Vitamin A is an essential micronutrient, especially during pregnancy. We aimed to assess the prevalence of vitamin A deficiency in Brazilian women of childbearing age. We conducted a systematic review with meta-analysis of studies that assessed vitamin A deficiency in women of childbearing age following the registered protocol (CRD42020171856). Independent peer researchers selected the studies retrieved from MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus and other sources. Data from the eligible studies were extracted in pairs and assessed for methodological quality. The prevalence of vitamin A deficiency (< 0·70 µmol/l or <0·20 µg/dl) and 95 % CI was combined by meta-analysis, and heterogeneity was estimated by I 2. Out of 3610 screened records, thirty-two studies were included, which assessed 12 577 women from 1965 to 2017, mostly in maternity hospitals. Main limitations of the studies were in sample frame (30/32) and sampling method (29/32). Deficiency occurred in 13 % (95 % CI 9·4, 17·2 %; I² = 97 %) of all women and was higher in pregnant women (16·1 %; 95 % CI 5·6, 30·6 %; I² = 98 %) than non-pregnant women (12·3 %; 95 % CI 8·4, 16·8 %; I² = 96 %). The prevalence increased according to the decade, from 9·5 % (95 % CI 1·9–21·6 %; I² = 98 %) up to 1990, 10·8 % (95 % CI 7·9, 14·2 %; I² = 86 %) in the 2000s and 17·8 % (95 % CI 8·7, 29·0 %; I² = 98 %) in the 2010s. Over 10 % of Brazilian women in childbearing age were deficient in vitamin A. Higher prevalence was observed in pregnant women, and deficiency seemed to be increasing over the decades. Low representativeness of the studies, mainly based on convenience sampling that included pregnant, postpartum, lactating and non-pregnant women, as well as high heterogeneity, limits the findings. Objective: To estimate the prevalence of childhood obesity in Brazil by means of a systematic review of representative studies. Sources: We searched for population-based studies that assessed obesity in Brazilian children aged < 10 years in MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus and other sources up to September, 2019. Paired researchers selected studies, extracted data and assessed the quality of these studies. Meta-analysis of prevalence and confidence interval (95% CI) was calculated, weighted by the population sizes using Freeman-Tukey double-arccosine transformation. Heterogeneity (I2) and publication bias were investigated by meta-regression and Egger's test, respectively. Summary of the findings: 53 studies were included (n = 122,395), which were held from 1986 to 2015 and limited mainly due to inadequate response rates. Prevalence of obesity in the threedecade period was of 8.2% ([95% CI]: 8.1-8.4%, I² = 98.5%). Higher prevalence was observed in boys (9.7% [9.4-9.9%], I² = 97.4%) than girls (7.3% [7.1-7.5%], I² = 96.1%). Prevalence increased according to the decade (1990: 6.5% [6.0-7.0 %], I² = 96.8%; 2000: 7.9% [7.7-8.0 %], I² = 98.8%; 2010: 12.0% [11.5-12.6 %], I2 = 95.8%), and Brazilian region (Northeast: 6.4% [6.2-6.7%], I² = 98.1%; North: 6.7% [6.3-7.2%], I² = 98.8%; Southeast:10.6% [10.2-11.0%], I² = 98.2%; South: 10.1 [9.7-10.4%], I² = 97.7%). Heterogeneity was affected by age and region (p < 0.05) and publication bias was discarded (p = 0.746). Conclusion: For every 100 Brazilian children, over eight had obesity in the three-decade period and 12 in each 100 had childhood obesity in more recent estimates. The scope of this study was to estimate the prevalence of excess weight and a sedentary lifestyle among Brazilian students between 13 and 17 years of age and investigate the magnitude of the socioeconomic inequalities related to these outcomes. A cross-sectional study was carried out based on data from the National School Health Survey (PeNSE) conducted in 2015. Inequalities were evaluated using the Absolute and Relative Index of Inequality. The prevalence of excess weight in Brazil was 24.2%, ranging from 20.7% in the Northeast Region to 27.8% in the Southern Region. The prevalence of a sedentary lifestyle in Brazil was 67.8%, ranging from 61.8 % in the North Region to 70.3% in the Southeast Region. The direct and positive association between better socioeconomic conditions and the prevalence of excess weight and a sedentary lifestyle indicate health inequities in Brazil. The results of this study point to the need to restructure and reinforce public policies directed at adolescents, which should have as guidelines the promotion of a healthy lifestyle and the reduction of health inequities. O objetivo deste estudo foi estimar a prevalência de excesso de peso e sedentarismo em escolares brasileiros na faixa etária de 13 a 17 anos, e investigar a magnitude das desigualdades socioeconômicas relacionadas a esses desfechos. Realizou-se um estudo transversal com base nos dados da Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde do Escolar (PeNSE) do ano 2015. As desigualdades foram avaliadas por meio dos Índices Absoluto e Relativo de Desigualdade. A prevalência de excesso de peso no Brasil foi 24,2%, variou de 20,7% na região Nordeste a 27,8% na região Sul. Já a prevalência de sedentarismo no Brasil foi 67,8%, variou de 61,8% na região Norte a 70,3% na