Objective: To describe leprosy involvement and physical disability profiles in children and adolescents under 15 years old. Methods: Ecological time series study, based on data from the Brazilian Notifiable Diseases Information System, including new cases of leprosy residing in Palmas (TO), from 2001 to 2020. Results: A total of 471 notified cases in children and adolescents under 15 years of age were evaluated, resulting in a detection coefficient of 26.5 per 100,000 inhabitants. Of these, 52% (n=243) were women, 5% (n=24) corresponded to grade two disability, and 36% (n=168) were diagnosed through spontaneous demand. The temporal trend analysis showed a 0.5% reduction in the detection coefficient. There was a significant decrease in the diagnosis of the undetermined and tuberculoid clinical forms and a significant increase in the dimorphous form. Diagnosis through contact examination increased significantly by 13.1% and that through spontaneous demand decreased by 4.9%. The detection coefficient of cases with grade two disability reduced significantly by 7.4% while those with grade one increased by 16.8%. Conclusions: Despite the downward trend in the detection coefficient in children and adolescents under 15 years of age and in cases with grade two disability, other factors indicate failure in the adequate management of leprosy in Palmas. In Brazil, three out four bat species from the genus Nyctinomops are known. Most of occurrences of these species are based on captures with mist-nets. In this study, we extend the distribution of Nyctinomops aurispinosus in Brazil, providing new records for the Brazilian states of Mato Grosso (1), Roraima (1), Pará (2) and Pernambuco (1). We also confirm the use of new types of shelter by N. aurispinosus, such as rock crevices in dryland environments and river boulders. We provide new fundamental information about the biology, behavioural and ecological patterns of this species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To investigate whether the classification of a patient's caries activity based on lesion activity assessment can predict the increment and progression of coronal and root caries lesions among adults. Methods: This population-based prospective cohort study followed 413 individuals (mean age 54.1) from southern Brazil for 4 years. Data collection included a questionnaire and clinical examination to record coronal/root caries and gingival recession. The main outcomes were caries increment measured as decayed, missing and filled tooth surfaces (DMFS) and caries progression (surface-level analysis). The main predictor variable was patients' caries activity at baseline ("caries-inactive" or "caries-active"). Negative binomial regression models (unadjusted and adjusted) were used. Results: Caries-active individuals were more likely to present DMFS increment than caries-inactive ones when migrations among DMFS components were considered (IRR [incidence risk ratio] = 1.26, 95%CI [confidence interval] = 1.01–1.58). On the other hand, no such association was found when these migrations were disregarded. The risk for coronal caries progression on filled surfaces was 90% higher among caries-active patients (IRR=1.9; 95%CI=1.4–2.6). In addition, patient's caries activity was able to predict higher risk for root caries progression in newly exposed root surfaces (IRR=1.9; 95%CI=1.0–3.6). Conclusion: The classification of a patient's caries activity based on lesion activity was able to foresee lesion progression on the coronal and root surfaces more susceptible to caries among adults. Objectives: There are limited longitudinal data regarding gingival inflammation in adults. This study aimed to assess changes in gingivitis over 4 years and to determine protective factors. Methods: A representative sample of 1023 adults living in Porto Alegre, Brazil, was obtained in the Caries‐Perio Collaboration Study. At follow‐up, 402 individuals were re‐examined. Gingivitis was assessed by the gingival bleeding index (GB) at both time points. Individuals were dichotomized into those showing reductions ≥ 15% and those showing reductions < 15% or increase in bleeding sites. Multivariable Poisson regression models were fitted with 11 possible risk factors, estimating relative risks (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Results: Percentage of individuals with GB ≥ 10% reduced from 72.4% to 53.8%. Bleeding sites significantly reduced (25.9%‐20.1%), and in a higher magnitude in buccal/palatal sites (34.1%‐24.0%). 31.0% of individuals presented GB reduction ≥ 15% in all sites. Toothbrushing ≥ 3 times/d increased 72% the probability of ≥15% GB reduction compared with ≤1/d (RR = 1.72; 95% CI 1.01‐3.16). For each 10 pack‐years smoked, the probability of ≥15% GB reduction was 3% higher (RR = 1.03; 95% CI: 1.01‐1.04). At buccal/palatal sites, normal weight individuals had 26% higher probability of reducing GB than overweight‐obese individuals (RR = 1.26; 95% CI: 1.01‐1.62). A 5% higher decrease in GB sites was observed in the absence than the presence of periodontitis. Younger individuals had higher reduction in GB sites. Conclusions: In the studied population, gingivitis reduced over time, with younger age, better oral hygiene, absence of periodontitis and normal weight being found to be protective factors. The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of gingivitis and calculus and