Objective: To create, develop, and validate a scale that identifies the environmental and personal barriers that make it difficult to adhere to the practice of physical exercise on a regular basis in a population of Brazilian adults. Methods: We include adult individuals, aged 18–59 years, practitioners or former practitioners of physical exercise, with Brazilian Portuguese as their mother tongue. In the development and validation phases of the process, 6 specialists in the field of the health assessed the content validity: firstly, the specialists were asked to freely list the questions they would ask to investigate the barriers to adherence to regulating physical activity. Secondly, after compiling all the suggestions listed and eliminating suggestions with similar content, the items suggested in the first round were sent to the specialists so that an evaluation of all questions using a 5-point Likert scale and the content validity coefficient was calculated. We then evaluated the structural validity, construct validity, reliability, internal consistency, and ceiling and floor effects of the Regular Physical Exercise Adherence Scale (REPEAS). Results: Sixteen items were proposed to measure the factors that make it difficult to adhere to the regular practice of physical exercise. The internal structure of the REPEAS initially tested was based on the theoretical proposal of creating the instrument with two domains. After the structural analysis, we used the modification indices to identify the redundant items of the instrument. Consequently, the final version of the REPEAS after factor analysis had 12 items. Thus, the structure with 2 domains and 12 items presented adequate fit indices. With regard to construct validity, the REPEAS scores were compared in two distinct groups: irregular practitioners/ex-practitioners versus regular practitioners of physical exercise, in which a significant difference could be observed between groups (p < 0.001) for both the domains. Acceptable reliability was observed for the environment and personal domains, with ICC values of 0.86 and 0.94, in the same order. For internal consistency, Cronbach's alpha value was 0.908 (environmental domain) and 0.915 (personal domain), these values being adequate for the REPEAS. Conclusion: The REPEAS is a scale with a valid two-dimensional internal structure, consisting of 12 items, reliable and with a valid construct, which supports its use in the clinical, epidemiological, and research contexts in Brazil. Background: The purpose of this study was to translate, cross-culturally adapt and validate the Gillette Functional Assessment Questionnaire (FAQ) into Brazilian Portuguese. Methods: The translation and cross-cultural adaptation was carried out in accordance with international recommendations. The FAQ was applied to a sample of 102 patients diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP). Construct validity was assessed using Spearman's correlation coefficient (rho), and the FAQ score was correlated with the Functional Mobility Scale (FMS) and Gross Motor Function Classification Scale (GMFCS). A subsample of 50 patients was used to assess reliability using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM) and minimum detectable difference (MDD). Ceiling and floor effects were also evaluated. Results: The Brazilian version of the FAQ showed excellent test-retest reliability by the assessment of the physiotherapist (ICC = 0.99) and respondent (ICC = 0.97), as well as excellent inter-examiner reliability (ICC = 0.94). The SEM was 0.23 (physiotherapist), 0.47 (respondent) and 0.64 (inter-examiner), while the MDD was 0.64 (physiotherapist), 1.29 (respondent) and 1.76 (inter-examiner). The classification of gross motor function showed a high correlation with the FAQ applied by the physiotherapist (rho = -0.89) and by the respondent (rho = -0.87). The FMS-5 m was highly correlated with the FAQ applied by the physiotherapist and the respondent (rho = 0.88 and rho = 0.87, respectively). The FMS-50 and FMS-500 presented very high correlation with the FAQ applied by the physiotherapist (rho = 0.91 for both) and high correlation with the FAQ applied by the respondent (rho = 0.89 and rho = 0.88, respectively). The Brazilian version of the FAQ did not present the ceiling and floor effects. Conclusion: The FAQ presented adequate psychometric properties in patients with CP, indicating that it is possible to use it as a measure of functional gait mobility in Brazil. Background: Delirium is an underdiagnosed condition and this may be related, among other causes, to the incorrect use of assessment tools due to lack of knowledge about cognitive assessment and lack of training of the care team. The aim of this study was to investigate the difficulties encountered by the nursing team in the application of the Confusion Assessment Method for the Intensive Care Unit (CAM-ICU) in patients on mechanical ventilation. Methods: This is descriptive study with a qualitative approach in a private tertiary hospital located in northeast Brazil. Data collection took place from July 2018 to January 2019. We included 32 nurses and used face-to-face semi-structured interviews. The recorded data were analysed using content analysis. This study followed the recommendations of the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research (SRQR). Results: We identified three major categories: lack of knowledge of professionals, subdivided into deficit in academic formation, difficulty in the differential diagnosis of delirium and delusion, and lack of knowledge about the steps of the CAM-ICU; difficulty in patient cooperation; and lack of adequate training to apply the CAM-ICU. Background: Our objective was to verify the reliability, internal consistency and construct validity of the Barthel Index in Brazilian cancer patients in palliative care. Methods: We included patients with cancer, both sexes, and age greater than or equal to 18 years. We used to evaluate patients the Barthel Index, Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS), and European Organization for Research in the Treatment of Cancer Questionnaire-core 15 (EORTC-QLQ-C15-PAL). The measurement properties evaluated in this study were test–retest and inter-rater reliability and construct validity (tested by means of correlations with other instruments). Results: We included 220 patients for construct validity and a subsample of 27 patients for reliability analyses. We observed adequate reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient ≥ 0.962) and internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.942). There were adequate correlations between the Barthel Index and the KPS (rho = 0.766), and the functional capacity domain of the EORTC-QLQ-C15-PAL (rho = -0.698). Conclusion: The Brazilian version of the Barthel Index presents adequate test–retest and inter-rater reliability, acceptable internal consistency, and valid construct for measuring functional independence in cancer patients. Objective: To translate, cross-culturally adapt and assess measurement properties of the translated version of the Northwick Park Neck Pain Questionnaire into Brazilian Portuguese. Design: Cross-sectional study. Settings: University healthcare facility and online. Participants: People with chronic neck pain (n = 178). Interventions: Not applicable. Main outcome measures: Participants answered the translated version of Northwick Park Neck Pain Questionnaire, the Neck Disability Index, the Numerical Rating Scale for pain, the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia and the Pain Catastrophizing Scale. Seven to ten days after that, a subset of 84 participants answered the Northwick Park Neck Pain Questionnaire again. The structural (exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses) and construct validities, internal consistency, reliability and concordance were assessed. Level of significance was set at 5%. Results: Participants' (35.6 ± 13.5 years old) with symptoms duration of 54.4 ± 60.4 months scored 25.5 ± 14.0 on the Brazilian Northwick Park Neck Pain Questionnaire and 11.9 ± 5.8 on the Neck Disability Index. The structural analysis showed that the short version of the Northwick Park Neck Pain Questionnaire has an adequate structure to measure disability due to neck pain. Correlations with other questionnaires were between 0.268 and 0.678, Cronbach's alfa was 0.76, intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.96, standard error of measurement was 2.74 and minimal detectable change was 7.60. Conclusion: The short version of the Northwick Park Neck Pain Questionnaire is valid and reliable to be used in patients with chronic neck pain, as it presented adequate measurement properties of structural and construct validity, reliability and concordance. