This study aimed to analyze the risk factors associated with diabetes mellitus (DM) among Brazilian adults. Cross-sectional study. Data of 75,860 Brazilian adults (≥18 years) were collected using the Surveillance System for Risk and Protective Factors for Chronic Diseases by Telephone Survey (Vigitel) (2020–2023). Variables assessed included self-reported medical diagnosis of DM, sociodemographic factors (sex, age, schooling, marital status) and DM risk factors (regular consumption of sweetened beverages (≥5 times/week), infrequent consumption of fruits and vegetables, and beans (<5 times/week), insufficient physical activity, prolonged screen time on cell phones, computers, tablets (CCT), and television (TV), smoking, heavy episodic drinking, excess weight, and obesity). Logistic regression models estimated crude and adjusted odds ratio (aOR) (adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics) for the association between the risk factors and the presence of DM. The overall prevalence of self-reported DM in the population was 9.2%. There was a lower chance of regular consumption of sweetened beverages (aOR 0.79; 95% CI: 0.65–0.97) and heavy episodic drinking (aOR 0.77; 95% CI: 0.65–0.93) and a greater chance of insufficient physical activity (aOR 1.40; 95% CI: 1.25–1.55), prolonged TV screen time (aOR 1.22; 95% CI: 1.09–1.36), excess weight (aOR 1.62; 95% CI: 1.44–1.82) and obesity (aOR 1.87; 95% CI: 1.67–2.10) among individuals with DM. There was a lower chance of regular consumption of sweetened beverages and heavy episodic drinking among individuals with DM and a greater chance of insufficient physical activity, prolonged TV screen time, excess weight, and obesity, among that. Type 2 diabetes (T2DM), hypertension, and obesity are major contributors to global mortality. This study aimed to evaluate eating behavior and dietary practices among individuals with T2DM and/or hypertension, examining their associations with sociodemographic and anthropometric characteristics. We hypothesized that these factors may contribute to body mass index (BMI) and body fat (BF) levels in these individuals. In a cross-sectional study, adults/older individuals diagnosed with T2DM and/or hypertension were included. Eating behavior was evaluated via Three-factor Eating Questionnaire-R21. Dietary practices were assessed using the Dietary Guidelines for the Brazilian Population (DGBP) questionnaire. Poisson regression examined associations between eating behaviors, dietary practices, and sociodemographic factors. Linear regressions were employed to analyze relationships between eating behavior, dietary practices, BMI, and BF. The study included 275 primarily female (70.5%) participants under 60 years old (54.2%). Male and older participants had a lower prevalence of high scores in the 'emotional eating' (EE; PR: 0.40 [0.25;0.63]) and 'uncontrolled eating' (UE; PR: 0.68 [0.50;0.92]) domains. In contrast, older patients had a higher prevalence of adherence to the DGBP recommendations (PR:1.53 [1.20;1.94]). A positive association was observed between high EE (β:3.71 [1.98;5.44]) and UE (β:2.85 [1.15;4.55]) scores and BMI, whereas higher dietary practice scores (β:-2.19 [-3.88;-0.50]) were negatively associated with BMI. High EE (β:2.20 [0.38;4.02]) and UE (β:1.92 [0.17;3.67]) scores were positively associated with BF regardless of the confounding factors included. Higher scores on the dietary practices were inversely associated with BF (β:-1.94 [-3.67;-0.21]). Understanding dietary behaviors and practices can facilitate a more comprehensive and effective treatment approach. In a cross-sectional study of adults with type 2 diabetes and/or hypertension, males and older participants had a lower prevalence of high scores in EE and UE domains. Conversely, older patients had a higher prevalence of adherence to the DGBP. High EE and UE scores correlated positively with BMI, while higher dietary practices were negatively associated with BMI. The aim of this study was to analyse the spatial patterns and factors associated with the incidence of tuberculosis-diabetes (TB-DM) in Brazil, from 2001 to 2019. Ecological study. Brazilian municipalities were used as the units of analysis. The local empirical Bayesian rate and the spatial autocorrelation test were calculated. Moran and Getis-Ord Gi∗ were used to identify spatial clusters, and spatially weighted regression was conducted. In total, 75,021 new cases of TB associated with DM were reported in Brazil during the study period. Most Brazilian municipalities had an average TB-DM incidence of 1.0–2.0/100,000 inhabitants. The regression showed that the Gini index (β = 0.85) and family health strategy coverage (β = −0.26) were the two indicators that had the most influence on TB-DM incidence in Brazil. Racial disparity in physical activity in people with diabetes in Brazil remains scarcely investigated. We examined the association between physical activity and diabetes-related complications according to race in the Brazilian population. Cross-sectional. We analyzed data from the 2019 National Health Survey, a population-based survey of Brazilian adults. We used a self-reported questionnaire to assess physical activity during commuting, leisure-time, domestic, and occupational activities. Diabetes-related complications included vision, kidney, and circulatory impairment, foot ulcers, diabetic coma, and all-cause complications. We used robust Poisson regression models with restricted cubic splines to examine the association between physical activity and diabetes-related complications. We included 2529 