their predictors in a population of adults in Brazil. A representative sample of 758 adults from 35 to 59 years of age from Porto Alegre city was examined. A structured questionnaire was applied. The Gingival Bleeding Index and the presence of calculus were measured at 4 sites/tooth. Multivariable logistic models were fitted to determine the predictors for gingival bleeding at >20% of sites. Overall, 96.5% (95% confidence interval [CI]=95.1-98.0) of individuals had ≥ 1 bleeding site. The mean percentages of sites with gingivitis and calculus were 26.1% and 44.6%, respectively. The odds of gingivitis decreased by ~45% for individuals ≥40 years old compared to younger adults. Individuals that never performed interproximal cleaning and non-whites had an approximately two times higher chance of gingivitis. Smokers had lower chances of gingivitis than never-smokers (odds ratio=0.40; 95% CI=0.24-0.68). Higher numbers of missing teeth were associated with higher chances of gingivitis. The percentage of calculus was significantly associated with skin color, education, proximal cleaning, smoking exposure, dental visits, and tooth loss. It can be concluded that the occurrence of gingivitis and calculus was high in this Brazilian population, and it was associated with age, skin color, education, self-reported proximal cleaning, smoking, dental care, and tooth loss. Objectives To assess the association between gingival recession ( GR) and oral health-related quality of life ( OHRQoL) in a Brazilian population of adults. Methods A representative sample from Porto Alegre city was drawn in 2011 using a multistage probability sampling strategy. For this study, 740 individuals, 35-59 years of age and with ≥6 teeth, were included. GR was assessed by two calibrated examiners at four sites in all present teeth. The Oral Health Impact Profile ( OHIP-14) was used to assess OHRQoL. OHIP-14 was dichotomized using 'fairly often' as the cutoff point for a negative impact. Multiple logistic regression models were fitted to define which descriptors of GR were associated with the dichotomous outcome of OHIP-14, including dentine hypersensitivity in separate models, adjusting for age, gender, socioeconomic status, smoking, dental care, and missing teeth. Results Mean OHIP was significantly higher for individuals with ≥1 tooth with GR ≥2, ≥3, ≥4, and ≥5 mm. Individuals with ≥1 tooth with GR ≥2 mm had approximately two times higher chance of having a negative impact than individuals without GR of this threshold [odds ratio ( OR) = 1.99, 95% confidence interval ( CI) 1.05-3.78]. When buccal and proximal sites were analyzed separately, the presence of GR was significantly associated with worst quality of life only in anterior and not in posterior teeth. GR in the lower arch had no impact on OHRQoL. GR ≥2 mm affected only physical pain ( OR = 2.61; 95% CI 1.06-6.42), whereas GR ≥4 mm affected functional limitation, physical pain, psychological discomfort, physical and psychological disabilities, with ORs ranging from 1.43 to 1.91. Dentine hypersensitivity alone was not associated with OHRQoL, but it modified the association between GR and OHIP when present concomitantly with GR, mainly in buccal sites. Conclusions OHRQoL is poorer in this adult population in the presence of GR, mainly in upper and anterior teeth. Dentine hypersensitivity and esthetics were found to be factors linking GR to OHRQoL. Aim To describe estimates and determine risk indicators of gingival recession in the urban population of Porto Alegre, Brazil. Materials and Methods A representative sample of 1023 adults 35 years and older was obtained using a multistage probability sampling strategy. A structured questionnaire was applied and a clinical examination was performed at four sites of all teeth present. Complex survey commands were used for the estimation of gingival recession ( GR) and during risk assessment. Results GR ≥1 mm affected 99.7% of subjects. The percentage of subjects with ≥1 tooth with GR ≥3 mm and ≥5 mm was 75.4% and 40.7%, respectively. 67.6%, 27.8% and 9.5% of teeth per subject showed GR ≥1 mm, ≥3 mm and ≥5 mm, respectively. Older age, male gender, smoking exposure, poor self-reported oral hygiene, history of periodontal treatment and high percentage of calculus were significant risk indicators for GR found after multivariable risk assessment. When buccal GR was analysed separately, only gender, age, smoking and high education were significant risk indicators for GR, whereas variables related to oral hygiene were not associated. Conclusion GR is highly prevalent in this Brazilian population. Preventive strategies for GR may target a variety of socio-demographic, behavioural and clinical risk indicators. Background: Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a clinical condition with potential implications for patients. However, little is known about its occurrence and determinants in the general population. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence and risk indicators of DH in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Methods: A representative multistage probability sample of 1,023 adults aged ≥35 years was obtained. Individuals were interviewed and clinically examined in their homes. DH was assessed dichotomously in all present teeth by a blast of air and a manual probe. Teeth restored with crowns and presenting with carious cavitation were excluded. Survey logistic regression using sampling weights was applied to assess demographics and behavioral and clinical determinants. Results: Overall prevalence estimates for DH diagnosed by air and probe were 33.4% and 34.2%. DH affected ≈1 tooth per individual, and approximately 10% of teeth with gingival recession (GR) had DH. In a multivariable model for DH diagnosed with air, females had increased chance of DH (odds ratio [OR] = 2.14; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.57 to 2.91). Smoking, periodontal treatment, and GR were also associated with increased DH risk. The chance of DH was lower (OR = 0.47, 95% CI = 0.29 to 0.76) among individuals ≥60 than among those aged 35 to 49 years. Oral hygiene practices, socioeconomic and education status, dental visits, and gingival inflammation were not associated with DH. Abstract: The aim of this article is to show the opportunities for penetration of new renewable energy sources into the Brazilian energy mix, enabling it to continue generating a high quantity of clean energy compared to the world average. Different scenarios for the evolution of such sources in Brazil and in the world were analyzed within the 2010–2030 horizon. The study showed not only the benefits brought by these sources in terms of GHG emission avoidance but also the impact in terms of employment creation and the public investment necessary to obtain such benefits. Brazil is a huge country with at least 100 million readers with a total population of 200 million. Is this a good number for you? The article describes the developments of the Brazilian book market and publishing industry. Sales in 2009 were an estimated $2.5 billion for more than 228 million copies of books sold. But a country this big, as it is almost 50% of entire South America, confronts several major challenges including a real lack of bookstores. But one of the channels that is growing every year are the door-to-door sales, it has grown from 5% of all sales in 2006 to 17% in 2009. In a country this big, the digital or eBooks may also be a very good strategy to get to more readers, but it is still a small market in Brazil. Context: Research on palliative care (PC) can be used as a direct measure to assess the level of PC development in a country or region.Objectives: To investigate the scientific production in the field of PC in South American countries over the last two decades.Methods: The search was performed using the terms "palliative care," "hospice care," "hospices," and "terminal care" combined with the names of South American countries in several databases. The trend in publications over time was analyzed by linear equations (R2) and by calculating the annual percentage change (APC). The article citations were extracted from Web of Science (WOS), Scopus and Google Scholar, and the countries' impact factors (IFc) were calculated.Results: Of the 4259 identified articles, 641 were included in the analysis. There was a clear increase in the number of publications over the analyzed period (R2 = 0.8794, APC = 14.42%). Brazil was the country with the highest number of publications (n = 389); however, after adjustments by population, GDP and number of researchers, Chile was the country with the greatest prominence, including the highest IF in WOS (4.409). Only 8.3% of publications were systematic review, clinical trial or cohort studies; only 15.4% were funded.Conclusion: This bibliometric review identified an annual increase of 14% in the number of scientific publications by researchers from South America over the last 20 years. Although Brazil produced the most articles, Chile, had the most efficient scientific production. In general, the articles had low potential for scientific impact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Quality indicators for the Brazilian cervical cancer screening programme can provide a perspective on its effectiveness in Brazilian macro-regions and states. The aim of this study was to perform a trend analysis of the cervical cancer screening program's quality indicators, according to Brazilian regions and states, from 2006 to 2013.Methods: Using information from approximately 62,000,000 exams obtained from the Information System of Cervical Cancer Screening (SISCOLO), joinpoint analysis was used to calculate the Annual Percentage Change (APC).Results: The estimated number of women in the target age group (25-64 years) who underwent Pap testing over a three-year interval was lower than that recommended by international guidelines in the North, Northeast and Midwest regions, and the trends for this indicator remained stationary over the years in all regions of Brazil. Overall, the index of positivity in Brazilian regions and states is below that preconized by the Brazilian National Cancer Institute (INCA). Additionally, the frequencies of unsatisfactory cases are in line with international guidelines but above those preconized by INCA guidelines. All positive cytological diagnoses were lower than those preconized by INCA.Conclusions: The results show that the cervical cancer screening programme is still far from efficient because most of the quality indicators in Brazilian regions and states are outside of the parameters preconized by national and international organizations. • There is a limited number of collection points for waste batteries in Vale do Aço. • Local residents and retailers