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether pain intensity and catastrophizing are associated with fear of falls and the number of falls in older persons with knee osteoarthritis (OA). A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 100 volunteers (male and female participants), 60 to 80 years old, with a diagnosis of knee OA. Patients were recruited from a physical therapy clinic in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, from March 2019 to November 2019. The following measures were used for the evaluations: Numerical Rating Pain Scale (NRPS), Pain-Related Self-Statement Scale (PRSS), and Falls Efficacy Scale. In statistical analysis, histograms were created to determine the distribution of data. Spearman's correlation coefficients (r s) were then calculated to determine the strength of the associations among the variables. The receiver operating characteristic curve was used to identify the accuracy of PRSS and NRPS in differentiating participants with a history of falls from those without. No significant correlation was found among the pain intensity, pain catastrophizing, fear of falling, and number of falls (r s value ranging from –0.033 to –0.167; P value ranging from.096-.743). The accuracy of PRSS and NRPS in differentiating participants with falls from those without was insufficient, with area under the curve values of 0.46 and 0.42, respectively. Background: The Work Role Functioning Questionnaire 2.0 (WRFQ 2.0) is an instrument that measures the difficulties perceived by workers in meeting work demands, given their physical or emotional health, but it has not yet been adapted for Brazil. Thus, this study aimed to translate, cross-culturally adapt and assess the psychometric properties of the WRFQ 2.0 into Brazilian Portuguese.Methods: This is an observational study. Initially, translation and cross-cultural adaptation into Brazilian Portuguese was carried out. After that, this version was submitted to an evaluation of its internal structure. The internal consistency and test-retest reliability were assessed. To determine the construct validity, Spearman's correlation coefficient (rho) was used to determine the magnitude of correlation between the WRFQ 2.0 and the Work Ability Index (WAI), Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) and Self -Estimated Functional Inability because of Pain (SEFIP-work).Results: The internal structure with five domains and 27 items presented adequate fit indices for the Brazilian version of the WRFQ 2.0. Adequate correlations of the five domains of the WRFQ 2.0 with the NPRS, WAI and SEFIP-work were found (rho ranged between 0.145 and 0.338). The test-retest reliability of the WRFQ 2.0 ranged from substantial to excellent (intraclass correlation coefficient ≥ 0.785) and internal consistency was adequate (Cronbach's alpha ≥ 0.852).Conclusion: The Brazilian Portuguese version of the WRFQ 2.0 presents valid internal structure with five domains and 27 items, adequate construct based on correlations with other instruments, and acceptable test-retest reliability and internal consistency. Objective: To investigate the structural validity of the Brazilian version of the Neck Bournemouth Questionnaire in patients with chronic neck pain. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Community participants collected via online platform. Subjects: Participants with neck pain (minimal pain intensity of 3 points at rest on 11-point Numerical Rating Scale), both genders and aged ⩾18 years old. Main measure: The Numerical Rating Scale, Neck Disability Index, Pain-Related Catastrophizing Thoughts Scale, Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia and the Neck Bournemouth Questionnaire were completed. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to identify dimensionality and to compare different structures of the Neck Bournemouth Questionnaire. Results: We included 103 participants. The sample consisted mostly of adults (mean age = 33.64 years, standard deviation = 10.48 years), females (n = 82, 79.6%), lean, single and with higher education. The exploratory factor analysis with implementation of the parallel analysis identified the one-dimensional structure of the Neck Bournemouth Questionnaire, with a Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin value of 0.80 and Bartlett's test significant (P < 0.05). We observed that all structures tested in this study presented a high amount of residues in confirmatory factor analysis, which were identified by the value of root mean square error of approximation > 0.08 and chi-square/degree of freedom > 3.00. Conclusion: The internal structure of the Brazilian version of the Neck Bournemouth Questionnaire is not clear and well-defined. Background: Our objective was to perform the translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and validation of the Quality Care Questionnaire-Palliative Care (QCQ-PC) into Brazilian Portuguese for cancer patients in palliative care. The translation and cross-cultural adaptation comprised the following stages: translation, synthesis of translations, back-translation, analysis by a committee of experts, testing of the pre-final version, and definition of the final version. The evaluated measurement properties were: structural validity using factor analysis, test–retest reliability using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), internal consistency using Cronbach's alpha, and construct validity using the correlations between the QCQ-PC and other questionnaires already validated in Brazil. Results: Two hundred and twenty-five cancer patients were included for validity analyses, and a subsample of 30 patients was used for test–retest reliability. The most adequate fit indexes were for the short version of the QCQ-PC (SF-QCQ-PC), with two domains and 12 items. There was adequate reliability and internal consistency, with values of the ICC ≥ 0.83 and Cronbach's alpha ≥0.82. There were correlations > 0.30 between the SF-QCQ-PC and the Karnofsky Performance Scale, the Palliative Prognostic Index, the sadness domain of the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System, the Barthel Index, and all domains related to the McGill Quality of Life Questionnaire and the European Organization for Research in the Treatment of Cancer Questionnaire-core. Abstract Objective The purpose of this study was to correlate measurements of chronic neck pain with the balance and mobility of the lower limbs and to compare these variables between individuals with chronic neck pain and asymptomatic participants. Methods This was a blinded cross-sectional study. Participants with chronic neck pain (n = 30) and asymptomatic participants (n = 30) were included in the study. To measure pain in the neck region, the Numeric Rating Scale, Neck Disability Index, and Pain-Related Catastrophizing Thoughts Scale were applied. The assessment of postural balance and mobility of the lower limbs was made using the Timed Up and Go Test, Functional Reach Test (FRT), Lateral Reach Test, and 30-second Chair Stand Test. Results No statistically (P >.05) and clinically (d < 0.50) significant differences were identified for the variables tested here. However, regarding the correlations, a significant association was identified only between the intensity of pain during cervical movements and FRT (r = –0.312). Conclusion Young adults with chronic neck pain present changes in static balance measured by means of the FRT; that is, the higher the intensity of pain, the lower the anteroposterior excursion of the body during the execution of the test. Abstract Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of combined manual therapy (MT) and diadynamic (DD) currents on myofascial trigger points of the upper trapezius muscle in individuals with a diagnosis of unilateral shoulder impingement syndrome. Methods A randomized clinical trial was conducted involving 60 individuals with shoulder impingement syndrome who were allocated to the following 3 groups: (1) MT and DD currents (MTDD), (2) MT alone, and (3) DD currents alone. The participants were submitted to 16 treatment sessions over an 8-week period and were evaluated using the Numerical Rating Pain Scale as well as the pain and disability subscales of the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index. Results Differences in Numerical Rating Pain Scale scores (secondary outcome) between MTDD and MT groups (mean difference 2.25 points, 95% confidence interval 1.07-3.42) and between MTDD and DD groups (mean difference 2.30 points, 95% confidence interval 1.42-3.17) were clinically relevant. No clinical gains were observed in the comparisons between groups of Shoulder Pain and Disability Index scores. Conclusion The combination of MT and DD currents on myofascial trigger points was more effective at reducing pain intensity but not disability than each therapy performed individually for patients with unilateral shoulder impingement syndrome. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: There is a close interaction between the mandibular and cervical systems due to the existing neurological and biomechanical communications. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between neck disability and mandibular range of motion (ROM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-two women aged between 18 and 40 years were recruited and allocated to four groups using two outcome measures: the Neck Disability Index (NDI) and the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD): Group I (n = 13), healthy volunteers; Group II (n = 13), volunteers with TMD and neck disability; Group III (n = 13), volunteers with TMD and without neck disability; and Group IV (n = 13), volunteers with neck disability and without TMD. Mandibular ROM was evaluated as part of the RDC/TMD clinical examination. Statistical analysis involved one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey’s test for comparisons between groups. Spearman’s correlation coefficients were calculated to determined correlations among the variables. RESULTS: Significant differences were found in the mandibular ROM of functional opening in the comparisons between Groups I and III (p = 0.009) and between Groups III and IV (p = 0.024). No significant association was found between mandibular ROM and the NDI score (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Based on the methodology employed, there is no association between mandibular ROM and neck disability in university women. In this sense, clinical interventions focusing on the flexibility of the temporomandibular joint does not have repercussions on the neck disability and vice versa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Pain is a common clinical manifestation in individuals with temporomandibular disorder (TMD). The literature report changes in microcirculation in this condition. The aim of the present study was to correlate skin surface temperature at the central point of the masticatory muscles with pain intensity in women with myogenous TMD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) and the visual analogue scale (VAS) were used to divide 40 female university students into four groups: control group (n=10), mild pain group (n=10), moderate pain group (n=10) and severe pain group (n=10). Infrared thermography was used to assess the masticatory muscles. RESULTS: No significant correlations were found between pain intensity and skin surface temperature over the left masseter (p=0.368), right masseter (p=0.618), left anterior temporalis (p=0.293) and right anterior temporalis (p=0.922) muscles. No correlations were found between pain intensity and asymmetry of the masseter (p=0.375) and anterior temporalis (p=0.090) muscles. Moreover, no significant difference in skin surface temperature (p> 0.05) was found among the different groups. CONCLUSION: Pain intensity in women with myogenous TMD was not associated with skin surface temperature at the central point of the masseter and anterior temporalis muscles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Heart rate variability (HRV) among other methods can be used to assess diabetic cardiac autonomic neuropathy by cardiac intervals were recorded. However, the amount of error depending on this measurement methodology is unclear. To evaluate the intra- and inter-rater reliability to calculate HRV indices, comparing different times and by different trained examiners in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Thirty individuals of both genders, aged between 18 and 45 years, with T2DM. The RR interval (RRi) were recorded during a 10 min period on supine position using a portable heart rate monitor (Polar® S810i model). HRV indices were calculated by the software Kubios® HRV analysis (version 2.2). Linear (Mean RRi; STD RR; Mean HR; rMSSD; RR Tri; TINN LF; HF; total power) and non-linear (SD1; SD2; DFα1; DFα2, ApEn and, SampEn) indices were calculated by two examiners with an interval of one week between them. Substantial to excellent was found for reliability of the intra-examiner, with intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) values ranging from 0.79 to 0.99, standard error of measurement (SEM) between 0.02 and 123.49 (in percentage: 1.83 and 16.67), and minimum detectable change (MDC) between 0.07 and 342.30. Regarding the inter-examiner reliability, substantial to excellent reliability was found, with ICC values ranging from 0.73 to 0.97, SEM between 0.04 and 178.13 (in percentage: 3.26 and 24.18), and MDC between 0.11 and 493.77. The use of the portable heart rate monitor to measure HRV showed acceptable intra and inter reliability in individuals with T2DM, supporting the use of this method of evaluation in research and clinical practice. Study Design: Cross-sectional study.Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the structural validity of the Brazilian version of the Neck Disability Index (NDI) in patients with chronic neck pain.Summary Of Background Data: NDI is widely used in clinical and scientific contexts, although its structure has not been evaluated in the Brazilian version.Methods: Native Brazilian Portuguese speakers, aged ≥18 years, with neck pain complaint of at least 3 months, and minimal pain rating of 3 points at rest or during neck movements were included. Exploratory factorial analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factorial analysis (CFA) were used. In EFA, the adequacy of the model was assessed using Bartlett test of sphericity and Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin test. In CFA, the goodness-of-fit was assessed by the indices: root mean square error of approximation with 90% of confidence interval, comparative fit index, Tucker-Lewis Index, standardized root mean square residual, and χ2/degree of freedom. Akaike information criterion (AIC) and Bayesian information criterion (BIC) were considered to compare the models.Results: Two hundred fifty-four participants with chronic neck pain were included. The NDI model with one domain