Purpose: This study aims to investigate how an organic cotton production network learns to maintain its hybrid network and its sustainability in the face of internal and external pressures. Design/methodology/approach: A qualitative case study was conducted in Justa Trama, a Brazilian-based organic cotton production network formed by six members with different roles and organisational logics. Findings: The study contributes to the literature on hybrid organisations by suggesting that in the case of networks, a compromise strategy is required at the internal level and a manipulation strategy is required at the external level. The network has to learn how to engineer a compromise among internal members and to enforce change among external institutions to maintain its sustainability. Social implications: The study was performed in Brazil, a country with serious social and environmental problems. The study thus informs managers of social economy organisations on how to deal with internal and external pressures to maintain their organisation's sustainability as well as policy makers on the importance of these alternative organisations and the importance of specific legislation to stimulate this type of initiative. Originality/value: The body of research on how hybrid organisations learn to deal with the mutual influence of internal organisational responses and changes in external institutions is limited. Furthermore, this mutual influence has rarely been studied in the context of networks, in which multiple members have to work together to achieve organisational and network-level objectives as well as to respond to institutional pressures. How can Brazil be understood as a global laboratory for fascist insurrection? Given the events of January 8, 2023, this essay intends to analyze, on the one hand, the manifestation of a global extreme right that tends to operate as a large-scale, long-lasting anti-institutional offensive force. On the other hand, there is also a global dynamic limited to liberal democracies of institutional reform that cowers in the face of radical demands, such as the end of national policing above all. Finally, the constant colonization of Brazilian politics by society's militarized operations urges us to reclaim the foundations of politics as potential for (im)possible futures through uprisings against our unbearable condition, in turn transforming the unsustainability of life into a collective venture for transformation. This article discusses Brazil's prudential developmentalism through a case study that challenges the expected trade‐off between Basel rules and the developmental state. Under the Brazilian arrangement, the Central Bank has substantially implemented the new Basel rules, while policymakers have dealt with significant developmental mechanism. This piece's central claim is that two institutional capacities support prudential developmentalism. The first is the Brazilian Central Bank's regulatory capacity to enforce Basel, which derives from the maximization of its institutional conditions and the minimization of the banks' regulatory costs. The second is the developmental state's capacity to foster economically relevant domestic business, observing prudential standards. Purpose: This paper investigates how companies become resilient to supply chain (SC) piracy through using transactional and relational governance mechanisms to develop strategies effective in environments characterized by weak regulative institutions and mistrust. Design/methodology/approach: This study developed case studies of nine large manufacturers with operations in Brazil. Findings: The companies employed transactional and relational governance mechanisms to learn from past incidents, anticipate, and respond to the threat of SC piracy, becoming more resilient over time. Transactional governance mechanisms reduced risk triggers through technology, while relational governance mechanisms enhanced trust between SC and non-SC members, allowing the members to build social capital. Practical implications: The authors provide practical guidance for managers and policymakers in developing risk management strategies based on technology and collaboration to reduce SC piracy in environments characterized by mistrust. Social implications: SC piracy is a serious problem for global operations and SCs in many low-cost manufacturing locations. Besides the cost and service level consequences, the authors also highlight worker safety consequences, including the potential for kidnapping, psychological trauma, injuries, and death. Originality/value: This study focuses on the little-researched topic of SC piracy. The authors examine the negative effects of a weak institutional environment, while most prior research focuses on the positive effects of a strong institutional environment. This study analyses the internationalization characteristics of Large Brazilian Pharmaceutical Companies. It contributes to the international business and evolutionary literature by showing how the home country institutional environment affects the firms' internationalization at a country- and industry-level. The methodology is a multiple case study with eight companies, exploring their competitive advantages, strategies, and obstacles to international expansion. Findings reveal that home country institutional environment constraints pushed companies to build capabilities to survive and compete in the domestic market, which served as advantages when going international. In this article, we discuss the precarious labor environment of Brazilian journalists with relation to platformization and the impacts it has had on the profession. This discussion is based on research data conducted on the work of journalists in Brazil, and primarily on the analysis of the results from the Brazilian Journalist Profile 2021 survey. The online survey consisted of a total of 3,100 professionals working in the field of journalism throughout