região Sudeste. A associação direta e positiva entre melhores condições socioeconômicas e as prevalências de excesso de peso e sedentarismo indicam iniquidades em saúde existentes no Brasil. Os resultados do presente estudo apontam a necessidade de reestruturação e fortalecimento das políticas públicas voltadas aos adolescentes, que devem ter como diretrizes a promoção de estilos de vida saudáveis e a redução das iniquidades em saúde. In Brazil, there are approximately 9.7 million inhabitants who are deaf or hard of hearing. Moreover, about 30% of the Brazilian deaf community is illiterate in Brazilian Portuguese due to difficulties to offer deaf children an inclusive environment based on bilingual education. Currently, the prevailing teaching practice depends heavily on verbal language and on written material, making the inclusion of the deaf a challenging task. This paper presents the author's approach for tackling this problem and improving deaf students' accessibility to written material in order to help them master Brazilian Portuguese as a second language. We describe an ongoing project aimed at developing an automatic Brazilian Portuguese-to-Libras translation system that presents the translated content via an animated virtual human, or avatar. The paper describes the methodology adopted to compile a source language corpus having the deaf student needs in central focus. It also describes the construction of a parallel Brazilian Portuguese/Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) corpus based on motion capture technology. The envisioned translation architecture includes the definition of an Intermediate Language to drive the signing avatar. This article reflects on the therapeutic culture that Brazilian anonymous support groups produce – especially in MADA (Women Who Love Too Much Anonymous) – and on contemporary feminist strategies and forms of action in digital networks, as pedagogical instances of emotional learning and social (re)organization of romantic suffering. Objective: To evaluate whether total bacterial count in cervicovaginal fluid is associated with failure of metronidazole therapy for bacterial vaginosis.Methods: In a cross-sectional study, women attending a primary health center in Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil, for routine cervical screening between September 2012 and October 2013 were enrolled. Women who tested positive for bacterial vaginosis (Nugent classification) were offered oral metronidazole. Women who completed metronidazole treatment and an equal number of control women with normal vaginal flora at initial screening were included in analyses of total bacterial count, assessed by flow cytometry of cervicovaginal fluid samples.Results: Of 287 women who enrolled, 49 were excluded because they tested positive for trichomoniasis, chlamydial endocervicitis, gonorrhea, or candidiasis. Among the remaining 238, 85 (35.7%) had bacterial vaginosis. Among 36 women evaluated at follow-up, 23 (63.9%) had successfully restored lactobacilli-dominant flora, 12 (33.3%) had persistent bacterial vaginosis, and 1 (2.8%) had vaginal candidiasis (excluded from flow cytometry). Total bacterial count did not differ between 35 women with bacterial vaginosis and 35 with normal vaginal flora (P=0.62). Total bacterial count did not differ at enrollment between women who went on to have persistent bacterial vaginosis and those who had successful treatment (P=0.78).Conclusion: Failure of oral metronidazole therapy for bacterial vaginosis was not associated with total bacterial count in cervicovaginal fluid. The present article seeks to understand the uses of the internet as a space for action and reflection among feminist groups in the Brazilian scene. It takes as its focus the relationships between new feminist generations and esthetics and the social space of the internet. Several feminist groups have emphasized the use of the internet and social networks as relevant platforms for organization, news and political expression. I thus take as my object of analysis one of the most important blogs in the Brazilian context: Blogueiras Feministas (Feminist Bloggers -- BF), seeking to use this as an ethnographic resource in order to understand the set of actors and collectives working within this feminist scenario, as well as the spaces and social, political and cultural strategies that appear within it. Objectives.to examine the Food and Nutrition Surveillance System (Sisvan) as a tool for monitoring the National Strategy for Healthy Complementary Nutrition (ENPACS) in the 40 municipalities overseen by the Belo Horizonte regional superintendent for health (SRS-BH). Methods: a descriptive study was carried out involving all children aged under two being accompanied by the Sisvan Web between 2008 and 2011. The coverage of the Sisvan Web was calculated by dividing the number of children aged under two years accompanied by the Sisvan Web by the total population for the same age group. A questionnaire relating to the technical references of the Sisvan of the municipalities under investigation was sent to collect information on the functioning of the Sisvan. Results: the coverage of the Sisvan Web, in