adults with diabetes (48.9% women; mean age: 53.5 ± 11.9 years). One-third experienced diabetes-related complications. Black adults performed less leisure-time and more occupational and commuting physical activity than White participants. Black participants showed a higher probability of all-cause (1.61; 95%CI: 1.29, 2.02) and vision complications (1.58; 95%CI: 1.23, 2.04) compared to White participants independent of physical activity status. Only leisure-time physical activity was associated with a reduced probability of all-cause complications (PR: 0.78; 0.71, 0.86) whereas commuting and occupational physical activity were not associated with any diabetes-related complications. Physically inactive, Brown adults showed a higher probability of kidney, circulatory, vision, and all-cause complications than active, White adults. However, physical activity attenuated the probability of these complications in Brown participants. The association between physical activity and diabetes-related complications is domain-specific. Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that can cause psychological stress. This study was conducted to perform the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the QSD-R for diabetic patients into Portuguese (Brazil). Methods: This study was a cross-cultural adaptation process carried out in a public university in São Paulo, Brazil, in three stages: translation and backtranslation by two native-speaking independent professionals, analysis by a committee of specialists, and a pre-test phase. Results: The final version was created by seven experts after making semantic, idiomatic, and cultural changes to eighteen items. The results indicated a satisfactory content validation index (CVI ≥ 0.80). This version was applied to 30 patients. No item was excluded from the instrument. Conclusion: The translated version of the QSD-R was considered adequate and culturally adapted for use in Brazil to enable the psychometric validation of the instrument. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The objective of this study was to examine the hypothesis that periodontal disease is associated with chronic non-communicable diseases. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated the periodontal health condition of the population, based on the community periodontal index, as well as the number of missing teeth and the presence of systemic health conditions. We quantified the association between oral health and the presence of chronic diseases using simple logistic regression, adjusting for confounding factors including age, smoking, and overweight. Results: The study population consisted of 334 volunteers, aged between 19 and 81 years. In patients over 45 years old, periodontal disease was found to be significantly associated with hypertension and diabetes. Furthermore, in female patients, periodontal disease was significantly associated with hypertension, diabetes, and cancer. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that periodontal disease is positively and significantly associated with both arterial hypertension and diabetes, independent of potential confounding factors. Food addiction (FA) has been widely investigated. For the first time, two studies reported its association with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) in the general population and populations with mental disorders and undergoing bariatric surgery. However, the relationship between FA and DM2 needs to be better explored in different social contexts and population groups. Given this, the present study aims to evaluate whether DM2 diagnosis is associated with FA diagnosis in women living in poverty. This is a cross-sectional, population-based study conducted in a Brazilian capital city. FA was assessed by the modified Yale Food Addiction Scale (mYFAS) 2.0, and DM2 diagnosis was assessed by self-reporting of previous medical diagnosis. The association was assessed by multivariable Poisson regression with robust variance estimation adjusted for age, poverty situation, race/skin colour, physical activity and BMI. A total of 1878 women were included, of whom 15·1 % had FA and 3·2 % had a medical diagnosis of DM2. In the multivariable analysis, the medical diagnosis of DM2 was associated with FA (prevalence ratio, PR: 2·18; 95 % CI (1·26, 3·76)). The DM2 diagnosis was also identified to be associated with role interference (PR: 1·93; 95 % CI (1·01, 3·67)) symptom of FA. In conclusion, a positive association between FA and DM2 in women living in poverty was observed, information that adds to the current evidence already available in the literature, pointing to a new line of research and integrated care. Background: The capillary blood glucose monitoring program at home a challenge in primary health care. Therefore, it is fundamental to identify the glycemic control of people with diabetes mellitus through HBA1c and to analyze its associated factors. Objective: To identify the glycemic profile of people with Diabetes Mellitus (DM) through HbA1c and analyze factors associated. Materials & methods: Cross-sectional study developed in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brazil. Secondary data from the electronic health record of people registered in the Primary Health Care system were used. A sample of 3181 participants was obtained. People with HbA1c < 7.0% (53 mmol/mol) were considered to have adequate glycemic control. For people aged ≥ 55 years, a less stringent target, < 8.0% (64 mmol/mol), was also considered. The odds ratio was the measure of effect analyzed with their respective 95% Confidence Intervals (95% CI). Results: Adequate glycemic control with HbA1c < 7.0% (53 mmol/mol) was found in 44.8% of people and, when using the less rigid target, HbA1c < 8.0% (64 mmol/mol) for people aged ≥ 55 years-old, 70.6% had adequate glycemic control. Age and drug therapy were associated with adequate glycemic control (p < 0.001), which was more frequent among older people and those who used only metformin. Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a heterogeneous metabolic disorder, characterized by hyperglycemia. It is a vast disease, involving different classifications, signs, symptoms, and treatment approaches, especially pharmacological. With digital technologies, social media, and the Internet have become disseminating agents of health information, which is often incomplete and incorrect. This study aimed to evaluate the information about pharmacological treatments for DM on Brazilian publications' Instagram social media platforms. Data from around 300 publications were collected for this study, which was conducted between 2021 and 2022. The characteristics, engagement, and quality of the information were analyzed using the Discern Questionnaire tool. Content evaluation was applied to categories not included in the quality tool. The type of information presented was classified as information disorder. Data were described using descriptive statistics, and inter-examiner agreement was calculated using the kappa coefficient. It was observed that the profiles publishing the information had an average of 6,263.3 followers. Type 2 DM was mentioned in 46.3% of the publications, and the most cited drugs were metformin (10.3%) and NPH insulin (7%). The quality of the information was classified as very poor in 68.8% of the publications. Regarding analysis of the content and type of information, indication, forms of administration, and non-pharmacological treatment presented misinformation and/or disinformation. It is, therefore, important to reinforce digital literacy, so that people can discern the content they are absorbing. Likewise, public policies aimed at regulating the content circulating in the media, are fundamental tools to ensure better information about DM through the Internet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To estimate the prevalence of Readiness for enhanced health literacy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus through the diagnostic accuracy of the defining characteristics. Methods: A diagnostic accuracy study on the diagnosis of Readiness for enhanced health literacy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus was conducted using the latent class analysis model. The sample comprised 180 individuals attending a referral outpatient clinic in Maranhão, Brazil. The data analysis was conducted in the R Core Team software. Findings: The prevalence of the nursing diagnosis was 55.23%. The main defining characteristics were expresses desire to enhance health communication with healthcare providers and expresses desire to enhance the understanding of health information to make healthcare choices. All defining characteristics showed significant specificity values. Conclusions: Accurate diagnoses contribute to individualized care plans for patients. Implications for nursing practice: The diagnosis Readiness for enhanced health literacy should be considered in implementing care plans, including interventions to reduce complications in the health status of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Objective: To determine whether the systemic diseases diabetes mellitus (DM) and arterial hypertension (AH), and smoking status are associated with apical periodontitis (AP) in a representative rural population. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional study using a representative sample of individuals obtained from a population-based epidemiological survey carried out in the rural area of the city of Rosário do Sul, RS, Brazil, from March 2015 to May 2016. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and clinical examination. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to identify variables independently associated with AP. Results: Of the 584 individuals included in the study, 353 (60.4%) had AP. The presence of AP was independently associated with age ≥ 40 years (odds ratio [OR] = 1.867, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.193–2.923, p = 0.006), non-white ethnicity (OR = 1.509, 95% CI: 1.029–2.115, p = 0.035), active or former smoker (OR = 2.087, 95% CI: 1.241–3.510, p = 0.006) and DM or prediabetes (OR = 1.676, 95% CI: 1.150–2.443, p = 0.007). Conclusion: The study identified significant associations between AP and demographics, smoking status, and systemic disease in a Brazilian rural population. This study aimed to assess the long-term effect of the pandemic on mental health and self-care parameters in patients with diabetes during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. After 18 months of pandemic, 118 participants remained in the study (mean age of 56.6 ± 13.4 years, 66.7% were women). We observed no change in the scores for mental health disorders screening. Regarding self-care, patients with type 1 diabetes showed an improvement in the adherence score compared to those found at the beginning of the pandemic (variation + 3.5 (−6.0 to +15.8) points, p = 0.02), and also compared to those with type 2 diabetes. Although the pandemic have negatively affected many people's mental health, especially in those with chronic diseases, our results show that patients with diabetes