the country. Data reliability is 95%, with a 2.3% margin of error. The study shows that around 60% of journalists work with online media, and more than half work from home - most of whom paid a high price for this as they were placed under a high level of stress with heavy workloads and overtime. Additionally, 50% of professionals in other communications fields have had to develop social networking roles that are unrelated to their job description. The discussion of this data, in view of precariousness and platformization, leads us to conclude that journalism professionals are subject to working conditions that have an impact on the quality of their physical and mental health. The objective of this review article is to determine, through a database, the level of the work climate of health personnel from public institutions in Latin America, generated through scientific publications from 2019 to 2022. The research is of descriptive quantitative character. A total of 1,069,976 articles found were obtained, leaving 12 articles through systematic purification as the final result. The results of this article show that, at the Latin American level, in eight of them (three from Mexico, two from Peru, two from Ecuador and one from Brazil) health professionals perceive an inadequate work environment, unlike the four remaining investigations (one from Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and Chile) that perceive an optimal work environment. And the factors that affect the work environment in health personnel as identified public servants are, in the first place, the remuneration factor, inadequate decision making, lack of leadership, lack of recognition and outstanding achievements. This article focuses on the Brazilian Company for Industrial Research and Innovation, (EMBRAPII), a social organisation created as an intermediary agent to encourage partnerships between research centres and companies. The main objective was to overcome the shortcomings of Brazil's conventional STI public policies, the technological and innovation results of which were considered unsatisfactory. EMBRAPII innovates in governance and funding, regarded as an instrument capable of boosting companies' engagement in collaborative technology and innovation projects. This article concludes by acknowledging EMBRAPII's evident qualities with respect to the conventional STI policies, even though its achievements seems lower than expected in terms of the number of companies involved. The research findings endorse Ergas' assumption that policies cannot be assessed in isolation. Brazil experienced a complete economic cycle with an ascending phase in the 2000s, followed by a decline during the following decade. Using the national accounts, the objective of this article is to trace the growth path of the Brazilian economy from the 2000s onwards through a detailed analysis of the financial balance and income flows of the institutional sectors. It will be shown that the economy has two relevant points of inflection: the first was the external shock occasioned by the 2008 global financial crisis, and the second was the change in domestic economic policy after 2015 following an austerity agenda. The article compares the financial balance of the institutional sectors at the two historical moments. It sheds new light on why the Brazilian economy entered the descending phase of the economic cycle and is stagnating and deepening its financialization process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Alternative food networks are expanding across the world, such as Solidarity Purchasing groups, Farmers' Markets and, particularly, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). In a traditional CSA model, the consumers subscribe to a CSA quota and agree to pay an amount to finance agricultural production, and, on the other hand, farmers deliver products such as vegetable and fruits to consumers. The production risks are transferred from producers to the community members. The aim of this study was to characterize the CSA in Federal District, Brazil, and evaluate the impacts of these new production and marketing arrangements under the farmers and co-farmers point of view. Data collection was carried out through interviews in a sample with 14 CSA and 34 co-farmers with the support of a semi-structured script, composed of six dimensions: Organizational Structure; Culture of Work Organization; Communication; Socio-Environment; Logistics; and Economics. The most relevant results were: for farmers − security, planning, stability, and financial independence of the activity; adoption of organic farming methods; increase in product quality and diversity; improvement in quality of life; recognition and appreciation of rural work; training and adoption of preservationist practices. For co-farmers − increasing social and environmental awareness; increased health care; knowledge of new agricultural products and new uses; reduction of waste; empathy and rationality. For society, this new arrangement of food production and distribution is positive in several aspects, mainly due to the increase in environmental awareness, the valorization of rural activity and greater financial autonomy for farmers, which can help in poverty reduction. Purpose: We investigated the association between shareholding control and characteristics of the corporate governance structure of the Brazilian publicly traded companies. Design/methodology/approach: The sample was composed of 300 companies listed on the Brasil, Bolsa, Balcão in 2020. Shareholding control was categorized as dispersed, shared, family, entrepreneurial, and governmental. It was realized a correspondence analysis was used to identify the relevant associations between the types of shareholding control and the characteristics of the corporate governance structure. Research, Practical & Social implications: We observed an association between the type of shareholding control and the