Despite long-standing interest, the mechanisms driving aquatic macroinvertebrate drift in tropical streams remain poorly understood. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate which environmental metrics drive macroinvertebrate drift in neotropical sky island streams. We evaluated whether altitude, the abundance of food resources, and variations in water quality influenced macroinvertebrate drift density, diversity, richness, and functional feeding groups. An hypothesis was developed to test whether increased altitude, lower food availability (particulate organic matter), and discharge would increase the density, taxonomic richness, and diversity of drifting invertebrates. Nine headwater stream sites were sampled in the rainy and dry seasons in the Espinhaço Meridional Mountain Range (EMMR) of southeast Brazil. Samples were collected using drift nets deployed from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The abundance of food resources was assessed through estimates of coarse (CPOM) and fine (FPOM) particulate organic matter, and primary producers. CPOM availability was an important explanatory variable for Gathering-Collectors and Scrapers, Altitude was important for Shredders and Predators, and Filtering-Collectors were linked to water discharge, suggesting that functional group drift masses were linked to different ecosystem components. Water temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, current velocity, FPOM biomass and microbasin elevation range exerted little influence on macroinvertebrate drift. Regarding taxa composition, this study also found that Baetidae and Leptohyphidae (Ephemeroptera) and Chironomidae and Simuliidae (Diptera) were the most abundant groups drifting. The Mariana disaster, resulting from the rupture of the Fundão tailings storage facility (TSF) in 2015, was a large‐scale environmental disaster that drastically affected the entire channel of the Rio Doce, southeastern Brazil. The disaster produced substantial channel siltation, increased turbidity, riparian damage and a massive fish kill. However, the Rio Doce basin has a long history of environmental degradation, including hydroelectric dams. The latter are major threats to the ichthyofauna because they affect flow regimes, trap sediments and large wood, select generalist species, impair fish migrations and favour non‐native invasive species. In this study, we analysed the effects of the rupture as well as impacts from the construction of a run‐of‐the‐river hydroelectric dam on native and non‐native fish abundances, and species richness and composition in the middle Rio Doce.To do this, we examined fish survey data collected before and after each disturbance upriver of the reservoir, in the reservoir area and downriver of the dam. The data were separated into three temporal intervals: free‐flowing river, post‐filling reservoir and post‐TSF disaster. To assess temporal changes in native and non‐native fish species richness, we used a rarefaction method and tested it with two‐way ANOVA, which also was used to compare fish abundances. To test temporal changes in fish assemblage composition we used a PERMANOVA test.We observed no significant differences in total native or non‐native species richness as a result of the dam or the disaster. However, we did observe increased non‐native individual abundances after the TSF rupture as well as native individual abundances, depending on the location studied. The assemblage composition also changed after dam construction and the TSF rupture, except for the upriver reach after dam construction.We conclude that both the dam and the TSF rupture affected fish assemblages, favouring increased non‐native abundances, and also changed fish assemblage composition.Our results suggest that a century of landscape and riverscape pressures had extirpated the sensitive fishes from the Rio Doce before the TSF rupture. Benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages are used to assess anthropogenic stressors and pressures globally—although considerable spatial and temporal variability in those assemblages occur naturally and in their sampling. We evaluated the effects of an untreated domestic sewage spill on the spatial–temporal occurrence, structure and dynamics of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages, through use of occupancy probability and time series modelling. Our study produced three key results: (1) Site colonization, extirpation, and occupancy probabilities of resistant and sensitive assemblages were not influenced by the predictor variables measured before and after the spill nor between sites. (2) Over time, site occupancy for the proportion of sensitive taxa increased while the proportion of resistant taxa decreased. (3) Artificial substrates reduced natural variability more than Surber sampling of natural substrates, but macroinvertebrate family richness differed over time regardless of sampling device. We conclude that rigorous monitoring and data analyses of benthic bioindicators can be a cost-effective approach for assessing the biotic effects of sewage discharges on neotropical urban streams. Conditions in freshwater ecosystems are responsible for maintaining biodiversity and other ecosystem services. Identifying and understanding how anthropogenic disturbances affect biotic