Insecticide resistance survey is an in-situ biomonitoring method to assess potential impact of pesticides that exhibit direct economic consequences when leading to control failure of insect pest species. Nonetheless, the latter phenomenon is frequently neglected. Their spatial dependence and mapping are also seldom considered and when complexes of related pest species are involved, such as the rice stink bugs from the Neotropics, Oebalus poecilus, and O. ypsilongriseus, the scenario is even worst. Insecticide use is common against both species, particularly with the neonicotinoid thiamethoxam, and despite suspicion of a shift in O. poecilus historical dominance and complaints of control failure, the role of this insecticide in this context was never tested. Thus, we screened populations from both species for thiamethoxam resistance within rice fields from central Brazil. The levels of thiamethoxam resistance and control failure likelihood were recorded and their spatial dependence was tested and geographically mapped. The thiamethoxam potency was similar between species, which also exhibited overlapping levels of resistance. Thus, this insecticide does not seem involved in eventual shifts in species dominance and the occurrence of O. ypsilongriseus is frequent. Thiamethoxam resistance was detected in both species, nearly half of the populations of O. poecilus and about a third of O. ypsilongriseus, but at low levels (< ten-fold). As a consequence, the risk of control failure with thiamethoxam was also low. Spatial dependence was significant for both species and phenomena (i.e., thiamethoxam resistance and control failure), prevailing in about the same area and likely reflecting the local pattern of insecticide use. In the present study, we determined the critical stages and the key factors of mortality for Planococcus citri (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) in Brazilian coffee plantations using a life table to understand the role of natural biological control on its population. Predators, parasitoids, rainfall, sunlight, physiological disturbances and fungal diseases were collectively responsible for 98.79% in the total mortality of P. citri. Predators belonging to the Chrysopidae, Syrphidae, Dolichopodidae and Coccinellidae families were the most important mortality factors in the early developmental stages of P. citri (i.e. eggs and 1st and 2nd instar nymphs), whereas predators belonging to the Coccinellidae and Chrysopidae families were the most important mortality factors for the last instars (i.e. 3rd instars and adults) for P. citri. The generalist predators Harmonia axyridis, Chrysoperla genanigra and Chrysoperla externa were the key mortality factors for P. citri. The third nymph stage was considered the critical life stage (i.e. the life stage that most influences population size). Our results show that generalist predators and climatic factors are important sources of natural mortality of P. citri governing the population dynamics of this pest in the field. The majority of malignant cells present genetic instability with chromosome number changes plus segmental defects: these changes involve intact chromosomes and breakage-induced alterations. Some pathways of chromosomal instability have been proposed as random breakage, telomere fusion, and centromere fission. Chromosome alterations in tumor cells have been described in animal models and in vitro experiments. One important question is about possible discrepancies between animal models, in vitro studies, and the real events in cancer cells in vivo. Papillomaviruses are relevant agents in oncogenic processes related to action on host genome. Recently, many reports have discussed the presence of virus DNA in peripheral blood, in humans and in animals infected by papillomaviruses. The meaning of this event is of controversy: possible product of apoptosis occurring in cancer cells, metastasized cancer cells, or active DNA sequences circulating in bloodstream. This study compares chromosome aberrations detected in bovine cells, in peripheral blood cells, and in BPV lesion cells: the literature is poor in this type of study. Comparing chromosome aberrations described in the different cells, a common mechanism in their origin, can be suggested. The aim of this study was to analyse mastication and the sense of taste in 39 patients submitted to cancer treatment in different areas of the body and to compare these variables with those of 44 control individuals within the same age range. The following aspects were assessed: dental status ( DMFT); stimulated and non-stimulated salivary flow; sense of taste (salty, sweet, bitter and sour); and masticatory performance ( MP), through the calculation of X50. Logistic regression models were established to test the association between the independent variables and