have limited information about batteries management. • Local waste pickers are neither trained nor equipped to handle waste batteries. • Awareness is the main factor affecting the disposal method adopted by consumers. • More than half of Vale do Aço's municipalities lack solid waste management plans. The Brazilian National Solid Waste Policy (BNSWP) determines that reverse logistics (RL) of waste batteries is mandatory and adopts the principle of shared responsibility among stakeholders. In this work, we sought to diagnose the current state of the RL chain for batteries in Vale do Aço, Brazil, and identify challenges and potentialities related to its improvement. Data were obtained by means of questionnaires sent to the main stakeholders involved in the batteries RL chain and by consultation of official Brazilian databases. The results showed that the main obstacles to the implementation of the RL of portable batteries in the region are: the lack of information by consumers and retailers regarding the BNSWP and management of waste batteries; the existence of few collection and consolidation points in the region; lack of municipal waste management plans; and lack of sustainability of waste picker organizations. The identified potentialities were: the good receptivity of environmental education actions by the population; the possibility of taking advantage of direct logistics of local retail chains to collect waste; the existence of a special waste management and transportation company in the region; and the existence of waste picker organizations interested in integrating the RL system. Finally, by a SWOT analysis, strategies for the implementation of a more effective RL system were drawn up. This work can serve as a basis for the structuring and implementation of the batteries RL system at the Metropolitan Region of Vale do Aço (MRVA) and can be a reference for other settings. Abstract: The economic importance of sheep production is increasing worldwide simultaneously with the emergence of parasitic resistance. This study aimed to survey the current situation of management practices and parasite resistance in sheep flocks in São Paulo state, Brazil. A questionnaire was given to 35 sheep farmers to obtain information related to flock management practices. Of these flocks, 30 were submitted to the fecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) with at least one of the five following anthelmintics: albendazole, closantel, ivermectin, levamisole, and moxidectin, for comparison against an untreated control group. In the survey, the median number animals per flock was 301, mainly of the Santa Ines breed (in 75.8% of the flocks) and crossbred animals (in 54.5% of the flocks). The predominant farming system was semi-intensive (82.9%), using rotational grazing (80%). Selective treatment was based on FAMACHA grade (47.1%) and in clinical signs (41.2%). The most often applied anthelmintics were macrocyclic lactones (42.9–54.2% in the last three applications). Considering the anthelmintics employed in this study, 10.7% of the farms’ flocks were resistant to three, 35.7% to four, and 53.6% to all five anthelmintics. The main helminth genera observed before and after treatments were Haemonchus sp. (75.8%) and Trichostrongylus sp. (19.1%), but all observed genera (Cooperia sp., Oesophagostomum sp., and Strongyloides sp.) were detected by the FECRT. Considering efficacy values less than or equal to 90% in the FECRT as resistant, 100% of flocks were resistant to albendazole and ivermectin, 96.6% to moxidectin, 92.9% to closantel, and 53.6% to levamisole. It is thus possible to conclude that multidrug resistance is widespread in sheep flocks in São Paulo state, Brazil, and this involves all prevalent helminth genera. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Objective: This study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics of the pediatric population with COVID-19 in an Emergency Department (ED) of a Brazilian general hospital., Methods: Epidemiological and clinical data of patients younger than 20 years old were collected from patients' medical records from February 2020 to July 2021. Most of the epidemiological data described pertains to hospitalized patients. We also reviewed coinfections, treatment, and outcomes and compared the first and second waves of COVID-19., Results: We identified a total of 1303 episodes of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The median time from symptom onset to diagnosis was three days. Symptoms were present in 92.3% of the patients. The most common symptoms were fever (45.2%), nasal congestion/discharge (44.2%), and cough (39.4%). Chest radiography and tomography were performed in 7.7 and 3.3% of cases, with abnormal findings in 29.7 and 53.4%, respectively. Hospital admissions occurred in 3.5% of patients, mainly in the presence of comorbidities, in children under five years old and in those who presented to the ED during the first wave of COVID-19. Coinfection with a viral agent was identified in 20% of the 71 cases tested in this study, and a positive rapid test for Streptococcus pyogenes was found in 8% of the 174 cases tested, with no impact of these coinfections on hospitalization., Conclusions: We found that COVID-19 was a mild disease in most children in our study population, with most hospitalizations and readmissions occurring during the first wave of COVID-19.