conditions are important steps in rehabilitating and protecting environmental quality. The relative risk, relative extent, and attributable risk approaches are used to determine ecosystem conditions in ecological monitoring programs conducted across large spatial extents. Our study was conducted in the Pandeiros River basin, which is a protected area in Minas Gerais, Brazil, that contains 233 km of mapped streams that were perennial and accessible. Field sampling was conducted in the dry period (April and June 2016) at 40 randomly selected sites. Ten multimetric indices (MMIs), previously determined to be sensitive in this river basin, were calculated. All the physical habitat disturbance metrics were significantly correlated with the MMIs. The risk of finding poor MMI scores was 1.6–1.7 times higher at sites with a high integrated disturbance index (IDI) or local disturbance index (LDI) score. Pasture was the most extensive disturbance, affecting 40.8% of the stream length, followed by 40.1% for low bed stability, 29% for fine substrates (<16 mm), 24.4% for high IDI scores, and 21.7% for high LDI scores. This is useful to know for five reasons: (1) standardized MMIs can assess environmental quality. (2) MMIs clarify that both catchment and local disturbances may represent serious risks to aquatic assemblages. (3) MMIs indicate which disturbances represent the most risk by comparing MMI scores against disturbance scores. (4) MMI risk assessments facilitate choosing the most appropriate mitigation actions. Over 70% of the total channel length in all river basins is formed by low order streams, many of which originate on mountaintops. Headwater streams play fundamental roles in processing and transporting terrestrial and aquatic organic matter, often harboring high biodiversity in bottom leaf patches deposited from riparian vegetation. The objective of this study was to assess the variation in taxonomic composition (measured by beta diversity of aquatic macroinvertebrates) among stream sites located in the Espinhaço Meridional Mountain Range, part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in eastern Brazil. We tested two hypotheses. (a) Taxa turnover is the main reason for differences in aquatic insect assemblages within stream sites; we predicted that turnover would be higher than nestedness in all stream sites. (b) Stream site altitude and catchment elevation range are the main explanatory variables for the differences in beta diversity; we predicted that local stream site variables would account for only minor amounts of variation. In both dry and wet seasons, we sampled twice in two habitat types (five leaf patches in pools and five in riffles) in each of nine stream sites distributed in three different river basins. We computed average pairwise beta diversity among sampling stations and seasons in each stream site by using Jaccard and Bray–Curtis indices, and calculated the percentages of diversity resulting from turnover and nestedness. Finally, we tested the degree that local‐ or catchment‐level predictor variables explained beta diversity. We found that turnover was the main component of beta diversity and that both dissolved oxygen and elevation range best explained Bray–Curtis beta diversity. These results reinforce the importance of leaf patches in montane (sky islands) Neotropical savanna streams as biodiversity hotbeds for macroinvertebrates, and that both local and landscape variables explained beta diversity. Hydropower dams substantially modify lotic ecosystems. Most studies regarding their ecological impacts are based on large dams and provide little information about the far more abundant effects of small hydropower dams. Our aim was to characterize the ecological effects of a small hydropower dam and run‐of‐the‐river reservoir on the structure of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages in the Pandeiros River located in the neotropical savanna of Brazil. We tested the hypothesis that benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages in sites directly affected by the dam and reservoir would show a different taxonomic structure compared with those in free‐flowing sites. We expected to find sensitive native species associated with the free‐flowing sites, whereas resistant and non‐native invasive taxa were expected in impounded sites. We also explored associations between the presence of native and non‐native invasive taxa to each habitat type. We found that the structure of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages was significantly different between free‐flowing and impounded sites. Also, we found that the dam and reservoir facilitated colonization of non‐native invasive species (Corbicula fluminea and Melanoides tuberculata) because only in those sites they were found in high abundance, in contrast to the free‐flowing sites. Although the environmental conditions imposed by the impoundment altered the structure of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages, the effects were limited to sites closest to the dam. Macroinvertebrates are important for processing leaf detritus in temperate streams, but studies about their role in tropical streams often present conflicting results. Via digestive tract analyses, we assessed the diets of Phylloicus sp. larvae (Trichoptera: Calamoceratidae), collected from streams of two southeastern Brazil river basins (Araguari, São Francisco). We classified gut contents as coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM), fine particulate organic matter (FPOM), algae, animal tissue, vascular plant tissue and mineral material. We hypothesized that the diets of Phylloicus larvae would be related to the physical habitat of the streams (e.g., riparian vegetation, organic matter availability and morphological characteristics), larval size and river basin. Although FPOM content predominated in both basins, we found greater CPOM content in Phylloicus larvae of Upper São Francisco sites, and this food item was related to greater riparian vegetation canopy density. The FPOM content was greater in larvae of Upper Araguari sites, and this food item was correlated with greater instream brush cover. Algae, animal tissue, vascular plant tissue and mineral material were very rare in the digestive tracts, and therefore could not be explained. These results indicate the importance of riparian vegetation structure in modulating feeding habitats of macroinvertebrates. We conclude that the Phylloicus larvae had more flexibility in what they eat than we might expect based on their traditional classification as shredders. Therefore, trusting in published classifications, ignoring regional or local differences, may be inaccurate. Instead, regional studies of feeding habits are needed for accurate classifications of invertebrate taxa into trophic guilds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An understanding of the interactions among local environmental factors (e.g., physical habitat and water quality) and aquatic assemblages is essential to conserve biodiversity in tropical and subtropical headwater streams. We evaluated the relative importance of multiple physical and chemical habitat variables that influence the richness of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera (EPT) assemblages in wadeable Brazilian Cerrado (savanna) streams. We sampled macroinvertebrate assemblages and quantified physical and chemical habitat in 79 randomly selected sites in 2 Cerrado basins in southeastern Brazil. The environmental variables selected by multiple regression models (MLRs) via corrected Akaike Information Criteria (AICc) contributed significantly to variation in EPT taxon richness. The variance explained by physical-habitat variables was slightly greater in the Upper São Francisco Basin (adjusted R² = 0.53) than in the Upper Araguari Basin (adjusted R² = 0.46), and both were greater than the variance explained by a combined basin model (adjusted R² = 0.39). Physical-habitat variables were more important than water-quality variables in structuring EPT genera in streams with catchments dominated by agriculture or pasture land uses. Regional models can be improved by incorporating basin-specific information to refine biological assessments and to provide better understanding of the interactions that maintain biodiversity in stream networks. Landscape and site-scale data analyses aid the interpretation of biological data and thereby help us develop more cost-effective natural resource management strategies. Our study focused on environmental influences on stream assemblages and we evaluated how three classes of environmental variables (geophysical landscape, land use and cover, and site habitat), influence fish and macroinvertebrate assemblage richness in the Brazilian Cerrado biome. We analyzed our data through use of multiple linear regression (MLR) models using the three classes of predictor variables alone and in combination. The four MLR models explained dissimilar amounts of benthic macroinvertebrate taxa richness (geophysical landscape R ≈ 35 %, land use and cover R ≈ 28 %, site habitat R ≈ 36 %, and combined R ≈ 51 %). For fish assemblages, geophysical landscape, land use and cover, site habitat, and combined models explained R ≈ 28 %, R ≈ 10 %, R ≈ 31 %, and R ≈ 47 % of the variability in fish species richness, respectively. We conclude that (1) environmental variables differed in the degree to which they explain assemblage richness, (2) the amounts of variance in assemblage richness explained by geophysical landscape and site habitat were similar, (3) the variables explained more variability in macroinvertebrate taxa richness than in fish species richness, and (4) all three classes of environmental variables studied were useful for explaining assemblage richness in Cerrado headwater streams. We examined the effects of physical and chemical habitat variables and ecoregions on species occurrence and fish assemblage structure in streams of the Paraíba do Sul basin, in southeast Brazil. 2. Fish and environmental data were collected from 42 sites on 26 first to fourth order streams (1 : 50 000 map scale) in three ecoregions. The sites occurred in one valley and two plateau ecoregions at altitudes of 40–1080 m and distances of 0.1–188 km from the main channel of the Rio Paraíba do Sul. Physical habitat (substratum, riparian cover, habitat types) and water quality (dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature and conductivity) variables were measured at each sampling site. 3. A total of 2684 individuals in 16 families and 59 species were recorded. 