may have developed good coping and adaptive strategies to maintain diabetes control and symptom pattern of mental health disorders over the course of the pandemic. Objective: To investigate the association between insulin resistance markers and periodontitis in adolescents, analyzing confounder variables and the adiposity as a mediator. Methods: This is population‐based study is representative of adolescents aged 17–18 years from public schools in São Luís, Brazil (n = 405). Insulin resistance was assessed using the Model of Assessment of the Homeostasis of the Insulin Resistance Index (HOMA‐IR) and its percussor triglycerides/HDL‐cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL‐c). The outcome was Initial Periodontitis, a latent variable estimated by the common variance shared among bleeding on probing, probing depth ≥ 4 mm, and clinical attachment loss ≥ 4 mm. The association between insulin resistance and Initial Periodontitis was modeled via pathways triggered by socioeconomic status, smoking, alcohol, and Adiposity, using structural equation modeling. Results: Higher TG/HDL‐c was directly associated with higher Initial Periodontitis (standardized coefficient [SC] = 0.130, p < 0.001). HOMA‐IR was not associated with periodontal outcome (SC = 0.023, p = 0.075), but it was with Adiposity (SC = 0.495, p < 0.001). Higher TG/HDL‐c was associated with Adiposity (SC = 0.202, p < 0.001). Conclusion: The insulin resistance markers were associated with early signs of periodontal breakdown among adolescents, suggesting a possible relationship between diabetes and periodontitis commences early in life. Background: The Carbohydrate Counting (CC) is directly associated with achieving glycemic control by people with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM). Therefore, this study aims to analyze characteristics of the CC practice associated with the adequacy of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in adults with T1DM in Brazil. Methods: The study was cross-sectional, carried out using an online form with questions about knowledge of CC, clinical, anthropometric, sociodemographic data, follow-up with health professionals and understanding of the concepts of CC. Pearson's chi-square test and binomial logistic regression analysis (p<0.05) were applied. Results: 173 adults participated, of which 57.2% had increased HbA1c (≥7%). Having the diabetes duration <10 years (p=0.006), performing the CC at lunch (p=0.040) and dinner (p=0.018), using specific applications to perform the CC (p=0.001), having learned to perform CC with a nutritionist (p=0.037) and knowing how to correctly define the concepts of food bolus (p=0.001), correction bolus (p<0.001) and insulin/carbohydrate ratio (p<0.001) was associated with having adequate HbA1c (<7%). Participants who were undergoing CC practice were 3.273 times more likely to have adequate HbA1c and participants with diabetes duration <10 years were 2.686 times more likely to have adequate HbA1c. Conclusion: It was concluded that variables transversal to CC favor adequate HbA1c values in adults with T1DM and that practicing CC and having a diabetes duration of less than 10 years are predictive factors of having adequate HbA1c. To describe trends in the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) in Brazil and to analyze its association with the consumption of artificially sweetened beverages among individuals aged 18 years or older. This was a repeated cross-sectional study. Annual data from VIGITEL surveys (2006–2020) were used, which included adults from all Brazilian state capitals. The outcome was the prevalence of DM (type 1 and type 2). The main exposure variable was consuming beverages like soft drinks and artificial juices, either in its 'diet, light, or zero' form. Covariates included sex, age, sociodemographic characteristics, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, fruit consumption, and obesity. The temporal trend in the indicators and the etiological fraction (population attributable risk [PAR]) were calculated. Analyses were performed using Poisson regression. The association between DM and consumption of beverages was tested, excluding the year 2020 due to the pandemic; restricting the analysis to the final three years (2018–2020). Overall, 757,386 subjects were included. The prevalence of DM increased from 5.5% to 8.2%, with an annual growth of 0.17 percentage points (95% CI 0.11–0.24). Among those who consumed diet/light/zero beverages, the annual percentage change of DM was four times greater. The PAR corresponding to the consumption of diet/light/zero beverages on the occurrence of DM was 17%. An increasing prevalence of DM was observed, while diet/light/zero beverages consumption remains stable. A substantial reduction in the annual percentage change of DM could be observed if people stopped consuming diet/light soda/juice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) is a condition resulting from autoimmune destruction of pancreatic β cells, leading patients to require lifelong insulin therapy, which, most often, does not avoid the most common complications of this disease. Transplantation of isolated pancreatic islets from heart-beating organ donors is a promising alternative treatment for T1D, however, this approach is severely limited by the shortage of pancreata maintained under adequate conditions. Methods: In order to analyze whether and how this problem could be overcome, we undertook a retrospective study from January 2007 to January 2010, evaluating the profile of brain-dead human pancreas donors