all municipalities, varied from 4.3% (2008) to 10.7% (2011). The questionnaire was answered by 38 municipalities in the SRS-BH, 31.6% of whom reported using data from the Sisvan Web system as a basis for nutritional interventions. Conclusions: the study identified low coverage, poor utilization of data and the need to improve the Sisvan, in order to generate consistent information on nutrition and food among children aged under two years, thereby making it appropriate for monitoring of the ENPACS. The Atlantic Forest biome is a biodiversity hotspot with only 13% of its native vegetation cover remaining in Brazil. Forest restoration is an important process for the re-establishment of biodiversity and the preservation of water resources in degraded areas, like riparian forests. Monitoring is an essential step of restoration, because the periodic evaluation of indicators allows researchers to analyze the effectiveness of applied techniques. This study aimed to evaluate the environmental quality of a seedling planting (active restoration) in a Permanent Preservation Area (PPA) of the Southeast Atlantic Forest biome, through a monitoring protocol, within a year. More specifically, we aimed to investigate the following questions: (1) do some ecological groups or families grow more than others? and (2) is the cover of exotic grasses negatively influencing forest regeneration? Data were collected during November 2017 and April (interval represents five months of wet season) and October 2018 (six months of dry season). Eight plots of 9 × 18 m were established and all individuals were identified and measured (diameter at ground level (DGL), height (H), and canopy diameter (CD)). Exotic grass cover and richness of regenerating species were also recorded. We registered 119 individuals during the three inventories, distributed in 35 species and 14 families. Results indicate an inverse association between exotic grasses and the presence of recruits in the area. Thus, exotic grass control may be needed while the forest canopy is not closed. A significant growth of individuals in the whole study period, especially during the wet season, was detected. Legumes grew more in trunk and canopy diameter (Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan and Inga vera Willd. subsp. affinis (DC.) T. D. Penn. had the biggest growth, respectively) than non-legumes during wetter months and within a year. Pioneers had greater height increase compared to non-pioneers only during wetter months. Legumes may be important species to be used in other young tropical forest restoration areas. • We test the monophyly of Conchocarpus , subtribe Galipeinae (Rutaceae). • We used morphology and molecular data to infer the phylogeny of the Galipeinae. • Galipeinae (the subtribe Conchocarpus belongs) are monophyletic. • Conchocarpus is polyphyletic and formed by two groups. • Conchocarpus gaudichaudianus group is recognized as a new genus, Dryades. Subtribe Galipeinae (tribe Galipeeae) is the most diverse group of Rutaceae (the orange family) in the Neotropics, with 27 genera and ca. 130 species. The largest genus in the subtribe is Conchocarpus , with ca. 50 species, distributed from Central America to southern Brazil, and is particularly diverse in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The circumscription of the genus was recently changed to accommodate the species of Almeidea. However, even with this inclusion, Conchocarpus did not appear as monophyletic because the position of C. concinnus , which appeared in a clade with the other genera of Galipeinae rather than in the clade with the other species of Conchocarpus. The objective of the present study is to investigate the phylogenetic position of four other species of Conchocarpus (hereafter called " C. gauchaudianus group") that share morphological traits and geographical distribution with C. concinnus suggesting a close phylogenetic affinity. Phylogenetic analyses were based on morphological and molecular data from nuclear regions ITS-1 and ITS-2 as well as plastid regions trnL-trnF and rps-16, and were conducted with parsimony and Bayesian inference as optimization criteria. Results showed Conchocarpus as polyphyletic with its species divided in two clades, one, herein called "the Conchocarpus sensu stricto group," includes the type species C. macrophyllus , and the other "the Conchocarpus gaudichaudianus group" includes C. concinnus. The latter group is here recognized as a new genus, Dryades , the name given by Carl Friederich von Martius (1794–1868) to the Domain of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil, inspired by the tree nymphs in Greek mythology. Floral structure and leaf morphology provided further support to the findings of phylogenetic analysis. A description of the new genus, new combinations, a key to the species of the new genus, discussions of the affinities of the species are also provided, as well as data on the conservation status of the species of Dryades. Additionally, new data on floral structure of C. heterophyllus , C. macrophyllus and C. minutiflorus (all from the Conchocarpus sensu stricto group) are provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