4. Ecoregion was a better predictor of the fish assemblage than the other environmental variables, according to the differences between the mean within-class and mean between-class similarities in assemblage data. 5. Differing landscape characteristics were associated with differing local variables and thereby with differing fish assemblage structures. Riffles, shrub, grass, dissolved oxygen, conductivity and temperature were closely related to fish assemblage structure. 6. Fish assemblages in sites far from the main river and at higher altitudes also differed from those near the Paraíba do Sul main channel, presumably as a result of differences in connectivity, covarying environmental factors and anthropogenic influence. 7. These results reinforce the importance of understanding how stream communities are influenced by processes and patterns operating at local and regional scales, which will aid water resource managers to target those factors in their management and rehabilitation efforts. • We evaluated aquatic assemblage responses to native riparian vegetation loss. • We provided a framework that evaluates the cost-effectiveness of aquatic groups. • EPT were more sensitive to native vegetation loss than fish for both spatial extents. • EPT are most cost-effective for monitoring the effects of native vegetation loss. Biomonitoring is critical for characterizing and monitoring status, spatial patterns, and long-term trends in the ecological condition of freshwater ecosystems. The selection of cost-effective bioindicators is a critical step in establishing such monitoring programs. Key indicator considerations are a reliable response to anthropogenic disturbances, a high benefit-cost-ratio and sensitivity at multiple spatial extents. We evaluated non-linear responses of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera (EPT) and fish to the effects of native vegetation loss within buffers of 100 m and 1000 m and assessed the sampling and processing costs involved for each assemblage. We sampled 37 neotropical stream sites in the Formoso River network, a karstic region of the Bodoquena Plateau, midwest Brazil, lying in the ecotone between the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest biological hotspots. We used TITAN (threshold indicator taxa analysis) to identify six indicator taxa, four EPT genera and two fish species. The four EPT genera had low negative thresholds to native vegetation loss, whereas the two fish species had positive thresholds. Thresholds were lower for the 100 m buffers than the 1000 m buffers for EPT. The most sensitive taxon (Macronema , Trichoptera) had a threshold of 0% native vegetation loss in the 100 m buffers and nearly 40% in the 1000 m buffers. For taxa richness, we found no non-linear response to the effects of native vegetation loss for buffer extent nor assemblage. The total cost for EPT biomonitoring was US$ 3,616; whereas for fish, the total was US$ 1,901. Although fish were less expensive than EPT, they did not respond negatively to native vegetation loss and their positive threshold started at 48%, a level of vegetation loss that was highly disruptive of EPT. Therefore, we do not recommend using fish to monitor the effects of native vegetation loss on headwater streams in the Bodoquena Plateau. Although EPT monitoring costs 52% more than fish assemblage monitoring, it detected earlier impacts of the effects of native vegetation loss on stream biota, especially in the 100 m buffer. Therefore, EPT are more cost-effective early warning indicators for monitoring the effects of native vegetation loss in Bodoquena Plateau headwaters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The quality and availability of water resources in tropical watersheds are threatened by increased multiple use demands by human populations. Therefore, there is a need for cost-effective ecological indicators of water body status and trends. Multimetric indices (MMIs), based on responses of biological assemblages to anthropogenic disturbances, are excellent examples of such indicators and they have been applied globally. However, creating new MMIs for each water body or study area requires considerable analytical effort and hinders our ability to make regional or global comparisons. Therefore, we tested the effectiveness of 17 published benthic macroinvertebrate MMIs for assessing the environmental quality of a tropical anthropogenically least-disturbed river basin in the Neotropical Savanna (Brazilian Cerrado) biome. We tested those MMIs through use of macroinvertebrate data sampled at 40 stream sites in the Pandeiros River basin, Brazil. Disturbances in the basin were related to local factors such as pasture, garbage, and cropland in stream riparian areas. Index performance was tested by comparing precision, bias, responsiveness and sensitivity to anthropogenic pressures and stressors. Ten indices performed satisfactorily in evaluating the environmental condition of the basin. Therefore, we do not recommend developing new benthic MMIs for rapid environmental quality assessments. Multimetric indices (MMI) have been widely used to assess ecosystem conditions because they are low-cost, employ a rapid field method, and can incorporate various biological metrics at different levels of biological organization. Our objective was to create a fish-based multimetric index