From 2015 to 2016, an epidemic of births of children with Congenital Zika Virus Syndrome emerged in Brazil, and the state of Bahia concentrated the highest incidence of cases. The official health guidelines recommended that the affected children and their families should be supported by interdisciplinary teams of early intervention. This paper aims to deepen the comprehension of regulation and affective-semiotic mediation processes involved in the early intervention with children with Congenital Zika Virus Syndrome and their families. It focus on the experiences of a professional interviewed in a public health service in Salvador, Bahia – Brazil, through narrative analysis and the theoretical-methodological foundations of Cultural Psychology of the Semiotic Dynamics. These approaches allowed the understanding of the processes of construction of meanings, symbolic action and affective-semiotic regulation. The care of Congenital Zika Virus Syndrome children by professionals relates to disquieting experiences, inter subjectivity, meaning construction, affections and symbolic actions. These dynamic processes allowed the professional to better adapt to regulation and affective-semiotic mediation, as well as her own performance in face of children and their families. This analysis emphasizes the reflections of health care practices and their repercussions in the quality of the assistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Brazilian psychological assessment possesses several indicators that prove its quality, although by the early 1990s, the use of psychological tests in evaluative processes had fallen into disrepute in society. The present article recounts the history of Brazilian psychological assessment, told through the lens of the creation of a working group (WG) of the Associação Nacional de Pesquisa e Pós-graduação em Psicologia (ANPEPP, National Association for Research and Graduate Studies in Psychology) and its subsequent achievements. The construction of the Sistema de Avaliação dos Testes Psicológicos (SATEPSI, Psychological Testing Assessment System) and its deployment, collectively, by the profession's regulating agency with the collaboration of scientific associations as well as of the WG and ANPEPP are also mentioned. Many initiatives were reunited, rehabilitating the credibility of the practice of assessment. The authors stress the advances that still need to be made, such as widening research with minority groups and including new statistical analyses and technologies that will impact the development of psychological assessment. The pandemic has affected people's mental health and university students are considered one of the most vulnerable groups, encouraging the development of psychological interventions that can minimize the suffering and illness of this public. Among the possibilities of intervention, virtual clinical listening groups were created which, during the period of social isolation, had the purpose of opening up a listening space for university students suffering from emotional distress. The focus of the group meetings was how university students were experiencing the pandemic, as well as the consequences of this experience. In this article, we discuss virtual clinical listening groups as a form of psychological intervention in the mental health care of university students during the COVID-19 pandemic at a university in northeastern Brazil. This is a qualitative study that began with 274 university students and 5 psychologists who facilitated the listening groups. We used as instruments the registration forms, the participation records of the virtual clinical listening groups and the field diaries written by the facilitators after each meeting. We described in the results the collected data and, from the field diaries, the themes that emerged in the various meetings were listed and analyzed in dialogue with the literature. At the end of the psychological screening process, 117 students participated in the 17 organized groups, with an average of 8 university students per group. Among the main motivations for participating in virtual clinical listening groups, we highlight: the desire to share experiences, a search for control of anxiety, depression and stress, care for mental health, a willingness to promote listening to psychological support for themselves and for others, and self-knowledge. We discuss the nuances in the process of forming the listening groups and the characteristics of the participants, as well as a central element of the group process, which is the establishment of bonds and mutual help among the participants. Feeling vulnerable and the fear of contamination is an element of suffering and, above all, of stress experienced by university students. The group presented itself as an alternative of mutual care in the pandemic context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AUTISM spectrum disorders , *AUTISTIC children , *INTERPERSONAL relations , *DEVELOPMENTAL psychology , *PHILOSOPHY of language , *CULTURAL values , *HEALTH literacy - Abstract
This qualitative research involves the Documental Analysis of Didactic Collections intended for the literacy of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, produced between 2015-2018, a period subsequent to the establishment of a mandatory Law requiring the inclusion of autistic children in the Regular Education System, in all school levels (BRASIL, 2012; 2014). The problem-solving questions that generated the Document Analysis were: What was the epistemological contribution used in these Collections to guide the literacy processes? Would it be linked to the formal logic of the Traditional Pedagogy? Or was it centered on the dialectical logic of the Historical-Cultural Pedagogy and Historical-Critical Pedagogy? The results confirmed the initial hypothesis of the formal logic exclusive use of Traditional Pedagogy and enabled the accomplishment of the final goal of the proposition of epistemological reviews of these Collections, aiming a reflexive educational training of autistics, from their intra and inter personal relations, valued by the Psychology of Cultural Development and by the Materialist Philosophy of Language. SOCCER fields , *CHILD labor , *DEVELOPMENTAL psychology , *ATHLETE training , *PROFESSIONAL athletes , *CHILD athletes , *SOCCER fans - Abstract
