The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is the most important noctuid pest in the Americas and has recently become an invasive pest in Africa. A detailed record of S. frugiperda's host plants is essential to better understand the biology and ecology of this pest, conduct future studies, and develop Integrated Pest Management programmes. In this study, we collected and systematically arranged the fragmented bibliographic information on S. frugiperda feeding records. Furthermore, we registered new records of host plants for S. frugiperda based on eight years of surveys in Brazil. The literature review and surveys resulted in a total of 353 S. frugiperda larval host plant records belonging to 76 plant families, principally Poaceae (106), Asteraceae (31) and Fabaceae (31). The literature search revealed 274 (77 % of total) bibliographic records, while 82 (23 %) are new records from surveys in Brazil. The new comprehensive and updated host plant list will improve our understanding of pest biology and management, as well as facilitate future studies on this pest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To assess the contemporary prevalence of trachoma in Brazil's non-indigenous population, surveys of those thought to be at greatest risk of disease were conducted., Methods: Rural census tracts of non-indigenous population from nine mesoregions were selected to compose the survey evaluation units (EUs) by considering previously endemic municipalities at greatest risk of trachoma. In each of the nine EUs, we conducted a population-based prevalence survey. Every resident of selected households aged ≥ 1 year was examined for trachomatous inflammation - follicular (TF) and trachomatous trichiasis (TT). Additionally, data were collected on household-level access to water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH) and education., Results: A total of 27,962 individuals were examined across nine EUs. The age-adjusted TF prevalence in 1-9-year-olds was <5% in each EU. The age- and gender-adjusted prevalence of TT unknown to the health system in ≥15-year-olds was <0.2% in eight EUs; in one EU, it was 0.22%. The median number of households surveyed per EU with access to an improved drinking water source within a 30-minute roundtrip of the house was 66%. School attendance was >99% of surveyed children., Conclusions: The prevalence of TF was well below the target for elimination as a public health problem in all EUs. Because EUs surveyed were selected to represent the highest-risk non-indigenous areas of the country, TF prevalence is unlikely to be ≥5% in non-indigenous populations elsewhere. In one EU, the prevalence of TT was above the target threshold for elimination. Further investigation and possibly improvement in TT surgical provision are required in that EU.

Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues are an important source for investigation of dengue virus (DENV) infection, particularly when blood or fresh frozen (FF) samples are unavailable. Histopathologic features and immunohistochemistry may have poor sensitivity and serotype determination is not always possible. Viral RNA genome detection tests are faster and considered the most sensitive technique for this kind of analysis, however, the use of molecular methods applied to FFPE tissues is still limited. The authors applied a single-step multiplex reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) for the investigation of DENV infection and typing to FFPE samples of 32 fatal cases received during the 2019 outbreak that occurred in São Paulo state, Brazil. The authors compared the results with those obtained using FF tissues. Of the 24 cases with both FF and FFPE samples, 22 (91.67%) of the FF and 19 (76.20%) of the FFPE specimens were positive. Two cases (8.33%) tested negative in both types of samples. All 8 cases with only FFPE samples available were positive. The accuracy (87.5%) of the RT-qPCR for DENV in FFPE samples were satisfactory. Although the cycle quantification (Cq) values were significantly higher in these materials (P<0.0001, Wilcoxon signed-rank test) when compared with FF tissues, Spearman's rank coefficient indicated a good correlation between the Cq values from both sample types (P=0.0063; rho=0.576). The market for biological control of insect pests in the world and in Brazil has grown in recent years due to the unwanted ecological and human health impacts of chemical insecticides. Therefore, research on biological control agents for pest management has also increased. For instance, insect viruses have been used to protect crops and forests around the world for decades. Among insect viruses, the baculoviruses are the most studied and used viral biocontrol agent. More than 700 species of insects have been found to be naturally infected by baculoviruses, with 90% isolated from lepidopteran insects. In this review, some basic aspects of baculovirus infection in vivo and in vitro infection, gene content, viral replication will be discussed. Furthermore, we provide examples of the use of insect viruses for biological pest control and recently characterized baculoviruses in Brazil.

This study aimed to evaluate the biotic potential and life table of individuals of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) from different host plants (citrus, corn, and cotton) and Brazilian states (São Paulo, Distrito Federal, and Bahia) in artificial diet, under laboratory conditions (25 ± 1°C, 70 ± 10% RH, 14 h photophase). The longevity, pre-, post- and oviposition periods, fecundity, and fertility of 15 mating pairs per origin were evaluated. We also compared the reproductive parameters of each group of insects (São Paulo (SP), Distrito Federal (DF), and Bahia (BA)), including the net reproductive rate (Ro), mean generation time (T), intrinsic rate of increase (r m ), and finite rate of increase (λ). Microsatellite analysis from individuals collected in different locations and host plants did not show differences among the parental insects. It was verified that parental progeny collected in cotton fields from Bahia had a higher biotic potential, a higher reproductive rate (Ro), and a better fecundity compared to the insects from remaining regions. The life table charts indicate that the highest values for the reproductive parameters of the Bahia progeny are associated with higher specific fertility, particularly in early adulthood. The greatest biotic potential of the Bahia progeny may be due to increased selection pressure from the insecticide used (organophosphate and pyrethroid) on cotton crops compared to that of other crops, as well due to the massive adoption of Bt cotton-producing areas of that state from 2013 outbreaks.