cancer treatment. Cancer patients had lesser stimulated salivary flow, a smaller number of teeth and occlusal units, worse MP, higher salty, sweet and sour taste scores and a lower bitter taste score ( P < 0·05). A significant positive correlation was found between MP and the DMFT index in both groups ( P < 0·05), meaning that a lower DMFT index value denoted a smaller X50 value (better masticatory performance). The logistic regression model revealed that patients who had undergone cancer treatment had a greater probability of exhibiting a smaller number of teeth, higher salty and smaller bitter taste scores ( P < 0·05). The currently existing sample procedures available for decision-making regarding the control of the coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) are time-consuming, expensive, and difficult to perform, compromising their adoption. In addition, the damage functions incorporated in such decision levels only consider the quantitative losses, while dismissing the qualitative losses. Traps containing ethanol, methanol, and benzaldehyde may allow cheap and easy decision-making. Our objective was to determine the economic injury level (ELL) for the adults of the coffee berry borer by using attractant-baited traps. We considered both qualitative and quantitative losses caused by the coffee borer in estimating the EILs. These EILs were determined for conventional and organic coffee under high and average plant yield. When the quantitative losses caused by H. hampei were considered alone, the EILs ranged from 7.9 to 23.7% of bored berries for high and average-yield conventional crops, respectively. For high and average-yield organic coffee the EILs varied from 24.4 to 47.6% of bored berries, respectively. When qualitative and quantitative losses caused by the pest were considered together, the EIL was 4.3% of bored berries for both conventional and organic coffee. The EILs for H. hampei associated to the coffee plants in the flowering, pinhead fruit, and ripening fruit stages were 426, 85, and 28 adults per attractive trap, respectively. We conducted a spatial case-control study nested in a dengue incidence cohort to explore the role of the spatial and socioeconomic factors in the proportion of symptomatic (cases) and inapparent primary dengue virus infections (controls). Cohort participants were children and adolescents (2 to 16 years of age) at the beginning of the follow-up. Case definitions were, for symptomatic cases, fever plus a positive lab result for acute dengue (NS1, RT-PCR, ELISA IgM/IgG), and for inapparent infection a positive result for dengue IgG (ELISA) in subjects without symptoms and with a previously negative result at baseline. The covariates included sociodemographic factors, residential location, and socioeconomic context variables of the census tracts of residence of cases and controls. We used principal component analysis to reduce the contextual covariates, with the component values assigned to each one based on their residences. The data were modeled in a Bayesian context, considering the spatial dependence. The final sample consisted of 692 children, 274 cases and 418 controls, from the first year of follow-up (2014-2015). Being male, older age, higher educational level of the head of the family and having a larger number of rooms in the household were associated with a greater chance of presenting dengue symptomatic infection at the individual level. The contextual covariates were not associated with the outcome. Inapparent dengue infection has extensive epidemiological consequences. Relying solely on notifications of symptomatic dengue infections underestimates the number of cases, preserves a silent source of the disease, potentially spreading the virus to unaffected areas.

Objective: To evaluate pathological changes in fossils from the Brazilian Intertropical Region (BIR), expanding the records of previously reported diseases for representatives of the Quaternary South American megafauna, including taxa not studied in previous works., Materials and Methods: We carried out a thorough macroscopic analysis of fifteen unpublished specimens belonging to representatives of the Quaternary megafauna of BIR to identify evidence of pathological alterations., Results: Alterations included: osteophytes in Toxodontidae, Megatheridae and E. laurillardi; rough subchondral bone, bone overgrowth and bone erosion in E. laurillardi; slit-shaped subchondral depressions in Equidae and E. laurillardi; and a triangular-shaped porous lesion in Mylodontidae., Conclusions: The alterations found allowed the recognition of the first cases of osteoarthritis for Toxodontidae and articular depressions for Equidae, and new cases of both diseases in Eremotherium laurillardi; a new case of osteochondritis dissecans for Mylodontidae; potential new cases of calcium