independence of the board of directors, overlapping between the board of directors and the executive board, presence of family relations and subordination among directors, evaluation and tenure of directors, and installation of supervisory and control bodies. In the theoretical field, these results contribute to the discussion about the contingent factors that affect corporate governance of companies. Originality/value: The findings of this paper corroborate how the contingency approach to corporate governance are influenced by characteristics of each firm's organizational environment, among which is the type of shareholding control. Brazil has great potential for the development of an NTFP bioeconomy as it has 500 million hectares of forest. In this article, I seek to identify, through a literature review, innovations in products and processes inserted in the value chain of Brazilian NTFPs with a greater productive value. The hypothesis is that the prospects for the development of the bioeconomy of NTFPs depend on the establishment of a series of innovations along the value chain and in public policies. The production value of NTFPs reached USD 365 million in 2020 and the main NTFPs were açaí, yerba mate, carnaúba pode, Brazil nut, babassu, and pequi. I observed that the products with the highest production value developed innovations in the cultivation of species and in the development of new products. Innovations related to social and commercial organization have been developed within the scope of working in networks. Several policies were implemented based on the construction of a collective concept for the activity related to the NTFPs, sociobiodiversity. Even so, these actions need to be continued and strengthened for the transition to an inclusive, sustainable bioeconomy that takes into account traditional knowledge. Investment in research needs to be constant for the development of new products. Sustainable planting in diversified systems can also be considered an important strategy. Partnerships between the government and the various actors in the value chains are necessary and urgent to ensure innovations, also in the regulatory and organizational environment of NTFPs' value chains. Guided by the possibility of the learning process being affected by cyberloafing behavior, this study analyzed the precedents and consequences of engagement in cyberloafing behavior by Accounting Sciences students based on personal use of the internet and technological devices in the classroom. There is little joint discussion about the precedents and consequences of this behavior, despite the diverse evidence of its importance and influence over the individuals' different living environments. Thus, these variables represent a topic of interest to understand their effects over students. Cyberloafing behavior has been linked to academic performance, learning experiences, and the emotional state of students, and so it is pertinent to understand its precedents and consequences. The implications of the research are discussed in theoretical, practical, and social terms. The personal and conscious use of the internet and technological devices should be promoted in order to provide gains both at the individual and at the organizational level in the environment the student inhabits. Structural equation modeling was applied to 404 valid participations obtained through an online survey conducted with students from different regions of Brazil. The personal precedents, such as the need for contact with friends, exert a greater effect over cyberloafing behavior. The academic precedents, such as the quality of the materials used in the classes, also presented a significant relationship with cyberloafing behavior. The consequences related with cyberloafing consisted of arriving late to class and academic meetings, procrastinating in the execution of academic activities, and isolating oneself from friends and family. These elements show that cyberloafing is the result of the environment the individual inhabits and that it has different consequences in the student's life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research aimed to describe the knowledge flows related to the administrative activities of the Sertão Campus of the Federal University of Alagoas, university campus in the city of Delmiro Gouveia - Alagoas, in the Northeast of Brazil. To this end, an exploratory-descriptive methodology with a quantitative approach was adopted. A census survey was conducted that surveyed a population of 47 civil servants using a structured online questionnaire; the collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results found that the knowledge flows of the campus are mainly composed of explicit knowledge; intradepartmental flows always occur; interdepartmental flows and with higher instances, occasionally; the knowledge life cycle stands out in practices that are not based on IT; communication failures are the main barrier; the organizational climate proved to be the greatest facilitator; Socialization and Internalization processes occur frequently; Combination and Externalization, occasionally. It was concluded that there is great potential for flows, characterized by the promising environment and engagement of the servers, but with the need for intervention in communication failures, low interdepartmental interaction and storage of knowledge. Although the recent advancements in critical constructivist IR on political rhetoric has greatly improved our understanding of linguistic mechanisms of political action, we need a sharp understanding of how rhetoric explains foreign policy change. Here we conceptualize a link between rhetoric and foreign policy change by foregrounding distinct dynamics at the regional and domestic institutional environments. Analytically, at the regional level, we suggest examining whether norms of foreign policy engagement are explicitly coded in treaties and agreements or