The thermal dynamics of the upper atmosphere, especially in the mesosphere, have been improving our understanding about the effects of climate change, as well as how the dynamics and general circulation in the upper atmosphere are driven by different types of waves, such as the atmospheric gravity waves, planetary waves and atmospheric tides. In order to study the upper atmospheric temperature variability and gravity waves, several research groups have been employing the remote technique of observing the airglow emissions originated in the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere, besides emissions from the ionosphere. INPE's airglow group started the studies on emissions from the upper atmosphere to investigate temperature and dynamics in the mesosphere, thermosphere/ionosphere at the end of 70's. However, only in 2001 this group sent the first airglow experiment to the Brazilian Antarctic Station Comandante Ferraz (EACF) to measure the OH (8-3) emission and temperature. From that year to 2014, several other experiments were carried out at EACF, not only to measure the temperature and airglow intensities, but also to observe gravity waves, winds and other related phenomena. This paper presents airglow experiments at EACF from 2001 to the present, including illustrations, examples of already published results, and unpublished data.

Aim: To investigate the association between 11 oral conditions and oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL)., Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study used a multistage sampling strategy to draw a representative sample of adults aged ≥35 years living in Porto Alegre, Brazil. OHRQoL was assessed using OHIP-14. Oral examinations were conducted to assess gingivitis, dental calculus, tooth loss, gingival recession (GR), dentine hypersensitivity (DHS), dental caries (DFT), dental erosion, and non-carious cervical lesions (NCCL). Questionnaires recorded the following self-reported oral variables: xerostomia, halitosis, and perceived need for dental treatment. Structural Equation Models were used to assess the associations adjusting to demographic and behavioral variables., Results: 1022 individuals were analyzed. The overall OHIP mean equaled 9.2 ± 9.7 points. Xerostomia [coefficient (coef)=0.10], halitosis (coef=0.28), DFT (coef=0.16), and DHS (coef=0.19) were significantly and directly associated with negative impacts of OHIP-14. GR was significantly and indirectly associated with poor OHRQoL due to higher DHS. Perceived need for dental treatment was significantly and directly associated with higher OHIP-14 (coef=0,40)., Conclusions: Poor OHRQoL was observed in a sample of Brazilian adults and old people. Five important oral conditions were associated to poor OHRQoL. Tooth loss, gingivitis, calculus, dental erosion and NCCL did not associate with OHRQoL., Clinical Significance: Poorer oral health related quality of life is observed in a Brazilian urban area compared to other parts of the world. A new butterfly species, Dynamine sideria Rosa & Freitas sp. nov. (Nymphalidae: Biblidinae), is described from the Atlantic Forest in Southeastern Brazil. The new species is known from only seven adult specimens and three observation records (two from photographs) in five sites, including a large forest reserve, forest fragments on a disturbed landscape, and a backyard in a dense urban site. Aim: To describe changes in gingival recession (GR) at buccal and palatal sites in adults over an average follow-up of 4 years., Materials and Methods: Baseline data were obtained from a multistage probabilistic representative sample of 1023 individuals aged ≥35 years from Porto Alegre, Brazil. Buccal and palatal/lingual GR were analysed., Results: 402 individuals (6,862 teeth) were followed. At baseline, 3,356 (48.9%) teeth did not have GR at the buccal site and 1206 developed the condition overtime (incidence =35.9%; 95% CI 32.6-38.9). Percentage of incident teeth was higher among individuals with (42.3%) than those without (29.5%) periodontitis stages III/IV. Also, 38.5% of teeth with proximal attachment loss at follow-up had incident GR compared to 7.6% of those without proximal attachment loss. Incidence of palatal GR was observed in 32.5% of teeth (95% CI 29.7-35.3). Mean buccal and