pyrophosphate deposition and spondyloarthropathy for E. laurillardi SIGNIFICANCE: Our results provide additional evidence that calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease was widely spread among species of the South American megafauna and suggest that osteochondritis dissecans may have been relatively common among ground sloths., Limitations: The identification of calcium pyrophosphate deposition and spondyloarthropathy in E. laurillardi are quite tentative because the evidence found is ambiguous and the number of examined specimens is limited., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Inc. The emergence of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) represents an urgent threat to global public health due to the limited therapeutic options available to control this pathogen. This study aims to analyze the molecular epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance and virulence profile of CRKP isolated from patients at hospitals in Southeastern Brazil. KPC and other beta-lactamase genes were detected in all strains, which were also multidrug-resistant (MDR). In addition, 11 strains showed resistance to last-resort antimicrobials, such as colistin and tigecycline. MLST analysis revealed eight different sequence types (ST11, ST37, ST147, ST340, ST384, ST394, ST437, and ST628), being two (ST628 and ST394) reported for the first time in Brazil. Strains belonging to the clonal complex 258 (CC258) "high-risk clones" were prevalent in this study. The Galleria mellonella model showed the emergence of virulent CRKP strains in the healthcare environment and, suggests that colistin-resistant strains were associated with higher virulence. This study shows the presence of virulent CRKP-MDR strains in hospitals across Southeastern Brazil, and draws attention to the presence of highly virulent emerging CRKP-MDR ST628 strains, showing that virulent and resistant clones can emerge quickly, requiring constant monitoring., (© 2023. Introduction: Introduction: colorectal cancer (CRC) has an important impact on morbidity and mortality globally, and nitroxidative stress, inflammation, and nutritional status are linked with its progression. Aim: to analyze the association of inflammatory, anthropometric, functional, and oxidative markers with tumor stage in newly-diagnosed CRC patients at a public reference center in Maceió, Alagoas, Brazil. Methods: patient-generated subjective global assessment was applied, and weight, height, arm circumference, triceps skinfold (TSF), arm muscle circumference, and handgrip strength were obtained. A fasting blood sample was collected, centrifuged, and the serum was stored at -80 °C until the analysis. Malonaldehyde levels were quantified by HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) and cytokines, namely tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and interleukins IL-6, IL-8, and IL-17 were analyzed by ELISA. Patients were grouped according to cancer stage into group 1 (stage 0-III) and group 2 (stage IV). A binary logistic regression analysis was performed, adjusted for sex and age, to assess the relationships between the variables studied and cancer stage. Significance was considered when p < 0.05. Results: twenty-eight CRC patients were included, twenty (71.4 %) from group 1 and eight (28.6 %) from group 2. The binary logistic regression revealed that lower TSF adequacy (OR = 0.929; CI 95 % = 0.870-0.993; p = 0.029) and higher IL-6 levels (OR = 1.001; CI 95 % = 1.000-1.002; p = 0.012) increased the chance of patients having tumor stage IV. Conclusion: These data support that IL-6 and TSF may help in cancer stage assessment in clinical practice. Modulation of inflammation by IL-6 levels may be a target in CRC treatment.

This study aims to analyze the index of decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT) at age 12 in the Midwest Region and to identify associated factors, according to the National Oral Health Survey "SB Brasil 2010". This is a cross-sectional population-based study from the SB Brasil 2010 database, conducted in the capitals of Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, Federal District and a sample of municipalities in the region. Data were analyzed by the chi-square test and prevalence ratios with their respective confidence intervals, at a significance level of 5%. The Poisson regression was used in the multiple analysis to study the association between the outcome variable and the explanatory variables. The independent variables that were associated with the DMFT were: the state of residence in Mato Grosso, Goiás and Mato Grosso do Sul; the per capita income ≤ R$500.00; difficulties eating and sleeping, and reason for the visit was Pain/Extraction/Treatment/Other. Mean DMFT was 2.14 and the prevalence of dental caries affected 41% of adolescents.

