- Abstract
The Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia, published since 1925, is the most influential dermatological journal in Latin America, indexed in the main international bibliographic databases, and occupies the 50th position among the 70 dermatological journals indexed in the Journal of Citations Reports, in 2022. In this article, the authors present a critical analysis of its trajectory in the last decade and compare its main bibliometric indices with Brazilian medical and international dermatological journals. The journal showed consistent growth in different bibliometric indices, which indicates a successful editorial policy and greater visibility in the international scientific community, attracting foreign authors. The increases in citations received (4.1×) and in the Article Influence Score (2.9×) were more prominent than those of the main Brazilian medical and international dermatological journals. The success of Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia in the international scientific scenario depends on an assertive editorial policy, on promptly publication of high-quality articles, and on institutional stimulus to encourage clinical research in dermatology., (Copyright © 2023 Sociedade Brasileira de Dermatologia. Objective: To analyze Brazilian scientific production in pediatric dentistry. Methods: Four journals were selected from the Journal Citation Reports 2011 database. All papers published between 2000 and 2011 were reviewed. The variables were the number of scientific articles published in each journal, institution of origin, authorship of articles and the involvement of both national and international partnerships. Results: From 2.428 articles retrieved, 315 were by Brazilian authors, with an average of 26.25 articles per year. Conclusions: The participation of Brazilian researchers increased from 2000 to 2011. The majority of the production occurred in public higher education institutions from the southeast of the country, and only a few studies were performed in partnership with researchers from different institutions, whether domestic or international. The development of collaborative networks between researchers from different institutions should be encouraged as a way to increase high impact scientific production in pediatric dentistry [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Quotations in Brazilian journals are mainly obtained from national articles (articles from Brazilian journals); thus, it is essential to determine how frequently these articles reference Brazilian journals. Objective: This study sought to verify how frequently national papers are cited in the references of three Brazilian physical therapy journals. Method: All references for articles published in Fisioterapia em Movimento, Fisioterapia e Pesquisa and Revista Brasileira de Fisioterapia between 2010 and 2012 were evaluated. In particular, the numbers of national articles and international articles (articles from international journals) cited in these references were determined. Results: A total of 13,009 references cited by 456 articles were analyzed, and 2,924 (22.47%) of the cited works were national articles. There were no significant differences among the three examined years. A total of 36 (7.89%) articles did not cite national articles, whereas 65 (13.25%) articles cited more national articles than international articles. Conclusion: On average, 22.47% of the works cited by the evaluated articles were national articles. No significant differences were detected among the three analyzed years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents a historical perspective of the Qualis system in the Engineering I area of Capes. Qualis is the set of procedures used by Capes to stratify the scientific production of Brazilian graduate programs. The result of Qualis is a list of journals used by these programs for the dissemination of their intellectual production. The Qualis system began in the triennial evaluation from 1998 to 2000 and was applied with the same configuration up to 2006. In 2007 the Qualis system had an important transformation in its structure. It now has seven strata. This new Qualis was used for the first time in the evaluation of graduate programs in 2010. The new Qualis strongly uses the ISI impact factor for stratification, mainly for the two highest strata. The principles of Capes that pertain to Qualis and its application to the Engineering I area are described. Two theoretical models for the development of a histogram of journal classification are discussed: one bimodal and the other a single modal, quasi-symmetrical approach. In the field of Engineering I, the application of the Qualis criteria resulted in a bimodal histogram that approximates the theoretical model for two populations with a hierarchy of quality. A brief discussion of the impact of the new Qualis on Brazilian journals is also presented and suggestions are made for a policy which gives greater value to these periodicals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The creation of the Capes Portal for periodicals was a milestone for the Brazilian scientific community. The Portal allowed researchers to have access to the database and to thousands of scientific journals worldwide. To verify the importance of this milestone, scientific papers published by 200 researchers from graduate courses in the Biological and Health Sciences at the University of Brasilia were evaluated with respect to: i) the number of references; ii) if the references were written as international or local papers; and iii) if those articles were of quality, as determined by Capes. The evaluated papers were from 1995 to 2005, five years (1995-1999) before of creation of Portal (2000), and five years afterwards (2001-2005). This investigation concluded that with the creation of the Capes Portal for periodicals, the researchers increased the number of references and the number of international citations in their articles and also augmented the quality of the publications mentioned in their texts. - Abstract