and five items presented the most adequate goodness-of-fit indexes and the lowest values of AIC and BIC, when compared with models with one domain and 10, eight, or seven items, and with the model with two domains and 10 items.Conclusion: In the Brazilian context, the NDI version with one domain and five items (personal care, concentration, work, driving, and recreation) presents the best structure according to the factorial analysis.Level of Evidence: 5. Highlights • IMT has been used in rehabilitation programs aiming to increase exercise tolerance in COPD subjects. • The autonomic imbalance is a risk factor for cardiovascular events and is well established in the COPD population. • At this point, no study has studied the effect of IMT on the autonomic modulation of COPD subjects. • A low-intensity IMT training improved cardiac autonomic modulation and exercise tolerance in COPD patients. Abstract Objectives We aimed to evaluate the effect a regular inspiratory muscle training program on autonomic modulation measured by heart rate variability, exercise capacity and respiratory function in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease subjects (COPD). Design Single-center controlled study, with balanced randomization (1:1 for two arms). Setting A COPD reference hospital localized in Sao Luís, Brazil. Participants 22 COPD subjects joined the study. Interventions Three times a week for four weeks inspiratory muscle training (IMT) at 30% of PI max. Main outcome measures Pulmonary capacities and inspiratory pressure, total six-minute walk test and, cardiac autonomic modulation. Results The intervention group showed improvements in the cardiac autonomic modulation, with increased vagal modulation (total variability and HF [ms2; adjusted p < 0.05]); increased expiratory and inspiratory capacities and, increased distance in the 6-min walk test. Conclusion 12 weeks of IMT at 30% of the maximal inspiratory pressure increased cardiac autonomic modulation, expiratory and inspiratory and exercise capacity in COPD subjects. Objective: To examine the measurement properties of the Regular Physical Exercise Adherence Scale (REPEAS) in Brazilians with chronic pain., Methods: Cross-sectional and longitudinal design (washout period for reliability). The study was conducted in two Brazilian states, Maranhão and São Paulo, and included Brazilian adults, irregular exercisers, former exercisers or non-exercise practitioners, aged 18 to 59 years and with chronic pain. The instruments used in this study were: the REPEAS, the Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), the Baecke Habitual Physical Activity Questionnaire (BHPAQ), the Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (PSEQ), and the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire for general pain (RMDQ-g). The evaluation focused on structural validity, construct validity, reliability (with standard error of measurement and minimum detectable change), internal consistency, and floor and ceiling effects., Results: The two-dimensional structure was tested through confirmatory factor analysis, which resulted in adequate fit indeces: chi-square values/degrees of freedom = 1.541, Tucker-Lewis Index = 0.966, comparative fit index = 0.974, root mean square error of approximation = 0.074, and standardized root mean square residual = 0.068. Additionally, satisfactory factor loadings (> 0.40) were obtained. Test-retest reliability and internal consistency were adequate for the environmental factors domain (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] = 0.79, Cronbach's alpha = 0.88) and the personal factors domain (ICC = 0.97, Cronbach's alpha = 0.93). In hypothesis testing for construct validity, we observed a significant correlation with magnitude below 0.30 of the environmental factors domain of the REPEAS with RMDQ-g, PSEQ and sport domain of the BHPAQ. For the personal factors domain, we observed a significant correlation with a magnitude of 0.30 to 0.50 with RMDQ-g, PSEQ, and sport domain of the BHPAQ, and below 0.30 with leisure domain of the BHPAQ. No floor or ceiling effects were found for the REPEAS domains., Conclusion: The REPEAS is a valid instrument with a two-dimensional internal structure consisting of 12 items. Purpose: To translate and cross-culturally adapt the Spine Functional Index (SFI) into Brazilian Portuguese (SFI-Br) in individuals with musculoskeletal spine disorders., Methods: Participants (n=194) answered the Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire for General Pain (RMDQ-g), and SFI-25 incorporating the SFI-10. Structural validity, from confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), used comparative fit index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis index (TLI), root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA), and chi-square/degrees of freedom (DF). The best structure was considered from the lower values of the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC). Construct and criterion validity used Spearman's correlation coefficient (rho). Internal consistency used Cronbach's alpha, reliability used intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC 2,1 ), with ceiling and floor effects determined. Error used the standard error of the measurement (SEM) and minimal detectable change, 90% level (MDC 90 )., Results: Adequate fit indices demonstrated an unequivocal one-factor structure only for the SFI-10 (chi-square/DF <3.00, CFI and TLI >0.90, RMSEA <0.08). The SFI-10-Br correlation was high with the SFI-Br (rho=0.914, p<0.001), moderate for the RMDQ-g (rho=-0.78), SF-36 functional capacity domain (rho=0.718) and NPRS (rho=-0.526); and adequate for the remaining SF-36 domains (rho>0.30). Test-retest reliability (ICC 2,1 =0.826) and internal consistency (alpha=0.864) were high. No ceiling or floor effects were observed, and error was satisfactory (SEM=9.08%, MDC 90 =25.15%)., Conclusion: The SFI Brazilian version was successfully produced with the 10-item version showing an unequivocal one-factor structure, high construct and criterion validity, reliability, internal consistency, and satisfactory error. Background: The Work Role Functioning Questionnaire 2.0 (WRFQ 2.0) is an important instrument within the context of occupational health, consisting of 27 items and 5 domains. In addition, a short version of WRFQ 2.0 with 5 items (WRFQ-5) was proposed, showing agreement with the long version. Thus, we aimed to confirm the number of factors of the WRFQ-5 short version and to verify the structural, construct, and criterion validity, reliability, internal consistency, and analysis of ceiling and floor effects of the Brazilian version of the WRFQ-5 in a general workers population., Methods: A questionnaire validation and measurement properties study. We evaluated the internal structure of the WRFQ-5 by means of confirmatory factor analysis. Construct validity was assessed by correlating the WRFQ-5 with the Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), Work Ability Index (WAI), and Self-Estimated Functional Inability because of Pain (SEFIP-work). Criterion validity was assessed by correlating the WRFQ-5 with the 5 domains of the WRFQ 2.0. Test-retest reliability and internal consistency were also evaluated., Results: We observed positive correlations (p < .05) between the WRFQ-5 and the WAI (rho = 0.161 to 0.308) and negative correlations (p < .05) between the WRFQ-5 and the SEFIP-work (rho = -0.293). The WRFQ-5 significantly and positively correlates with the 5 domains of WRFQ 2.0 (rho = 0.742 to 0.830). The test-retest reliability of the WRFQ-5 was excellent (ICC 2,1  = 0.935) and the internal consistency was adequate (Cronbach's alpha = 0.938). We did not observe ceiling and floor effects., Conclusion: The one-dimensional internal structure of the WRFQ-5 in Brazilian Portuguese has a valid internal structure and construct, as well as adequate reliability and internal consistency.

Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is considered a chronic disease with numerous secondary complications that negatively affect the quality of life of patients. However, the specific, known and validated instruments for Brazilian Portuguese are too extensive, which often makes their use infeasible., Objective: To validate the internal structure of the Brazilian version of the Diabetes Quality of Life (DQOL) measure., Methodology: Patients with DM type 1 or 2, between the ages of 18 and 76, were evaluated between April 2022 and May 2022. The survey was conducted online using the Google Forms platform. The original DQOL contains 46 multiple-choice questions organized into four domains. For structural validity, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed using RStudio software (Boston, MA, USA) with the packages lavaan and semPlot., Results: A total of 354 subjects were evaluated. The 3-domain, 24-item version of the DQOL was the most adequate, with acceptable values for all fit indices (chi-square/GL < 3, TLI and CFI > 0.90, and RMSEA and SRMR < 0.08)., Conclusion: The structure with three domains and 24 items is the most appropriate based on factor analysis. Background: To date, there are no studies in the literature that define the internal structure of the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK) in patients with chronic neck pain based on factorial analysis. As such, we aimed to verify and identify the best structure of the Brazilian version of the TSK in patients with chronic neck pain., Methods: We included Brazilian participants aged ≥18 years, both sexes, with self-reported neck pain for more than 3 months and pain intensity ≥3 on the Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS). Dimensionality and number of TSK items were assessed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). We tested the following internal structures: structure 1 (1 domain and 17 items), structure 2 (1 domain and 11 items), structure 3 (2 domains and 11 items), and structure 4 (2 domains and 9 items). We used the Pain-Related Catastrophizing Thoughts Scale (PCTS) and the NPRS for construct validity. In addition, we assessed test-retest reliability for the seven-day interval using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC 2,1 ), Cronbach's alpha to assess internal consistency, and ceiling and floor effects., Results: The study sample included of 335 patients. Most were women (77.6%), young adults (~ 34 years), single (48.4%), with complete primary education (57.3%), physically inactive (66.6%), with a mean pain duration of 46 months and a mean pain intensity of ~ 5 points on the NPRS. Redundancy was found in the following items: item 1 with item 2 (modification indices = 21.419) and item 13 with item 15 (modification indices = 13.641). Subsequently, based on these paired analyses, the items with the lowest factor loadings (items 2 and 15) were excluded. As such, TSK structure 4 was composed of two domains ("somatic focus" and "activity avoidance") and 9 items, which showed adequate fit indices and lower AIC and SABIC values. We observed significant values (p < 0.05) with a correlation magnitude greater than 0.142 to 0.657 between the two domains of the TSK-neck and the other instruments (PCTS and NPRS). We found excellent reliability (ICC 2,1  ≥ 0.96) and adequate internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha ≥0.98) of the TSK-neck. Finally, ceiling and floor effects were not observed., Conclusion: The TSK-neck structure with two domains (somatic focus and activity avoidance) and nine items is the most appropriate for patients with chronic neck pain., (© 2024. Purpose: To identify the best internal structure of the Brazilian version of the Anterior Knee Pain Scale (AKPS), comparing different instrument structures (structural validity) and correlating the scores of the versions (criterion validity)., Methods: We included Brazilian volunteers, aged ≥ 18 years, with patellofemoral pain (PFP) for at least 3 months. We used the confirmatory factor analysis and considered the following fit indices: chi-square/degrees of freedom (DF), comparative fit index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis index (TLI), root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA). We considered the structure with the lowest values of the Akaike information criterion (AIC), sample size adjusted Bayesian information criterion (SABIC), and assessed criterion validity using Pearson correlation coefficient (r) to correlate the long and short versions., Results: The study included 101 participants, mostly women (65.3%), young adults (~ 31 years old), overweight (BMI > 25 kg/m 2 ), incomplete higher education (37.6%), and physically active (64.4%). The original 1-domain, 13-item structure showed adequate fit indices (chi-square/GL < 3.00, TLI and CFI > 0.90, and RMSEA < 0, 08). However, items 11 and 12 had a factorial load of less than 0.23. Therefore, we excluded items 11 and 12 and found adequate fit indices (chi-square/GL < 3.00, TLI and CFI > 0.90, and RMSEA < 0, 08) and lower AIC and SABIC values. We observed a correlation coefficient above the acceptable cutoff of 0.70 (r = 0.966, p-value < 0.001) between the versions., Conclusion: The 11-item AKPS (without items 11 and 12) is the version with the most adequate internal structure and correlates satisfactorily with the long version of the instrument., (© 2024. Background: Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire for general pain (RMDQ-g) is an instrument adapted to assess disability in patients with pain in any region of the body., Objective: To perform the structural and criterion validity of the RMDQ-g in Brazilian patients with chronic pain., Design: A cross-sectional study., Methods: We included native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese, of both sexes, aged ≥18 years, with pain for at least 3 months in any region of the body. Participants eligible for the study responded to an online form containing personal and clinical data, and assessment instruments. We used the confirmatory factor analysis and considered the following fit indices: chi-square/degree of freedom (DF), comparative fit index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis index (TLI), root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA). In the comparison between models, we considered the structure with the lowest values of the Akaike information criterion (AIC) and sample-size adjusted Bayesian information criterion (SABIC). We assessed criterion validity via Spearman's correlation coefficient (rho) to correlate the long and short versions., Results: The study consisted of 297 participants with chronic pain. The main sites of pain were the lumbar region (40.7%), thoracic (21.5%), and neck (19.5%). Mean pain intensity was greater than 5 points. The 24-item long version and the 15-item short version had adequate fit indices (chi-square/DF ≤ 1.77, CFI ≥0.97, TLI ≥0.96, and RMSEA ≤0.05). However, when comparing structures, the short version was the most appropriate because it had the lowest values of AIC (2562.05) and SABIC (2577.72). Background: Considering the ability of the health and self-management in diabetes questionnaire (HASMID-10) to verify the impact of self-management on diabetes, we highlight its relevance to scientific research and clinical applicability. However, to date, no study has been conducted to scientifically support its use in other languages., Objective: To translate, cross-culturally adapt, and validate the HASMID-10 into the Brazilian Portuguese., Design and Setting: A translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and validation study conducted at Ceuma University., Methods: Study was conducted in accordance with the Guidelines for the Process of Cross-Cultural Adaptation of Self-Report Measures and Consensus-based Standards for the Selection of Health Measurement Instruments. We included participants of both sexes diagnosed with diabetes, aged between 18 and 64 years, and without cognitive deficits or any other limitations that would prevent them from answering the questionnaire. We assessed participants using the problem areas in diabetes (PAID) scale and HASMID-10. We assessed reliability using a test-retest model with a 7-day interval between assessments. We used intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), 95% confidence interval (CI), standard error of measurement (SEM), minimum detectable difference (MDD), Spearman correlation coefficient, and floor and ceiling effects., Results: Sample comprised 116 participants, most of whom were women, overweight, non-practitioners of physical activity, and nonsmokers. We observed significant correlations (P = 0.006; rho = -0.256) between the HASMID-10 and PAID, adequate reliability (ICC = 0.780) and internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.796). No ceiling or floor effects were observed., Conclusion: HASMID-10 has adequate measurement properties and may be used for Brazilians.

Objective: The aim of this study was to measure the reliability, internal consistency, and construct validity of the Kidney Symptom Questionnaire for the Brazilian population., Methods: This is a cross-cultural adaptation and questionnaire validation study. We included native Brazilians of both sex aged>18 years, as well as hypertensive and/or diabetic patients. All participants were assessed using Screening for Occult Renal Disease, EuroQol 5 Dimensions, 36-Item Short Form Survey, and the Kidney Symptom Questionnaire. We used Spearman's coefficient (rho) to measure the correlations between the Kidney Symptom Questionnaire and other instruments; Cronbach's alpha to measure internal consistency; and intraclass correlation coefficient, standard error of measurement, and minimum detectable change to measure test-retest reliability., Results: The sample was formed by 121 adult participants, mostly female, with systemic arterial hypertension and/or diabetes mellitus. We found excellent reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient≥0.978), adequate internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha≥0.860), and adequate construct validity on the Kidney Symptom Questionnaire domains; besides, we observed significant correlations between the Kidney Symptom Questionnaire and other instruments., Conclusion: The Brazilian version of the Kidney Symptom Questionnaire has adequate measurement properties to assess chronic/occult kidney disease in patients who do not require renal replacement therapy.