offered to our Cell and Molecular Therapy NUCEL Center (www.usp.br/nucel) and the basis for organ refusal. Results: During this time period, 558 pancreata were offered by the São Paulo State Transplantation Central, 512 of which were refused and 46 were accepted for islet isolation and transplantation. Due to the elevated number of refused organs, we decided to analyze the main reasons for refusal in order to evaluate the possibility of improving the organ acceptance rate. The data indicate that hyperglycemia, technical issues, age, positive serology and hyperamylasemia are the top five main causes for declination of a pancreas offer. Conclusions: This study underlines the main reasons to decline a pancreas offer in Sao Paulo—Brazil and provides some guidance to ameliorate the rate of eligible pancreas donors, aiming at improving the islet isolation and transplantation outcome. Background: Screening for undiagnosed diabetes using glucose testing is recommended globally to allow preventive action among those detected. Our aim was to evaluate the access to glucose testing to screen for diabetes in Brazil using self-reported information on recent testing and medical consultation from national surveys of Brazilian adults. Methods: The Pesquisa Nacional de Saú de (PNS) was conducted in 2013 and 2019 drawing probabilistic samples of Brazilians aged 18 years and above. To evaluate glucose testing among those undiagnosed, we excluded those selfreporting a previous diagnosis of diabetes. We then defined recent access to diabetes diagnosis by considering the previous two years and choosing the last blood glucose test and the proximal medical consultation reported. We used Poisson regression with robust variance to assess correlates of access, expressing them with adjusted prevalence ratios (PR) and their 95% confidence intervals. Results: Access to recent glucose testing documented that over 70% reported a recent glycemic test, 71% in 2013, and 77% in 2019. These findings are consistent with a wide recent access to medical consultation, 86% and 89% in 2013 and 2019, respectively. Reporting recent glucose testing and medical consultation may better reflect the actual access to medical diagnostic testing. When analyzing this joint outcome, diagnostic access was still wide, 67% and 74%, respectively. Greater access (p< 0.001) was seen for women (PR=1.16; 1.15-1.17), older individuals (PR=1.25; 1.22-1.28), and those with higher education (PR=1.17; 1.15-1.18), obesity (PR=1.06; 1.05-1.08), and hypertension (PR=1.12; 1.11-1.13). In contrast, lower access (p<0.001) was seen for those declaring being Black (PR=0.97; 0.95-0.99) or of mixed-race (PR=0.97; 0.96-0.98), those residing in rural areas (PR=0.89; 0.87-0.90), and not having a private health insurance plan (PR=0.85; 0.84-0.86). Conclusions: Although access to diagnostic testing for diabetes is high in Brazil, partly due to its universal health system, social inequities are still present, demanding specific actions, particularly in rural areas and among those selfdeclaring as being Black or mixed-race. Aims: To evaluate the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in Brazilian adults with diabetes mellitus via a systematic review with meta-analysis. Methods: A systematic review using PubMed, EMBASE, and Lilacs was conducted, searching for studies published up to February 2022. Random effect meta-analysis was performed to estimate the DR prevalence. Results: We included 72 studies (n = 29,527 individuals). Among individuals with diabetes in Brazil, DR prevalence was 36.28% (95% CI 32.66–39.97, I2 98%). Diabetic retinopathy prevalence was highest in patients with longer duration of diabetes and in patients from Southern Brazil. Conclusion: This review shows a similar prevalence of DR as compared to other low- and middle-income countries. Background The non-adoption of behavioral changes to control diabetes mellitus contributes to a low adherence to self-care. This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with non-adoption of healthy behaviors among diabetic individuals. Methods Cross-sectional study using data from the National Health Survey (Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde) carried out in 2013 in Brazil, with adults (≥18 years) (n = 3098). The outcome variable was the non-adoption—two or fewer—of healthy behaviors. Logistic regression model was used to identify the factors associated with non-adoption of healthy behaviors. Results Approximately, 50% of the participants adopted two or fewer healthy habits and the most frequently mentioned were not drinking excessively (94.1%) and not smoking (89.1%). Not using diabetic medication (odds ratio (OR) = 1.37, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.02–1.85), not making regular doctor visits (OR = 1.42, 95% CI = 1.08–1.87), no limitation of usual activities (OR = 1.39, 95% CI = 1.01–1.94) and good self-rated health (OR = 1.47, 95% CI = 1.09–1.98) increased the chance of individuals non-adoption of healthy behaviors independently of gender, age, schooling and economic status. Conclusions Health professionals need to be aware of issues, such as diabetic medication use, frequency of doctor visits, limitation of usual activities and good self-rated health, which are factors that can interfere with the adoption of healthy behaviors of diabetic patients. Background: Brazil ranks fifth in the world in the number of adults with diabetes, and third for type 1 diabetes. Conducting educational actions on this topic in public schools in this country is extremely important, since it can assist in the early adoption of good life habits and in a better care for students in this condition. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of an educational intervention about diabetes for students and school staff. Methods: This is an interventional non-randomized longitudinal study, in which interviews were conducted before and after a playful intervention with the use of theater play and games for students and plus a training for the school staff. Results: A total of 89 participants completed the study, being 73 students aged 7 to 12 years old, and 16 school staff. As a result, there was a positive change in knowledge and perception of diabetes by the students. The greatest changes in the answers among the participants, at the post-intervention period, were related to the possibility of consuming something with sugar by those with diabetes, and particularly how to cope in hypoglycemia situations by the school staff. Preeclampsia (PE) affects up to five times more women with pre-existing diabetes mellitus (PDM) than women without it. The present study aimed to identify the effect of the DASH diet on PE incidence (primary outcome) and blood pressure, glycated haemoglobin (GH), serum lipids, glutathione peroxidase (GP), C-reactive protein (CRP – secondary outcomes) in pregnant with PDM. This randomised, controlled, single-blind trial studied sixty-eight pregnant women with PDM throughout prenatal care until delivery (18 weeks) at a public maternity hospital, Brazil. The standard diet group (SDG) received a diet containing 45–65 % carbohydrates, 15–20 % protein and 25–30 % lipids. The DASH diet group (DDG) received the adapted DASH diet with a similar macronutrient distribution, but with a higher concentration of fibres, unsaturated fats, calcium, magnesium and potassium as well as lower saturated fat. Student’s t, Mann–Whitney U and the Chi-square tests were used to compare outcomes. PE incidence was 22⋅9 % in the SDG and 12⋅1 % in the DDG (P = 0⋅25). GP levels significantly increased in the DDG (intra-group analysis; mean difference = 1588 [CI 181, 2994], P = 0⋅03) and tended to be different from the variation in the SDG (mean difference = −29⋅5 [CI −1305; 1⋅365]; v. DDG: 1588 [CI 181; 2994], P = 0⋅09). GH levels decreased significantly and similarly between groups (SDG: −0⋅61 [CI −0⋅26, −0⋅96], P = 0⋅00) v. DDG: −1⋅1 [CI −0⋅57, −1⋅62], P = 0⋅00). Objective: To analyze the forms of correct disposal of domestic waste from insulin therapy and develop a technology for patient education (booklet). Methods: Descriptive and exploratory study, integrative review type. The survey of publications was conducted between July and December 2021, from the Latin American Literature in Health Sciences (Lilacs), Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo) and Virtual Health Library (VHL) databases, using the following descriptors: Diabetes Mellitus; Insulin; Waste Management. Results: It was identified that the guidance to people with Diabetes Mellitus regarding the correct disposal of needles, syringes, lancets, reagent strips, among others is deficient and that the lack of specific Brazilian legislation for health care waste produced in households is the main problem for the inadequate management of health care waste. From the findings it was possible to develop a technology for education of people using insulin. Conclusion: There is a need to invest in guidance and prevention actions, to reinforce to users the care in the disposal of health services waste. The training of health professionals enables the transfer of appropriate and consistent guidance to users, aiming to protect those who produce waste, the collectors and the environment. Objective: to describe the evolution of risk factors for the development of foot ulcers in patients with DM, in three subsequent exams over a period of 3 years, in a medical specialty center. Method: a descriptive, retrospective and longitudinal study, with 102 patients, between the years 2016 and 2019, who performed three sequential foot exams, based on the standard established by the international consensus of the diabetic foot, being use of footwear, collected from the Diabetic Foot System. Results: 86.27% of patients reported neuropathic symptoms, mainly burning, numbness and tingling. Most were hypertensive (74.71%) and elderly (67.65%), of these, 13.73% had previous infarction and 72.55% were female. From the first to the third examination, the "very low risk" increased 7.84% and the "low risk" 8.83%, while the "high risk" reduced 17.65%. Objective: to analyze the quality of life of people with diabetic foot ulcers in outpatient treatment. Method: descriptive and cross-sectional study, conducted between February and April 2019, with 50 people with Diabetes Mellitus, followed in a specialized outpatient clinic. The sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire, the Freiburg Life Quality Assessment Wound Version (FLQA-WK), descriptive statistics and the Student's t-comparison and Anova tests were applied. Results: a lower score was observed in the physical symptoms domain (1.84) and a higher score in the daily life domain (3.52). The total quality of life score was 2.61, on a scale ranging from one to five, with significant correlation between clinical variables, such as time of diagnosis of diabetes >10 years (p-value=0.005), hospital admissions (p-value=0.019) and nephropathy (p-value=0.001). Introduction: Diabetic Foot (DF) is the leading cause of nontraumatic amputations in Western countries, causing death or physical and mental disability, poor quality of life