Overviews synthesising the results of multiple systematic reviews help inform evidence-based clinical practice. In this first of two companion papers, we evaluate the bibliometrics of overviews, including their prevalence and factors affecting citation rates and journal impact factor (JIF). We searched MEDLINE, Epistemonikos and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR). We included overviews that: (a) synthesised reviews, (b) conducted a systematic search, (c) had a methods section and (d) examined a healthcare intervention. Multivariable regression was conducted to determine the association between citation density, JIF and six predictor variables. We found 1218 overviews published from 2000 to 2020; the majority (73%) were published in the most recent 5-year period. We extracted a selection of these overviews (n = 541; 44%) dated from 2000 to 2018. The 541 overviews were published in 307 journals; CDSR (8%), PLOS ONE (3%) and Sao Paulo Medical Journal (2%) were the most prevalent. The majority (70%) were published in journals with impact factors between 0.05 and 3.97. We found a mean citation count of 10 overviews per year, published in journals with a mean JIF of 4.4. In multivariable analysis, overviews with a high number of citations and JIFs had more authors, larger sample sizes, were open access and reported the funding source. An eightfold increase in the number of overviews was found between 2009 and 2020. We identified 332 overviews published in 2020, which is equivalent to one overview published per day. Overviews perform above average for the journals in which they publish., (© 2021 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

Background: The Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia (Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia) is the official journal of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, which has been published since 1925, with free, bilingual access. There are several bibliometric indicators that estimate aspects of a journal's scientific influence. Its analysis, based especially on the evolutionary trend, allows identifying the journal's strengths and weaknesses, in addition to guiding editorial policies., Objectives: To evaluate the trends of the main bibliometric indicators of Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia, in the decade of 2010-2019., Methods: Methodological study that proposed the analysis of bibliometric indicators published by Journal Citation Reports, SCImago, and Scopus, for the journal Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia, from 2010 to 2019. The following aspects were evaluated: Impact factor, Immediacy index, SJR (SCImago), in addition to the number of citations, citable items, Cite Score, percentage of external citations, percentage of cited articles, percentage of citable articles, and the article influence score., Results: There was an increase in the main bibliometric indicators in the last decade: impact factor (0.337 to 1.121), immediacy index (0.054 to 0.204),Eigenfactor (0.00025 to 0.00394), SJR (0.176 to 0.453). The percentage of external citations (48.4% to 94.1%) and cited articles (24.7% to 51.4%) also increased. The increase in the impact factors of Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia in the period was more significant than that of the dermatology journals (1,667 to 2,118) and the Brazilian journals (1,247 to 1,408), indexed in the Journal Citation Reports., Study Limitations: Failure in the classification and registration of the databases., Conclusions: There has been a consistent increase in the scientific influence of Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia in the last decade., (Copyright © 2021 Sociedade Brasileira de Dermatologia. Objective: To assess whether there is a preference for international journal citation to the detriment of national ones in ten Brazilian medical journals, in two different periods., Methods: All references in the articles published in Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia, Revista Brasileira de Cirurgia Cardiovascular, Revista da Associação Médica Brasileira, São Paulo Medical Journal, Arquivos Brasileiros de Endocrinologia e Metabologia, Clinics, Jornal Brasileiro de Pneumologia, Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical, Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria e Acta Ortopédica Brasileira in the years 2011 and 2007 were analyzed, assessing the number of articles published in national and international journals., Results: A total of 36,125 references from 1,462 articles published in the 10 aforementioned journals were analyzed. Of the total number, 4.242 (11.74%) were from Brazilian journals. There was no significant difference between the two analyzed periods. A total of 453 (30,98%) of the articles studied non-cited brazilian papers, and 81 (5.54%) articles had more Brazilian than international references., Conclusion: Of total references analyzed, 11.74% were related to articles published in Brazilian journals. This number, when compared to the percentage of Brazilian articles published in the medical area, demonstrates a good number of citations of national articles., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Editora Ltda. - Abstract
Introduction: The scientific production of institutions of higher education, as well as the dissemination and use of this published work by peer institutions, can be assessed by means of quantitative and qualitative measurements. This type of analysis can also serve as the basis of further academic actions. Variables such as the type of evaluation, the number of faculty members and the decision to include or exclude researchers who are not professors are difficult to measure when comparing different schools and institutions., Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the scientific production of tenured faculty from the Universidade de São Paulo, Faculdade de Medicina performed from 2001 to 2006., Methods: Medline/PubMed database was considered and the Impact factors (IFs--Journal Citation Report, 2006) and the number of generated citations (Web of Science/ISI Thomson) were also evaluated., Results: The analysis of the scientific production of 66 full professors (level MS-6) revealed 1,960 scientific articles published in 630 scientific journals, of which 31.3% were Brazilian and 68.7% were from international sources. Among these, 47% of the articles were published in 62.9% of the journals with IFs above 10, although 16.4% of the journals did not have assigned IF values. We verified that 45% of the published articles received 9,335 citations (average of 11 + 17), with the majority of these (8,968 citations) appearing in international scientific journals., Conclusions: Our results indicate that it is possible to analyze the scientific production of a learning institution by the number of papers published by full professors, taking into account not only their academic position and influence, but also the fact that publication is an opportunity to stimulate joint projects with other members of the same institution.