The present article aims to analyze child and youth labor in soccer, proposing a normative regulation, due to the possibility of risks to the physical and mental integrity of this population, in light of the Principle of Integral Protection, enshrined by the Constitution of the Federative Republic of Brazil (CRFB/88) and by international treaties, and that recognized to this population segment the condition of subject of rights. As a research methodology, the deductive method was chosen, through eminently bibliographical consultation, and study of the case of the players of Flamengo Regatta Club, victimized in 2019, as a method of procedure. Moreover, as the training of professional athletes in the soccer field is a reality in our country, reaching children and adolescents, and as such, it can be characterized as precocious work, depending on the conditions, the text aims to answer the research problem concerning whether child and youth work in soccer, considering its potential damage to physical and psychological development, is properly regulated in Brazil. The conclusion is that there is insufficient legislation related to the protection of the interests of this group regarding the activities developed in the context of soccer, which ends up denoting a disregard for the peculiar condition of a person in the process of development. - Abstract
Adolescents working in the Brazilian rural contexts were investigated through participant observation and interviews, aiming at understanding the role played by work in the nurturing of adolescent in these contexts. The qualitative and longitudinal survey involved six participants who were members of two different families, as follows: four female adolescents, one adult woman, and one adult man. It was found that adolescents and their families understood work as a context for nurturing moral values, learning skills, and meeting needs. Observation, however, found that work also involved exposure to risks. The study reviews the role of work in adolescence as a cultural component in some rural contexts and how this should be taken into account to avoid an ethnocentric and universalistic interpretation that divides adolescence between "normal" and "abnormal.", (© 2023 Society for Research on Adolescence.)

HIGHER education & state , *DEVELOPMENTAL psychology , *UNDERGRADUATE programs , *LATIN American history , *HISTORY of psychology - Abstract
Recently, History of Psychology in Latin American has been focusing on the mechanisms of institutionalization of Psychology and, in this scenario, the history of undergraduate programs has been a recurrent object. Considering Brazil, such research focuses on specific institutions located, mainly, in the South and Southeast regions of the country. Thus, research in Regional History has become urgent, i.e., that considers the development of Psychology in other locations of the country. This study describes and analyzes social demands for the establishment of the undergraduate program of Psychology at the Faculdade Dom Aquino de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras/Faculdades Unidades Católicas de Mato Grosso (FADAFI/FUCMT), in 1975. In addition to this, it reflects upon its curriculum. This was the second undergraduate program of Psychology from the state of Mato Grosso and the only one in Campo Grande until 1999. To achieve its main goal, this study highlights the timeframe of training of the first class (1974-1980) and it uses primary textual and oral sources. The interpretation of these sources connected to the contextual aspects of Mato Grosso at the time, suggests the Missão Salesiana de Mato Grosso (MSMT) as an important vector of the development of Higher Education in the state. In addition to this, it was observed a close relationship between the creation of the undergraduate course investigated and the scenario of modernization promoted in the second and third quartiles of the 20th century, in the country. Finally, it is seen that this program was established idiosyncratically, serving a majority of women, remembered as mature and politicized. Thus, despite the methodological constraints of the study, its results help in an extended understanding of the history of Psychology in Brazil. They also make possible a better understanding of the relationship between Church and State in relation to the establishment of Psychology undergraduate programs in the country. Objective: To describe the service use profile of Child and Adolescent Psychosocial Care Centers (Centro de Atenção Psicossocial Infanto-Juvenil [CAPSi]) in Brazil regarding diagnostic categories, sociodemographic aspects, and care modalities between 2008 and 2012. Methods: A descriptive, ecological study was performed using data from the Unified Health System regarding high-complexity procedure authorizations (Autorização de Procedimentos de Alta Complexidade [APAC]) for the period from 2008-2012. The variables sex, age, diagnosis (F00-F99 of ICD-10), and type of care provided were examined. The data were processed using TabWin and STATA version 12. Results: A total of 837,068 records were examined, each representing one visit to CAPSi. Most visits were by male users (68.8%). The most common diagnoses were hyperkinetic disorders (13%), pervasive developmental disorders (12.4%), and conduct disorders (8.4%). Conclusions: Behavioral and emotional disorders that usually appear during childhood or adolescence and psychological development disorders were frequent, with more than 50% of the latter comprising autism spectrum disorders. Regional differences were observed, with a higher presence of this diagnosis in the Southeast, while the North and Northeast had a high percentage of visits due to mental retardation. SCHOOL children , *DEVELOPMENTAL psychology , *CARTOGRAPHY , *CHILDREN , *TWENTIETH century - Abstract
