and guidance documents used for effect assessment. Approaches established by EPPO, EFSA and USEPA all compare exposure-toxicity quotients to predefined levels of concern for identification of unresolved unacceptable risks to bees, while the calculative basis for these quotients and/or threshold values differs between these approaches, reflecting particular application or situation specific factors or models, accounting inter alia for background mortality, interspecific extrapolation, uncertainty, measured residue data. The other established risk assessment procedures largely follow the approaches of EPPO, EFSA or USEPA. Risk enveloping might offer a resource saving strategy to assess risks of pesticides with similar use patterns in similar cropping systems, and adopting an approach similar to a working example set by IBAMA in Brazil might be feasible, at least for similar geographic regions, given that there are some commonalities in pollinator depend crops among the surveyed low- and middle-income countries. Risk management and uncertainty analysis should always be linked to the risk assessment at all stages, and resulting risk mitigation measures should be practicable in the local agricultural context and comprehensible, while not compromising product efficacy. Little information about the contribution of plants to the production of honey by bees exists for southern Brazil. Information on this dynamic is crucial to maintaining the health of bees, the pollination of forests and assisting in the management of apiaries and meliponaries. The objective of the study was to elucidate which plants the bees visit for the production of honey in Rio Grande do Sul (RS), southern Brazil. 43 honey samples were selected from Apis mellifera, Tetragonisca angustula, Melipona quadrifasciata, Scaptotrigona bipunctata, Plebeia remota and Plebeia droryana. The honey samples were submitted to acetolysis. 110 pollen types were found in all honey samples from bees of Apis mellifera (97 pollen types), Melipona quadrifasciata quadrifasciata (14 pollen types), Tetragonisca angustula (46 pollen types), Scaptotrigona bipunctata (8 pollen types), Plebeia remota (17 pollen types) and Plebeia droryana (8 pollen types). The high pollen percentage of tree species in the samples stands out, ranging from 16.8% to 99.8%. The samples were grouped into seven groups by CONISS, called Melis-1, Melis-2, Melis-3, Melis-4, Melis-5, Melis-6 and Melis 7, and these are related to the floral resources of the studied bees. Some pollen types showed high percentages in honeys from Apis mellifera (pollen types of Eucalyptus sp. Myrcia type, Casearia sylvestris, Hovenia dulcis, Mimosa scabrella, Lamanonia ternata, Clethra scabra, Baccharis type and Weinmannia paulliniifolia), Tetragonisca angustula (pollen types of Eryngium sp./Petroselinum crispum, Handroanthus sp., Sorocea bonplandii and Parapiptadenia rigida), Melipona quadrifasciata quadrifasciata (pollen types of Myrcia type, Eucalyptus sp. and Mimosa bimucronata), Scaptotrigona bipunctata (pollen types of Allophylus edulis, Butia type and Parapiptadenia rigida), Plebeia remota (pollen types of Myrcia type, Butia type and Sebastiania sp.) and Plebeia droryana (pollen types of Myrcia type). Human activities have drastically altered natural ecosystems, mostly by converting forests into agricultural and urban areas. Brazilwood (Paubrasilia echinata) is an endangered tree endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic forest originally occurring along the whole coast. The species is largely planted in urban areas due to its ornamental potential. In this paper, we compared the phenology, floral traits and the reproductive success of P. echinata between urban and natural ecosystems. We have hypothesized that individuals in urban ecosystem will have: i) reproductive phenophases lasting longer than in natural, ii) lower number of pollen grains and ovules per flower, iii) lower richness and frequency of flower visitors, and iv) lower natural fruit and seed set. The study was carried out in urban green spaces of the city of Recife and in an Atlantic forest remnant, both in Pernambuco State, northeastern Brazil. The species flowered and fruited practically all year round in the urban ecosystem, contrasting with the annual pattern of flowering and fruiting observed in the natural area. We documented that brazilwood trees in urban areas had smaller inflorescences, fewer flowers/inflorescences, larger flowers, less pollen/flower, lower richness of floral visitors and lower fruit and seed set when compared to natural ecosystem. Also, when considering the most frequent effective pollinator, the invasive bee Apis mellifera predominated in urban, whereas the autochthonous pollinator Centris aenea prevailed in natural. Moreover, C. aenea acted as occasional pollinator in urban area because the flowers of P. echinata are larger in this ecosystem. Independent of the underlying mechanism, the brazilwood had an impoverished richness of native pollinators and a significant reduction in the reproductive success in urban ecosystem, indicating an impairment in the pollination process. The viability of planting trees in tropical urban areas as an ex-situ conservation alternative for species obligatory dependent on cross-pollination, such as P. echinata , may be compromised. We report on flowering phenology, floral morphology, pollinators, and nectar for eight species and a putative natural hybrid belonging to Agarista, Gaultheria and Gaylussacia that occur syntopically in a montane area. The campanulate to tubular flowers of eight out of nine Ericaceae taxa are primarily pollinated by either hummingbirds or bees. Flowering overlaps in all species but slight differences of floral shape, colour, and nectar characterize pollination by each pollinator group. Differences in floral traits are not large enough to exclude secondary pollinators. Thus, either the main pollinators of a species belonging to its syndrome, or secondary pollinators of a species belonging to different syndromes, may allow for inter-specific crosses. Red propolis is a substance produced by bees by mixing resins from plants with wax, oils, and other secretions to protect the hive against natural enemies. Dalbergia ecastaphyllum (L.) Taub. (Fabaceae) is the primary botanical source of the Brazilian red propolis, where bees Apis mellifera L. collect a reddish resin from the stems to produce propolis. This species occurs in coastal dune and mangrove ecosystems, where local beekeepers install their beehives for propolis production. The induction of propolis production was virtually unknown. Previous reports and field evidence suggested that the reddish resin available in D. ecastaphyllum stems was not produced spontaneously but induced by the presence of a parasitic insect that feeds on the plant's stems. Research in the apiaries of the beekeepers' association of Canavieiras, Bahia, Brazil, led to the capture of a jewel beetle of an unknown species of the genus Agrilus Curtis (Buprestidae). It was confirmed that this jewel beetle is a red propolis production inductor. The adult and immature of this new species, Agrilus propolis Migliore, Curletti, and Casari sp. nov. are here described and illustrated. Behavioral information on the biology and chemical ecology confirms that the reddish resin of D. ecastaphyllum is directly related to the beetle attack and only occurs when Agrilus propolis sp. nov. adults emerge from the plant stem. This information is very important for Brazilian propolis producers interested in expanding red propolis production, which can have favorable effects on the economy of mangrove communities, promoting income generation, creating new business opportunities, and helping to sustain local communities and families., (© 2022. Food production is challenged by changes in climate and land use and expanding human population growth. Proper pollination can increase the production and quality of fruit, nut, oil, and fiber crops. We reviewed crop dependence on pollinators and estimated the economic value of pollination per year for each crop in Brazil. We analyzed 141 crops and found that 85 depend on pollinators. Almost one-third of these crops have an essential or great dependence on pollinators. The economic contribution of pollinators totals ∼30% (∼US$12 billion) of the total annual agricultural income of the dependent crops (totalizing almost US$45 billion). However, half of these figures includes soybean crop (US$5.7 billion of pollinators' contribution and US$22 billion of annual income). Soybean was considered as having a modest dependence on pollinators, but this remains controversial because pollinator dependence might vary among different varieties cultivated in Brazil.