implicit in conventions and practices of actors. And at the domestic level, we suggest examining whether a particular foreign policy issue area is concurrent or contested among interlocutors. In this constellation, we clarify how four different rhetorical strategies underwrites foreign policy change – persuasion, mediation, explication and reconstruction – how it operates, and the processes through which it unfolds in relation to multiple audiences. Our principal argument is that grand foreign policy change requires continuous rhetorical deployments with varieties of politics to preserve and stabilize the boundaries in the ongoing fluid relations of states. We illustrate our argument with an analysis of Brazil's South-South grand strategy under the Lula administration and contrast it against the rhetoric of subsequent administrations. Our study has implications for advancing critical foreign policy analysis on foreign policy change and generally for exploring new ways of studying foreign policies of nonwestern postcolonial states in international relations. Purpose - The objective of this research was to statistically compare employee's use of sources of guidance (SOGs) at work in the United States and Brazil and discuss results in the light of differences concerning national cultural characteristics. Method - 220 employees from a Brazilian university and 166 employees from an American university filled out a paper-and-pencil questionnaire. Pearson correlation tests (r) and Student t-tests were run to investigate statistically significant differences between the two samples, which were discussed in the light of national cultural characteristics. Main results - Americans presented significantly higher means than Brazilians on Informal Rules and People Outside Organization, and Brazilians presented significantly higher mean than Americans on Formal Rules and Procedures. The discussion showed that some of these differences are compatible with national cultural characteristics. Relevance/Originality - Recognizing the importance and the role of national cultures on individuals' attitudes and behavior within the organizational environment is fundamental in the search for effective and contextualized management practices. Theoretical/methodological contributions - Up until 2020, only 12 theoreticalempirical studies about SOGs were developed. Hence, the present study theoretically and empirically contributes to knowledge about this very important work-related construct. Social/management contributions - The results suggest to managers, human resource professionals, and psychologists important differences in the attitudes of American and Brazilian employees concerning the use of sources of guidance at work, contributing, for instance, to recruitment and selection processes in multinationals. Goal: We sought to understand how Brazilian franchise networks, in their internationalization strategy, deal with aspects of the political and legal institutional environment of a Middle Eastern country, knowing that the conditions that drive the diffusion of these networks do not always meet the most favorable profiles. desired for international expansion, such as geographic and cultural proximity, in addition to the existence of legislation that deals directly with franchising and the political stability of the region. Method: We used qualitative research of an explanatory nature and a single case study, represented by the Brazilian franchise chain Chilli Beans with operations in Kuwait. Main results: It was identified that even with important institutional distances, legal aspects are dealt with globally, political aspects can be mitigated based on the strategic choice of the local franchisee and the main attraction and continuity factor is taking advantage of market opportunities. Relevance / Originality: It was found that, although a franchise network operates in a country with large institutional distances, it is possible to reduce them through expansion strategies, such as the precise choice of the local franchisee, the governance mode that preserves the characteristics destination country, or even a business model that facilitates cross-border transactions. Theoretical contributions: Enrich internationalization theories from an institutional perspective, specifically for the political and legal dimensions and in regions with wide institutional distances, such as Kuwait in relation to Brazil. Managerial contributions: Subsidize the franchisor with strategic alternatives for choosing the mode of entry into foreign countries and highlight market opportunities in institutional environments different from the Brazilian one. Context: infrastructure projects assume the use of intensive capital and the participation of several actors, where the institutional environment influences their respective contractual arrangements. A financial instrument for project governance is surety bond (SB), whose purpose is to ensure compliance with the contracted object. However, research involving SB in the context of emerging countries such as Brazil is still incipient. Objective: this study aims to understand the use of SB in Brazil and proposes a conceptual model for analyzing transactions. It contributes to the literature by investigating the relationship between the actors and transactions involved in SB using the transaction costs theory and agency theory perspectives. Methods: this study adopts a qualitative methodology using primary data collected with 10 indepth semi-structured interviews with market professionals with substantial experience in SB. In addition, it uses secondary data based on debate and a specific lecture on the topic involving the reality and the use of SB. Results: the findings indicate that the agency problem and the high transaction costs in Brazil prevent the development of this risk coverage market, giving rise to targeted public policies. Conclusion: the proposed conceptual model reflects