Objective: To propose a short version of the lower extremity functional scale (LEFS), to compare our short version with the different structures proposed for the LEFS by the specialized literature, and to verify the criterion validity of the best structure of the LEFS identified in our study., Design: Cross-sectional observational study., Setting: Physiotherapy clinics., Participants: We included 140 patients with lower limb dysfunction (N=140)., Interventions: None., Main Outcome Measures: We used confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), χ 2 /degree of freedom (DF), comparative fit index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis index (TLI), root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA), standardized root mean squared residual (SRMR), Akaike information criterion (AIC), and Bayesian information criterion (BIC). The method of reducing the number of items of the LEFS considered the modification indices and factor loadings., Results: The body site most affected by pain was the knee (71.4%), and the most common diagnoses were knee osteoarthritis (55%) and anterior knee pain (11.4%). LEFS reduction generated a 1-dimensional structure of the LEFS with 10 items (LEFS-10). When compared with other structures, the LEFS-10 presented the best fit indices (χ 2 /DF=1.88, CFI=0.975, TLI=0.968, RMSEA=0.079, and SRMR=0.058) and the lowest values of AIC (3287.063) and BIC (3345.896). Background: Psychological factors play an important role in the adequate return of an athlete to sport. Our aim was to perform the translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and validation of the Athlete Fear Avoidance Questionnaire (AFAQ) into Brazilian Portuguese., Methods: We performed the translation and cross-cultural adaptation and evaluated the structural validity, construct validity, and test-retest reliability. In addition to the AFAQ, we used the Numerical Pain Scale (NPS), Pain-Related Catastrophizing Thoughts Scale (PCTS), Self-Estimated Functional Inability because of Pain Questionnaire for athletes (SEFIP-sport), and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). We used the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to analyze the internal structure of the AFAQ. We used the Spearman's correlation coefficient (rho) to determine the magnitude of correlation between the AFAQ and the other instruments. We evaluated the test-retest reliability and internal consistency by means of intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Cronbach's alpha, respectively., Results: No adaptation was necessary to produce the AFAQ version in Brazilian Portuguese. We included 160 participants in the study. We identified the one-dimensionality of the AFAQ through the EFA with the implementation of parallel analysis (KMO = 0.83, p < 0.001 in Bartlett's Sphericity test). In construct validity, the magnitudes of correlation between the AFAQ and the other instruments ranged from 0.257 to 0.548. Background: The Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI) is a measuring instrument for pain and disability in patients with shoulder dysfunction. However, its structure is controversial (ie, 1 or 2 domains)., Purpose: To investigate the structural validity of the Brazilian version of the SPADI in patients with chronic shoulder pain., Study Design: Cross-sectional study., Methods: Brazilian Portuguese speakers of both genders aged 18 years or older with shoulder pain for at least 90 days (chronic) were included in this study. The structure of the SPADI was assessed by means of exploratory factor analysis with the implementation of parallel analysis and by confirmatory factor analysis. For the latter, the following goodness-of-fit indices were considered: root mean square error of approximation with 90% confidence interval, comparative fit index, Tucker-Lewis index, standardized root mean square residual, and chi-square/degrees of freedom., Results: A total of 103 participants were included in the study. The original version of the SPADI with 2 domains and 13 items showed high covariance between domains (0.98), suggesting one-dimensionality. After exploratory factor analysis with the implementation of parallel analysis, one-dimensionality was found in the SPADI. Comparing models with 1 and 2 domains by means of confirmatory factor analysis, both presented adequate values (chi-square/degrees of freedom < 3; comparative fit index and Tucker-Lewis index > 0.90; root mean square error of approximation and standardized root mean square residual < 0.08). Study Design: A questionnaire validity study., Objectives: To perform the translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and analysis of the measurement properties of the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Spinal Cord Injury Pain Instrument (SCIPI) for the screening of neuropathic pain in spinal cord injury., Setting: Neurorehabilitation hospital in north-eastern Brazil., Methods: We performed the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the SCIPI. The pre-final version was applied in 10 patients with spinal cord injury sequelae and pain report. The final version of the SCIPI was applied to 100 patients. The measurement properties evaluated were structural validity, test-retest reliability, internal consistency, construct validity, and diagnostic accuracy., Results: None of the items in the pre-final version of the SCIPI had any comprehension problems. The one-dimensional structure of the final version of the SCIPI was adequate. There were significant correlations between the SCIPI and the Douleur Neuropathique 4 (rho = 0.546), as well as adequate test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.89, kappa ≥ 0.79), internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha ≥ 0.76), and diagnostic accuracy (area under the curve = 0.860)., Conclusion: The Brazilian version of the SCIPI presents measurement properties that are suitable for measuring neuropathic pain related to spinal cord injury., (© 2022. Background: Structural validity refers to the degree to which the scores of a questionnaire or scale are an adequate reflection of the construct to be measured. The aim of this study was to perform the analysis of the structural validity of the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Quebec Back Pain Disability Scale (QBPDS), and Bournemouth Questionnaire (BQ) in Brazilian respondents with chronic low back pain., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted. The sample was composed by respondents with non-specific chronic low back pain (score ≥3 points on the 11-point Numerical Pain Rating Scale). The internal structure (number of domains and items) of the Brazilian versions of the RMDQ, the ODI, the QBPDS, and the BQ were analyzed by the confirmatory factor analysis., Results: Two hundred and twenty-two patients were included. Most of the sample consisted of women and overweight. The RMDQ and ODI have a one-dimensional structure and acceptable values for all confirmatory factor analysis fit indices. The QBPDS with 4 domains and 20 items showed the best values of the fit indices. In addition, we did not identify an internal structure for the BQ supported by the confirmatory factor analysis., Conclusion: The ODI and RMDQ present valid internal structure with 1 domain (disability). The QBPDS has a valid internal structure with 4 domains (rest, prolonged postures, ambulation/reach, and bending/carrying). Objective: This study aimed to validate the internal structure of the Brazilian version of the Baecke Habitual Physical Activity Questionnaire., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with individuals over 18 years old of both sexes, with Brazilian Portuguese as their native language. The structure of the Baecke Habitual Physical Activity Questionnaire was tested by confirmatory factor analysis. The model fit was evaluated by the following indices: root mean square error of approximation, comparative fit index, Tucker-Lewis index, standardized root mean square residual, and χ²/degrees of freedom. We used the Akaike information criterion and Bayesian information criterion to compare different structures of the Baecke Habitual Physical Activity Questionnaire., Results: A total of 241 individuals participated in this study. The original structure of the Baecke Habitual Physical Activity Questionnaire with 16 items and 3 domains was compared to a structure with 14 items and 3 domains. The internal structure of the Baecke Habitual Physical Activity Questionnaire with 14 items showed better fit indices and lower Akaike information criterion and Bayesian information criterion values., Conclusion: The best internal structure of the Brazilian version of the Baecke Habitual Physical Activity Questionnaire in adults presents 3 domains and 14 items.