This text tells about maps, children and schools from who lived them. Professors, who were part of my interviews, contributed in some way to the formation of the Cartography for School children field in Brazil. Cartography for Children is a research field that arises at the interface between Education and Geography, from the earliest discussions done by the Geography and Cartography School group in the mid-90s of the twentieth century. This research group is coordinated by the teachers Rosângela Doin de Almeida (UNESP-Rio Claro) and Regina Araújo Almeida (USP / SP) and brings together leading researchers from the Scholar Cartography field. The history of the group is mixed with the events organized by it, as the Colloquium of Cartography for Children. So far there have been 7 Cartography events for schoolchildren in Brazil. The objective of this research was to understand the movements and cartographic practices that tangles are found in the narratives of my interviewees and in the Proceedings of seminars, symposium and Cartography forums for Children. We found that the field of Cartography for Children suffers influences from various areas of knowledge, especially the development of philosophy and psychology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study aims to seek concurrent validity evidence on the use of Pfister Colored Pyramids Test (CPT) in psychological children's evaluation from different developmental levels. 197 children from Fortaleza, Brazil participated, being 54% female, aged 6 to 11 and 6 months (M = 8,56, SD = 1,47). The ANOVA test was used comparing the CPT performance of three age groups (6-7, 8-9, and 10-11 years old). The incidence of variables related to lower emotional or cognitive development and difficulty in elaborating received stimulation (pure carpet, carpet with onset of order, and affective excitation syndrome) were significantly increased in younger children, while older children had an increase, in the associated indicator to the maturation in treatment of emotions and defensive maneuvers (Layer formation), corresponding to the one expected according to theories of development. The study corroborated to other researches that involved validity evidence to use TPC with children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BREAST milk , *HEALTH risk assessment , *POISONS , *POLLUTANTS , *BREASTFEEDING , *DEVELOPMENTAL psychology , *FOOD quality - Abstract
Human milk has an important role in infants' psychological and immunological development. In addition to providing vital substances, some environmental contaminants, such as potentially toxic elements (PTEs), can be transmitted by human breast milk to infants. However, some studies monitored PTEs concentration in human breast milk; no metanalysis was conducted to estimate the concentration of PTEs in human breast milk. Therefore, this review aimed to determine PTEs concentrations in human breast milk and consumption-related health effects worldwide via meta-analysis and health risk assessment. After searching among Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed databases, 32 studies were included in this work. Based on the results, the rank order of PTEs was Fe (258.44 µg/kg) > Zn (205.16 µg/kg) > Cu (32.29 µg/kg) > Mn (4.30 µg/kg) > Cr (2.62 µg/kg) > Hg (0.44 µg/kg) > As (0.21 µg/kg) > Cd (0.16 µg/kg) > Pb (0.03 µg/kg). Moreover, Egypt, Pakistan, Brazil, Jordan, and Turkey for non-carcinogenic risk (n-CR) and Egypt, Jordan, Brazil, and Romania for carcinogenic risk (CR) have shown unsafe levels, respectively. Since the lactating mothers' diet can directly affect their milk's content, monitoring the feeding behavior (especially supplements taken during pregnancy) and the quality of foods is recommended. • Thirty-two studies with 181 data-reports were included our meta-analysis. • The rank order of PTEs in human milk was Fe > Zn > Cu > Mn > Cr > Hg > As > Cd > Pb. • Egypt, Pakistan, Brazil, Jordan, and Turkey for n-CR have shown unsafe levels. • Egypt, Jordan, Brazil, and Romania for CR have shown unsafe levels. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) is internationally accepted as a key tool for the assessment of childhood abuse and neglect experiences. However, there are relative few psychometric studies available and some authors have proposed two different factor solutions. We examined the dimensional structure and internal consistency of the Brazilian version of the CTQ. A total of 1,925 participants from eight different clinical and non-clinical samples including adolescents, adults and elders were considered in this study. First, we performed Confirmatory Factor Analysis to investigate the goodness of fit of the two proposed competitive factor structure models for the CTQ. We also investigated the internal consistency of all factors. Second, multi-group analyses were used to investigate measurement invariance and population heterogeneity across age groups and sex. Our findings revealed that the alternative factor structure as opposed to the original factor structure was the most appropriate model within adolescents and adults Brazilian samples. We provide further evidence for the validity and reliability of the CTQ within the Brazilian samples and report that the alternative model showed an improvement in fit indexes and may be a better alternative over the original model. We compared Future Discounting ( FD, preference for smaller, sooner rewards over larger, later ones) by 160 Brazilian youth (16-30 years old; 71 women and 89 men). University students and slum-dwelling (favela) youth were compared. Participants completed a monetary FD task, a scale of youngsters′ view of their neighborhood, and self-reported exposure to violence ( EV). Favela youth discounted the future more than students; favela men more than women. However, university women discounted more than men, an unexpected result. Predicted differences in the participants′ view of their neighborhood between the two groups were observed. The interaction context × EV scores was a significant predictor of FD. These youth have apparently adjusted trade-offs between the short and long term in a context-sensitive, adaptive manner. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In late modern societies, the normative regulation of life courses in the transition to adulthood has become more lenient, delaying the fulfillment of adult roles up to the end of the third decade of life, and thus creating the conditions for more flexible and private life trajectories. The transformations occurred in post-industrial societies lead to the emergence of new concepts and theories in the realm of Developmental Psychology, from which we selected the theory of emerging adulthood for further exploration and discussion. In this article, the importance and utility of emerging adulthood as a new developmental period is discussed, considering the dynamic interactions between personal agency and the macro-structures that allow a better understanding of young people's status in post-modern societies. The characteristics of this theory are also explored in the light of Portuguese society, since emerging adulthood is mainly experienced inside the parental home, as family is the main source of support in an increasingly precarious environment. Finally, a comparison between the Portuguese and Brazilian reality is established, discussing the similarities and differences between both countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The Career Adapt-Abilities Scale—Brazilian Form (CAASBrazil) consists of four scales which measure concern, control, curiosity, and confidence as psychosocial resources for managing occupational transitions, developmental tasks, and work traumas. Internal consistency estimates for the subscale and total scores ranged from good to excellent. The factor structure was quite similar to the one computed for combined data from 13 countries. CAASBrazil is similar to the International Form, with the exception of two items that were not included in Brazilian version. Concurrent validity evidence was collected relative to personality factors from the Five-Factor Model of Personality. The relationships between career adaptability and personality factors were as predicted. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The aim of this study was to assess the skeletal age of Brazilian individuals with Down syndrome (DS) using the method of Greulich and Pyle. Forty subjects with DS between the ages of 6 and 16 years were studied and compared to a control sample of children without DS. The statistical analysis showed that at the age of 7 years the skeletal age (SA) of the individuals with DS was delayed in relation to their chronological age (CA) (SA < CA). On the other hand, at the age of 15 years, their SA was advanced in relation to their CA (SA > CA). An evaluation of the results suggests that the period of adolescent development for individuals with DS was shorter. These individuals reach the completion of bone maturation earlier compared to individuals without DS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Like many cities in developing countries, São Paulo, Brazil, is characterized by major intra-urban inequalities with respect to human development. The center-periphery spatial regimes are the most obvious spatial manifestation of this phenomenon. In this paper we apply confirmatory spatial data analysis to examine these inequalities and their relationship to public interventions. Using district-level data, we examine the relationship between public interventions and the level of human development, while controlling for population density, spatial heterogeneity and spatial autocorrelation. Our results suggest that public interventions reinforce the existing differences between center and periphery. Specifically, public services and utilities and social programs are allocated more intensively in districts with higher human development levels. These findings call for a more careful consideration of distribution of societal resources and effectiveness of public programs and policies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To identify predictors of intellectual development in a cohort of children with permanent primary congenital hypothyroidism. Cohort study with intellectual development as the outcome. Thirty-one consecutive newborns with permanent primary congenital hypothyroidism diagnosed by a screening programme were recruited from the outpatient clinic of a district hospital and underwent psychometric evaluation with the Wechsler Intelligence Scales after a minimum follow-up of 4 years. Eight of the 31 patients (25·8%) presented impaired intellectual development (full-scale intellectual quotient < 85), and one of them presented mental deficiency (full-scale intellectual quotient ≤ 69). The following were associated with worse prognosis: initial serum T4 levels ≤ 32·18 nmol/l, treatment beginning after 30 days of age, fewer than seven clinic visits during the first year of life, living in rural areas, nonintellectual parental occupation and little parental schooling. In a multiple regression analysis, only maternal schooling (B = 0·401; β coefficient = 13·053, P = 0·063), number of clinic visits during the first year of life (B = 0·382; β coefficient = 4·145, P = 0·047) and initial serum T4 (B = 0·287; β coefficient = 1·336, P = 0·089) remained significantly associated with full-scale intelligence quotient scores. Maternal schooling, number of visits during the first year of life and baseline T4 levels were the main predictors of cognitive outcome in this cohort of patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