the various specific transactions in the use of SB, the underlying phenomena and the validation of propositions related to market failures, and the institutional environment's influence. The extraction of nontimber forest products, an important tool in the conservation of forests and the generation of social benefits, is prominent in the economies of extractive communities. This article describes the production chain of fava d'anta (Dimorphandra gardneriana Tulasne) in two conservation areas of Chapada do Araripe, Northeast of Brazil, highlighting the socioeconomic profile of the collectors and the main conflicts in the extraction process of this resource. Participant observation and semistructured questionnaires were used to collect the information. Data were analyzed by SWOT-AHP, which ranked the main factors and subfactors that can affect the production chain. The extractivist family groups comprise individuals with low levels of education, and their economic base is dependent on the extractions of diverse (at least four) forest products. The fava d'anta chain presents difficulties regarding community organization, resource marketing and distribution, profit sharing among the stakeholders, conservation, and overexploitation of the species. On the other hand, the chain is effective in supporting the subsistence of collectors and the empowerment of minority groups. Obtaining the resource in distinct environments (forested, managed, and cultivated areas) allows extractivists to meet the market demand for the product while safeguarding the species in its natural environments. Collection of fava d'anta fruit in the region is important for extractivist communities and that, for the activity to be effective in promoting regional development, the organizational and institutional environment will need to be adjusted under constant monitoring. Corruption in the Brazilian public administration has gained centrality due to the successive scandals unveiled in the country. The public higher education institutions (HEIs) did not go unscathed, bringing attention to the fact that they are organizations aimed at promoting citizenship and intellectual education. This article analyzed how the organizational environment is configured to fight corruption through a case study of the 17 HEIs in Minas Gerais. We verified characteristics related to corruption in administrative disciplinary proceedings established between 2015 and 2019 and interviewed civil servants who participated in the conduction of these processes. Although most interviewees did not have a clear perception of corruption in the HEIs, the research findings indicated the main factors related to integrity that contribute to fighting corruption in the organizational environment. These factors are the complaints channels, external and internal control mechanisms, instruments for promoting ethics and rules of conduct, transparency, and access to information. In terms of structure, it was found that corporatism was the main obstacle to fight corruption in the organizational environment. The study points out the need for future research to verify the institutionalization of integrity measures in the HEIs as a strategy to combat corruption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This paper aims to explore the effects of institutional environments across developed and emerging markets on buyer–supplier cooperation. It empirically examines a Business-to-Business relational exchange model of trust-building, commitment and cooperative behaviors within firms in the USA and countries such as Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC). Design/methodology/approach: A conceptual model and accompanying research hypotheses are tested on a sample of buyers from the USA (n = 169), Brazil (n = 110), China (n = 100), Russia (n = 100) and India (n = 100). Structural equation modeling is used to test the relationships in the model. Findings: Findings suggest that approaches to achieve successful cooperation vary across countries and depend on the interaction between formal and informal institutions present in each country. Results show that buyers from India and China place relatively greater emphasis on conflict resolution and commitment, whereas buyers from Brazil and Russia rely more on trust in their efforts to create cooperative relationships. For US buyers, formality and quality of communication and functional benefits are key factors in fostering trust, commitment and cooperation. Practical implications: A conceptual framework is advanced that extends traditional westernized and China-only perspectives of relational exchanges to a more universal context. Results suggest that suppliers understand how their buyers' country-level institutional environment shapes their partnership legitimacy and relational motivations at the transaction level. Originality/value: To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is the first to examine buyer–supplier relational exchanges through the lenses of transaction cost, social exchange and institutional theories using the USA and BRIC nations as proxies for examination of institutional effects. Purpose: This study aims to analyze how the Brazilian National Communications Agency (Agência Nacional de Telecomunicações - Anatel) and cellular operators in Brazil used ceremonial and discursive practices to build enforcement and compliance actions, adopted during a period of crisis in the cellular sector industry in 2012 when the legitimacy of the respective regulatory model and the regulatory agent were challenged, shaping a compliance trap situation. Originality/value: The work fills a theoretical gap by associating the normative-cultural perspective of regulation associated with organizational institutionalism, based on the assertion that the relationship between regulator and regulated is interactive and not unidirectional, allowing that enforcement mechanisms represent political efforts, realigning