Objective: To evaluate the measurement properties of the Brazilian version of the Copenhagen Neck Functional Disability Scale (CNFDS) in patients with chronic neck pain., Methods: One hundred and five patients were included in the study. The structural validity of the CNFDS was assessed by exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis with the following fit indices: chi-square divided by degrees of freedom (chi-square/df), root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA), comparative fit index (CFI), and Tucker-Lewis index (TLI). To test the construct validity, the CNFDS score was correlated with the Numerical Pain Rating Scale, the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia, the Pain-Related Catastrophizing Thoughts Scale, and Neck Disability Index (NDI). A subsample of 43 patients filled the CNFDS at two different times, and test-retest reliability was measured using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM), and minimum detectable change (MDC). The internal consistency of the CNFDS was analyzed by Cronbach's alpha., Results: CNFDS presented a unidimensional structure, with goodness of fit indices: chi-square/df = 1.37, CFI = 0.94, TLI = 0.93, RMSEA = 0.059. The CNFDS showed satisfactory results of reliability (ICC = 0.93) and internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.84). The SEM was 1.72 and the MDC was 4.76. The CNFDS showed a high correlation with the NDI (rho = 0.718) and a low correlation with the other instruments. There were no floor and ceiling effects., Conclusion: The Brazilian version of the CNFDS with a one-dimensional structure and 15 items has adequate measurement properties., (© 2021. Objective: The purpose of this study was to translate, cross-culturally adapt, and validate the Upper Limb Functional Index (ULFI) into Brazilian Portuguese (ULFI-Br)., Methods: The translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the ULFI was performed according to international recommendations. The ULFI-Br was applied to 190 patients with chronic upper limb musculoskeletal disorders to verify structural validity. The QuickDASH, the SF-36 and a Numerical Pain Scale (NPS) were completed by 180 patients to assess construct validity using the Spearman correlation (ρ). The internal structure of the ULFI-Br was evaluated by exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis with fit indices chi-square/degrees of freedom (DF), Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA), Comparative Fit Index (CFI) and Tucker Lewis Index (TLI). A subsample of 51 patients was used to assess test-retest reliability using the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM) and minimum detectable change at the 90th percentile (MDC 90 ). Internal consistency was assessed by Cronbach's alpha (α). Floor and ceiling effects were also assessed., Results: Factor analysis identified an uni-dimensional structure with acceptable fit indices (RMSEA = 0.063, CFI = 0.918, TLI = 0.910). The ULFI-Br showed excellent reliability (ICC = 0.909) and adequate internal consistency (α = 0.897). The SEM was 6.11% and the MDC 90 was 14.26%. The ULFI-Br demonstrated high correlation with the QuickDASH (ρ = -0.721), and moderate to low correlation with other questionnaires. There were no floor or ceiling effects., Conclusion: The ULFI-Br showed adequate measurement properties in patients with chronic upper limb musculoskeletal disorders indicating its suitability for use as a measure of upper limb functional status in Brazil., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the reliability and construct validity of the Self-Estimated Functional Inability because of Pain questionnaire for workers in a sample of Brazilian workers with musculoskeletal pain., Methods: This is a questionnaire validation study. Workers with musculoskeletal pain were included. Besides the Self-Estimated Functional Inability because of Pain questionnaire for workers, we used the following instruments to perform construct validity: the Work Ability Index and the Numerical Pain Rating Scale. A subsample answered the Self-Estimated Functional Inability because of Pain questionnaire for workers in two moments to calculate reliability by means of the intraclass correlation coefficient and internal consistency by means of the Cronbach's alpha., Results: A total of 190 Brazilian workers were included. Regarding the construct validity, we observed a correlation with magnitude above 0.50 between the Self-Estimated Functional Inability because of Pain questionnaire for workers and the Numerical Pain Rating Scale, given that these two instruments have similarity in the construct, and correlations above 0.30 between the Self-Estimated Functional Inability because of Pain questionnaire for workers and the domains 2, 3, and 4 of the Work Ability Index. Regarding reliability, we observed adequate reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient=0.864) and internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha=0.807)., Conclusion: The Self-Estimated Functional Inability because of Pain questionnaire for workers is a reliable and valid instrument to be used in Brazilian workers with musculoskeletal pain.

Objective: This study aimed to translate, adapt, and analyze the reliability of the Workplace Sitting Breaks Questionnaire (SITBRQ) for use in Brazil., Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. The translation and cross-cultural adaptation were conducted considering the following six phases: translation, synthesis of translations, back translation, analysis by a committee of experts, test of the pre-final version, and final version. We included workers aged 18 years or above, both genders, and able to understand, read, and write in Brazilian Portuguese. The final version was applied to workers in two moments (i.e., test and retest), with an interval of 7 days, for reliability calculation., Results: In the translation and cross-cultural adaptation phase, the pre-final version was applied to a sample of 35 workers. For item a of the SITBRQ, there was 100% understanding by respondents, while item b was understood by 94.28%. The reliability phase was conducted with 115 workers. For both items, almost perfect was identified with kappa >0.81., Conclusions: The SITBRQ version into Brazilian Portuguese has adequate adaptation and excellent values of reliability.

Objective: The main aim of this study was to evaluate the structural validity of the Brazilian version of the Japanese Orthopedic Association Back Pain Evaluation Questionnaire (JOABPEQ)., Methods: Individuals with chronic low back pain were included. The data collection of the study occurred by means of online platform. Confirmatory factor analysis was performed. The theoretical version proposed for the JOABPEQ with five domains was tested. The following indices were considered to verify the fit of the model: comparative fit index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis index (TLI), root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA), and chi-square/degrees of freedom (DF)., Results: The final sample consisted of 175 volunteers, mostly women (68%), adults (mean age of 28.98 years), lean (mean body mass index of 25 kg/m2), with incomplete higher education, single, with mean of pain chronicity of 61.50 months and mean of pain intensity of 6.78 points on the Numeric Pain Scale. Regarding the structure of the JOABPEQ, the original version with five domains was adequate: chi-square/DF=1.52, CFI=0.954, TLI=0.948, and RMSEA=0.055. The factorial load ranges from 0.41 to 0.90., Conclusions: This study confirms the structure of JOABPEQ with 5 domains (low back pain, lumbar function, walking ability, social life function, and mental health) and 25 items in individuals with chronic low back pain.