applicable to all streams of the Brazilian savanna biome (Cerrado), the second largest biome in Brazil and deemed a global biodiversity hotspot. We evaluated 156 sites in two river basins (Paraná and São Francisco) and selected metrics capable of distinguishing stream-sites across a gradient of anthropogenic disturbances. We employed two different MMI approaches to determine if an MMI based on natural variation-adjusted metrics performed better than one based on unadjusted metrics. In addition, we assessed the performance of the two final MMIs and their sensitivity to anthropogenic pressures at local (LDI), catchment (CDI) and both scales integrated (IDI). Finally, we employed the power of a probability sample survey design to infer headwater stream conditions across a hydrologic region of approximately 47,000 km2. Our final MMI for Brazilian savanna streams included six metrics: % common species; % characiform individuals; % loricariid individuals; % trichomycterid individuals; % invertivore species, and % Poecilia reticulata individuals. MMI1 (unadjusted metrics) performed better than MMI2 (natural variation-adjusted metrics) in discriminating least- and most-disturbed sites, but MMI2 distinguished intermediate from most-disturbed sites better than MMI1. Both indices were negatively correlated with the CDI scores; however, only MMI2 was negatively correlated with the IDI scores. We inferred that 709 km (9.35%) of streams in the studied hydrologic region were in good condition, 8115 km (82.73%) were intermediate, and 641 km (7.91%) were in poor condition. We conclude that the MMIs proposed in this study have great potential for widespread application because they integrate data from two of the most important Brazilian river basins included in a biome that represents more than 20% of the country. Furthermore, the metrics retained in the indexes are easy to access with a rapid low-cost field method. Reservoirs are artificial ecosystems with multiple functions having direct and indirect benefits to humans; however, they also cause ecological changes and influence the composition and structure of aquatic biota. Our objectives were to: (1) assess the environmental condition of Nova Ponte Reservoir, Minas Gerais state, southeastern Brazil; and (2) determine how the aquatic biota respond to disturbances. A total of 40 sites in the littoral zone of the reservoir were sampled to characterize physical and chemical habitat, land use, and benthic macroinvertebrate and fish assemblages. The predominant type of land cover near the reservoir was natural vegetation. A total of 29 fish species and 39 macroinvertebrate taxa were collected, including eight alien species. Most sites had intermediate levels of human disturbance, however, high levels of degradation were associated with high proportions of alien species. Disturbances at multiple scales may alter natural patterns and processes, leading to environmental changes and damaging biological communities. Our results reinforce the importance of assessing reservoir ecological conditions at several scales. The study of land use, littoral zone physical habitat characteristics, water quality, and assemblage structure set the ground for proposing actions to rehabilitate and conserve aquatic ecosystems. Abstract: We developed a multimetric index based on macroinvertebrates to assess ecological condition of wadeable streams in Rio de Janeiro State, southeast Brazil. To do so we used a set of 12 reference and 12 severely impaired sites sampled in the summer wet season as calibration sites. Nine metrics were selected based on their abilities to distinguish between reference and impaired sites and their independence from other metrics. Metrics retained in the final index were: family richness; Trichoptera family richness; Shannon family diversity; % Plecoptera individuals; % Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera (EPT) individuals; % mollusk and Diptera individuals; % shredder individuals; proportion Chironomidae/Diptera individuals; and proportion Hydropsychidae/Trichoptera individuals. The final 9 metrics were standardized; then the Guapiaçu-Macau Multimetric Index (GMMI) was calculated, yielding a final index score ranging from 0 to 100. We validated the index through use of 19 sites subject to different levels of impairment, sampled both in summer and in winter. Our final multimetric index distinguished well between different levels of impairment and was strongly correlated with other disturbance measures. Temporal stability was also tested through use of 8 sites that were sampled in both seasons, and results showed no significant changes in the index final score among seasons. Our research represents one of the first initiatives in Brazil to develop a multimetric index for use in a spatially extensive bioassessment program extending across substantial natural and disturbance gradients. It can be a useful tool to help conserve streams in Atlantic forest conservation areas. • Trait-based approach for assessing Odonata larvae responses to anthropogenic impact. • Odonata larvae have different traits comparing least and highly disturbed streams. • Odonata larvae traits can be a useful tool for assessing anthropogenic impacts. Headwater streams are facing increasing disturbances from human pressures worldwide, thus