the interests of the actors within their institutional environments. Design/methodology/approach: The case study research strategy with a qualitative approach is adopted, studying the 2012 crisis in the cellular sector industry, with the collection of data from documentary sources and semi-structured interviews with participants in the process. Findings: The results show that, in the compliance trap situation, symbolic criteria can appropriate the speeches, producing texts and practices in favor of legitimizing the enforcement mechanisms and the respective compliance responses in view of the audience. Therefore, the compliance trap risk on the regulatory agent is mitigated to the extent that ceremonial and discursive practices manifest themselves responsively and gain political and cultural support, reducing social pressure on the legitimacy of the regulation model. Purpose: In this paper, the authors aim to explore the relationship between the concepts of Industry 4.0 and circular economy (CE) as a contribution to the management decision on emerging countries. By analyzing the trends of scientific production to ascertain the interface of both constructs, the purpose of this paper is to identify limitations for Industry 4.0 and CE implementation in Brazil, as well to present an original framework and strategic pathways to overcome limitations for emerging countries. Design/methodology/approach: Supported in the Brazilian case, the authors draw a framework using the structuralism approach to indicate pathways for the strategic positioning of emerging economies that consider their limitation and potential for competitive advantage. By understanding country-related limitations such as social and economic contingencies, the authors conceive a structure of implications for Brazil's capacity to develop CE in the digital era. Findings: Results show that Brazil has a reasonable, institutional and stable environment, as well as strong regulatory policies for solid waste that can stimulate CE in the country. However, it requires more communication between actors, especially public and private institutions, performing long-range relationships. Also, the country requires consolidation of industrial policies and investments in the remanufacturing process in the supply chain. Likewise, despite Brazil's ability to take advantage of CE's benefits, the country presents a huge lack of qualification to fulfill the competences that the digitization process demands. Economically, Brazil has been fighting against an economic crisis since 2014 that has limited general investments, especially in the industrial sector. Industry presents low performance and decreasing GDP participation, which leads to constant overseas production transfer as a consequence of the workforce's high costs. Research limitations/implications: The authors can affirm that Brazil is far behind developed countries in searching for the capacity to provide CE through technological industrial change. The main problems are related to the lack of articulation of public and private spheres to promote new digital business models. Therefore, the structured framework enables managers and public agents to provide solutions and to properly address supply chain bottlenecks in emerging economies. Purpose: This paper aims to investigate the combined effect of economic policy uncertainty (EPU) and the firm life cycle on the degree of accrual-based earnings management of publicly traded companies in the USA and Brazilian stock markets. Design/methodology/approach: The EPU index used was the one developed by Baker et al. (2016), the Kothari et al. (2005) model was used in the main analysis to obtain the discretionary accruals and the classification of firms into different life cycles was based on the Dickinson (2011) approach, which relies on the sign of operating, investment and financing cash flows. The methodology includes correlation matrix and panel regression with fixed effects. Findings: The overall results for the USA sample suggest that economic policy uncertainty does have a heterogeneous influence on the firms' accrual earnings management conditional on their life cycle where firms in the introduction, growth and decline stages decrease this practice when policy uncertainty increases. For the Brazilian case, in general, there is no combined effect between these variables. These contrasting findings can be associated with either the different underlying characteristics of both stock markets or the reduced sample size for the emerging market analyzed. Originality/value: This research contributes to the earnings management literature examining how policy uncertainty is related to accruals manipulation under different life cycle stages and institutional environments. This theoretical-empirical work seeks to examine how technology promotes resilience, described as the meta-capacity to deal with adverse situations through adaptive, proactive, and reactive strategies, based on Scientific, Technological, and Innovation Institutions (SCIs) in Brazil. This investigation is based on a qualitative approach. It also focuses on a single case study with multiple units of analysis, in addition to being based on the Strategic Alliance for the Promotion of Technological Innovation, integrated by the Brazilian Association of Technological Research and Innovation Institutions (Abipti), by the National Association for Research, Development, and Engineering of Innovative Companies (Anpei) and by the National Association of Entities Promoting Innovative Enterprises (Anprotec). In other words, the research is based on the main entities that discuss and represent SCIs in Brazil, supported by a legal analysis of the different standards and reference documents that regulate science, technology, and innovation activities in the Brazilian legal system. The evidence obtained demonstrates that SCIs can promote resilience under conditions that allow their operation