palatal/lingual GR incidence was 2.11 mm and 2.33 mm, whereas buccal and palatal/lingual GR progression equalled 0.40 mm and 0.48 mm. Brazil is a country with strong socioeconomic disparities, which may explain the different rates of cervical cancer incidence and mortality and influence the quality of cervical cancer screening tests. The aim of this study was to perform a trend analysis of some quality indicators of Pap smears according to the Municipal Human Development Index (MHDI). Information about cytopathological exams (approximately 65,000,000) performed from 2006 to 2014 in women ages 25 to 64 years was obtained from the Cervical Cancer Information System (SISCOLO). The average annual percentage change (AAPC) for each indicator was calculated using the Joinpoint Regression Program, according to MHDI levels. Very low frequencies of unsatisfactory cases (<5%) were observed at different MHDI levels. Although the positivity index in the low- and medium-MHDI groups has increased, the values remained below international recommendations (3%-10%). The HSIL (high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion) percentage remained stationary at all levels of the MHDI. In the low- and medium-MHDI groups, most quality indicators were below the recommendations by Brazilian National Cancer Institute INCA, with no improvement trend; in the high-MHDI group, the majority of the indicators also presented no improvement, although they show slightly better quality indicators. The MHDI should be considered in the definition of the policies of the screening program for cervical cancer in Brazil, and the current program may require adjustments to achieve improved efficiency., (©2019 American Association for Cancer Research.)

Objective: to analyze the strategies implemented by nurses to reconfigure palliative oncological care due to the hospital accreditation process in Hospital do Câncer IV (Hospital of Cancer IV)., Method: qualitative research of historical-social approach, whose direct sources in use were written documents and four spoken accounts., Results: implemented strategies were: creation of the Nursing Division; nursing staff management; consolidation of Continuing Education sector; creation of Internal Nursing Bylaws through development of norms and routines; meetings; discussion of clinical cases; training and classes; creation of Núcleo de Assistência de Enfermagem (Nursing Assistance Core); creation of a tumoral and ostomy wound-dressing ambulatory; and organization of the 5th Vital Sign Forum. Final considerations: nurses, supported by an alliance with the institution directors, implemented effective strategies and reached significant advancement. As they took part in this endeavor, they became legitimate spokespeople of an authorized discourse in the field of oncological nursing care in Brazil.

The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of gingivitis and calculus and their predictors in a population of adults in Brazil. A representative sample of 758 adults from 35 to 59 years of age from Porto Alegre city was examined. A structured questionnaire was applied. The Gingival Bleeding Index and the presence of calculus were measured at 4 sites/tooth. Multivariable logistic models were fitted to determine the predictors for gingival bleeding at >20% of sites. Overall, 96.5% (95% confidence interval [CI]=95.1-98.0) of individuals had ≥ 1 bleeding site. The mean percentages of sites with gingivitis and calculus were 26.1% and 44.6%, respectively. The odds of gingivitis decreased by ∼45% for individuals ≥40 years old compared to younger adults. Individuals that never performed interproximal cleaning and non-whites had an approximately two times higher chance of gingivitis. Smokers had lower chances of gingivitis than never-smokers (odds ratio=0.40; 95% CI=0.24-0.68). Higher numbers of missing teeth were associated with higher chances of gingivitis. The percentage of calculus was significantly associated with skin color, education, proximal cleaning, smoking exposure, dental visits, and tooth loss. It can be concluded that the occurrence of gingivitis and calculus was high in this Brazilian population, and it was associated with age, skin color, education, self-reported proximal cleaning, smoking, dental care, and tooth loss.