The objective of this work was to investigate the effects of salinized water on Lippia gracilis by determining the ion accumulation capacity and morphophysiological changes as a function of salinity and time of exposure to stress. L. gracilis was irrigated with water containing different concentrations of salts and electrical conductivities. The analyses were conducted 25 and 50 days after stress (DAS), in leaf, stem/branches, and roots. Plant height (Hplants), basal stem diameter (Φstem), and mean unitary leaf area (ULA) were determined. After that, the plant material was dried, and the total dry biomass (TDB) (in g plant -1 ), leaf dry biomass (LDB), stem dry biomass (SDB), and the roots dry biomass (RDB) were determined. Based on these data, the following variables were calculated: total leaf area (TLA) in cm 2 plant -1 ; biomass allocation fraction (BAF) obtained by dividing the biomass of the stem, leaves, and roots, separately, with the total plant biomass; relative growth rate (RGR); net assimilation rate (NAR); leaf area ratio (LAR); specific leaf area (SLA); and sclerophylly index (SI). The concentrations of potassium and sodium ions were quantified by atomic absorption spectrophotometry and the chloride ion concentration was determined by argentometric titration. L. gracilis showed a variable response to salt stress as a function of time, having a considerable capacity to withstand an increasing load of toxic ions, while maintaining a positive growth rate, highlighting the potential use of the species in moderately saline environments., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. Good water quality for livestock is essential for animal health, supply of safe food and food production economy. Few countries have established water quality criteria for livestock for chemical contaminants. For those that have them, the values are quite variable among each other for the same substance due to differences in the approach for the acceptable daily intakes and algorithms for the calculation. In several countries, including Brazil, these standards are based on international or other countries' data, which differ among protected species, exposure scenarios, and levels of protection. The objective of this work was to discuss critical issues to establish chemical water quality criteria for livestock in Brazil. A discussion about the difficulties involved and the alternatives when sufficient data are not available is presented. Using the Canadian framework for reference, we provide recommendations on a revised framework and alternatives regarding the use of chronic studies as mandatory, defaulting to human health drinking water quality guidelines/criteria for livestock, the use of additional safety factors, and alternatives in the absence of toxicological data., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. A set of lesions are re-described and new pathological findings in foot bones of Panochthus sp. (Xenarthra, Cingulata) are presented. The material reexamined in fact presents enthesiophytes instead of osteoartrithis, as previously interpreted. Furthermore, Calcium Pyrophosphate Deposition Disease (CPPD) was observed, a lesion absent in previous report. CPPD also was found in another set of foot bones and it was associated with a congenital fusion of two sesamoids. The material studied were collected in two natural tank deposits, one in Paraíba (material reexamined) and other in Rio Grande do Norte (new pathological findings) State.

Background: The first human lung transplantation was performed by James Hardy in 1963 due to lung cancer. Currently, malignancy has its importance in the follow-up of transplanted patients because cancer risk is higher in this population and the main risk factor for this augmentation is immunosuppression. The most common types of cancer are non-melanoma skin cancer and post-transplantation lymphoproliferative diseases. The objective of this study is to measure the cancer incidence and its related mortality in lung-transplanted patients of a Brazilian institution., Methods: Review of the records of the 263 patients who underwent lung transplantation between April 2000 and April 2016 at the Heart Institute (InCor), focusing on the incidence of cancer, most common types of malignancies, and cancer mortality rate. We compared incidence and mortality with the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) database., Results: During the 16-year period, the total incidence of cancer was 10.3% with 27 cases diagnosed in 21 patients. The most common types of cancer were non-melanoma skin cancer, prostate cancer, and post-transplantation lymphoproliferative diseases. Comparing the incidences after 1-year, 5-year, and 10-year follow-up with the ISHLT database, they were similar in the first two periods and higher in the third period. As to cancer mortality rate, it was similar to the ISHLT database