Co-occurrence a correlation profiles are driven by different factors (exogenous and endogenous) and drawing a profile of association between species based on co-occurrence, without assessing how these species vary in terms of ecological niche can lead to wrong conclusions. The objective was to determine the co-occurrence and correlation patterns of phytophagous insects in canola crop and to evaluate how these patterns varied according to the crop stage (phenology-biotic) and sowing times (agricultural practice-abiotic). We found that the patterns of co-occurrence and correlation between species were reflections of population variations due to the phenology and sowing times of canola. Variations in the multi-species abundance matrix were influenced by mean air temperature and accumulated rainfall. The main species associated with canola in southern Brazil, in terms of abundance, were P. xylostella, D. speciosa, and N. viridula. These species were mostly negatively associated. When evaluating their population variations, we found that they explore different temporal niches, whether in terms of phenology or sowing times. Finally, we demonstrate empirically that despite being important, association patterns based on co-occurrence and correlation should be interpreted in light of the understanding of patterns of niche exploitation and temporal variation of species., (© 2024. Cerambycidae beetles limit production and establishment of forest and fruit trees. Oncideres cervina Thomson, 1868 (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is one of the most important species. The objective was to record O. cervina girdling branches of Persea americana Mill. (Lauraceae) for the first time, check the number of oviposition incisions (Noi) as a function of the diameter of branch sections, period of emergence, and describe the larval-pupal chamber. Individuals of O. cervina were observed, for the first time, in P. americana orchards in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The middle section of branches (40-60 cm interval) had higher number of incisions. Girdled branches with a diameter of 40-50 mm had higher number of them. Adults emerged from November through January. Larval-pupal boreholes had diameters between 9 and 11 mm, and average tunnel length was 28 mm, with a mean volume of consumed wood of 4.3 mL. This information is useful for establishing integrated pest management practices against O. cervina in P. americana since this crop has a high added value and can be significantly compromised by attack by Cerambycidae beetles.

Aphids are worldwide pests, and in South America, they harm many crops including winter cereals. In the 1970s, the rapid expansion of the wheat crop area in the subtropical region of South America led to growth of aphid populations. The wide availability of food, associated with the low effectiveness of natural biological control, put the aphid populations out of balance, requiring intensive use of insecticides. At the end of the decade, biological control programs of aphids were initiated in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile, including the importation of natural enemies (mainly parasitoids), followed by their laboratory rearing and field release. With decreased use of highly hazardous pesticides, biological control by introduced and already-present parasitoid species was enhanced. The program was very successful and aphid populations have been kept at low levels. This review article explores the history of this program and its current status. In modern day agriculture, with intense multiple cropping systems, adoption of several conservation practices, and increased cultivation of wheat in tropical regions, we discuss ways to keep this program effective to maintain aphid populations on cereal crops at low acceptable levels through employing biological control agents., (© 2022. In different parts of the world, aphid populations and their natural enemies are influenced by landscapes and climate. In the Neotropical region, few long-term studies have been conducted, maintaining a gap for comprehension of the effect of meteorological variables on aphid population patterns and their parasitoids in field conditions. This study describes the general patterns of oscillation in cereal winged aphids and their parasitoids, selecting meteorological variables and evaluating their effects on these insects. Aphids exhibit two annual peaks, one in summer-fall transition and the other in winter-spring transition. For parasitoids, the highest annual peak takes place during winter and a second peak occurs in winter-spring transition. Temperature was the principal meteorological regulator of population fluctuation in winged aphids and parasitoids during the year. The favorable temperature range is not the same for aphids and parasitoids. For aphids, temperature increase resulted in population growth, with maximum positive effect at 25°C. Temperature also positively influenced parasitoid populations, but the growth was asymptotic around 20°C. Although rainfall showed no regulatory function on aphid seasonality, it influenced the final number of insects over the year. The response of aphids and parasitoids to temperature has implications for trophic compatibility and regulation of their populations. Such functions should be taken into account in predictive models.

Stink bugs (Pentatomidae) are among the main entomological problems in the international farming. Their ability in using alternative plants (refuges) during the off-season is one of the reasons that led them to the status of key pests in several crops. Like other insect species, stink bugs are subject to atmospheric variations. Therefore, the objective of this experiment was to evaluate the abundance, the co-occurrence, and its variations according to the weather in the off-season. The work was conducted between 2014 and 2018, in the municipality of Cruz Alta, state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil. Every year, refuges formed by Poaceae and located around the cropped area were evaluated in the second fortnight of June, corresponding to the beginning of the winter solstice. Atmospheric variables corresponding to the evaluation period were used to explain the variation in the populations. In short, our results demonstrated interannual variations in the population abundance of stink bugs in the evaluated refuges. We also found variations in the co-occurrence between species. Finally, we demonstrate the trend in the increase in these refuges in years with cold and dry off-seasons.