Background: Because of the influence of genetics on animal production and the risk of losing genetic diversity of naturally adapted breeds, this study evaluated the genetic diversity of sheep of the Morada Nova breed belonging to an animal science institute in Brazil. The herd in question is one of the country's most representative of the breed. Samples of DNA extracted from the plasma of 61 animals were used for later analysis of the genotypes using microsatellite molecular markers., Results: The polymorphic information content was 0.66, the observed heterozygosity was 0.65 and the fixation index was 0.048. According to the results, there is moderate genetic diversity in the studied population, suggesting the implantation of breeding programs aimed at conservation of the observed genetic diversity., Conclusion: The results obtained in this study will be of great importance to decisions on herd structure, besides contributing to other work to be carried out at the research center.

Background: This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the association between body mass index (BMI) and body fat with gingivitis in 613 adults of Porto Alegre, Brazil., Methods: Individuals with at least four teeth were included in this study. They were identified through a multi-stage probability sampling, considering the city distribution of sex and age. Structured interviews were conducted by trained researchers in order to collect sociodemographic characteristics, behavioral habits, and systemic impaired conditions. Visible plaque and modified gingival index were assessed by a trained and calibrated examiner. Additionally, weight, height, and body fat percentage were measured. Body fat percentage was determined by bioelectrical-impedance analysis using a portable electrical micro-current monitor. The median sites with marginal bleeding was 20%, and used as a cutoff point for gingivitis. Crude and adjusted prevalence ratio by mean Poisson regression with robust variance were calculated. Two multivariable models were performed in order to associate both independent and dependent variables., Results: In the multivariable analysis that included BMI, no significant association with gingivitis was detected. On the other hand, the multivariable model that included body fat showed that very high body fat category (PR 1.22; 95% CI: 1.01 to 1.49) was significantly associated with higher marginal gingival bleeding., Conclusion: Very high body fat category rather than BMI was significantly associated with higher positive marginal gingival bleeding in adults., (© 2018 American Academy of Periodontology.)

Objectives: This study sought to report the late multimodality imaging and clinical outcomes of the novel poly-l-lactic-acid-based DESolve novolimus-eluting bioresorbable coronary scaffold for the treatment of de novo coronary lesions., Background: Bioresorbable scaffolds are an alternative to drug-eluting metallic stents and provide temporary vascular scaffolding, which potentially may allow vessel restoration and reduce the risk of future adverse events., Methods: Overall, 126 patients were enrolled at 13 international sites between November 2011 and June 2012. The primary endpoint was in-scaffold late lumen loss at 6 months. Major adverse cardiac events, the main safety endpoint, were defined as the composite of cardiac death, target vessel myocardial infarction, or clinically indicated target lesion revascularization. All patients underwent angiography at 6 months. Serial intravascular ultrasound and optical coherence tomography were performed in a subset of patients., Results: The scaffold device success rate was 97% (n = 122 of 126), and procedural success was 100% (n = 122 of 122). The major adverse cardiac event rate was 3.3% (n = 4 of 122) at 6 months and 7.4% (n = 9 of 122) at 24 months, including 1 probable stent thrombosis within the first month. At 6-month angiographic follow-up, in-scaffold late lumen loss was 0.20 ± 0.32 mm. Paired intravascular ultrasound analysis demonstrated a significant increase in vessel, lumen and scaffold dimensions between post-procedure and 6-month follow-up, and strut-level optical coherence tomography analysis showed full strut coverage in 99 ± 1.7%., Conclusions: Our results showed favorable performance of the DESolve scaffold, effective inhibition of neointimal hyperplasia, and for the first time, early luminal and scaffold growth at 6 months with sustained efficacy and safety through 2 years. Background: The Cervical Cancer Database of the Brazilian National Health Service (SISCOLO) contains information regarding all cervical cytological tests and, if properly explored, can be used as a tool for monitoring and managing the cervical cancer screening program. The aim of this study was to perform a historical analysis of the cervical cancer screening program in Brazil from 2006 to 2013., Material and Methods: The data necessary to calculate quality indicators were obtained from the SISCOLO, a Brazilian health system tool. Joinpoint analysis was used to calculate the annual percentage change., Results: We observed important trends showing decreased rates of low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL) and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) and an increased rate of rejected exams from 2009 to 2013. The index of positivity was maintained at levels below those indicated by international standards; very low frequencies of unsatisfactory cases were observed over the study period, which partially contradicts the low rate of positive cases. The number of positive cytological diagnoses was below that expected, considering that developed countries with low frequencies of cervical cancer detect more lesions annually., Conclusions: The evolution of indicators from 2006 to 2013 suggests that actions must be taken to improve the effectiveness of cervical cancer control in Brazil.