better knowledge about bioindicators, particularly aquatic insect responses to various pressures and stressors, are urgently needed. Multiple trait-based approaches consider species attributes filtered by the environment, allowing them to persist in ecosystems under environmental pressures. Because this approach has been minimally explored in Odonata larvae, we aimed to understand how anthropogenic stressors structure Odonata larval assemblages in neotropical savanna streams by using multiple trait-based approaches. We hypothesized that a set of stressors--such as reduced substrate heterogeneity, poor water quality, natural land cover converted to pasture and agriculture, and reduced local riparian canopy cover--select Odonata functional traits. We collected 3209 Odonata larvae from 186 neotropical savanna headwater stream sites and used 39 environmental variables and seven traits in 23 categories related to their functional roles in Odonata genera. To assess associations between trait categories and environmental variables, we applied RLQ and fourth-corner statistical analyses. We found strong relationships between environmental variables and sets of Odonata biological traits that were separated into two main groups. Zygoptera genera (Perilestes , Allopodagrion , Heliocharis , Argia , Epipleoneura , Mnesarete/Hetaerina , Psaironeura) have elongated body shapes, caudal lamellae respiration, conforming thermoregulation, and endophytic oviposition. Such traits favor assemblages in conditions similar to reference streams, including denser riparian vegetation, good water quality, and diverse flows and substrate. Therefore, they are more sensitive to changes in those conditions. On the other hand, Anisoptera genera (Gomphoides , Archaeogomphus , Macrothemis, Brechmorhoga , Gynothemis , Phyllocycla) have cylindrical body shapes, internal gill respiration, endothermic thermoregulation, and burrowing behavior. Those traits facilitate their survival in intermediate or disturbed stream sites, characterized by riparian deforestation, increased erosion and siltation, and higher levels of total dissolved solids and conductivity. Therefore, using Odonata larval traits can be a valuable tool for assessing and monitoring anthropogenic impacts on neotropical savanna streams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Deforestation is a major threat globally, but especially in tropical regions because they are biodiversity strongholds and carbon storehouses. Some studies have reported changes in species richness and composition in lotic ecosystems with increased forest-loss in their catchment, presumably resulting from the replacement of sensitive taxa by more resistant or tolerant taxa. Also, sensitive taxa respond to deforestation in a non-linear manner and fish and macroinvertebrates have different sensitivities to landscape pressures. Therefore, it is useful to determine the effects of forest-loss on widespread sensitive or threshold taxa in aquatic ecosystems. We used Threshold Indicator Taxa Analysis (TITAN) to assess forest-loss and land use history impacts in 92 eastern Amazonian stream sites. We determined TITAN peak-change thresholds for fish at 1% and 6% of forest-loss at total-catchment and local-riparian spatial extents, respectively, and at 2% and 40% of land-use intensity change at total-catchment and local-riparian spatial extents, respectively. For macroinvertebrates, TITAN peak-change thresholds were 1% and 11% of forest loss at total-catchment and local-riparian spatial extents, respectively, and at 3% of land-use intensity change for both total-catchment and local-riparian spatial extents. Because of these thresholds, inherent ecoregional variability and key literature, we have three major recommendations. 1) Logging should be prohibited in riparian reserves that are at least 100-m wide on each side of headwater streams and in a network of catchments across all biomes and as many landscape types as possible. 2) An ecologically and statistically rigorous monitoring program with standard methods should be implemented to assess and regulate land uses better. 3) Conservation planning areas should consider aquatic biota as well as terrestrial biota. Brazil contains the largest volume of freshwater of any nation in the world; however, this essential natural resource is threatened by rapid increases in water consumption and water quality degradation, mainly as a result of anthropogenic pressures. Declining water quality has become an increasingly more significant global concern as economic activities and human populations expand and climate change markedly alters hydrological cycles. Changes in land-use/land-cover (LULC) pattern have been recognized as a major driver of water quality degradation, however different LULC types and intensities affect water quality in different ways. In addition, the relationships between LULC and water quality may differ for different spatial and temporal scales. The increase in deforestation, agricultural expansion, and urban sprawl in Brazil highlights the need for water quality protection to ensure immediate human needs and to maintain the quality of water supplies in the long-term. Thus, this manuscript provides an overview of the relationships between LULC and water quality in Brazil, aiming at understanding the effects