Denture stomatitis, a common disorder affecting denture wearers, is characterized as inflammation and erythema of the oral mucosal areas covered by the denture. Despite its commonality, the etiology of denture stomatitis is not completely understood. A search of the literature was conducted in the PubMed electronic database (through November 2009) to identify relevant articles for inclusion in a review updating information on the epidemiology and etiology of denture stomatitis and the potential role of denture materials in this disorder. Epidemiological studies report prevalence of denture stomatitis among denture wearers to range from 15% to over 70%. Studies have been conducted among various population samples, and this appears to influence prevalence rates. In general, where reported, incidence of denture stomatitis is higher among elderly denture users and among women. Etiological factors include poor denture hygiene, continual and nighttime wearing of removable dentures, accumulation of denture plaque, and bacterial and yeast contamination of denture surface. In addition, poor-fitting dentures can increase mucosal trauma. All of these factors appear to increase the ability of Candida albicans to colonize both the denture and oral mucosal surfaces, where it acts as an opportunistic pathogen. Antifungal treatment can eradicate C. albicans contamination and relieve stomatitis symptoms, but unless dentures are decontaminated and their cleanliness maintained, stomatitis will recur when antifungal therapy is discontinued. New developments related to denture materials are focusing on means to reduce development of adherent biofilms. These may have value in reducing bacterial and yeast colonization, and could lead to reductions in denture stomatitis with appropriate denture hygiene., (© 2011 by The American College of Prosthodontists.)

Background: Traumatic dental injury (TDI) could have physical and psychosocial consequences for children. Thus, it is important to measure the impact of TDI on the quality of life of children (QoL). The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between treated/untreated TDI and the impact on the quality of life of 11-to-14-year-old Brazilian schoolchildren., Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out involving 1612 male and female schoolchildren aged 11 to 14 years attending public and private elementary schools in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. A multi-stage sampling technique was adopted to select the children. Three calibrated examiners used the Andreasen classification for the diagnosis of TDI. Oral health-related quality of life was assessed using the Brazilian version of the Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ11-14) - Impact Short Form (ISF:16), composed of 16 items and self-administered by all children. Other oral conditions (dental caries and malocclusion) and the Social Vulnerability Index were determined and used as controlling variables., Results: Two hundred nineteen children were diagnosed with untreated TDI and 64 were diagnosed with treated TDI. There were no statistically significant associations between untreated or treated TDI and overall CPQ11-14 (Fisher = 0.368 and Fisher = 0.610, respectively). Children with an untreated TDI were 1.4-fold (95% CI = 1.1-2.1) more likely to report impact on the item "avoided smiling/laughing" than those without TDI, whereas children with a treated TDI were twofold (95% CI = 1.1-3.5) more likely to report impact on the item "other children asked questions" than those without TDI., Conclusions: Neither treated nor untreated TDI was associated with oral symptoms, functional limitations or emotional wellbeing. However, children with a TDI in the anterior teeth experienced a negative impact on social wellbeing, mainly with regard to avoiding smiling or laughing and being concerned about what other people may think or say.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and need for treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in students living in Bauru, Brazil. The role of occlusal and emotional factors was also addressed. The presence and severity of TMD was determined by using a self-reported anamnestic questionnaire composed of 10 questions regarding common TMD symptoms. The symptoms were transposed into a severity classification according to the number and frequency of positive responses. Occlusal evaluation included an analysis of retruded contact position, intercuspal position, anterolateral guidance, and nonworking side contacts during mandibular movements. Palpation of the muscles and temporomandibular joints were performed to detect clinical signs of TMD. A chi square test was used to compare clinical and occlusal data with the presence and severity of TMD. A total of 0.65% of the subjects had severe TMD symptoms, 5.81% had moderate symptoms, and 34.84% had mild symptoms. Those with severe and moderate symptom levels were interpreted to be in need of treatment. Symptoms were found significantly more frequently in females than in males (P < .01). Self-reported emotional tension and parafunctional habits demonstrated strong associations with TMD (P < .01). Occlusion did not seem to influence the presence or severity of TMD. Based on these results, the efficacy of some traditional TMD treatments should be reconsidered, and reversible and conservative procedures should be the first choice for managing TMD patients.