in the quadruple/quintuple helix model where government, business, academy, society, and the environment can connect from the SCIs in collaborative relationships, similar to the notion of open innovation that involves the use of input and output flows of knowledge to accelerate innovation, for the development of solutions, beyond the scope that any organizations or people would do individually. However, collaborative processes are difficult to trigger and remain without policies that ensure a cultural and institutional environment to support SCIs. Thus, there is, in fact, the emergence of a type of SCI 4.0 that promotes resilience through technology to face the new challenges of the so-called fourth industrial revolution that produce an era of disruption, expressed by dynamics that are reflected in new technologies, business model, products and strategies in companies and/or start-ups that aim to shake up an industry and change its competitive standards. Purpose - The study examines the effects of the (Brazilian) subnational competitive environment and relational embeddedness on the foreign subsidiary local innovation. Method - Primary data are collected through a survey from 152 foreign subsidiaries located in thirteen states in Brazil. Secondary data are sourced from the World Bank Enterprise Surveys. The data are analyzed through multiple regression. Main results - The results show a positive significant association between the subnational competitive environment and the local innovation of subsidiaries. However, there is no association between subnational external embeddedness and subsidiary local innovation. Furthermore, companies that enter through acquisitions are strongly associated with local innovation. Relevance/Originality - The study adds to the existing exchanges on the effect of subnational environment on the subsidiary local innovation, taking Brazil as an empirical context. A subnational level analysis is important as it considers subnational institutional heterogeneity and reveals variations that could be disregarded where a national level analysis is undertaken. Theoretical/methodological contributions: Although there is evidence of the impact of the institutional environment on strategy and innovation, this study makes some contributions. First, while existing studies do focus on both the developed as well as emerging markets, the focus with regard to the latter is mainly on Asia, and other important contexts such as Latin American having specific idiosyncrasies are ignored. Second, the study contributes to the studies of Economic Geography, supporting that each subnational environment has its particularities, as demonstrated in the nature of subnational issues in Brazil. The article reflects upon some of the pillars of the thinking of Boaventura de Sousa Santos, making connections with the Childhood Studies, especially with regard to the Sociology of Childhood in its critical approach. We therefore reengage some concepts elaborated by the author, such as the critique of modern science and the sociology of emergencies, interacting mainly with the theoretical framework proposed by Sarmento (2004; 2018). We also discuss in the article the concept of the rights of the child and its implications for research focused on early childhood education. Finally, given the argumentative nature of the chain of concepts developed by Boaventura, which allows for contradictions and confrontations of the hegemonic discourse already formulated about childhood, we suggest some alignments between the need of rethinking this generational segment and the fulfillment of the conditions for its social emancipation. Along these lines, we propose to overcome the universal vision not only in relation to the child, as has already been done by the critical Sociology of Childhood, but also in relation to the school, giving visibility to alternative experiences in this space. We conclude that the decentralized view of childhood in different institutional contexts, including school environments with other forms of time and space organization, with other logics in the implementation of its pedagogical political projects can offer new ways for the construction of a Pedagogy of Childhood which, in Brazil, constitutes an emerging field of research. Information is essential for organizations' competitiveness, in which software processes a large amount of data. Programmers develop technologies based on the creation and sharing of knowledge. Tacit knowledge is strategic, resulting from work experience requiring socialization and a favorable context to be developed. A cooperative environment results from a positive organizational climate and satisfaction of the employees' needs. Organizational climate reflects the culture, which determines corporate values and practices. However, academic literature shows that there is considerable stress among software professionals, resulting from workload. This paper objective is to verify, in a software company, the relationship between organizational culture, climate and knowledge sharing. A case study was carried out in a company in Marília City, São Paulo State, Brazil, which has a Local Productive Arrangement of Information Technology. Brazil is a player in the global coffee chain. However, coordination efforts are needed. Given the complexity of the product, and differentiation as an alternative for small producers, this study aimed to describe the mechanisms for measuring specialty coffees by analyzing the purchase and sale transactions between producers and an exporter in Brazil. Supported by the Economics of Measurement Costs, this qualitative research involved interviews with an exporter and observation with producers of specialty coffees. As results, the complexity of the measurement is highlighted, performed in four stages - evaluation of humidity, physical appearance and olfactory and sensorial. It was observed that the inherent variability of the product