of different LULC types on water quality, how spatial and temporal scales contribute to these effects, and how such knowledge can improve watershed management and future projections. In general, agriculture and urban areas are the main LULCs responsible for water quality degradation in Brazil. However, although representing a small percentage of the territory, mining has a high impact on water quality. Water quality variables respond differently at different spatial scales, so spatial extent is an important aspect to be considered in studies and management. LULC impacts on water quality also vary seasonally and lag effects mean they take time to occur. Forest restoration can improve water quality and multicriteria evaluation has been applied to identify priority areas for forest restoration and conservation aiming at protecting water quality, but both need further exploration. Watershed modelling has been applied to simulate future impacts of LULC change on water quality, but data availability must be improved to increase the number, locations and duration of studies. Because of the international nature of watersheds and the consistent relationships between land use and water quality in Brazil, we believe our results will also aid water management in other countries. Ghost nets constitute a serious threat to aquatic biodiversity, because they entangle animals as long as they persist in the environment. However, scientific literature in Brazil is virtually silent about this issue in inland ecosystems. Concerned with this gap, we conducted searches on YouTube BR to gather information about ghost nets in Brazilian freshwaters. Through our search, we compiled 33 independent videos showing ghost nets in different aquatic environments. In several cases, we identified entangled animals (i.e., fishes, reptiles, and birds). In this work we also provide recommendations to better understand and mitigate this problem in Brazilian freshwater ecosystems.

Serious concerns have arisen regarding urbanization processes in western Amazônia, which result in the creation of artificial habitats, promoting the colonization of malaria vectors. We used structural equation modelling to investigate direct and indirect effects of forest cover on larval habitats and anopheline assemblages in different seasons. We found 3474 larvae in the dry season and 6603 in the rainy season, totalling ten species and confirming the presence of malaria vectors across all sites. Forest cover had direct and indirect (through limnological variables) effects on the composition of larval anopheline assemblages in the rainy season. However, during the dry season, forest cover directly affected larval distribution and habitat variables (with no indirect affects). Additionally, artificial larval habitats promote ideal conditions for malaria vectors in Amazonia, mainly during the rainy season, with positive consequences for anopheline assemblages. Therefore, the application of integrated management can be carried out during both seasons. However, we suggest that the dry season is the optimal time because larval habitats are more limited, smaller in volume and more accessible for applying vector control techniques.

Conservation initiatives overwhelmingly focus on terrestrial biodiversity, and little is known about the freshwater cobenefits of terrestrial conservation actions. We sampled more than 1500 terrestrial and freshwater species in the Amazon and simulated conservation for species from both realms. Prioritizations based on terrestrial species yielded on average just 22% of the freshwater benefits achieved through freshwater-focused conservation. However, by using integrated cross-realm planning, freshwater benefits could be increased by up to 600% for a 1% reduction in terrestrial benefits. Where freshwater biodiversity data are unavailable but aquatic connectivity is accounted for, freshwater benefits could still be doubled for negligible losses of terrestrial coverage. Conservation actions are urgently needed to improve the status of freshwater species globally. Science has a critical role to play in guiding more sustainable development trajectories. Here, we present the Sustainable Amazon Network (Rede Amazônia Sustentável, RAS): a multidisciplinary research initiative involving more than 30 partner organizations working to assess both social and ecological dimensions of land-use sustainability in eastern Brazilian Amazonia. The research approach adopted by RAS offers three advantages for addressing land-use sustainability problems: (i) the collection of synchronized and co-located ecological and socioeconomic data across broad gradients of past and present human use; (ii) a nested sampling design to aid comparison of ecological and socioeconomic conditions associated with different land uses across local, landscape and regional scales; and (iii) a strong engagement with a wide variety of actors and non-research institutions. Here, we elaborate on these key features, and identify the ways in which RAS can help in highlighting those problems in most urgent need of attention, and in guiding improvements in land-use sustainability in Amazonia and elsewhere in the tropics. We also discuss some of the practical lessons, limitations and realities faced during the development of the RAS initiative so far.