in both periods analyzed., Conclusion: The incidence of malignancies was higher in our transplanted patients in comparison with the Brazilian population, and the most frequent types of cancer are in accordance with the literature, except for prostate cancer. Cannabis use is highly prevalent worldwide and it is associated with psychosis, but its effects on brain structure and cognition are still controversial. The aim of this paper is to investigate cognitive functioning and brain structure in patients with their first episode of psychosis who used Cannabis. We examined gray matter and lateral ventricle volumes in 28 patients with first-episode psychosis and a history of Cannabis use, 78 patients without a history of Cannabis use and 80 healthy controls who had not used Cannabis. Cognition was assessed using forward and backwards digit span tests, from the Wechsler Memory Scale-Third Edition (WMS-III) and the Controlled Oral Word Association Test (COWAT). Patients with a history of Cannabis use had less brain abnormalities, characterized by gray matter and lateral ventricle volume preservation, as well as less attentional and executive impairments compared to patients without a history of Cannabis use. Cannabis-using patients who develop psychosis have less neurodevelopmental impairment and better cognitive reserve than other psychotic patients; perhaps reflecting different etiological processes., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Ten types of bovine papillomavirus (BPV) have been described and there are reports of viral transmission via blood. The presence of viral DNA in lymphocytes was described to be associated with chromosome instability in these cells. This study presents an evaluation of chromosome instability in short-term peripheral lymphocyte cultures from cows presenting skin papillomatosis, compared with asymptomatic infected animals and non-infected healthy bovines. In a total of 2203 cells, 918 (42%) showed at least one chromosome aberration: 42.7 (± 7.8) in animals with papillomatosis (BPV + W), 40.2 (± 11) in asymptomatic animals (BPV-W) and 4 (± 2) in control animals. Significant differences were found between the infected group (with or without symptoms) and the control group (P < 0.0001). The objective of this study was to verify the possible inclusion of the Salmonella/microsome mutagenicity assay in a groundwater monitoring program as a complementary assay to assess water quality. Groundwater samples belonging to seven wells from different types of aquifers were analyzed. Three different methods for sample preparation were used: membrane filtration; liquid-liquid and XAD-4 extraction. The filtered samples were tested using TA98, TA100, YG1041 and YG1042 and the water extracts only with TA98 and TA100. No mutagenic activity was observed in any of the 16 filtered samples tested. Out of the 10 samples analyzed using XAD-4 extraction, five showed mutagenic activity with potency ranging from 130 to 1500 revertants/L. Concerning the liquid-liquid extraction, from the 11 samples analyzed, 3 showed mutagenicity. The XAD-4 extraction was the most suitable sample preparation. TA98 without S9 was found to be the most sensitive testing condition. The wells presenting water samples with mutagenic activity belonged to unconfined aquifers, which are more vulnerable to contamination. The data suggest that Salmonella/microsome assay can be used as an efficient screening tool to monitor groundwater for mutagenic activity.

Commercial feedstuffs are a basic element in modern pet husbandry in the world. In dogs, the effect of mycotoxins is severe and can lead to death. Few reports on the influence of dietary mycotoxins were found in the scientific literature. The aims of this work were to isolate and identify the mycoflora and to determine the aflatoxins (AFs) natural occurrence in raw materials and ready dry pet food. Therefore, the aflatoxigenic capacity of Aspergillus flavus species was investigated. Aspergillus was the prevalent genera (65-89%) followed by Penicillium and Fusarium spp. Aspergillus flavus was the most prevalent species, followed by Aspergillus sydowii, Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus versicolor. Aspergillus flavus frequencies ranged from 58% to 86% except in sorghum meal. All samples assayed (except corn grains and ready pet food) showed Fusarium spp. contamination. Corn meal and corn meal and gluten samples had 100% Fusarium verticillioides. Fusarium graminearum was isolated from sorghum meal. Aspergillus flavus strains (75%) isolated from raw materials and 57% from pet food were able to produce AFs. All samples showed AFs contamination percentages over 70%; corn and sorghum meal obtained the highest AFs levels. Ready pet food did not show quantitative levels of the tested toxins. This is the first report of the aflatoxigenic capacity by A. flavus from Brazilian pet food.