implies the need for measurement and re-measurement throughout the process and the chain. Measurement is supported, in the first three stages, in the Brazilian institutional environment, and in the fourth stage in an international protocol. Paper aims: This paper aimed to analyze the level of involvement of companies in the state of São Paulo with aspects of occupational health and safety (OH&S) and with NBR ISO 45001:2018. OH&S aspects have acquired increasing prominence worldwide especially due to the unprecedented publication of ISO 45001 in 2018. Originality: To the authors' knowledge, this is the first paper published in Brazil to explore the applicability of ISO 45001 to Brazilian companies. Research method: A survey was structured based on the requirements of the standard and sent to a sample of companies. After data collection and analysis, interviews were conducted with some of the companies as a way to complement and specify the data obtained. Main findings: OH&S operations with a management approach mostly occur in large companies. Small and medium-sized companies also work on OH&S aspects, however with specific actions oriented towards the compliance with Regulatory Standards by the Ministry of Labor. The knowledge about ISO 45001 proved to be still incipient. Implications for theory and practice: Since very few companies have performed some kind of work in order to bring the requirements of ISO 45001 to the organizational environment, new gaps must be filled concerning OH&S aspects. The negative and corrosive impacts of corruption in the fields of economics, politics, and law are widely discussed. Less understood are the potentially negative impacts of anti‐corruption struggles and strategies themselves. This article presents a case study of Brazil's 'Car Wash' ('Lava Jato') scandal from a legal and political perspective. Although the subsequent Operation Car Wash investigation was widely regarded as remarkably successful, supposedly buttressing the rule of law through high‐profile prosecutions of leading politicians and businesspersons, the article argues that legal due process, wider constitutional law, and the political process were undermined. While the use of media leaks to strengthen the investigation proved tactically successful, when coupled with new legal instruments it undermined the presumption of innocence and contributed to a climate in which political and legal debates themselves became increasingly subordinated to simplistic polarizing anti‐corruption discourses, thereby undermining an already fragile political and institutional environment. Purpose: This paper aims to analyze the attractiveness of the markets in the inland of Brazil to franchise chains based on the characteristics of institutional environment, referring to the socioeconomic, geographical, and human resources dimensions. Originality/value: Interiorization is a theme that has been hardly explored in franchise chains' growth strategies. This paper contributes to this debate through the institutional theoretical perspective, contributing to the clarification and ordering of the decision-making factors for the regional expansion of franchises. For regional development, it calls for municipal management to direct actions aimed at socioeconomic development and human resources. Design/methodology/approach: The quantitative method using secondary data - from Brazilian Association of Franchising (Associação Brasileira de Franchising [ABF]), Brazilian Association of Shopping Centers (Associação Brasileira de Shopping Centers [Abrasce]), Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística [IBGE]) and Google Maps - was employed in this study for the analysis of franchise location and for municipalities. The sample comprised 458 municipalities with a population of above 50 thousand inhabitants. The statistical techniques used were factor analysis and multiple regression analysis. Findings: The results show that the socioeconomic and human resources factors of the municipalities are essential for the attractiveness of franchises chains to the inland of the country. In turn, the geographical distance of the inland municipality in relation to the state capital did not present adherence to the model as an explanation for the attraction of franchises. An analysis is offered of the most valued dimensions of the information and documentation resources by Brazilian startups. The methodology was exploratory, using a questionnaire as an instrument for data collection and the Bardin's content analysis method (2010) for analyzing the data. The results showed three groups of divergences about what startups understood by information and documentation in their workplace. In general, it was perceived that these resources are not being administered and given enough relevance for the development of the functions that occur in these organizational environments. The article analyses, from the perspective of a Equipe de Atenção Básica prisional (EABp), how the prison environment affects the health of women deprived of their liberty and what are the main health needs identified from the daily work of this team. Through a qualitative survey, focal group meetings were held with the participation of 10 professionals from an EABp implemented in a women's prison in southern Brazil. The thematic analysis showed that the prison environment can either produce or trigger or aggravate the health problems of this population. The scarce supply of social services aimed at education, sports, leisure and the occupational area affect the living conditions in this place. These activities are essential to reduce the damage caused by confinement, since they act as protectors and promoters of health in prison. This condition denounces the organizational fragility and the little involvement of management bodies in defending and guaranteeing the citizenship rights of women prisoners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