CD80 and CD86 are closely linked genes on chromosome 3 that code for glycoproteins of the immunoglobulin superfamily, expressed on the surface of antigen-presenting cells. These costimulatory molecules play essential roles for stimulation and inhibition of T cells through binding to CD28 and CTLA-4 receptors. In this study, CD80 promoter and CD86 exon 8 polymorphisms were analyzed to investigate the genetic diversity and microevolution of the 2 genes. We genotyped 1,124 individuals, including Brazilians of predominantly European, mixed African and European, and Japanese ancestry, 5 Amerindian populations, and an African sample. All variants were observed in Africans, which suggests their origin in Africa before the human migrations out of that continent. Five new CD80 promoter alleles were identified and confirmed by cloning and sequencing, and promoter 2 is most likely the ancestral allele. Nucleotide -79 is monomorphic in 4 Amerindian populations, where the presence of the -79 G allele is probably the result of gene flow from non-Amerindians., (Copyright © 2012 American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics. Objective: To assess the efficacy of the MGuard(TM) stent combining a polymer-mesh sleeve attached to the external surface of a bare-metal stent in preventing distal embolization during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)., Background: Distal embolization of thrombus/platelet aggregates is associated with worse immediate and long-term prognosis after PCI. Treatment of saphenous vein graft (SVG) and PCI in the setting of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) is often related to this complication. Although protection and aspiration devices have been shown to reduce distal embolization, they add time and cost to PCI., Methods: A total of 30 patients were included. Inclusion criteria were de novo lesions in SVG or native vessels with angiographic evidence of instability with potential to provoke flow disturbances and/or distal embolization. Primary endpoint included the incidence of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) (composite of cardiac death, non-fatal myocardial infarction and TLR) up to 30 days of the procedure and TIMI flow right after the PCI., Results: Mean population age was 60.8 years with 36.7% of diabetes. Overall, 53.3% presented with ACS, and most lesions were located in SVG (16 of 30). The majority of lesions had complex morphology including the presence of thrombus (30%) and ulcer (33.3%). The MGuard stent was successfully deployed in all cases with no angiographic/clinical complications including distal embolization. Final TIMI-3/blush-3 were achieved in all cases with no MACE up to 30 days of the procedure., Conclusions: In this preliminary evaluation, the MGuard device demonstrated excellent performance in a highly complex lesion subset, including absence of angiographic/procedural complications, and no adverse events up to 30-day FU., ((c) 2010 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)

Objectives: Our aim was to access the incidence of late major adverse cardiac events (MACE) and stent thrombosis (ST) in nonselected, complex patients followed for a period >/=4 years., Background: Despite the efficacy of drug-eluting stents (DES) in reducing repeated target lesion revascularization, concerns regarding the occurrence of late and very late ST have partially obscured the benefits of this novel technology., Methods: All consecutive patients treated solely with DES between May 2002 and January 2005 were enrolled into this prospective, nonrandomized, single-center registry. The primary end point was long-term occurrence of MACE up to 7 years. Independent predictors of MACE, cardiac death, target lesion revascularization, and ST were obtained by a multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression model., Results: A total of 1,010 patients were enrolled. Most of them were men (77%) with a mean age of 63.7 years. Stent/patient rate was 1.4. Patients were kept in dual antiplatelet therapy for 3 and 6 months after Cypher (Cordis, Johnson & Johnson, Miami Lakes, Florida) and Taxus (Boston Scientific Corp., Natick, Massachusetts) stent implantation, respectively. Follow-up was obtained in 98.2% of the cohort (median 5.01 years). Survival free of MACE and cumulative incidence of definite/probable ST were 84.6% and 1.7%, respectively. Independent predictors of ST were percutaneous coronary intervention in the setting of acute myocardial infarction, DES overlapping, treatment of multivessel disease, presence of moderate-to-severe calcification at lesion site, and in-stent residual stenosis., Conclusions: The deployment of DES in complex, real-world patients resulted in a low rate of very long-term MACE and ST.