Background: In low- and middle-income countries people with schizophrenia are reported to experience better outcomes than those in high-income countries., Aims: To examine structural brain differences in people with first-episode psychosis and controls in Brazil., Method: Magnetic resonance imaging using voxel-based morphometry was performed on 122 people with first-episode psychosis and 94 controls., Results: There were significant decreases in grey matter in the left superior temporal and inferior prefrontal cortices, insula bilaterally and the right hippocampal region in first-episode psychosis (P<0.05, corrected for multiple comparisons). The subgroup of people with schizophrenia (n=62) exhibited a similar pattern of decrease in grey matter relative to controls., Conclusions: Structural abnormalities reported in psychosis in high-income countries are also present in first-episode psychosis in Brazil.

The drosophilid Zaprionus indianus due to its economical importance as an insect pest in Brazil deserves more investigation into its genetics. Its mitotic karyotype and a line-drawing map of its polytene chromosomes are already available. This paper presents a photomap of Z. indianus polytene chromosomes, which was used as the reference map for identification of sections marked by in situ hybridization with gene probes. Hybridization signals for Hsp70 and Hsr-omega were detected, respectively, in sections 34B and 32C of chromosome V of Z. indianus, which indicates its homology to the chromosomal arm 3R of Drosophila melanogaster and, therefore, to Muller's element E. The main signal for Hsp83 gene probe hybridization was in section 17C of Z. indianus chromosome III, suggesting its homology to arm 3L of D. melanogaster and to element D of Muller. The Ubi probe hybridized in sections 10C of chromosome II and 17A of chromosome III. Probably the 17A is the polyubiquitin locus, with homology to arm 3L of D. melanogaster and to the mullerian D element, as suggested also by Hsp83 gene location. The Br-C gene was mapped in section 1D, near the tip of the X chromosome, indicating its homology to the X chromosome of D. melanogaster and to mullerian element A. The Dpp gene probe hybridized mainly in the section 32A of chromosome V and, at lower frequencies to other sections, although no signal was observed as expected in the correspondent mullerian B element. This result led to the suggestion of a rearrangement including the Dpp locus in Z. indianus, the secondary signals possibly pointing to related genes of the TGF-beta family. In conclusion, the results indicate that chromosomes X, III, V of Z. indianus are respectively correspondents to elements A, D, and E of Muller. At least chromosome V of Z. indianus seems to share synteny with the 3R arm of D. melanogaster, as indicated by the relative positions of Hsp70 and Hsr-omega, although the Dpp gene indicates a disruption of synteny in its distal region.

This work describes an event of unusually large mixing ratios of carbon monoxide, CO, observed during a typical rainy season time period in central Brazil, when concentrations are expected to be at low levels. CO measurements were performed in Campo Grande (20.02 degrees S; 54.5 degrees W), from July 2001 to October 2002, covering entire periods of the dry and wet seasons. From January to June, average CO was 131 parts per billion by volume (ppbv). During November/December, average CO is about 180 ppbv. On November 13, 521.9 and 565.6 ppbv were observed. It is shown that for this special event, in which there was practically no fire activity at or near the site, air parcels reaching the site were enriched with fire products from regions much further north, near the equatorial region, where the fire activity is delayed in time, compared to central Brazil.

Background: Common mental disorders (CMD) are critical issues in community studies. The 12-item version Chinese Health Questionnaire (CHQ-12) has not been sufficiently explored for use in Chinese communities around the world. This paper evaluates CMD among ethnic Chinese living in Brazil, by examining its psychometric properties and factorial structure of CHQ-12., Method: For 211 community subjects who completed the CHQ-12, we used the ROC curve analysis to calculate its internal consistency and criterion validity, adopting the interview SCAN as criterion. Principal component analysis was performed., Results: Considerable evidence was found for the internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) and item-total correlation of CHQ-12. The best cut-off point was 2/3,which allowed calculating criterion validity: 75%, sensitivity, 71% specificity, 55% PPV, 86% NPV, 28% misclassification rate and area under the ROC curve 0.728 (SE: 0.102, 95% CI: 0.528-0.927). The 3-dimensional structure of CHQ-12 could be described as somatic, depressive and worrying factor, accounting for 47.8% of the total variance., Conclusions: When applied to the Brazilian Chinese community, the CHQ-12 presented comparable psychopathologic pattern, psychometric properties and factorial structure to that of Taiwan.