and high cost to society. Objective: To analyze the prevalence of DF and related risk factors in the diabetic population residing in Espirito Santo State, Brazil. Methods: Cross-sectional, descriptive study with time series design, using secondary data on morbidity of individuals with DF living in the State of Espirito Santo, registered and followed by the Hypertensive and Diabetic Registration and Monitoring System. Results: From 64,196 diabetic patients, 3.9% had Type 1 DM, 10.9% Type 2 DM and 85.2% had hypertension. The prevalence of DF was 2.9% in type 1 DM, 3.3% in type 2 DM and 4.5% in DM with hypertension. Higher rates of DF were observed in males, aged over 60 years in type 1 and type 2 DM, and up to 19 years in DM with hypertension, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI), stroke and Chronic Kidney disease (CKD). In overweight individuals, the prevalence of DF was higher only in type 1 DM. There was a significant association in all variables except overweight in both types of DM, sedentary lifestyle and stroke in type 1 DM. Conclusion: Findings showed important prevalence of DF, with higher concentration in men older than 60 years, on smoking, sedentary lifestyle, AMI, stroke and CKD, with significant statistical association in the analyzed variables, except for overweight in both types of DM, as well as sedentary lifestyle and stroke in type 1 DM. Objective: to identify the space-time pattern of mortality due to Diabetes Mellitus in Brazil, as well as its relationship with social development indicators. Method: an ecological and time series nationwide study based on secondary data from the Unified Health System Informatics Department, with space-time analysis and inclusion of indicators in non-spatial and spatial regression models. The following was performed: overall mortality rate calculation; characterization of the sociodemographic and regional profiles of the death cases by means of descriptive and time analysis; and elaboration of thematic maps. Results: a total of 601,521 deaths related to Diabetes Mellitus were recorded in Brazil, representing a mean mortality rate of 29.5/100,000 inhabitants. The states of Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas and Sergipe, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul presented high-high clusters. By using regression models, it was verified that the Gini index (β=11.7) and the Family Health Strategy coverage (β=3.9) were the indicators that most influenced mortality due to Diabetes Mellitus in Brazil. Objective: to relate Frailty Syndrome and sarcopenia in older adults with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus and identify potential risk factors for frailty and sarcopenia. Method: this descriptive epidemiological study was conducted with 140 older adults in the municipality of Sinop, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The frailty phenotype was used for the assessment of Frailty Syndrome, and a physical assessment questionnaire with calf circumference measurement was used for the assessment of sarcopenia. Results: regarding Frailty Syndrome, a higher percentage was observed in older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus compared to those without the disease (p = 0.00). Concerning the presence of sarcopenia, older adults with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus showed similar values, with no statistical significance (p = .74). Frailty Syndrome was associated with physical inactivity (95%CI: 3.29-56.55), age over 75 years (95%CI: 3.30-27.82), low family income (95%CI: 1.80-50.98), and comorbidities (95%CI: 4.90-5.40). However, sarcopenia was associated with the presence of physical inactivity (95%CI: 1.26-10.44), low weight/eutrophic (95%CI: 3.32-26.76), and malnutrition/nutritional risk (95%CI: 1.30-7.70) for older adults with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus. Conclusion: older adults with diabetes have a higher vulnerability to develop Frailty Syndrome, necessitating the adoption of preventive measures in primary healthcare. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diabetic neuropathy is one of the main complications of Diabetes Mellitus, which can lead to loss of protective sensation, motor, and plantar pressure alteration, generating deformities, abnormal gait and mechanical trauma to the feet. Objective: to evaluate the distribution of plantar pressure, sensorimotor changes, balance and associated factors to plantar pressure changes in people with peripheral diabetic neuropathy. Method: Cross-sectional study conducted with individuals registered in the primary public health service of a city in the east of São Paulo – Brazil. The sample was composed by people with Diabetes Mellitus and Peripheral Neuropathy identified by the Michigan Screening Instrument. It were investigated variables such as sensory-motor changes, static and dynamic plantar pressure using baropodometry and balance using the Berg scale. A significance level of 5% was adopted for all tests used. Results: Of the 200 individuals evaluated, 52.55% had no plantar protective sensitivity, the static evaluation did not demonstrated changes in the peak of plantar pressure, however in the dynamics the mean in the right foot was 6.0 (±2) kgf/cm2 and 6,7 (±1.62) kgf/cm2 on the left foot, the center of static pressure on the right foot was lower (10.55 ± 3.82) than on the left foot (11.97 ± 3.90), pointing hyper plantar pressure. The risk of falling was high, ranging from 8 to 56 points, with an average of 40.9 (±10.77). Conclusion: The absence of protective plantar