Background: Growth of uterus, enlargement of breasts and weight gain result from the development and growth of the fetus during pregnancy. The posture and the displacement of the center of gravity change., Objective: Correlate baropodometric variables with low back pain in pregnant women in the third trimester of pregnancy., Methods: This is a cross-sectional analytical study conducted in São Luís (MA, Brazil). For data collection, we used a form containing sociodemographic and clinical data, Oswestry Disability Questionnaire for disability evaluation of the lumbar spine, Numerical Rating Scale to measure pain intensity, and baropodometric evaluation., Results: Twenty-five pregnant women took part in the study. There was a significant and positive correlation (r = 0.404, p = 0.045) between functional disability and hindfoot pressure and a significant and negative correlation (r = -0.404, p = 0.045) between functional disability and plantar pressure in the forefoot of the right foot. Background: The original structure of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) has been contested in several languages., Objective: To assess the structural validity of the Brazilian version of WOMAC among patients with knee osteoarthritis., Design and Setting: Structural validity study conducted at physiotherapy clinics and primary healthcare units., Methods: The study included males and females aged 40 to 80 years who were all native Brazilian Portuguese speakers, with knee pain in the previous six months and a diagnosis of knee osteoarthritis. We used exploratory factor analysis (EFA) followed by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with implementation of a polychoric matrix and the robust diagonally weighted least squares (RDWLS) extraction method. The adequacy of the model was assessed using the following fit indices: root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA), comparative fit index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis index (TLI), standardized root mean square residual (SRMR) and chi-square/degree of freedom (DF)., Results: 203 patients with knee osteoarthritis were included. The model proposed in this study with two factors, i.e. "pain" (items 1, 2, 3 and 4) and "physical function" (items 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 19, 21 and 22), showed adequate fit indices in CFA: chi-square/DF = 1.30; CFI = 0.976; TLI = 0.970; RMSEA = 0.039; and SRMR = 0.070. The factorial loads ranged from 0.68 to 0.76 for the "pain" domain and 0.44 to 0.62 for the "physical function" domain., Conclusion: The Brazilian version of WOMAC with two domains, i.e. "pain" (four items) and "physical function" (eight items), presents the best structure.

Background: Self-Estimated Functional Inability because of Pain (SEFIP) is a questionnaire specifically designed to measure musculoskeletal pain or discomfort., Objective: To perform translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the SEFIP for dancers (SEFIP-dance), for use in Brazilian Portuguese. In addition, as a secondary objective, we adapted the translated version of SEFIP-dance for use among athletes or exercise practitioners (SEFIP-sport)., Design and Setting: Questionnaire translation and cross-cultural adaptation study conducted at a public university., Methods: The Brazilian version of the SEFIP-dance questionnaire was developed following the processes of translation (involving two translators with Brazilian Portuguese as their mother tongue and fluency in English), backtranslation (involving two translators with English as their mother tongue and fluency in Brazilian Portuguese), committee review and pre-testing. SEFIP-sport was developed following the processes of content and face validation., Results: SEFIP-dance was applied to 30 dancers, of mean age 22.38 years (standard deviation [SD] = 3.41), among whom 14 were men (46.66%). The participants understood 100% of the SEFIP-dance items and alternatives. SEFIP-sport was applied to 30 athletes or physical exercise practitioners, of mean age 25.09 years (SD = 8.93), among whom 25 were men (86.33%). The participants understood 100% of the -SEFIP-sport items and alternatives., Conclusion: The Brazilian Portuguese versions of SEFIP-dance, translated and cross-culturally adapted for dancers, and SEFIP-sport, adapted for athletes or physical exercise practitioners, were shown to have adequate levels of understanding.

Background: Type 2 diabetes, also known non-insulin-dependent diabetes, is the most prevalent type of the disease and involves defects in the secretion and action of insulin. The aim of the proposed study is to evaluate the efficacy of pre-exercise low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on muscle performance of the quadriceps femoris in individuals with type 2 diabetes., Methods/design: A double-blind, randomized, controlled clinical trial will be carried out in two treatment phases. In the first phase, quadriceps muscle performance will be evaluated using an isokinetic dynamometer and the levels of creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase (biochemical markers of muscle damage) will be determined. The participants will then be allocated to four LLLT groups through a randomization process using opaque envelopes: Group A (4 Joules), Group B (6 Joules), Group C (8 Joules) and Group D (0 Joules; placebo). Following the administration of LLLT, the participants will be submitted to an isokinetic eccentric muscle fatigue protocol involving the quadriceps muscle bilaterally. Muscle performance and biochemical markers of muscle damage will be evaluated again immediately after as well as 24 and 48 hours after the experimental protocol. One week after the last evaluation the second phase will begin, during which Groups A, B and C will receive the LLLT protocol that achieved the best muscle performance in phase 1 for a period of 4 weeks. At the end of this period, muscle performance will be evaluated again. The protocol for this study is registered with the World Health Organization under Universal Trial Number U1111-1146-7109., Discussion: The purpose of this randomized clinical trial is to evaluate the efficacy of pre-exercise LLLT on the performance of the quadriceps muscle (peak torque, total muscle work, maximum power and fatigue index - normalized by body mass) in individuals with DM-2. The study will support the practice of evidence-based to the use of LLLT in improving muscle performance in Individuals with DM-2. Data will be published after the study is completed.

Objective: The purpose of the study was to analyze the upper trapezius muscle temperature using thermography in women with and without neck pain., Methods: Thirty-six female university students were classified through the Neck Disability Index (NDI) into 2 groups: the neck pain group comprised 18 volunteers diagnosed with mild disability, and the control group, 18 healthy volunteers. All subjects were submitted to evaluation by thermography, which registered the skin surface temperature of the upper bilateral trapezius muscle. Student t test and Mann-Whitney U test were used for the comparison between the groups, and the Spearman correlation coefficient was used for the appropriate correlations between the NDI score and the temperature values. A significance level of 5% was set., Results: No significant difference was found between the groups regarding the temperature values of the upper left (P = .565) and right (P = .917) trapezius muscles, as well as in comparisons of temperature asymmetry (P = .542). In addition, no significant association was found between the study variables (P > .05)., Conclusion: Women with neck pain, diagnosed with mild disability by NDI, did not present with reduction or asymmetry of upper trapezius muscle temperature when compared with a group without neck pain., (Copyright © 2012 National University of Health Sciences.