sensitivity, increased pressure, biomechanical changes lead to loss of balance and are predictive of complications in the feet due to diabetic neuropathy. This study aims to analyze the prevalence of self-reported diabetes and its associated factors in the Brazilian adult population. It is a cross-sectional study using the 2019 National Health Survey. Prevalence and crude prevalence ratios (PRc) and adjusted prevalence ratios (PRa) of self-reported diabetes were estimated, with confidence intervals (95% CI), using Poisson regression. In the 82,349 adults, the prevalence of self-reported diabetes was 7.7%. Positively associated factors were: advanced age with greater association after 60 years (PRa 24.87; 95%CI 15.78-39.18); living in the Northeast (PRa 1.16; 95%CI 1.04-1.29), Southeast (PRa 1.27; 95% CI 1.14-1.43), South (PRa 1.18; 95%CI 1, 05-1.34), and Midwest (PRa 1.21; 95%CI 1.06-1.38); being a former smoker (PRa 1.17; 95%CI 1.09-1.27); self-assessment of regular health (PRa 2.41; 95%CI 2.21-2.64), bad/very bad (PRa 3.45; 95%CI 3.06-3.88); having heart disease (PRa 1.81; 95%CI 1.64-2.00), hypertension (PRa 2.84; 95%CI 2.60-3.69), high cholesterol (PRa 2.22; 95%CI 2.05-2.41), overweight (PRa 1.49; 95%CI 1.36-1.64), and obesity (PRa 2.25; 95%CI 2.05-2.47). It could be concluded that diabetes in Brazilian adults is associated with sociodemographic factors, aging, lifestyle, and morbidities. Background: Primary health care-oriented systems provide better healthcare, especially for chronic diseases. This study analyzed the perspectives of physicians and nurses performing care for patients with chronic diseases in Primary Health Care in a Brazilian city.Methods: A qualitative study was conducted in Vitória da Conquista, Bahia, Brazil, using semi-structured interviews with five physicians and 18 nurses. The interview included questions from an analytical matrix based on three dimensions of healthcare practices: organizational, technical care, and biopsychosocial, following a deductive approach. The interviews were fully transcribed and analyzed using a thematic categorical approach.Results: The results indicated that the provision of chronic care occurs in a comprehensive way. Potentialities were identified in the diversification of access, offer of care actions and technologies, integration of teamwork, and bringing together social networks to foster autonomy and self-care. Weaknesses were mostly related to the high number of people in the teams, follow-up of several cases, high turnover of support teams, low integration of Primary Health Care with other levels, difficulties in intersectoral articulation and family participation in care.Conclusion: The multidimensional assessment of health care practices aimed at individuals with chronic noncommunicable diseases was useful to portray the strengths and weaknesses of the services. It also ratifies the need to consider the importance of and investment in primary health care by offering the necessary technical, political, logistical and financial support to the units, to ensure the sustainability of the actions by nurses, doctors and entire team. Introduction: Diabetes Mellitus is a public health problem, it is classified into several types, with different characteristics, complications and need for treatment. However, nutritional education aims at educational ways to better control the disease. Objective: To conceive and elaborate nutritional education workshops for diabetic patients. Materials and methods: Qualitative development study, carried out in 2018, in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil. Workshops were developed with group dynamics, collective work technique, using criteria for making such as: Title, Target audience, Objectives, Expected results, Recommendations to the mediator, How to play, Tools, Estimated time and Number of participants. Results: Five workshops were developed addressing diabetes health concepts in order to guide patients about the disease; seeks to stimulate changes in life habits, due to the complications of the disease; difficulties and potential of health professionals and the discussion of the best forms of guidance for patients with the disease; consumption of restricted and permitted foods for diabetic patients from images drawn by patients, glycemic index of foods according to their classification, high, medium and low glycemic index, referring to the traffic light colors. Conclusion: Aspects were approached from the basic level of knowledge of the disease to more specific concepts about its nutritional treatment. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic systemic disease with a high morbidity and mortality rate. As it can affect several organs and systems, diabetes mellitus has a negative impact on the quality of life of its patients. The aim of the study was to demonstrate which domains of quality of life are impacted by diabetes mellitus. A cross-sectional study was carried out with 111 people with diabetes mellitus. The Brazilian version of the Medical Outcome Survey Short-Form 36 (SF-36) questionnaire was used to assess quality of life. The data were submitted to descriptive statistical analysis. Most of the sample was female (61.3%) and the mean age was 53.2±16.8 years. The greatest impairment was observed in the pain domain, with a score of 35.8±22.8. The functional capacity domain presented the least impairment, with a mean score of 60.8±31.5. Thus, pain was the domain with the most impact on the lives of individuals with diabetes mellitus, while functional capacity showed the least impairment.
